Two new nonfiction books explore the impact of cultural forces in the world of music. First, a number of musicians, including B.B. King, Ed Sheeran, Jewel and Tracy Chapman, began their careers as street musicians. Cary Baker's new book Down on the Corner explores the history and influence of busking through interviews with performers of all kinds. In today's episode, he speaks with NPR's A Martinez about some lesser-known musical street legends, like oil drum player Bongo Joe and neo-Dixieland band Tuba Skinny. They also discuss the early historical origins of busking and the way technology has changed the practice. Then, a new book on De La Soul contextualizes the hip-hop group within the modern musical canon. In High and Rising, Marcus Moore discusses how the band created a space for Black alternative culture, appealing to fans of rap, but also of jazz and punk.   Le Festival Les Créatives fête ses 20 ans : Une édition engagée et festive à travers tout Genève Le Festival Les Créatives célèbre sa 20e édition du 12 au 25 novembre 2024 à travers tout le canton de Genève. Depuis sa création, ce festival s'est imposé comme un rendez-vous incontournable de la scène artistique et féministe, mettant en lumière des artistes engagés et des créations contemporaines. Cette année, le programme est plus riche que jamais, mêlant musiques de répertoire, performances artistiques, et débats sur des thématiques sociétales. Des noms de renommée internationale comme Virginie Despentes, Priya Ragu, et Crystal Murray font partie des têtes d'affiche de cette édition anniversaire. En plus des concerts et performances, le festival propose des tables rondes sur des sujets essentiels tels que le féminisme, les violences sexistes, la sororité, ainsi que des discussions sur la transmission, l'inclusivité et l'héritage culturel. Pour marquer cette 20e édition, Les Créatives s'engage à proposer un regard tourné vers l'avenir, tout en célébrant ses deux décennies d'engagement pour l'égalité, la diversité et la justice sociale. Le groupe Yalla Miku réécrit les codes de la musique contemporaine avec un panache inouï. Nés dans l'effervescence créative de Genève, loin des clichés de cité bancaire et haut lieu du luxe, ces artistes nous entraînent dans une aventure sonores hors du commun, où les mondes, les époques, et les genres musicaux fusionnent. Fondé sous l'égide du label suisse Bongo Joe Records, Ce groupe est l'aboutissement de la collaboration entre le duo Cyril Cyril, dont l'un des membres est Cyril Yeterian, fondateur du label, avec le duo helvète Hypercult, et trois talentueux musiciens originaires d'Afrique du Nord et de la Corne de l'Afrique débarqués à Genève suite à un exil : Anouar Baouna, virtuose marocain du guembri, Samuel Ades, maestro érythréen du krar, et Ali Boushaki, expert algérien de la darbouka. Ensemble, ils forment Yalla Mikku, un combo transfrontalier qui incarne l'essence même du Genève underground : un lieu où la diversité culturelle et la créativité foisonnent loin des clichés de la finance et du luxe, un Genève alternatif animé par ses squats artistiques, ses espaces autogérés et une mosaïque de restaurants portugais, érythréens ou libanais. Le nom Yalla Miku, écho à l'enthousiasme ("Yalla" en arabe) et au caractère avant-gardiste (Miku, référence à l'hologramme japonais), encapsule parfaitement l'esprit du groupe : une fusion audacieuse entre les rythmes hypnotiques gnawa, la mélodie pentatonique du krar, le krautrock allemand et des vibrations électroniques psychédéliques. Une alchimie qui défie les frontières musicales et culturelles. Lors du festival Trans Musicales de Rennes, j'ai eu le privilège de plonger dans l'intimité de cet ensemble lors d'un échange avec Cyril Yeterian, célébrant le dixième anniversaire de Bongo Joe records par la même occasion. À travers ce moment, nous explorons les coulisses de la création de leur premier album éponyme, reflet d'un Genève métissé et alternatif et d'un groupe au destin singulier prêt à renouveler le paysage musical de la sono-mondiale.

Comme chaque année début décembre, on prend la direction de Rennes à l'occasion des Trans Musicales pour leur 45ème édition. Le festival breton, épicentre des musiques émergentes et des nouvelles tendances. Qu'ils soient d'Île-et-Vilaine, du Maroc, d'Iran, du Pays de Galle, de Suède, du Kenya, du Sénégal... plus de 35 pays et territoires représentés cette année. Dont la Suisse, pays très présent cette année à Rennes avec notamment un beau focus sur le label Bongo Joe. Tellement beau focus que c'est Félix Vincent, le graphiste derrière l'identité visuelle du label de Genève, qui s'est occupé de l'affiche des Trans cette année. La Suisse on la retrouvera au micro de Tsugi Radio avec le duo de Zurich, Ikan Hyu, et aussi avec Ndox Electrique projet sénégalais qui pratique le rituel adorciste, on va découvrir tout ça, et signature de la maison Bongo Joe. Et puis impossible de ne pas tendre un micro à la scène bretonne, toujours soutenue avec passion par les Trans : on accueillera le groupe de Vannes, Our Lights, et aussi la Rennaise, Championne. Mais on attaque avec une autre championne, notre chroniqueuse Angèle Chatelier et sa revue de presse musicale.

En Bretagne, les festival défricheur des Trans Musicales fait cette année un focus sur la scène suisse et les dix ans du label genevois Bongo Joe, avec une dizaine de groupes sur les 80 de trente-cinq nationalités différentes programmés du 6 au 9 décembre 2023 à Rennes. Olivier Horner a rencontré Jean Louis Brossard, directeur artistique et cofondateur des Trans Musicales; Gilles Valet, programmateur du Festival de la Cité à Lausanne; Cyril Yeterian, patron du label Bongo Joe et musicien de Yalla Miku ainsi que Bound By Endogamy, duo genevois dont le premier album sort sur le label Bongo Joe.

Entre le colombian crunch de Pixvae et les énergies créoles du maloya de l'île de La Réunion, un alliage brûlant s'est opéré entre des musicien.ne.s prêt.e.s à bousculer les codes. An'Pagay forme une nouvelle famille, grande ouverte aux traditions qui la font grandir et aux additifs qui la font vibrer. Le nom de cet opus fondateur n'est pas anodin. Somin Tegor est une rue de Saint-Benoit, commune de La Réunion où le compositeur-chanteur-musicien Luc Moindranzé Karioudja a grandi avant de s'envoler vers d'autres horizons… Cela sonne comme un ancrage aux traditions populaires des kabars réunionnais, un rappel au terreau fertile qui permet cette embardée vers ce nouveau maloya électrique mâtiné de post rock et d'autres épices improbables. Aux lignes mélodiques complexes et mouvantes écrites par Luc Moindranzé Karioudja, c'est l'expert ès crunchs musicaux Romain Dugelay qui opère pour offrir des contrepoints polyrythmiques du meilleur de ses tonneaux. Avec eux, une joyeuse bande d'écumeurs des mers chaudes : une rythmique démentielle avec deux batteurs d'exceptions, un bassiste aux grosses cordes sensibles et deux magiciennes en chanteuses. Les Disques Bongo Joe  explorent les mondes actuels et souterrains, qu'ils soient porteurs d'instruments, de voix ou de machines. Ils creusent également dans les filons du temps pour y dénicher des pépites, d'ici et d'ailleurs. Nous sommes allés rencontrer le co-fondateur genevois de Bongo Joe, Cyril Yeterian, il nous présente ce travail et cette vision de la musique.  

Nous vous proposons de découvrir un lieu culturel à Genève, Bongo Joe,  une pépite pour les amateurs de disques  vinyle (33t – 45t). C'est également une buvette avec terrasse où l'on peut boire un verre et s'y rencontrer autour d'un concert. L'arcade est gérée par l'association d'une dizaine de membres actifs. Des événements gratuits y sont régulièrement proposés. Cyril Yeterian, co-fondateur, nous reçoit dans son paradis du vinyle.
