Today, we welcome a British sporting legend. That term can get thrown around a lot, but as a multiple Olympic, World and European Champion, Alistair Brownlee is one of the greatest triathletes of all time. As you hopefully now know with this show, the sporting success is only one side of our guests. It's what they are doing alongside their elite performance that drives our intrigue, and Alistair is far more than the sum of his medals. The money in athletics and triathlon is nothing like the money available in other major sports, and therefore it can often be difficult to carve out a career in it, let alone look at how to invest and create value for yourself off the back of medals and titles. But Alistair took a different approach, and has been educating and investing throughout much of his professional career, heeding the advice of his coach who told him ‘if you invest this money now, that could be a year you don't have to work when you retire'. From giving up a medicine degree at Cambridge to commit to triathlon to winning double Olympic gold, including a famous London 2012 victory, this is an athlete who understands the true value a life in sport can bring to business. Newly retired, how does an elite performer fill the void left by regular sporting competition? In his own words, “I've had such an amazing career in sport and now I'm really excited about trying to be successful in another sphere”. On today's show we discuss: Sport over Education? Do you always have to sacrifice education to pursue a career at the top end of sport? How did Alistair decide that he would chase the dream of becoming a professional triathlete over his medicine degree at Cambridge? What sacrifices do elite athletes have to make in the pursuit of success in their given sport? Do they view it as a sacrifice? As an athlete it is important to have things in your life that are not related to sport, and why it doesn't mean you are not committed if you do. Finances of Athletics Is there enough money in professional triathlon to make it your full time job? What are the financial rewards on offer for winning events and performing at the highest possible level? How do sponsorships work? A more niche sport makes it harder to sign big deals; how did Alistair and his brother Jonny break the mould and sign a high profile contract with BT? What advice was Alistair given by his coach that encouraged him to invest some of his winnings and not spend them? Winning Olympic gold in London thrust him into the limelight in a short space of time. What changes when you achieve this kind of success? A life after sport: It's often said that athletes die twice, the first time being when they retire. Having made the announcement at the end of last year, what is next for Alistair? How important is it to prepare for your life after sport while you are still competing and not waiting until you finish? The rise of ‘Ultra' competitions and the attraction of finding new challenges in competition as well as business. “I've had such an amazing career in sport and now I'm really excited about trying to be successful in another sphere” Our Partners: Orreco https://www.orreco.ai Scan.com https://uk.scan.com/

Kim Rahir is a Certified Personal Trainer and Nutrition Coach who helps middle aged women tap into an abundant source of vitality by reactivating and maintaining muscle while eating to nourish their body and flourish with vibrant health and vitality. Kim has her own personal story of strength and empowerment as a mother of three who was diagnosed with MS in 2013 and decided to ignore her doctor's advice and muscle her way back to a healthy, happy life. She transformed herself from sitting in a wheelchair to lifting weights and becoming a European Champion in Masters Weightlifting in her age and weight category. Kim describes how she was diagnosed with Gilliam Barre Syndrome, admitted to the hospital without the ability to move her legs or do anything for herself. She eloquently explains the feeling of not only helplessness, but the loss of humanity and control over her life as hospital staff moved in and out of her room at all hours. She did make a full recovery, only to be diagnosed with MS several years later, and how she took charge of her life by building her muscle strength, joining a gym and hiring a coach, which eventually led her to fall in love with strength training and weight lifting, competing, and eventually becoming a coach to help other women find their own strength and power through physical fitness and nutrition. Kim's story is beyond inspiring.
G.B.'s Ross Cullen is expecting the announcement this week of who is going to represent the elite team at the Olympics in Paris. The odds on favorite is Kye White. Cullen is playing the long game and has his sights on the 2028 games in Los Angeles and the 2032 Olympics in Brisbane, Australia if Paris doesn't go his way.At 23 years old Ross Cullen is a champion. He's already been a European Champion, twice World Champion, World #8 and a British Champion. You would think most people would call that a great career but not him. He's hungry. When we spoke the other day he'd been home a few days after a long block of racing. I'm talking the Tulsa World Cup, World Championships in Rock Hill, South Carolina, the Music City National in Nashville to the European Championships in Verona, Italy. We talked about his season, travels, moving back to his parents house from Manchester, and what's next for the season if he doesn't make the Olympic team. I like this dude, he's good people and with all the folks I've interviewed on this podcast I wish Ross Cullen nothing but success.

Jack Buckner is the former two Olympic Games athlete and 5000 metre European Champion who is now CEO of UK Athletics, the governing body for track and field in Britain. Buckner has held the same position at British Triathlon and more recently British Swimming. This followed a career in sports marketing at Adidas, in the UK, Germany and the US.The impetus for our conversation was a recent announcement that UKA was entering a three way partnership with London Marathon Events and the Great North Run, to create a new group, called Athletic Ventures. This new organisation is set against the backdrop of the governing body reporting a record annual loss of £3.7m in 2023. Most of that deficit was due to the staging of major events. UKA was awarded up to £150,000 by UK Sport to help stage the Diamond League meeting last year, after it approached the funding agency for help. Despite it being a sellout, UKA is reported to have lost between £100,000 and £500,000 from the flagship event. In this interview, Buckner talks candidly about the future of track and field, World Athletics recent decision to pay athletes at this summer's Olympic Games and his aspiration to create the Glastonbury of Track and Field. Kim Rahir is a 60-year-old mother of three who was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) ten years ago and decided to ignore her doctor's advice and muscle her way back to a happy life. She did not want to have the identity of a sick person and undergo lifelong treatment for her MS. Instead, after one year of exercising, she felt "normal" again. She continued to train and worked her way to become European Champion in Masters Weightlifting in her age and weight category last year. She started exercising in earnest six years ago and has had no relapses or treatment for her MS. Her journey inspired her to leave her career in journalism in her 50s and become a health coach for middle aged women, with a focus on reactivating and rebuilding muscle. Today, she helps women tap into an abundant source of vitality by reactivating and maintaining their muscles, while ditching diet culture conditioning in favor of eating to nourish and flourish. Kim helps middle aged women drop weight, get strong and boost energy by leveraging muscle mass and mindset work. Kim offers inspiration and insight for all of us in this episode. "I literally muscled my way out of illness and I now help midlife women deal with a host of health symptoms by building muscle and strength," Kim says. "My story made me change my career from journalism to coaching and I'm on an empowering muscle mission to help women claim their place and their happiness in midlife. I think that focusing on muscle (beyond just training and eating) can be a powerful driver of self-care and empowerment." Her mission is to "help women embrace muscle and strength as the one-stop-shop solution for a host of health problems often from our thirties onwards." Her approach is to turn scientific knowledge about human health into actionable tool kits for everyday life. Kim works with women in person and online. Her clients can reach out to her 24/7 via an app and can feel supported by her all the time. After only two weeks of training with Kim, her clients report that they "feel different." Kim's “Fabulous In 15” program--requiring only 15 minutes a day-- is a holistic coaching approach that helps women implement lifestyle changes that are sustainable with a step-by-step build-up of small habits and mindset techniques that help them stay the distance. "With a routine tailored to where they are at, they can start strength training safely immediately and eating intentionally to improve their quality of life without getting derailed when life gets in the way," Kim maintains. After feeling betrayed by her physical body, Kim now believes in the "simplicity of physical strength." Kim is the mother of three grown children. She is German, speaks languages and lives in sunny Spain. She strives each day to learn something new, connect and to give back to others.
