“The state of mind is more important than your body being prepared.  When you compete, your body will not always be 100%, but your state of mind has to be super ready.” –André Galvão My Guest this episode is Prof. André Galvão who is a legendary Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Grappler and a professional mixed martial artist.  He holds 4th Degree Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Blackbelt and is also a Judo Black Belt.  He is one of the most decorated grapplers in history, winning 6 x ADCC and 6 X IBJJF World Championships.  Prof. Galvão is the co-founder of Atos Jiu Jitsu in San Diego California and was inducted into both the IBJJF and ADCC Hall of Fame. This episode is filled championship wisdom.  We discuss what it takes to become a world champion, diving deep into training methods and how to cultivate a competitive mindset.    My key takeaway is that Balance is the key to performance.  You have to find balance in your training and in your life.  You have to be honest about your strengths and weaknesses and put the time and effort with the correct plan to develop to your full potential.  The journey is different for everyone and our ability to find Joy on and off the matts is extremely important to achieve Balance and avoid burnout.  Tune in for an insightful conversation with a world champion.

Forever White Belt

Michael is a second degree Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt under André Galvão, of the elite Atos academy, Michael is widely recognized as one of the most talented competitors of his generation. Michael started making waves in jiu-jitsu's competitive scene early on, winning his first world title as a blue belt in 2011, he followed his early success winning 2 more “Mundial” gold medals at purple and brown belt, and his victories are far too extensive to read on and on about. In October 2019, Michael moved to Colorado where he founded his own academy alongside fellow Atos teammate, YJ Lee, and they named it Lōgōs Jiu-Jitsu Academy. I'm gonna be honest this was one of my favorite episodes, there are so many great takeaways I got from it, and I get the sense that you will as well. It became immediately clear that Michael is a highly intelligent, self aware, and present individual. These characteristics manifest themselves in very interesting ways, one of which is that Michael has a very high fight IQ. Not only is he aware of what and how he needs to train and iterate, but he also has earnest respect and reverence for his competition. I feel lucky to have engaged with Michael in a very interesting transitional period in his life, going from single focused competitor to an academy owner/leader role where responsibilities and priorities can vary greatly. Michael is refreshingly calm, candid, and laid back with me and more importantly himself. An important highlight I'd like to make which could get lost is the importance of his father Michael Liera Senior (also a black belt), they seemed to have a very special connection in that Michael Senior exposed Jr to various interests (a lot more than many others have done) only to finally land on BJJ. This type of special mentorship is the foundation of Michaels's greatness thus far, I mean his other instructors were Saulo Ribeiro and Andre Galvao for goodness sake! Some housekeeping notes, in the episode Michael makes several references to "HQ", which refers to ATOS headquarters in Southern California. Aaron is a multiple time Fight To Win Pro Veteran and Winner, Multiple Time IBJJF Medalist and has competed in several tournaments winning and making the podium in almost all of them. He has a fantastic YouTube channel teaching Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and it is clear he is driven by a passion to spread the art that helped shape his life. He is a young and ambitious entrepreneur and newlywed who has practiced several other martial arts including Muay Thai, Jeet Kune Do, Boxing, and Wrestling. He was an instructor at The Bernardo Faria Academy, he is also the first employee hired by BJJ Fanatics where his role as Senior Product Manager keeps him busy at present. This is one of those rare young (27 as of this recording) up and coming instructors that I akin to a fantastic growth stock opportunity. Meaning if I could put money on him to compound in value I would. Once you see Aaron's YouTube channel you will see why, he has an approachable yet, highly technical, yet easily digestible way to teaching BJJ which checks all those boxes which is a rarity for someone with so much runway left. I can see why Bernardo Faria decided to not only coach and mentor him but to award Aaron as his very first black belt, what a tremendous honor. Aaron is refreshingly candid, surprisingly self aware, an absolute gentleman, and a class act. Make sure to check out his two instructional's on The Leg Drag and The Half Butterfly on BJJ Fanatics and make sure to check out his amazing YouTube channel with over a years worth of highly produced content, it's quality stuff. Also, check out Aaron and his wife Bruna's dog training company Rise K9 Dog Training that not only does all sorts of dog training but also trains worst case scenario dogs on their last strike it's amazing stuff. https://risek9training.com/. Josh sits down with Professor Andre Galavo, 5x IBJJF Blackbelt World Champion, 2011 ADCC Double Gold Champion, and 3x ADCC Superfight Champion. Professor Galvao is arguably the greatest ADCC competitor of all time as he is the only athlete ever to win the ADCC superfight with a submission win, and he hold the record for longest reign as ADCC superfight champion (6 years as the champion). The previous record was 2 years. He is one of two founding members of Atos Jiu-Jitsu, (the other being Ramon Lemos), one of the most successful gi and nogi competition teams on the planet. He is currently preparing for his last ADCC superfight title defense against Felipe Pena which will take place this September (2019). Hinger and Galvao focus their conversation on training and competition mindset.
