Those in attendance - many recently fired (or "RIF'ed") CDC employees, others frazzled voters seething for impeachment - had questions completely divergent from the topics he set the table with. All the same, he answered questions for nearly an hour after an opening statement, and unlike at Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene's hellish scene in Acworth more than a week ago, no one was tased, arrested or asked to leave. Rehearsals start June 16, and performers must be prepared to sing and dance concurrently. STORY 2: UPDATE: Three Arrested at Marjorie Taylor Greene Town Hall in Acworth Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene's town hall in Acworth turned chaotic, with three arrests, two taser incidents, and nine protesters removed. Greene emphasized her support for Trump’s agenda, immigration crackdowns, and banning gender-affirming care for minors. She addressed economic concerns, urging families to "rein in" spending, and dismissed claims about Medicare cuts. Protesters criticized her policies, while Greene defended her positions, including the Protect Children's Innocence Act and the Laken Riley Act. Despite disruptions, Greene answered pre-submitted questions, mostly from supportive constituents, and highlighted the growth of the MAGA movement. STORY 3: Carr Launches 'Operation Hold the Line' to Combat Transnational Gangs in Georgia Georgia Attorney General Chris Carr launched "Operation Hold the Line" in Cobb County, a taskforce uniting local, state, and federal agencies to combat transnational gangs, human trafficking, and fentanyl distribution. The project aims to accommodate up to 625 middle and high school students by replacing temporary classrooms with permanent buildings, upgrading athletic facilities, and adding a dining hall. The school plans to move middle grades to the upper campus as its lease for the lower campus ends in 2028. While the bond pricing is pending market conditions, the expansion is expected to create 14-16 jobs in five years, though some board members questioned its alignment with the authority's mission. STORY 5: Kemp signs two tax cut bills Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp signed two tax relief bills on Tax Day. House Bill 111 reduces the state income tax rate from 5.39% to 5.19%, retroactive to the start of the tax year, while House Bill 112 provides one-time rebates: $250 for single filers, $375 for heads of households, and $500 for joint filers. While the rebate bill passed unanimously, Democrats criticized HB 111, arguing it favors higher-income earners. Kemp defended the measures, emphasizing taxpayer control over their money. The signing event, held at the Coca-Cola Roxy Theatre, was attended by state leaders and lawmakers. DUI charges were dropped as part of a plea deal. Traton Homes: Why Townhomes Are Popular Right Now

Chris and Clif Poston, principals with Traton Homes, join host Carol Morgan for this week's Atlanta Real Estate Forum Radio episode. In this podcast segment, they discuss the growth of townhome development and what is available in the Atlanta market. What makes townhomes so appealing in today's home market? The demand for townhomes has increased as homebuyers desire smaller homes near community centers and local attractions. With home prices consistently rising, affordability is a driving force for buyers and the perk of landscaping and exterior maintenance being included in their monthly HOA fees is enticing. Clif Poston said, “We've got townhouses near a lot of different smaller municipalities, but I think it's a lifestyle allowing people to choose a smaller home and kind of giving up a little bit of space and maybe some yard space to be able to have accessibility to the local areas that they want to be in.” Traton Homes also utilizes amenities, such as dog parks, pools, cabanas and pickleball courts, to bring a sense of togetherness to the residents in its townhome communities. What is the demand for townhomes in comparison to single-family, detached homes? Townhomes are taking over the urban housing market because of higher development costs. People want to live close to dining, shopping, recreation and medical centers, but it is difficult to build affordable, single-family homes in the city. “The rising cost of development is because in the closer in areas, you're using somewhat of the leftover land, which drives higher development cost,” said Chris Poston. “So, there's not tracks of land available to go put nice, detached subdivisions in.” “A while ago, our slogan was changed to ‘Altogether More' and that encompasses altogether more of everything, value and design,” said Chris Poston. “So, I think we look at it as saying we're going to offer you a good price in an area, but we're also going to give you some of the key design features that maybe separate us and put us in a different spot.” Clif Poston emphasized that many home shoppers don't have different expectations for townhome residences versus single-family homes, except for square footage. Many are still looking for open-concept floor plans, great kitchens and large owner's suites, which are typical in both townhomes and single-family homes. “I don't know if people really change with what they want,” said Clif Poston. “I think that people just can kind of reframe and adjust their expectations as the product gets a little bit smaller and those spaces get a little bit more confined.” Tune in to the full interview above to learn more about townhome communities in metro Atlanta. For more about Traton Homes, visit www.TratonHomes.com. From the BG Ad Group Studio this is your news minute on the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast presented by Credit Union of Georgia. Today is Monday, September 30th, and I'm Keith Ippolito. Acworth Recognizes Mack Turner for Historical Preservation Mack Turner has become a cherished part of Acworth's history through his relentless efforts to preserve it. On August 1, Turner was inducted into Acworth's Hall of Fame, recognizing his contributions to the city. His dedication is further honored with a plaque at Acworth Depot Park, where he was pivotal in replicating the original railroad depot, now home to the city's first history center. Turner co-founded the Save Acworth History Foundation, which has documented the town's history through over 80 oral histories, numerous artifacts, and historic plaques. Despite retiring, Turner remains passionate about local history, believing that understanding the past is vital for the future. He credits the city and its citizens for supporting preservation efforts and hopes the foundation's work continues to thrive, ensuring Acworth's vibrant legacy endures. His contributions have deeply impacted the community, securing its historical identity for generations to come. For more news about our community, visit mdjonline.com. Under the direction of Scott L. Martin, the group will perform at the Georgia Music Educators Association's In-Service Conference in Athens on January 31, 2024, and at the Georgia American Choral Directors Association Fall Conference in October at Kennesaw State University. Fewer than a dozen groups statewide are chosen for the GMEA evening concerts. The group includes 35 members, and both events will feature music educators from across Georgia. Dean Rusk Middle School's Chorus will also perform at the ACDA event. STORY 5:   Fulton judge tosses three counts in Trump's election interference case A Fulton County Superior Court judge has dismissed three counts in District Attorney Fani Willis' election interference case against former President Donald Trump. The dismissed counts involved accusations of filing false documents in federal court, which Judge Scott McAfee ruled the state does not have jurisdiction to prosecute. The remaining charges, related to a scheme to overturn the 2020 election results in Georgia, remain intact. This ruling leaves five of the original 13 counts against Trump. The case has been on hold since June due to concerns about Willis' impartiality, which were addressed after the special prosecutor she hired resigned in April. Commercial: INGLES 8 (SALTS)   STORY 6:  Cherokee County Students Named National Merit Semifinalists Four Cherokee County School District high school seniors—Maja Brooker, Kevin Duncan, and Alfred Tang from River Ridge High School, and Robert Raymer from Sequoyah High School—have been named 2025 National Merit Scholarship Semifinalists. This honor, given to less than 1% of U.S. high school seniors, is based on exceptional PSAT scores. These students will be recognized at the Cherokee County School Board meeting on October 17. To advance, they must complete an application detailing their achievements and pass additional requirements. The National Merit Scholarship Corporation will select 15,000 finalists to compete for 7,500 scholarships worth around $30 million. STORY 7:  West, De la Cruz tossed from Georgia presidential ballot Two Fulton County judges have disqualified independent Cornel West and socialist Claudia De la Cruz from Georgia's presidential ballot due to improperly filed nominating petitions. Despite the disqualification, their names will still appear on the November 5 ballot because of timing issues. This decision reduces the list of qualified candidates in Georgia to four: Vice President Kamala Harris, former President Donald Trump, Libertarian Chase Oliver, and Green Party's Jill Stein. The Democratic Party of Georgia had appealed the earlier decision by Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger, concerned that West and De la Cruz could affect votes for Harris. Parents and children got to familiarize themselves with the school bus and Cheatham Hill Elementary School, which also hosted an open house. This event allowed families to meet teachers, drop off supplies, and explore the school. The day featured cheerleaders from Hillgrove High School and offered an additional open house later for those who missed the morning session. Overall, around 3,600 participants attended, with over 70,000 students expected to ride Cobb's 1,000 buses as school starts today. STORY 2:  Owens Maintains Fundraising Lead in Cobb Sheriff's Race Incumbent Cobb Sheriff Craig Owens, a Democrat, continued his strong fundraising into the summer, collecting $57,000 between April 30 and June 30. While this was a decrease from the previous period, Owens' total still significantly outpaces Republican challenger David Cavender, who raised just over $3,600 in the same period. Owens' notable contributors included Cobb District Attorney Flynn Broady Jr. and Armor Health. Owens has raised over $547,000 since his first campaign, with more than half spent on advertising and other campaign expenses. Cavender, a U.S. Army combat veteran, has raised $36,000 overall, with significant early spending on campaign costs. The next fundraising deadline is September 30. STORY 3: Marietta Square Bookstore Expands The Reading Attic, an independent bookstore in Marietta, has expanded into the downstairs area of Tiny Bubbles Tea Bar, integrating their book sales with the tea bar's gift shop. This new space features additional shelves for books, including a selection of bestsellers and children's books. The expansion aims to improve accessibility, as the bookstore's original upstairs location had limitations for those with disabilities and parents with strollers. Tiny Bubbles, which now combines seating with bookstore space, sees the partnership as mutually beneficial. The Reading Attic, celebrating its one-year anniversary, hopes the expansion will boost visibility and allow for larger events. The bookstore will now match Tiny Bubbles' hours, operating daily from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Contestants competed for a $500 prize, with Chris Wiggins winning both the judges' and audience votes for his rendition of "Don't Stop Believin'." The event also included a V.I.P. auction and raffle, raising around $35,000 for the theater. Cobb Idol, originally founded by Wendy Bunch and the Cobb Association of Realtors, was revived by the Strand Theatre to continue celebrating local talent. MDJ Script/ Top Stories for August 1st            Publish Date:  August 1st    Commercial: From the BG AD Group Studio, Welcome to the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast.    Today is Thursday, August 1st and Happy heavenly Birthday to Jerry Garcia. ***08.01.24 – BIRTHDAY – JERRY GARCIA*** I'm Dan Radcliffe and here are the stories Cobb is talking about, presented by Credit Union of Georgia.  Cobb hosts practice run for new school bus riders Owens Maintains Fundraising Lead in Cobb Sheriff's Race Marietta Square Bookstore Expands   Plus, Bruce Jenkins sits down with Leah McGrath from Ingles Markets on how to manage snacking.   All of this and more is coming up on the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast, and if you are looking for community news, we encourage you to listen and subscribe!    BREAK: CU of GA STORY 1: Cobb hosts practice run for new school bus riders    On Tuesday, Cobb County School District held its annual ride-along event for kindergarten and first-grade students to practice their new bus routes. Featuring live bands, backup singers, and dancers, the event drew about 300 attendees. STORY 5: Cobb Recovers from Thunderstorm   Tuesday night, Cobb County faced widespread damage and power outages from a severe thunderstorm with 60 mph wind gusts. The storm hit around 7:58 p.m. and cleared by 8:45 p.m., with Acworth experiencing significant damage, including broken power poles, fallen trees, and blocked roads. Crews responded to 77 reports of trees down across the county. No injuries were reported, and isolated thunderstorms are expected to continue throughout the week, according to the National Weather Service. Cobb Recovers from Thunderstorm Crews are working to restore power in Cobb County following Tuesday night's severe thunderstorm. No injuries have been reported, but the city of Acworth has been particularly affected, with damage extending into Wednesday morning. Acworth Power describes the event as "unusual," with multiple broken poles and fallen trees causing extended outages. Three major outage areas remain in the city as of Wednesday morning. On Interstate 75's Exit 278 to Allatoona Gateway, Acworth Power is collaborating with Georgia Power and Cobb EMC to repair transmission lines. Logan Road near Highway 92 and Academy Street near McCall Primary School saw large trees fall and snap power line poles, which crews are actively replacing. Smaller outages are also reported across the city. Countywide, crews have responded to 77 reports of downed trees in the right-of-way, according to a Cobb spokesman. Ryan MacDowell, partner at MacBuilt Homes, joins host Carol Morgan for this week's Atlanta Real Estate Forum Radio episode. In this podcast segment, MacDowell discusses the custom home market in Atlanta and what clients can expect when they choose MacBuilt for their dream home. Born and raised in Atlanta, MacDowell is a second-generation homebuilder. He formed MacBuilt Homes in 2016 and instantly made an impact with Atlanta's luxury homebuyers. Driven by a desire to flip the script on builder-customer relations, MacDowell introduced newer technology to the construction process, creating a clear view of the project for builders and clients. Using an owner portal and updated photography, MacBuilt Homes involves homebuyers in the building process with daily updates. MacDowell said, “Our goal has always been to transform the industry so that people have an enjoyable experience overall.” MacBuilt has expanded its reach tremendously in the last ten years, touching metro Atlanta hotspots like Buckhead, Sandy Springs, Norcross and northern areas like Acworth and Woodstock. MacDowell's knowledge of the area has been instrumental in choosing new locations and providing an intelligent perspective of the Atlanta cityscape. Wondering what top design trends custom-home shoppers are choosing? Home styles like modern contemporary, modern farmhouse and traditional are popular among MacBuilt's clients. Quality is the backbone of most homebuyers' expectations but features like energy-efficient appliances and luxury flooring are appreciated. “They're expecting to come through on their final walkthrough and see that they're not having to put 100 pieces of blue tape on the walls,” said MacDowell, “They are expecting to see quality as it takes place.” Aside from custom-build projects, MacBuilt is pleased to offer customers renovation services as well. MacDowell notes that after the COVID-19 pandemic of 2020, the need for updated spaces increased. Some key projects include adding home offices, basements and other renovations that increase living space upward and outward. “There's certainly some people looking for multi-generational living again, too,” said MacDowell. “That had gone away for quite a while, and now it's about finding some spaces for family members to move back or for children to stay a little bit longer.” With mortgage rates at a steady high, many luxury homebuilders are seeing an increasing number of cash-only buyers. Atlanta is a hub for relocation, so buyers often come from out-of-state and find properties in the $1 to $2 million range, a significantly lower price from where they started. Who is putting down these offers? Among the MacBuilt Homes buyers, the cash-only offers are coming primarily from young technology professionals moving to Atlanta and 55+ individuals.
