What do you do when the pain gets heavy, your mind gets loud, and quitting feels easier than continuing forward? In this deeply honest and inspiring conversation, Dr. Zach Clinton sits down with endurance runner and mental health advocate Edwin Martin to talk about resilience, suicide awareness, faith, mental toughness, and the hope that can still be found in the middle of suffering. From running 24 straight hours in honor of the 70 suicides in Charleston County last year to completing a 194-mile run across the state of South Carolina to support mental health initiatives, Edwin shares how choosing hard things transformed not only his body, but his mind, identity, and relationship with God. Together, they unpack Men’s Mental Health Awareness Month, the silent struggles many men carry, the power of brotherhood and community, overcoming limiting beliefs, and why “chosen suffering” can prepare us for life’s hardest moments. Most importantly, this episode is a reminder that no matter how far behind you feel, how broken your past may seem, or how exhausted you are in the present moment, you are loved, your story matters, and with Jesus, there is always hope on the other side of the pain. In this episode of the Athletics Ontario Running Podcast, host John Shep and Brian break down the brand's relentless entrepreneurial spirit and its deep commitment to the trails, highlighted by Altra's massive new lead sponsorship of Ontario's own Sulphur Springs Trail Race. Brian shares the strategy behind their intentional growth across Canada and their mission to keep the sport accessible for the next generation of athletes. From hacking shoes at a kitchen table to dominating the road and trail markets, Beckstead's journey is a masterclass in community-first leadership. You can do everything “right.” Build the career. Earn the recognition. Create a life that looks successful from the outside. And still feel like something inside never quite caught up. Like one version of you built the life…and another version is still waiting to be seen. In this episode, I sit down with Daria Burke, USA Today bestselling author of Of My Own Making and a business leader featured in Forbes, Vogue, and Women's Wear Daily. On paper, she built an extraordinary life. But beneath it, she was carrying a childhood shaped by poverty, addiction, and loss…until a single moment cracked open everything she had spent decades holding together. We explore: Why success often amplifies unresolved emotional patterns instead of fixing them The hidden reason high performers feel disconnected even at the peak of achievement Why insight alone does not create real change and what actually does How trauma lives in the body long after the mind believes it has moved on The cost of becoming “the one who made it out” and why it rarely feels like freedom What it really takes to shift your relationship with your past without being overwhelmed by it How healing begins in small, grounded steps when everything feels shut down If you have ever thought, “I should be over this by now”…but something in you still feels stuck… this conversation will meet you there. Because healing is not about rewriting your past. It is about changing how it lives inside you now. And that changes everything. If this conversation resonates, Daria's book Of My Own Making goes deeper into her story and the path she took to rebuild her relationship with her past. And if you want to apply these ideas in relationships, explore Quantum Love for practical tools to support that work. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

In this episode of the Athletics Ontario Running Podcast, we're joined by Sasha Wolff, the powerhouse founder of the non-profit Still I Run. Sasha's journey didn't start at a starting line; it started in a hospital bed in 2011 during a battle with clinical depression. It was there she discovered that while therapy and medication were vital, movement was the missing piece of her recovery puzzle. This realization eventually transformed from a personal lifeline into Still I Run, a non-profit organization dedicated to the intersection of mental health and distance running. The organization now serves as a digital sanctuary that dismantles the "elite athlete" archetype, welcoming participants of all backgrounds and abilities. Through initiatives like the May mental health run streak—a 31-mile challenge at any pace—Wolff prioritizes consistency over intensity. By shifting the focus away from performance metrics, she reframes running as a practice of grace and healing where every mile is a victory for mental clarity. So much to gain from this episode! This is an episode with Don Gillies I recorded for the Conversations With Code 9 Podcast which I, of course, love to share with you legends on this show too. We kicked off chatting about his time in Victoria Police initially followed by 37 years as a paramedic… and the reality of what that kind of life actually does to you. Not just mentally, but physically too. PTSD, yeah… but also years of chronic pain that he just pushed through like most first responders do. Shoulder gone. Neck issues. Constant pain sitting at a low hum every single day… until one day it wasn’t a hum anymore, it was a full system crash on the side of the road. A moment that changed everything. Don talks about the impact of chronic pain and it's relationship with mental health... He's just had FIVE surgeries in a short window. Neck fusion. Knee replacement. Eyes done. Thumb rebuilt. Basically, a full body overhaul… a process that was done with his psychiatric team in his corner every step of the way. And surprise, surprise… when the body started to feel better, so did everything else. A pretty powerful reminder that we can’t separate our physical health from our mental health… no matter how much we try. In a recent discussion hosted by the Pennsylvania Association of Township Supervisors, local leaders shared the various zoning challenges and public pressures caused by the rapid expansion of data centers. Township officials emphasized the importance of proactive regulation, noting that failing to update ordinances early can leave municipalities vulnerable to massive development projects that bypass new rules. These facilities present significant concerns regarding massive energy consumption, potential water shortages, and the preservation of agricultural land. While state lawmakers are attempting to create regulatory frameworks, local boards often find themselves caught between litigious developers and residents who are deeply concerned about their community's safety and resources. To navigate these complexities, officials recommend collaborating with neighboring municipalities and utilizing existing county guides to draft specialized zoning amendments. Ultimately, the sources highlight a growing disconnect between state economic goals and the local responsibility to manage the environmental and social impacts of the tech industry.

Most of us aren't running billion-dollar corporations… we're just trying to survive our inbox. But here's the uncomfortable truth: whether we like it or not, we are all participants in corporate systems — where we work, what we buy, and who we support. In this episode, Nicole Kalil sits down with Sarah Federman, author of Corporate Reckoning, to unpack what happens when companies are forced to confront their past — from ties to slavery and genocide to modern-day scandals and ethical failures. Spoiler: ignoring it doesn't make it go away. This conversation dives into the real work of accountability — not the PR-polished version, but the messy, necessary kind that actually builds trust, integrity, and long-term impact. Because reckoning isn't about guilt. It's about responsibility. And whether you're leading a company, part of one, or just spending your hard-earned money with one… you have more power than you think. In this episode, they cover: What “corporate reckoning” actually means (and why it matters now more than ever) Why “leave the past in the past” is a convenient lie How companies benefit from confronting — not hiding — their history The 5-step framework for meaningful accountability (and why most companies screw it up) The role women play in driving corporate change through spending power and how to use your voice, your dollars, and your decisions to influence change This isn't about cancel culture. It's about conscious participation. Because the question isn't “Was this my fault?” — it's “Now that I know… what am I going to do about it?” Thank you to our sponsors! Seeing Them Live

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 17, 2026 61:06

In this episode, Charles sits down with Victor Gurbo, a singer-songwriter, guitarist, and guitar builder from Brooklyn, New York. Victor's musical journey began early — literally from infancy, when his father discovered that Traveling Wilburys recordings were the only thing that could calm a crying baby Victor. That early imprinting on Dylan's collaborators set the stage for a lifelong obsession with live music, particularly the work of Bob Dylan, whom Victor estimates he has seen between 20 and 30 times. The conversation opens with Victor recounting his very first concert at age nine — an Arlo Guthrie show in Martha's Vineyard — a memory that exists more in fragments than in full, including nodding off during parts of the set, only to snap back awake for "Alice's Restaurant." The episode is rich with vivid concert memories. Victor shares stories of seeing Levon Helm multiple times at the Beacon Theatre and Terminal 5, reflecting on how Helm's deep love for his audience was palpable, especially after his battle with throat cancer. Victor also recounts a bittersweet Conor Oberst show in 2008, where he got to hear a then-unreleased song that would later appear on the next album — the kind of "you were there first" moment that makes live music so irreplaceable. But perhaps the most memorable story is the infamous Jack White show at Radio City Music Hall in 2012. After losing their tickets outside the venue and spending an hour on hold with StubHub, Victor and his friend were gifted front-row seats by a compassionate employee — only to watch White cut the show short, apparently unhappy with the audience's energy. For Victor, a performer himself, the experience was deeply personal and left a lasting impression on how he thinks about the relationship between an artist and their crowd. Victor's life as a performer and craftsman are equally compelling. After ordering a custom guitar from legendary New York luthier Rick Kelly — who famously builds instruments from the reclaimed wood of demolished Manhattan buildings — and waiting four and a half years for it to arrive, Victor taught himself to build guitars in the meantime, eventually winning Best Band in Brooklyn at NPR's Battle of the Boroughs in 2013 with an instrument he made himself. Since then, the band has performed at the Brooklyn Academy of Music and Carnegie Hall, where a mid-show equipment failure became the crowd's favorite moment of the night. Most recently, Victor released Gurbo and Company Live 2025, a live album recorded at NYC's Cafe Wha? featuring eight tracks, including covers of Bob Dylan's arrangement of "Rollin' & Tumblin'" and Johnny Cash's "Folsom Prison Blues." Victor can be found on all social platforms as Victor V. Gurbo, and his website has upcoming show dates and vinyl copies of his pandemic-era home recording project, Outrun the Invisible Man. We walk through a completely different model of porn addiction recovery — one that helps you resolve urges instead of constantly battling them. You'll learn: • Why traditional relapse prevention fails over time • How pornography triggers are often emotional, not sexual • The real root cause of pornography addiction (stress, shame, disconnection) • Why repeated relapse is a skills gap — not a lack of effort • How to overcome porn urges by working upstream before they build • A practical framework used in effective porn addiction counseling • How emotional awareness and communication protect porn in marriage • What actually leads to lasting emotional healing and change If you've been trying to quit porn through discipline alone, this will reframe everything. Because the urge isn't random. It's the end result of pressure that's been building under the surface. And once you learn how to resolve that pressure directly, porn addiction recovery stops being a constant fight — and starts becoming a process that actually works.

It's 2:40am on the highway, driving home to Newcastle. No planning or preparation with this one — just the road and all my mind has been contending with. The same obsessions, the same questions. But tonight? It's gone up a gear.I get into the deep stuff, the thoughts that have followed me for years — why do bad things happen to good people? — and where that leads: loneliness, relationships, and life back in transport. The fact that we all are carrying our own burdens, fighting our own battles. While I grapple in real time the injustice of it all. When it seems the world is asleep, my mind goes to work. Why do so many capable leaders struggle to lead with integrity, humility, and discernment over the long haul? In this episode, Alan Fadling talks with Jason Jensen, vice president of spiritual foundations for InterVarsity Christian Fellowship and author of Formed to Lead. Drawing from Luke 3–4, Jason invites leaders to recover a vision of leadership rooted not in performance, but in spiritual formation—where identity precedes assignment, wilderness becomes a place of renewal, and discernment matters more than drive. Together, they explore how leaders are shaped by pressure, why rest restores authority, and how a life deeply formed by love can sustain faithful leadership over a lifetime. Nobody warned you it would feel like this. Everton 3–0, outrun in every single Premier League game this season, and a fanbase that's stopped being angry and started being numb. Chris and Joe don't sugarcoat it - this is a football depression. They dig into Wesley Fofana's decline, Rob Sanchez's latest horror show, and Cole Palmer's body language that's saying the quiet part loud. The ownership question finally comes to a head: three managers, two sporting directors hired from Monaco and Brighton, and contracts running to 2031. The running stats are damning. The mood is darker than it's been all season. Voicenotes on all that and more. _____________________________________ * Support the Show * Write us a 5 star review Follow the show on Instagram Share it with a fellow Chelsea fan _____________________________________ * Meet the Hosts * Chris Sheen and Joe Kevin are lifelong Chelsea fans who've been going to Stamford Bridge for over 30 years. On this episode of The Bandwich Tapes, I sit down with guitarist, singer, and songwriter Trey Hensley, and it's a conversation I've been looking forward to for a long time. Trey has built a reputation as one of the most electrifying acoustic guitar players around, and we talk about the moment he finds himself in now—stepping back into a solo role after a decade performing as part of a duo. He's candid about what that transition felt like at first and how embracing that shift has opened the door to new creative possibilities.A big part of our conversation centers on feel and energy in recordings. Trey and I dig into why so many of the records we love breathe and move in ways that feel alive—often recorded without a click track—and why some of that electricity can disappear when studio perfection becomes the goal. It's a thoughtful discussion about spontaneity, musical trust, and the value of leaving room for human feel.We also talk about his upcoming album Can't Outrun the Blues, releasing March 6. The record leans heavily into an acoustic-forward sound, with most of the performances captured live in the room and minimal overdubs. Trey shares how the project came together, the importance of strong songs at the center of it all, and the collaborators who helped bring the music to life. Then we look ahead to another exciting chapter: a new electric, country-leaning project with guitarist Brian Sutton. Trey talks about what it feels like to plug in again after years of acoustic focus, the mix of intimidation and inspiration that comes from playing alongside someone like Brian, and how his time on electric guitar has quietly shaped the way he approaches the acoustic instrument.Along the way, we also get into the realities of modern musicianship—social media and the pressure to produce “content,” stage sound challenges like wedges versus in-ears, bluegrass timing tendencies, and the ongoing challenge of simply hearing yourself onstage. It's a conversation about music, but also about identity, growth, and trusting your instincts as an artist.Key TakeawaysWhat it's like for Trey Hensley to return to a solo role after a decade performing in a duo.Why many of the most beloved recordings breathe without a click track. The philosophy behind recording Can't Outrun the Blues mostly live in the room. How focusing on songs first shaped the direction of the new record. The creative spark—and challenge—of working with Brian Sutton on a more electric project. How playing electric guitar has influenced Trey's acoustic phrasing and tone.Real-world musician topics: social media pressure, stage monitoring (wedges vs. in-ears), and bluegrass timing tendencies.Music from the EpisodeCan't Outrun the Blues — Trey HensleyOne White Line at a Time — Trey HensleyTucson — Trey HensleyAbout the PodcastThe Bandwich Tapes is a long-form conversation podcast where host Brad Williams sits down with some of the most thoughtful musicians, composers, and artists working today. Allie spent 26 years drinking, built a career in the music industry, and ran marathons and 100‑mile ultras trying to outrun how much she hated herself. On the outside she was the hard‑drinking goth with the dream job and big races; on the inside she was depressed, suicidal, and convinced the next achievement would finally make her “enough.”In this episode, Allie shares how lockdown and a near‑suicide moment forced her to stop running from herself, get sober at 40, lose everything – and then slowly rebuild a life based on her values: kindness, honesty and integrity. We dive into alcohol, ultra running, identity, why you can't outperform self‑hate, and how she now coaches others to focus on mindset over medals and “do the work” one honest action at a time.Timestamps0:00 – Meet Allie: music industry, ultra running & why she finally stopped drinking1:26 – Childhood & first drink: big family, no space for feelings, discovering alcohol at 144:00 – Dream job, nightmare culture: record label life, “you're lucky to be here” & work‑hard/play‑hard drinking9:40 – Running to cope: first run to avoid suicide, marathons & 100‑mile races while still drinking16:25 – Lockdown & rock bottom: isolation, toxic relationship & the night she planned to end her life19:46 – Therapy & values: meeting Theo, ACT, and uncovering kindness, honesty & integrity as core values26:00 – Rebuilding sober: starting a coaching business, mindset > medals, and redefining success in sportKey TakeawaysYou can't outrun self‑hateNo race, job title or external achievement will fix an internal belief that you're not enough. Allie proves you can be “killing it” on paper and still be dying inside.Alcohol sells you a lieIt presents itself as the solution to anxiety, trauma and impostor syndrome, while quietly making them worse. For Allie, alcohol wasn't the problem… until she realised it had become her whole personality.Sport can be a mask as much as a medicineUltra running gave Allie purpose and community, but it also became a way to prove she was “fine”. You can be running marathons and 100‑milers and still be deeply unwell.Values are a turning point, not a buzzwordIdentifying kindness, honesty and integrity as her core values – and realising she'd been living against them – was the real catalyst for change, more than any single race or event. There's no self‑sabotage, only self‑preservationThose urges to quit, to pull the plug or to stay small are often your brain trying to protect you from pain. Naming that changes how you respond to it.Mindset > medals (and times are neutral)Allie reframes success around what you can control: process, effort, joy, community and integrity. Finish times and podiums are byproducts, not the point.Doing the work is daily, not dramaticJournaling, tiny honest decisions, and repeatedly choosing actions that match your values matter more than one big “rock bottom” moment or a single breakthrough.Failure and mess make the best stories – and the most growthDNFs, hallucinations, disgusting porta‑loo moments and “I completely screwed that up” races are where she learned the most about herself, and where listeners can recognise their own patterns too.Allie on Socials : IG @Ab_runsAllies BookJoin Dare Club: ClubShop: www.shewhodareswins.com Hosted on Acast. My Arcade continues to build on its reputation for creative, nostalgia‑driven gaming hardware with a new lineup that blends classic arcade experiences with modern design. The company's approach focuses on reimagining retro play in ways that feel familiar to longtime fans while remaining accessible to new audiences. At CES 2026, My Arcade introduced several products that highlight this philosophy, including a jukebox‑inspired gaming speaker, an updated handheld system, and a growing catalog of licensed titles from major gaming publishers. The company's design direction emphasizes playful form factors, authentic arcade aesthetics, and user‑friendly features. These elements support a wide range of players, from collectors seeking display‑worthy hardware to casual gamers who want portable access to classic titles.Jukebox Player Combining Music and Arcade GameplayOne of the most distinctive products introduced this year is the Jukebox Player, a device that merges a portable Bluetooth speaker with built‑in arcade games. The unit features a retro‑styled cabinet design with illuminated accents and a front‑facing speaker system engineered for everyday music listening. The inclusion of Bandai Namco titles transforms the device into a hybrid entertainment system that supports both audio playback and classic gaming. The concept reflects a growing trend in which users combine music and gameplay in shared environments. By integrating both functions into a single device, the Jukebox Player offers a compact and visually striking option for fans who want a multifunctional piece of retro‑inspired hardware.GameStation Retro Go Handheld SystemMy Arcade also showcased the GameStation Retro Go, a handheld system designed to deliver an extensive library of classic titles. The device includes more than two hundred games from Bandai Namco and Capcom, offering a broad selection of arcade and console favorites. The eight‑inch display uses a four‑by‑three aspect ratio, which preserves the original presentation of retro games and avoids the stretching common on widescreen devices. The system includes a built‑in kickstand for tabletop play and a rechargeable battery for portable use. A key feature is the company's Smart Glow technology, which illuminates only the controls required for the selected game. This guidance helps players navigate large game libraries without guesswork. The latest version of Smart Glow adds turbo and macro functionality, allowing users to assign rapid‑fire actions or complex move sequences to dedicated buttons. These enhancements support both casual play and more advanced gaming styles.Expanding Licensed Retro TitlesMy Arcade continues to grow its licensed catalog, with Sega joining Bandai Namco and Capcom as a major partner. Recent releases include Sonic‑themed tabletop units and joystick players that have performed strongly in retail environments. Additional Sega‑based products are planned, including devices featuring Shinobi, OutRun, Golden Axe, and Streets of Rage. These systems incorporate themed controls, illuminated marquees, and gameplay faithful to the original titles. The company also offers Pixel Pockets, a line of fully playable keychain systems that include complete game ROMs rather than abbreviated versions. These miniature devices appeal to collectors and fans who want portable access to authentic retro gameplay.ConclusionMy Arcade's CES 2026 lineup demonstrates a continued commitment to creative hardware design and authentic retro gaming experiences. The Jukebox Player blends music and arcade play in a unique form factor, while the GameStation Retro Go expands handheld gaming with a large library and intuitive control guidance. The company's growing partnerships with major publishers further strengthen its position in the retro gaming market. As interest in classic games continues to rise, My Arcade's products offer a blend of nostalgia, innovation, and accessibility for players of all ages.Interview by Scott Ertz of F5 Live: Refreshing Technology.Sponsored by: Get $5 to protect your credit card information online with Privacy.
