One moment they're here, the next they're gone. The UFC returned from their holiday hiatus with a pair of shows to open 2023, and have promptly disappeared again—leaving us out here twisting in the breeze. As a result, we've had no other option than to get back on our bullshit. This time around, we're remembering some of MMA's most famed/notorious/one-dimensional guard grapplers. The men who loved to dive for kneebars and heel hooks and got lit up like a Christmas tree when that didn't work. To open the show, we're re-watching Paul Sass and his fight with Danny Castillo at UFC on Fuel TV 7. We're following that up with a PRIDE classic; Masakazu Imanari's bout with Luiz Firmino at PRIDE Bushido 5. Finally, we're closing the show with Rousimar Palhares and one of the few decisions of his career, against Dan Henderson at UFC 88. As usual, we're watching all three fights over on Fight Pass. Today on the show I have the honor of speaking to the no gi Jiu Jitsu phenom William Tackett. William is a 21 year old Black Belt under Rodrigo Cabral where he teaches and trains at Brazilian Fight Factory in Austin, TX. William has competed against the best BJJ athletes in the world, racking up wins against Andrew Wiltse, Tex Johnson, John Combs, Rousimar Palhares, Dante Leon, and many more. He recently took gold at what was arguably the toughest and greatest ADCC Trails to date, an incredible feat. William and the Tackett brothers are part of this new breed of young Jiu Jitsu practitioners who were raised with a dearth of modern Jiu Jitsu data, full time practice, and most importantly incredibly deep assimilation of the art. An amazing thing about William is that he is just getting better and better. In the episode, we talk about his unique upbringing which contributed to his success, his ideas on recovery, and training specifics. One thing the CME can always count on: MMA dudes will be beefin'. This week, Ben and Chad take on yet another mysterious phonenapping, as Josh Thomson's Twitter account talked some junk about Nick Diaz, only for Thomson to later say his phone was stolen while he was at dinner. Nate Diaz wasn't buying that, and the whole escapade resulted in the kind of #GoodTime that the Co-Main Event just can't turn down. In addition to that, there is Matt Brown's impending UFC main event against Erick Silva to discuss as well as Rousimar Palhares bowing out of his World Series of Fighting bout against Jon Fitch in order to take care of his mom. All that, plus AYFKM, Just Sayin' Stuff and MasterTweet Theatre.

This week we're previewing UFC 166: Velasquez vs. Dos Santos. Since it's such a big event (including three huge heavyweight fights and the return of Gilbert Melendez) we've brought in Sportsnet.ca's Shawn Smith to help us out. We also have an interview with UFC 166 fighter Adlan Amagov just days prior to his fight with TJ Waldburger, and then a few thoughts on last weekend's UFC Fight Night: Maia vs. Shields, most notably the suspension, firing, and lifetime ban of Rousimar Palhares. Listen to us Wednesday nights at 6:30pm on CFMU 93.3 FM, and online at http://www.thehammermma.com, Last Word On Sports, and The Itunes Store, Twitter, or just email us.
In this special "Renzo Gracie raccoon attacks Connor" episode, we cover the very busy week of combat sports, handing out the Golden Coffee Shop Brownie and Golden poop, talks scorecards for the Marquez-Bradley boxing match, talk about Marqeuz's comments after the bout, Yushin Okami signing with the World Series of Fighting, and whether we think Rousimar Palhares being cut was the right choice. We're Undercard Supercard, and we're combat sports a tad hungover.
With one of the biggest fight cards of the year on tap, Ben and Chad turn nearly their full attention to UFC 166 during this week's Co-Main Event Podcast. And we only say nearly after yet another weird display from Rousimar Palhares at last weekend's Fight Night card led to his UFC ouster and called for a fair amount of discussion on episode 73. Never fear though, gentle listener, you'll get an earful about the third pending bout between Cain Velasquez and Junior dos Santos, as well as Diego Sanchez's chances in a lightweight tiff against Gilbert Melendez. All that, plus MasterTweet Theatre, AYFKM and Just Sayin' Stuff.
