He's one of the most well known personalities in the sport, with experience comepeting at ADCC and in the UFC, as well as coaching some of the sports biggest stars. This week's guest is New Jersey's own Tom DeBlass. We had a great chat about Tom's start in the sport, training with Ricardo Almeida and the legendary Team Renzo Gracie, as well as the biggest lessons he has learned from that training environment. Tom also gave some insight into coaching a young Garry Tonon and training with an up and coming Gordon Ryan, as well as how his role as a leader has evolved throughout the years, and much more.    FREE Back Attack Course: https://www.tomhalpinbjj.com/   Guest Links:  Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/tomdeblass/ Tom's Website: https://www.tomdeblass.com/   Support and Connect: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/tomhalpinbjj/ Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/c/TomHalpinJiuJitsu Podcast Website: https://www.insidepositionpodcast.com/ Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/47tXUZQ6EQfGRNZ9Ztm21V Apple: https://podcasts.apple.com/fi/podcast/inside-position/id1555883209

This week on the show Maine and Miranda recap the IBJJF 2024 No-Gi World, and talk about Gordon Ryan's landmark public discussion of his steroid usage during his championship runs. We also talk about Pat Downey's disqualification in his blue belt world's final match. In the news section of the show, we discussed Gordon Ryan's statements regarding steroid use in the sport and his own performance enhancing drug usage across his competition career spanning from 2016 onward. We discussed the generally unregulated and untested nature of the sport. And discuss some of the reasons he provided for why he chose to take PEDs being sparked by his desire to move out of his coach and teammate Garry Tonon's weight class. In the recap of IBJJF 2024 No-Gi Worlds we discussed Pat Downey and his finals match disqualification as well as some of the specific rules that most likely led to the disqualification even prior to the fight that took place after the match. We also discussed some of the standout colored belt performances at the tournament and some of the more impressive runs from people we are already familiar with, from other major competitions who won colored belt world titles at the event. In the recap section of the show we run through both the men's and the women's adult black belt divisions, discussing every finals match as well as the open class for both the men's and women's division. ONE Championship former HW World Champ, Brandon ‘The Truth' Vera, currently runs his very own Philippines Alliance Training Center, developing the next generation of Filipino martial artists right where he got his own professional start training in submission grappling. His storied career climbing the ladder of the world of combat sports started out early while growing up in Norfolk, Virginia, where he competed as a collegiate wrestler with Old Dominion University. He went on to join the military's prestigious Greco-Roman wrestling team as a member of the US Air Force. Despite leaving the service with an arm injury, Vera began studying the art of submission grappling with a vigor, training in MMA under some of the best coaches in the world, and going on to compete in both HW & LHW divisions all over North America until 2014. He then left the UFC and made his debut at ONE: WARRIOR'S WAY, with a 1st Rd stoppage against Igor Subora; following that up with his infamous 26-second KO of Paul Cheng just a year later to secure the inaugural ONE HW World Championship. He's continued his legendary career with the promotion ever since then and plans to hold the belt again before he retires. Vera catches up with BEs own Danny O'Donnell in an exclusive Bloody Elbow Presents Interview. They discussed bouts on last Friday's ONE event, what it's like fighting in 2 divisions, the transition from the UFC to ONE, and his future plans, as well as his thoughts heading into the big ONE-X 10th Anniversary mixed discipline card on March 26th. * We apologize in advance for some intermittent audio issues we had with background noises throughout this interview that were beyond our control. Q1: There was a huge ONE Championship card on Fri, Mar 11., ‘ONE Lights Out! The co-main event was between BWs Bibiano Fernandes & John Lineker. What were your thoughts on both of those guys & that fight? — At 0:39 Q2: It's going to be really interesting to see what Bibiano does from here, what he decides to do being over forty, he surprisingly looks like he still has a lot more in him... — At 3:20 Q3: Moving on to the main event for the ONE LW Championship between Thanh Le & Garry Tonon which ended in 56 seconds... what were your thoughts on that fight? — At 4:02 Q4: You mentioned Thanh Le's preparation, he was training his jiu-jitsu with Ryan Hall, do you think that helped him with those heel hook attacks? — At 6:02 Q5: Brandon asks Danny... Who do you think Le fights next? — At 7:42 Q6: Speaking of who Le might fight next, Martin Nguyen? He got a win on the card as well... — At 8:01 Q7: What was it like to make that transition from the UFC to ONE back in 2014? — At 8:34 Q8: You've fought for the LHW title and held the HW title, what are your thoughts on where you see yourself moving forward in ONE, 2 belts? — At 12:59 Q9: One of the cool things that ONE is doing is having individual martial arts disciplines on cards like the upcoming ONE-X card — could you ever see yourself fighting a match like that? — At 13:58 Q10: You are approaching the milestone of 20 years in the mixed martial arts game, what does that mean to you? — At 14:51 Q11: Not a lot of people have been able to create an MMA career on their own terms like you've done in multiple promotions, you are a pioneer who laid the road map on how others can craft their careers... — At 16:58 Q12: Let's talk about the big tenth anniversary ONE-X card coming up which will have multiple martial arts matches in various disciplines. There are some huge names on this card coming up, what are your thoughts heading towards that, is there anyone you plan to pick? — At 18:24 Q13: Is DeRitter LHW, MW Champion? (Brandon wants to meet him in a Catchweight match) — At 24:04. Very often people will ask me about the effects of body type on jiu jitsu. It appears that many people hold the belief that there is an optimum body type in jiu jitsu that confers advantage over other body types. Even a moments reflection will reveal that this is false. A look at the medal platform at the world championships will always show a wide variety of body types which are represented in no particular order of success. If I ask you to name for me the five most successful jiu jitsu champions of all time, I guarantee your list will show big disparities in body type. There is no dominant body type on the medal stands. There is however, a dominant body ETHOS. Champions always maximize the ability of whatever body they have been born with to perform the skills of the sport. Whilst there is no one body type that dominates the sport, there is a need on everyone's part to maximize what you can do with your body that will improve your jiu jitsu performance. Everyone's body has an optimal weight and conditioning that maximizes its performance for a given activity. It is your duty to find what that is for you and to maintain yourself close to that ideal (getting closer if competition is near). Thus any body type can win a world championship, but only one way of maintaining that body of yours will maximize your ability to perform the skills you hope to win that championship with. Here are three EBI champions. All three are very different somatotypes - Garry Tonon is a classic mesomorph. Gordon Ryan an ectomorph and Eddie Cummings an endomorph masquerading as a mesomorph. Yet all three have found a way to maximize their very different bodies to perform the skills they needed to win. Thus any body type can win a world championship, but only one way of maintaining it will maximize your chances of doing so. - John Danaher, Body type and BJJ. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/donavon-riley/support

Garry Tonon returns to recap his dominant win over Sung Jong Lee at ONE: Heart of the Lion in Singapore and discuss what's next for his blossoming MMA career. We'll get his thoughts on competing at 155 lbs in MMA, how quickly he'd like to get back to action, and why he believes Eddie Alvarez could be a likely opponent moving forward. “The Lion Killer” will also give us a timetable as to when he expects to compete for his first MMA title. Christian Lee closes out this episode and looks back on his first round stoppage of Kazuki Tokudome which also took place in Singapore at ONE: Heart of the Lion. Taking the fight on just days notice, Christian details his confidence against anyone in the division, and why he believes a rematch against current champ Martin Nguyen would have a far different outcome. Lee also gives an update on the injury that led to his sister, Angela Lee, being forced out her title fight on the same card, and what the experience has been like for “The Warrior” to share this journey with Angela as the only brother-sister duo in the sport.
