Super Typhoon Haiyan seared the meaning of “storm surge” into Filipino minds, but in 2013, authorities were criticized for using this term instead of “tsunami”, which was more familiar at the time. We hear from disaster scientist and Project NOAH director Mahar Lagmay on what went into the public warnings for the storm surge. Survivors Mario Peñaranda and Algina Lacaba recount their firsthand experiences of the surge in Tacloban City, and Brando Bernadas reflects on the city's efforts to improve its disaster risk reduction and evacuation protocols since the storm. Anthropologist Pamela Cajilig shares how pride and poverty influenced people's evacuation decisions, and Nobuhito Mori, Lea Soria, and Phillip Lapidez shed light on the particular geography and history that make Tacloban vulnerable to catastrophic storm surges. Our guest studied overseas to be a geologist specializing in volcanos, and realized the skills he learned could be applied to disaster analysis and preparedness. He cites examples where disaster was averted because of new tools, but also bemoans the outdated hazard maps that underestimated the storm surge in Leyte that killed thousands during super typhoon Yolanda. What we need, Lagmay explains, are hazard maps that project the impact of climate change, which makes predictions based on the historical record irrelevant and potentially catastrophic, such as what happened in Leyte. The Philippines is so disaster-prone, Dr. Lagmay says, that an army of “citizen scientists” is needed to gather data for disaster prevention. He recalls the government's groundbreaking Project Noah that produced “hazard-specific, area-focused, and time-bound warnings” that saved many lives, yet was terminated several years ago with the change in administrations. Science should be above politics, Lagmay asserts, but political meddling plagues scientific work and disaster preparedness. Using Technology to Help Us Reconnect to Nature It might surprise you to hear that technology can help you reconnect with the natural world. Most of the time, we see the digital world as the opposite of Mother Nature. It's artificial, it's virtual, and you spend a lot of time looking at a screen instead of the landscape. You might even see technology as a contributor to environmental degradation. After all, the land and oceans are filling up with all sorts of junk, even up in space it's full of discarded technology. But you can use technology and the internet and your smart devices to help you not just connect with nature again, but gain a greater understanding of it, even help to save Nature! Here are some smart ways to start helping make a greener future. 1. Nature Apps Yes, there does seem to be an app for everything, and the natural world is no exception. You don't need to carry heavy guides and maps around with you. You can hold everything on your smartphone, from national park guides to a bird, animal, and plant identification app. Look for apps like Leafsnap, which uses your photos to identify plants, Audubon's apps for birds and even apps that will identify species from birdsong! 2. Become a citizen scientist Wildlife organizations are increasing their capacity for field research by making apps available to help track wildlife numbers. Organizations like Project Noah and the National Wildlife Federation rely on citizen participation to gather data on bird and animal sightings. You can also report sick or injured creatures on your smartphone. You can contribute to large scale research projects tracking particular problems. If you find a starfish washed up on the beach, you can use the hashtag #sickstarfish to help track the mystery disease killing starfish around the world. Citizen science is fun, gets you outdoors, and gives you a vital role in wildlife protection. 3. Educate yourself The internet is crammed full of information that you can access with a few keystrokes. Stay up to date on the latest research on the natural world and see what people are doing to help protect endangered species. Indigenous people around the world are using webcams and drones to protect animals like rhinos from poachers and to monitor illegal logging in sensitive rainforests and mining pollution of water sources. Technology is a powerful tool that you can use to find out more about the natural world and to help save it for future generations. Michael is joined by Ted O'Brien MP, NLP Federal Member for Fairfax / Chair of Standing Committee on the Environment & Energy, regarding a new national conservation mission launched last week dubbed ‘Project Noah’, that aims to combat the killing of native wildlife by feral cats.   “Feral cats kill over three billion native animals across Australia each year, equating to a kill rate of more than 1,100 per cat”, says Mr O’Brien.     “More wildlife is killed by feral cats on an annual basis than all the wildlife that perished in last year’s Black Summer Bushfires, which really puts this problem in perspective.   “Feral cats need to be culled, but it’s going to take time before we have the technology to rid these lethal carnivores from our natural environment at the scale required, and in an affordable and humane way.”   “And this is where Project Noah comes in”.     Project Noah would be a conservation mission aimed at expanding Australia’s network of predator-free fenced areas and islands.   It would bring together the expertise and resources of governments, communities, the private sector and philanthropic groups to protect threatened native species from the predation of feral cats and other predators. In the past few episodes, we have spent a lot of time discussing the future: the future of unions, the future of the planet, the future of propaganda, the future of democracy and so on. But how can we even begin to conceptualize the idea of future? My guest today is Noah Sobe, Senior Project officer for Education Research and Foresight at UNESCO. Later this week at the UN general assembly, he will be launching a project entitled “Futures of Education: Learning to Become.” This new project aims to generate global engagement and debate on learning and knowledge in relation to the multiple possible futures of humanity and of the planet. In our conversation, we interrogate the meaning of the future and what this might mean for education. Based on author Justin Cronin’s best-selling trilogy of the same name, "The Passage" is an epic, character-driven thriller written by Liz Heldens. Executive-produced by Emmy Award winner and Academy Award and Golden Globe nominee Ridley Scott (“The Martian,” “Gladiator”) and writer/director Matt Reeves (“Dawn of the Planet of the Apes,” “Cloverfield”), "The Passage" focuses on Project NOAH, a secret medical facility where scientists are experimenting with a dangerous virus that could lead to the cure for all disease, but also carries the potential to wipe out the human race. When a young girl, Amy Bellafonte, is chosen to be a test subject, Federal Agent Brad Wolgast (Mark-Paul Gosselaar) is the man who is tasked with bringing her to Project NOAH. Ultimately, however, Wolgast becomes her surrogate father, trying to protect her at any cost.
