MDJ Script/ Top Stories for May 16th Publish Date: May 16th Commercial: From the BG AD Group Studio, Welcome to the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast. Today is Friday, May 16th and Happy Birthday to Pierce Brosnan I’m Keith Ippolito and here are the stories Cobb is talking about, presented by Times Journal Kennesaw State students protest losing Black Studies program Cobb Commuter Routes Consolidated, Free Cumberland Loop Cut Second Annual Paws Fest is May 17-18 Plus, Leah McGrath from Ingles Markets on grass-fed beef All of this and more is coming up on the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast, and if you are looking for community news, we encourage you to listen and subscribe! BREAK: TOP TECH MECHANICAL STORY 1: Kennesaw State students protest losing Black Studies program Dozens of Kennesaw State University students protested outside the University System of Georgia offices against the termination of KSU's Black Studies degree program, citing it as a setback for diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) efforts. The university attributed the decision to declining enrollment, but critics argue the process lacked transparency and undercounted students. Demonstrators carried signs and chanted slogans emphasizing the importance of diversity. The Board of Regents, which oversees such decisions, has not addressed the issue in its upcoming meeting. DEI programs face increasing opposition at state and federal levels, including legislative efforts in Georgia to defund them. STORY 2: Cobb Commuter Routes Consolidated, Free Cumberland Loop Cut Cobb County will eliminate the free Green Circulator bus loop near The Battery and consolidate three commuter routes (100, 101, 102) into the regional 484 Xpress route due to reduced ridership and the failure of a proposed transit tax. Ridership on commuter routes has dropped 81% since 2019, prompting cost-saving measures. The changes will save over $1.1 million annually, with funds redirected to other transit needs, including the 2025 All-Star Game. The county’s deal with ATL adds seven trips to the 484 route, covering most of the same stops, though the Marietta Transfer Center will no longer be included. STORY 3: Second Annual Paws Fest is May 17-18 The Avenue of West Cobb will host its second annual Paws Fest on May 17-18, featuring exciting DockDogs canine competitions like Big Air Wave, Extreme Vertical, and Speed Retrieve. Events begin at 10 a.m. each day, with finals on May 18 at 4:30 p.m. The festival also includes pet-friendly vendors, interactive booths, grooming services, and giveaways, such as doggy ice cream treats from Bark Street Petopia. Break: Ingles Markets 6 STORY 4: ‘A True Blessing’: New Pantry at Dunleith Fights Child Hunger Dunleith Elementary School in Marietta has opened a new food pantry, thanks to MUST Ministries and Kroger, to combat child hunger. Serving 50 families monthly, the pantry provides nonperishable food, produce, meat, diapers, and hygiene products. As a Title I school, 90% of Dunleith students receive free or reduced lunches, highlighting the need. This pantry is the fourth opened through a $207,000 Kroger-MUST partnership, which has established 18 pantries across Cobb and Cherokee counties. The initiative aims to reduce food insecurity, allowing students to focus on learning while addressing Kroger’s mission of “zero hunger, zero waste.” STORY 5: Marietta School Board Applauds Staff Support in Tentative Budget Approval The Marietta Board of Education tentatively approved a $167 million fiscal 2026 budget, a 5% increase from last year, focusing on staff raises and maintaining a flat 17.97 millage rate. The budget includes an average 3.3% raise for employees, with some reaching 6.4%, and allocates over 90% of the increase to salaries and benefits. Key allocations include $3.65 million for raises, $770,000 for new staff, and $2.6 million for insurance premium hikes. Public hearings are set for June 10 and 17, with a final vote on June 17. Additional approvals include funding for math programs, HR software, and school security. C. Scott Votaw is the Assistant Vice Chancellor of the University System of Georgia, where he is responsible for overseeing the Georgia Film Academy. After growing up in Georgia and graduating from college, Scott packed his car and headed west without a plan. With no relevant experience in film and production, he eventually networked his way onto a crew as a runner. Just by being present and paying attention, he found a way to save the production money and was rewarded with an almost immediate promotion to second assistant director. That auspicious start launched him into what would become an incredibly successful 25-year career in the film and production industry. His big break, a job working for Saban Entertainment on its new and wildly popular Power Rangers television show, set him on a course to work with Hollywood legends including George Lucas and Star Wars sound designer Ben Burtt. Then came his moment of reckoning. After building a career that was largely unplanned, Scott returned home to Georgia to care for a relative and try something new. He eventually networked his way into opportunities in education, but the timing was serendipitous as Georgia was in the process of building the infrastructure to support the growing film industry in the state. Thanks to Scott's experience in both education and production, and his availability and willingness to take on something new, he found himself in a position to help launch and run the Georgia Film Academy. In this episode, Scott shares his unplanned journey through the film industry, his tough decision to leave it behind and move back home to Georgia, and the incredible timing that set him on a course to transition from an industry insider to an educator at the highest level. The program aims to prepare students for careers in industries like health care, business, and cybersecurity, addressing Atlanta’s growing demand for tech talent. With AI playing a key role in areas like supply chain optimization and IT, the program expects to start with 65 students, growing to 168 by its fourth year. STORY 2: State lifts poultry suspension after bird flu outbreak Georgia’s Department of Agriculture has lifted its suspension on poultry activities after extensive testing found no new cases of avian influenza. The suspension, prompted by two bird flu cases in Elbert County last month, had halted poultry sales and events statewide, excluding retail meat and egg sales. Commissioner Tyler Harper emphasized the ongoing threat of bird flu to Georgia’s poultry industry but celebrated the return to normal operations. Over 4,500 tests on nearly 50,000 chickens revealed no further detections, though national outbreaks have contributed to record-high egg prices. STORY 3: Atlanta teen snuck into Apalachee High during school day An Atlanta teen, Herson Galindo, was arrested for trespassing and drug possession after sneaking into Apalachee High School on a bus with his girlfriend, a student there. Galindo, a Tri Cities High School student, was found hiding in hallways and bathrooms before being reported by another student. This incident follows a tragic mass shooting at the school five months ago, which left four dead, and a separate gun-related arrest last month. The bill, passed along party lines, also prohibits state-owned healthcare facilities and physicians from providing such care. Democrats criticized the legislation as harmful, mean-spirited, and a distraction from real issues, warning it could hurt the economy and violate federal civil rights laws. Republicans, led by Sen. Blake Tillery, argued the bill reflects the will of most Georgians and ensures taxpayer dollars aren’t spent on these procedures. An amendment for mental health care exceptions was rejected. STORY 5: House Speaker Burns names interim chief of staff Former Gov. Nathan Deal’s chief of staff, Chris Riley, will temporarily serve as House Speaker Jon Burns’ chief of staff following an accident that hospitalized Terry England, the current chief of staff. Speaker Burns praised Riley’s experience and dedication, expressing confidence in his leadership during England’s recovery. Riley, who served as Deal’s chief of staff from 2011 to 2018, said he’s honored to step in and support Burns’ agenda. Higher education is in crisis, and Peter Ainsworth, Author of the new IEA Publication 'Shares in Students', has a radical solution. In this podcast, he explains how universities are financially struggling, with graduates earning less and carrying massive debt. His proposal? Tie university funding directly to student employment outcomes. Ainsworth argues that the current system incentivises student recruitment, not student success. By redirecting loan repayments back to universities based on graduate earnings, institutions would be motivated to provide education that genuinely improves career prospects. He suggests removing bureaucratic regulations and allowing universities more flexibility in pricing. Drawing inspiration from medieval apprenticeship models, Ainsworth believes these reforms could transform the UK's higher education sector. With potential changes in the US system and declining international student numbers, he sees an opportunity for Britain to become the world's leading university destination by aligning educational and economic interests. The Dean's List with Host Dean Bowen – Brown University negotiates with student protesters over divestment from Israel, ultimately rejecting their proposal. Meanwhile, Georgia's Board of Regents pushes the NCAA to align its transgender athlete policy with NAIA standards. Both decisions reflect a commitment to firm stances on controversial issues, urging universities to prioritize policy and principle over protest demands and popular sentiment.
From the Ingles Studio this is your news minute on the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast presented by Credit Union of Georgia. Today is Wednesday, October 9th, and I'm Keith Ippolito. Board of Regents seeking to ban transgender women from college sports The University System of Georgia Board of Regents has voted to urge collegiate sports organizations to ban transgender women from participating in women's sports. This decision follows a similar move by the Georgia High School Association, which requires students to compete based on their birth gender. The issue gained attention during the 2022 NCAA Swimming Championships when Lia Thomas, a transgender athlete, won the 500-meter freestyle. Critics argue that transgender women have an unfair advantage and express discomfort with shared locker rooms. The Board's resolution aligns with the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics' policy, which already bans transgender women from women's sports. Lt. Gov. Burt Jones plans to introduce legislation in 2025 to ban transgender women from sports at Georgia's public colleges. Opponents of such bans argue they discriminate against transgender students, who already face high rates of prejudice and mental health challenges. Philosophy Professor Peter Boghossian notoriously claimed that “faith is a cognitive sickness that's been turned into a moral virtue.” He went on to say that every class is an opportunity to help students lose their faith. When the instructors our kids sit under in higher education come in with an agenda like that, Gen Z's sharp exodus from the faith makes sense. A child would have to be well prepared to withstand that kind of onslaught to their faith. In this episode of "Christian Parent, Crazy World," Catherine delves into the critical question of how higher education is leading Christian kids away from their faith. Her special guest, David Richardson, brings a unique perspective on the landscape of higher education. With over 32 years of experience working with college and university professors, Dave sheds light on the challenges faced by Christian youth in academic settings. Dave's journey from atheist student to faith in Christ provides a powerful testimony of God's transformative work on college campuses. His insights into the beliefs and attitudes of professors shed light on the disconnect between faith and academia. Catherine and Dave explore the impact of higher education on the youth exodus from Christianity and the role of Christian parents in navigating this challenging terrain. The conversation delves into the importance of connecting faith to real-world issues and the need for Christians to live out their beliefs authentically. Hypocrisy and the lack of a tangible connection between God and academic disciplines are identified as key concerns for atheist and agnostic professors. The episode highlights the historical roots of the formalized discipline of science in Western Christian culture and the role of faith in shaping scientific inquiry. The discussion sets the stage for a deeper exploration of core assumptions that influence belief systems in the next episode. As parents grapple with the decision to send their children to secular institutions, Catherine and Dave offer valuable insights into understanding the challenges faced by Christian youth in higher education. By addressing the disconnect between faith and academia, this episode aims to equip parents with the knowledge and tools to support their children's faith journey in an increasingly secular world. Guest bio: David Richardson is the founder of the Assumptions Institute and its Chief Executive Officer. Prior to founding the Assumptions Institute, Richardson served for 30 years on the staff of Cru, formerly known as Campus Crusade for Christ, devoting most of his ministry to university professors. He holds a B.A. degree in Interdisciplinary Studies from the University of Portland, and an M.A. degree in Theological Studies from the International School of Theology. Richardson also holds an MTh. degree in Applied Theology from the University of Oxford. His dissertation, “Accepting Christian Faith in the Academy” was an important exploratory study of the religious attitudes and beliefs of university professors and how to reach them for Christ. He understands education and educators very well. Richardson's first book, Transparent: How to See Through the Powerful Assumptions That Control You released from Clovercroft Publishing. Break 1: MOG STORY 1: Teen Formally Charged With Vehicular Homicide In Death of 4-year-old Formal charges were filed against Jacob Andrew Johnston, 18, for hitting and killing 4-year-old Abigail Hernandez outside the Mall of Georgia in March. Johnston faces second-degree vehicular homicide and reckless conduct charges, each carrying up to one year in prison. District Attorney Patsy Austin-Gatson announced the charges, promising to pursue justice fully. The DA's Office decided to charge Johnston after police chose not to, which angered Hernandez's family. An arrest warrant is pending. Austin-Gatson, who recently secured re-election, emphasized that the decision to charge Johnston is not politically motivated but aimed at delivering justice. STORY 2: Judge Revokes Bond For Man Accused Of 2005 Murder Of Ex-girlfriend Billy Joe Cook, 57, accused of murdering his ex-girlfriend Leslie Marva Adams in 2005, had his bond revoked for violating bond conditions. Released in February 2019, Cook was barred from firearms, going near Adams' family, and had a 10 p.m. curfew. Prosecutors cited multiple violations, including attending a New Edition concert past curfew, being found with firearm-related items after a shooting at his home, and visiting a Tampa casino. Gwinnett County District Attorney Patsy Austin Gatson confirmed Cook's return to jail and readiness to prosecute. Cook faces multiple murder charges in Adams' death. STORY 3: No gym, no problem? Majority of Americans get exercise they need without one A study of 2,000 U.S. adults revealed that 60% believe they can get all necessary exercise without a gym. The average person considers themselves active five times a week and exercises four times weekly, with 54% never going to the gym. Instead, they engage in everyday tasks like walking (74%), taking stairs (60%), yard work (59%), and cleaning (59%) for exercise. The study, commissioned by Nature's Bounty and conducted by OnePoll, found that 70% of respondents feel healthy, with 87% believing improved physical abilities could enhance their daily lives. Many also see a strong link between diet and physical activity levels. We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Call 770.874.3200 for more info. We'll be right back Break 2: TOM WAGES And now here is Guide Mental Health Update. ***GUIDE MENTAL HEALTH UPDATE*** We'll be back in a moment. Break 3: INGLES 5 STORY 6: UGA receives significant funding boost in state budgets The University of Georgia received significant investments from the state government, including $50 million for a new $100 million building for the UGA School of Medicine, $66 million to restore formula funds to the University System of Georgia, $52 million for employee salary increases, $31.6 million for facility upgrades, and $1.5 million to establish a new Georgia Research Alliance Eminent Scholar position. These allocations aim to advance teaching, research, and service missions, support core operations and academic programs, recognize employee contributions, and enhance UGA's research enterprise. These investments align with state priorities such as health care and STEM education. STORY 7: UGA study: The consequences of 'stress bragging' New research from the University of Georgia Terry College of Business reveals that individuals who boast about their stress levels are perceived as less competent and less likable by their coworkers. This behavior, termed "stress bragging," creates a negative perception among colleagues and can lead to higher levels of personal stress and burnout. The study found that stress bragging contributes to a workplace culture where chronic stress is normalized, leading to a contagious effect of stress among coworkers. Importantly, discussing stress in passing or being perceived as stressed did not generate the same negative reactions. The takeaway is for employees to reconsider boasting about their stress levels, as it may have detrimental effects on themselves and their coworkers, while managers should be aware of and address this behavior in the workplace. We'll have final thoughts after this. Break 4: GUIDE Signoff – Thanks again for hanging out with us on today's Gwinnett Daily Post Podcast. MDJ Script/ Top Stories for April 18th Publish Date: April 18th Commercial: From the Ingles Studio, Welcome to the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast. Today is Thursday, April 18th and Happy 47th Birthday to Melissa Joan Hart. ***04.18.24 – BIRTHDAY – MELISSA JOAN HART*** I'm Dan Radcliffe and here are the stories Cobb is talking about, presented by Credit Union of Georgia. Man Arrested After Bringing Gun to Kennesaw Mountain High School Man Wanted for Selling Heroin That Killed 17-Year-Old Georgia Justices Grill Lawyers in Cobb Map Case Plus, Bruce Jenkins sits down with Leah McGrath from Ingles Markets to discuss celiacs disease. All of this and more is coming up on the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast, and if you are looking for community news, we encourage you to listen and subscribe! BREAK: CU of GA STORY 1: Man Arrested After Bringing Gun to Kennesaw Mountain High School An 18-year-old Kennesaw man, Theodore Davidson, was arrested at Kennesaw Mountain High School for bringing a loaded, sawed-off rifle to an event hosted there. He was apprehended on school grounds during the event, Kennesaw Mountainfest. Davidson claimed the rifle belonged to his father, who instructed him to take possession of it. Cobb Board of Education Chairman Randy Scamihorn stated Davidson was not a district-enrolled student and suggested Davidson may have had an altercation with his girlfriend. The event was not officially sanctioned by the school or district, but Scamihorn emphasized the paramount importance of safety on school campuses. Davidson faces charges including possessing a weapon on school property and is held in Cobb jail without bond. STORY 2: Cobb DA: Man Wanted for Selling Heroin That Killed 17-Year-Old The Cobb District Attorney's Office issued an arrest warrant for Austin Joseph Love, accusing him of selling heroin to a 17-year-old who fatally overdosed on the drug. The incident occurred at a Waffle House on Sept. 30, 2023. Surveillance footage, Love's provided phone number, and car registration led to his identification as the suspect. The GBI confirmed the substance as heroin and Love has not been arrested. The DA's Opioid Fatality Project aims to combat the opioid epidemic. Challenges include investigating overdose cases and law enforcement unfamiliarity. Love faces a felony charge of selling heroin. STORY 3: Georgia Justices Grill Lawyers in Cobb Map Case The Supreme Court of Georgia held a hearing on the legal battle over Cobb Board of Commissioners' electoral maps. Justices questioned both sides but didn't reveal their stance. The dispute arose when the county replaced state-drawn maps, affecting Commissioner Jerica Richardson's district. The challenge focused on the plaintiffs' standing to sue. The Attorney General's Office argued against the county's invocation of home rule powers. The court's decision is expected before mid-November, but it's unclear if it'll impact the upcoming primary election. The hearing highlighted uncertainty over standing and the separation of powers between county and state. We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. The state's approved $2,500 raises for teaching staff contribute to this salary boost. The proposed budget, outlined by CFO Erin Franklin, entails an $11 million increase, largely attributed to rising employee benefits. Board member Angela Orange expressed satisfaction with the budget, emphasizing the importance of keeping up with the cost of living. Key allocations in the budget include funding for Science of Reading professional learning, additional staff for academic programs, and covering increased insurance premiums. The board unanimously approved various hires and budget expansions, setting the stage for tentative adoption in May. STORY 5: University System of Georgia raising tuition by 2.5% The University System of Georgia's Board of Trustees approved a 2.5% tuition increase for in-state undergraduates, citing inflationary pressures. Out-of-state students face a 5% hike, while a new tier will be introduced for out-of-country students. Kennesaw State University, for example, will see in-state tuition rise by $69 per semester, and out-of-state by $490. Students expressed disappointment, particularly those without financial aid. Despite the increase, Georgia maintains one of the lowest tuition averages among SREB states. The board also implemented new mandatory fees for online learning and extended the waiver of test score requirements for admission to most institutions for the 2025-26 academic year. From the BG Ad Group Studio this is your news minute on the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast presented by Credit Union of Georgia. Today is Wednesday, April 17th, and I'm Keith Ippolito. University System of Georgia raising tuition by 2.5% In a recent decision by the University System of Georgia, in-state undergraduates will face a 2.5% tuition increase for the upcoming school year, marking a shift after six years of stable tuition rates across most of its 26 institutions. The Board of Trustees has also approved a 5% increase for out-of-state students, with a new tier set at 2% above this rate for international students. System Chancellor Sonny Perdue said the adjustment is attributed to inflation and aims to maintain the quality and competitiveness of Georgia's public colleges and universities. The increase translates to a $69 rise per semester for in-state students at Kennesaw State University, reaching $2,850, while out-of-state students will experience a $490 hike, totaling $10,305 per semester. The decision has elicited concern among students, particularly those without financial aid. Despite these changes, Georgia remains among the states with the lowest average tuition in the Southern Regional Education Board. Additionally, the board has revised mandatory fees for online learners and extended a waiver on test score admissions requirements for most institutions for the 2025-26 academic year, excluding the University of Georgia, Georgia Tech, and Georgia College & State University. Contemplate, will if you will, the California State University system. It is the largest public-university system in the country — by some accounts, the largest in the world — with more than a half-million students and some 55,000 faculty and staff, spread across a sprawling network of 23 campuses, from the top of the state to the bottom. What if I told you that it was your job to decarbonize that entire system — the buildings, the energy infrastructure, the transportation, the food, the construction materials, all of it — and you had just over 20 years to do it. Would you panic? Possibly short circuit? I'm pretty sure I would. As it happens, though, that is someone's job. Her name is Lindsey Rowell and she is the Chief of Energy, Sustainability, and Transportation at the Chancellor's Office. She is on the hook for developing and implementing a plan to make the entire CSU system carbon neutral by 2045, with minimal use of offsets. You might think, to accomplish something so vast, she would have a team of dozens and a budget of billions. But this is a public university system, so of course she doesn't — instead it's duct tape, baling wire, and ingenuity. I had a great time talking with her about how to approach this unwieldy project. I think you will find her pragmatism and good humor refreshing.Every policy or regulation ultimately must be implemented by someone on the ground. This is what that looks like. Educational Debt Cancellation Foundation Dr. Jennoa Graham We have all seen the news recently with the government trying to figure out how to help struggling college graduates to pay their student loans. Part of the issue has been the ease with which students can obtain loans, sometimes totaling tens of thousands of dollars – or more! The belief is they will be able to find a great job with a degree and pay it off. But in many cases, that is not the case. Loans need to be repaid. If not, your credit ratings will suffer – and that just adds to the burden graduates face as they are trying to establish their lives after college. Adding to the burdensome brew are predatory lenders and universities that are disingenuous with students and their ability to repay student loans. Moreover, politicians continually make promises to relieve the burden of educational indebtedness. They have not. Single parents are especially vulnerable. Whether their circumstances result from divided families, death, a growing hope for the future, or the lack of a clear plan, the burden is a barometer and is usually a sign of serious storms ahead. Yet, there are things that single parents can do. That is where our guest today comes in. Praise God! Dr. Jennoa Graham is a professor with the University System of Georgia, teaching leadership, organizational behavior, HR Management and other business courses. But life was not always all “sunshine and roses” for her… She struggled as a single parent who made the decision to improve her life by attending college. As most students will, she took out student loans to do so. I'll let her tell her story… But after what she experienced, she decided to help others out so they would not have to struggle as much as she did. She founded the “Educational Debt Cancellation Fund,” which is an IRS approved 501-c-3 formed specifically to reduce the accumulated student loan debt of over $1.5 TRILLION! It is the vision of Dr. Graham to heighten awareness of student loan debt and eliminate Economic Disaster in all communities by “Breaking the bondage of educational debt.” The mission of the EDCF has started by helping single mothers who are struggling to repay education debt while providing for their children. Dr. Graham is also an active community leader, speaking domestically and internationally on a variety of topics for Academic Conferences, Business Conferences, Financial Workshops, Christian Radio, and online Podcasts. She is also an author of a great book, “Cyanidation: The Refinement of My Life.” It is her memoir and is available on Amazon. To give us more information on all of this, help me welcome to the program, Dr. Jennoa Graham! Dr. Graham, it is a blessing to have you join us today. I do appreciate your time. First question I always start with is this. Other than that brief information I just shared, can you tell us in your own words, “Who is Jennoa Graham? Let's go back to the beginning. You're a single mom trying to “make it” in the world. But one morning, in the winter, you made a decision of “No more frozen tears.” Can you explain that situation for us?
