« Une pop haineuse et post-mondialisée » Voici les mots de l'artiste américain d'origine irakienne, Porest pour décrire sa musique Hoyda de l'album Tourrorist (la contraction de touriste et terroriste). Un disque enregistré en 1999 à Oakland et sorti seulement en 2006 sur Abduction Records. En septembre dernier, le très très bon label Suisse Bongo Joe, aussi disquaire à Genève en a sorti une réédition. D'où cette découverte, alors merci Bongo Joe. Porest c'est Mark Gergis un adepte des compilations de musique du monde entier. Il a également joué un rôle fondamental dans la diffusion en Occident de la musique d'Omar Souleyman, chanteur syrien qui a notamment travaillé avec le producteur Four Tet Mark Gergis est un producteur, musicien et artiste audiovisuel. C'est également un archiviste. Il a notamment travaillé sur la préservation et le partage d'une grande quantité de cassettes syriennes des années 70 à 2010. Un travail de mémoire sur des lieux et des cultures qui pourraient ne plus jamais exister selon lui. La volonté de Mark Gergis avec son projet musical est de faire ressentir l'urgence des situations politiques mais de façon ludique, stimulante, parfois même, stupide. Mark Gergis est un artiste qui collecte au fil des années et de ses voyages des sons du monde entier pour rendre compte des incompréhensions culturelles. These are my talks with Calvin Johnson (K Records, Beat Happening), Ron Lynch (Adventure Time, Home Movies), Allison Wolfe (Bratmobile), Mark Gergis (Sham Palace, Porest, Sublime Frequencies), and Jamie Stewart (Xiu Xiu).
