Tom Barlow has been active in the UK BJJ scene and the international competitive jiu jitsu circuit for more than a decade. He received his black belt in 2011 from Braulio Estima, and has trained all over the world with greats like Eric Paulson, Andre Galvao, Rafa and Gui Mendes, and Otavio Sousa, among others. Tom has been very successful in competitive BJJ as well. He is a three-time No-Gi World Champion at featherweight, European Champion, and has competed in a number of professional, submission-only events like the Polaris Pro and Tuff– you also might recognise him as a recurring commentator for Polaris. This week on the show Maine and Emil recap the 2019 IBJJF Heavyweight GP, The Shugyo Invitational Episode 2, Preview Polaris 11, Fight to Win 123 in Sacramento, CA, and talk professional BJJ News. In the recap section of the show we kick things off with the 2019 IBJJF HW GP talking about replacements and each of the 7 matches that were part of the event in the quarterfinals we saw Joao Gabriel Rocha Patrick Gaudio, Vinicius Ferreira versus Luiz Panza that has some passing and rule issues, that affected the pace of the event. We saw Lucas Barbosa take a decisive shutout victory over Tim Spriggs via points 12-0, and in the last match of the quarters Roberto “Cyborg” Abreu vs. Victor Hugo 0-0, in what the hosts thought was one of the best on paper matchps. In the Semifinals we break down Joao Gabriel Rocha Vinicius Ferriera and lots of advantages, then Roberto “Cyborg” Abreu vs. Lucas Barbosa in a matchup full of controversy and penalties the Maine and Emil agree and disagree with In the finals we break down how Cyborg defeated Joao Gabriel Rocha and earned himself 40,000 dollars and Joao 10K in prize money. After that the hosts discuss some of the odd pacing and breaks in the event including a 2 hour break between the semifinals and the main event. After that we move into our recap of Shugyo Invitational Episode 2 and talk about how much we love the format and the narrative elements in the shows production. What we gleam from the competitors and generally how great the event is to watch. We break down Keith Krikorian Vs Max Rohskopf in their first round bouts and talk about how cool it was to hear Krikorian break down the submission that he gets it done with. Then we move into the recap of the Ethan Crelinsten Vs. Josh Bacallao match that saw Ethan take it with an impressive back take trapping the arms, and sinking in a deep rear naked choke to get the win. Tune in every week for this ongoing event. We briefly touch on ACE grappling and their event that run this weekend, and how to find the promotions matches. After that we move into the preview section of the show taking about Polaris Pro 11. Headlined by Ffion Davies VS Talita Alencar in a matchup that Maine thinks will determine the next grappler to compete for the belt. Edwin Najmi VS Mansher Khera a bout that could have potentially taken place last week in another organization, but that we get to see for real here. Cage Warriors star Paddy Pimblett takes on Steven Ray. A sleeper match on the main card in the Gi Marcos Tinoco VS Tommy Langaker, this is very well matched, and both hosts are looking forward to this style clash. Heavyweight Judoka Satoshi Ishii is pitted against No-Gi specialist Arya Esfandmaz, and Ben Dyson takes on Nick Rodriguez a seemingly unstoppable ADCC bound Blue Belt. We have been seeing a ton of Nicky Rod in recent weeks and he has not disappointed us yet. Looking forward to this whole event as well as some really outstanding matchups on the undercard. After that we preview Fight 2 Win 123, in Sacramento, California. This event is main evented by a matchup you do not want to miss Dante Leon vs Gabriel Arges, Leon is a grappler that we have seen push the action against event the highest level of competitors and Arges is just that this has fight of the night written all over it. This week on the Grappling Rewind Podcast we talk about the weeks news, and as always recap the weeks professional BJJ events; and preview the upcoming weeks events This week in news we talk about Patrick Gaudio announced for the IBJJF HW GP, Kamaru Usman earning his black belt in BJJ after defeating Tyron Woodly. Polaris Pro 9 has announced that sport betting for the event is live and that you can bet on professional grappling. In the big news Metamoris has announced that they are making a comeback and we found out how much money everyone is owed to athletes. Then we pontificate about who else didn’t get paid for their events. Plus we discuss Ralek Gracie MMA hour interview where he announces a search for a partner financially and operational partner. We talk about the leaked Gracie Barra Threats to the red shield post that popped up on Reddit /r/bjj. Then we get into the recaps section of the show. It was a packed week with the UAE King of Mats Lightweights, and UAEJJF Grand Slam in London taking place, Ultimate Mat Warriors 4 the Flyweights, Fight to Win 104 Dallas, TX, Grappling Industries Tim Sprigs vs. Craig Jones. We round out the show taking about SOGI 1. (We were unable to recap the Kasai Pro Qualifier for the 205 pound upcoming tournament due to the number of events this weekend), seriously were two guys there is only so much Brazilian Jiu Jitsu we can watch and take notes on in a 48 hour period. We start the recaps section off talking about the UAE King of Mats Lightweights, and UAEJJF Grand Slam in London. This event features two matches that make our Rewind Recommends list. This event features the best production we have seen from a grappling event. Overhead cameras, replay, ref replay, picture in picture, and more. This event featured great matches from Paulo Miyao, Isaac Doederlein, Hiago George and Joao Batista De Sousa. After that we move into our recap of a fun superfight between Tim Sprigs vs. Craig Jones at Grappling Industries. These two ADCC 2019 bound competitors squared off in Philly, in a dynamic match that we really enjoyed breaking down. Maine and Emil talk about how much they enjoy seeing grapplers and competitors staying active in the run up to ADCC. We continue with the recap section talking about Fight to Win 104 Dallas, TX, one of it not the most stacked events Fight to Win has ever put together. This event paid out over 50,000 dollars to athletes in salaries and commissions; making this event the highest paying event the promotion has ever run. This event featured Seth Daniels competing with a broken hand and prompted the question is it cool to attack an injury in competition? This card also featured Yuri Simoes vs. Rafael Lovato Jr in one of the highest-level matchups F2W has ever put on. Manuel Ribamar, DJ Jackson, Rafael Formiga Barbosa, and Nick Greene also were featured at the top of the card. We then move onto our recap of the Ultimate Mat Warriors 4 the Flyweights. An event stacked with flyweight talent. Maine gets to see a matchup he was looking forward to in Marcello Cohen vs. Austin Daffron in the semi finals of the tournament, plus an exciting finals match. After that we recap a few of the finals matches and finishing sequence from SOGI 1 the promotion inaugural event that crowned four champions at bamtamweight Junny Ocasio, at Welterweight Michael Kastroba, at Middleweight Enrique Galarza, and at Heavyweight Viktor Vaughn. As well as the announcement of an upcoming Quintet style event. Then we move into the previews section taking a look at Polaris Pro 9 headlined by Rafael Lovato Jr vs. Jake Shields, Vagner Rocha vs. Ross Nicholls, Ffion Dvaies vs Gezary Matuda, E

This week on the Grappling Rewind Podcast Maine and Emil, recap the weeks pro BJJ and Jiu Jisu events. We start off the show with the week’s news and generally what’s hot in the world of professional Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and what’s’ hot is one thing this week; who got invited to the 2019 ADCC event in California. As the invites list gets longer we see many of the staples of ADCC get their slot to the big show. We see Vagner Rocha, Geo Martinez, AJ Agazarm, Dillion Dannis, current Gi world champion Shane Jamil Hill Taylor, in the lower weight classes and top competitors Xande Ribeiro, the current Gi world champ Mahamed Aly, stand out Patrick Gaudio, former ADCC champions Vinny Magalhaes, and Roberto “Cyborg” Abreu. As well as Australian stand outs Kit Dale, and Craig Jones all get invites to the event. Then we close out news speculating about Conor Mcgregor potentially competing in grappling again after his comments during the Polaris Pro 9 promo. Plus we talk about Robbie Lawler vs Ben Askren and debate what it really is to be unconscious. That’s just the news section of the show. We get into the recap section where we take a look at Spyder Korea Qualifier 1, and the outstanding action that was this event over the weekend. We saw a number of Inter-belt matchup’s between purple belts brown belt and black belts all mixed into and under 76 kg division and an under 100 kg division. Taking a close look at Tim Sprigs and Mateus Lutes performances on the stacked event. After that we move into our recap of Fight to Win 103 in Houston Texas with a number of exciting matches and titles being exchanged. Gutemberg Pereira defending his title. Plus CEO Seth Daniels competing his first Judo match in 12 years only one week after neck and back surgery. A man Maine is truly inspired by. As well as a number of other matches on the card for the event. Then we move into the Midwest Finishers inaugural event that culminated in a bout between young stand out Andrew Tackett vs Pedro Serrano. These lightweight grapplers really put a stamp on the inaugural event and showcased the level of talent coming out of the Midwest. Next we get into more talent out of the Midwest as we recap Sub Spectrum 7. This event featured a men’s and women’s 135-pound bracket as well as exciting super fights between Tex Johnson and Matt Leighton. Josh jumps into the show to help recap this event talking about outstanding finishes from Both Tex and Junny Ocasio, and an outstandingly dominant performance from Hannah sharp. After all that we moved to the preview section previewing and Ultimate Mat Warriors 4, a 125-pound bracket that features Finishers 7 tournament winner Austin Daffron a man staging busy on the superfight scene. As well at top rooster weight Marcelo Cohen. As well as superfights from Kyle Chambers and more. We then get into our preview of Fight to Win 104 in Dallas Texas, with a huge headline bout Rafael Lovato Jr vs Yuri Simoes in what is sure to be one of the highest level matchups ever produced by the promotion. This card is stacked with standouts like DJ Jackson, Nathiely Jesus, Formiga, and Tracy Goodell. We preview the inaugural event for SOGI 1 and it’s multiple divisions and superfight card featuring many grapplers we see frequently on the show Junny Ocasio, Sam Micale, Nick Rodriguez, Zach Edwards, and many more. Last, but certainly not least, Dusty Hernandez Harrison headlined the first Roc Nation boxing event on Fox Sports 1.
