Otavio Sousa Full Name: Otávio Ferreira de Sousa Nickname: Although seldom used, ‘The Steamroller' has been mentioned as a nickname by some of the media, this would be due to his strength and the fast pace he usually imposes in his fights. He started training jiu-jitsu when he was 13 years old, after an invitation from a friend who already trained at Recife's Gracie Barra headquarters. The Gracie Barra – Recife was an academy led by José Olímpio (also known as “Zé Radiola”), a charismatic instructor who developed several high-level athletes, including Braulio Estima, Victor Estima, Bruno Alves to mention a few. At the Gracie Barra academy, Otavio Sousa became one of the main names in the lower ranks of BJJ earning himself several titles, including a world championship in 2007 as a brown belt. After his win at the Mundial de Jiu-Jitsu, Otavio Sousa earned his black belt from the hands of Carlos Gracie Junior, the head of the Gracie Barra franchise. E.N.: Though Otavio Sousa was mainly coached by José Olímpio, it was common practice within Gracie Barra to have the founder of the academy hand the black belts. After receiving his black belt, Otavio Sousa was invited to lead the Gracie Barra Academy in Irvine, California which was owned by Chris Pizzo. Sousa worked there a few years, but that relationship ended unexpectedly in unfortunate circumstances. According to the many internet forums who debated the issue at the time, Otavio was fired by E-mail while on vacation, by the gym's owner. The reason for the dismissal (according to Pizzo) was that Otavio spent too much time competing and touring for seminars, while not dedicating enough effort to the gym. This went against many of Sousa's student's beliefs who left the academy in a show of support for their instructor. Among the people who followed Otavio out were A-listers such as ‘Budo' Jake, sports commentator, and CEO of the company BudoVideos.

Sign up to "Fitness is our Right!" https://sites.google.com/view/fitnessisourright/home During the pandemic, Quebec mandates have been unfairly placed on gyms and small businesses, while big businesses are profiting more than ever. No scientific evidence has linked the source of Covid-19 primarily to gyms who act responsibly. Yet, gyms have been scapegoated and regarded as unimportant and unessential. Malls, subways, schools and other high traffic organizations are still up and running. Yet, none of these organizations are as essential to health as diet and exercise. Fitness is our right! We should be allowed to train within strategically thought out Covid precautions over being totally shutdown which can prove to be worse for our physical and mental health. Many gyms around the world, and especially in the USA, are nearly fully open. Physically fit people are less susceptible to the dangers of any disease. We have the right to stay physically fit. Please join our site in efforts to organize gyms in all of Quebec to help us stay open while conforming to Covid mandates and keeping athletes both safe and fit. Gyms and small businesses have quickly been going bankrupt. Owners and employees losing their income and unable to sustain a living is no way to win a fight against Covid. Rather our aim is to implement scientifically based strategies that accord with the law while allowing us to prevent Covid and practice our right to be fit.

On today's episode I'm joined in studio by world-renowned martial artist, Braulio Estima.Braulio is a 5-stripe Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt and is known throughout the BJJ world as one of the best to have ever competed, but also, one of the best coaches to ever step on the mats.He teaches seminars all over the world, as well as training within his adopted hometown of Birmingham. He finds himself often in Jersey and I nabbed him for a chat inbetween training sessions during his last visit to the island. This chat frames his understanding of teaching around his personal and athletic development within professional martial arts. This is a conversation for people curious in the idea of working with people struggling with motivation, how to persevere, why goal setting is important but crucially why the journey is more important than the destination.-Braulio's IG - https://www.instagram.com/braulioestimaBraulio's home gym - https://www.gbbirmingham.com/Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in Jersey - https://graciebarraci.com/-You can follow me on instagram - @johnliot-Music by 'Sizzlebird' Album: HorizonsBandcamp - https://sizzlebird1.bandcamp.com/album/horizons

Braulio Estima joins the show to talk about understanding baits, how to build responses to your opponent's actions and the "Jiu-Jitsu Ecosystem". He also talks about triangles and his "Head of the Snake" concept for controlling anyone!
In this episode, I chat with Professor David Iverson of Gracie Barra Tamworth about the start of BJJ in Birmingham under Braulio Estima. Career ending injuries, alcohol and substance misuse. Jamal Patterson, Renzo Gracie Black Belt & I had a great conversation about Old School MMA, The future of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, and Business Strategies that work for Martial Arts academy owners or any business owner. Jamal Patterson is a 3rd degree black belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu under Renzo Gracie and a graduate from Colgate University. He has been teaching for over 10 years and is one of the few people in the world that has this unique experience and knowledge. He went to high school at the prestigious Blair Academy, where he placed 3rd in the country and won a National Prep Championship. At Blair Academy, he was coached by the legendary Jeff Buxton, who has coached numerous college national champions, All Americans, and Olympians. He then went on and got his degree from Colgate University, where he was a two sport athlete, competing in both track and football. He was a four year starter and All League standout for the Red Raiders and part of their historic 1997 Patriot League team that turned the Colgate football program around. After leaving college, Professor Jamal went on to attain his Black Belt in 2005 from the legendary Renzo Gracie, where he went on to win the North American Abu Dhabi Trials and many Grapplers and Naga Super fights. Not stopping there, Professor Jamal went on and furthered his knowledge of Martial Arts by extensively working and training with some of the the best boxing coaches and boxers in the world. He trained under the watchful eye of Aroz “Terrific”Gist, who has worked with world champions Kendall Holt and Pawel Wolack. He also trained with legendary coach, Tommy Brooks, who had worked with Mike Tyson, Evander Hollyfield, and the Klitchkos. He has been sparring partners with World Champion Wayne Braithwaite, Monte “Two Guns” Barrett contenders Emmanuel Najado, Patrick “Paddy Boy” Farrel, and many more. As a professional MMA fighter, Professor Jamal was at one time considered one of the top guys in the world at his weight class. He was also a member of Renzo Gracie’s International Fight League World Championship team. He’s trained with UFC champions Frankie Edgar and George St. Pierre Chris Weidman, veterans Ricardo Almeida, Gian Vallante, Nick Catone and David Branch, and world champions Braulio Estima, Matt Serra and Roger Gracie. Professor Patterson focuses on technique over strength. These diverse experiences have enabled him to understand the fighting arts as they were intended to be taught, practiced and used in both real world application and competitive fighting. _________-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------_________ SUBSCRIBE TO Listen To Lance’s YOUTUBE CHANNEL NOW If you want the NO B.S. way to master your financial destiny… Using businesses, real estate, and personal finance then learn from Lance. Well, where do I start with this episodes guest? How about we start with the fact this gent is legitimately one of the toughest men I've ever encountered, a true student of the sweet science and someone who worked for years as a door man and was a mainstay of top ‘teams' supplying security through the infamous ‘rave culture' era. He was also one of the first guys I met that was intelligently training and mixing the arts in the early days of mma. A sparring partner of Jeff “the snowman” Monson and a longtime private student of the legendary Braulio Estima... and someone who took pity on your favourite podcaster when watching me getting swamped in my early days of Bjj and took me under his wing, something I'll be eternally grateful for btw. We talk training, but more importantly we delve into the often ignored issue of mental health and specifically in men and men in combat sports. This is literally one of the most affecting shows I've done personally.. ladies and gents, I give you Mr Brian Collier! One of the pioneers of BJJ in the UK and also a great personal friend, this weeks guest is the one and only Carcara himself, Professor Braulio Estima. Starting out in Brazil with dreams of being a footballer, he took up Jiu Jitsu to help him in his judo training. Fast forward to now and you find him as a 3rd Degree Black Belt in the Art, and running the Gracie Barra Academy in Birmingham. But his influence stretches far beyond the midlands, inspiring many across the UK to begin their study of BJJ through his teaching and competing, and some of you listening may even have been graded by him A perk of doing my show is the fact I can allow a little gentle nepotism in selecting who I chat to, but this really has been a blast. He is a continual inspiration to me personally, and no doubt to many others. In my opinion he is still one of the top athletes in the world today and if you want to find out for yourself just go train with him - check out www.gbbirmingham.com #BJJ #GracieBarra #Birmingham #5ways #Brazil #Judo #MMA #MartialArts #Fitness #Art Mick's Martial Arts is a Paint Your Headphones production. "One of the four biggest influences on my life and training." That's how Mick describes this weeks guest, Neil Simkin. Together they discuss his journey through the arts, from karate to BJJ, and the joys of competing at both. They also discuss the setting up of his own mat hire business, the GB youth elite BJJ squad, and the pain of losing a trusted sensei and friend in Steve Fan. #BJJ #JKD #Karate #BrazilianJiuJitsu #Grappling #RickYoung #BraulioEstima Over 40 years of martial arts experience, Neil first rose to fame as part of the England Karate Squad, which he would go onto captain. He became the first person to hold the British, English & European Title at the same time. He retired from competitive Karate in May 2000, I finally decided to retire from competing in karate as a Triple World Medallist. But that was just the end of one chapter as he then went on to train in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, training under Rick Young and Braulio Estima, earning his black belt from the latter. He continues to compete all over the world in BJJ and has medalled in every major competition.
