Welcome to Episode 35 of the Talent Intelligence Collective podcast! Alan Walker, Alison Ettridge, and Toby Culshaw sit down with Chris Woodward, whose fascinating journey from military leadership to strategic workforce planning offers a masterclass in talent strategy and organisational effectiveness. This month's intelligence roundup features Toby exploring whether AI agents can truly become trusted advisors in talent intelligence, sparking a thought-provoking discussion about the balance between automation and human judgement. The conversation shifts to the UK's ambitious AI skills strategy, contrasting it with the Gulf region's more pragmatic approach to talent development, highlighting the critical importance of long-term thinking versus short-term political cycles.Chris shares his remarkable career trajectory from the British Army, where he served four tours in Afghanistan, to his role as Global Head of Strategic Workforce Planning at Babcock. He offers valuable insights into how military concepts like "battle grouping" – bringing together diverse capabilities towards clear outcomes – can transform talent strategy in the corporate world. His experience reimagining talent pathways in the military and later applying competency science at Korn Ferry reveals the power of objective, future-focused talent management. The discussion delves into the challenges of demand-side workforce planning, with Chris highlighting how organisations often struggle with long-term capability building when faced with immediate business pressures. His work on criticality assessments for submarine servicing exposed stark talent shortages, necessitating innovative approaches to capability development with multi-year horizons. As Chris embarks on his next chapter establishing an advisory practice focused on organisational effectiveness, he shares three essential tips for strategic workforce planning professionals: get strategic clarity, build relationships across the business, and truly understand how the business creates value. His perspective on HR functions becoming truly strategic partners rather than cost centres offers a compelling vision for the future of talent management.Until next time, stay curious, stay strategic, and most importantly, stay intelligent!

Dr Gunnar Babcock is a lecturer in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at Cornell University, Ithaca, New York. He was a Postdoctoral Associate in the Department of Biology at Duke University. He received his Doctorate in Philosophy from the University at Albany, SUNY. His research is primarily in the philosophy of science/biology. It focuses on topics like biological individuality, species, and both modern and historical accounts of teleology. Much of his work aims to develop a new approach to understanding goal directed systems called field theory. He is also involved in the project “Does Earth's habitability for life exist due to or in spite of Darwinian evolution by natural selection?” His other research considers developments in synthetic biology, the scope of selective processes, and how biotechnologies sometimes help reveal the metaphysical underpinnings of concepts like reproduction, species, lineages, and life generally. His broader philosophical interests extend to ethics in life sciences, history and philosophy of science, and ancient philosophy. Daniel McShea is Professor of Biology, and Associate Professor of Philosophy at Duke University. He is a scientist, philosopher and author. His work focuses on 2 main areas: 1) Evolution of Complexity: In a 2010 book with Robert Brandon, Biology's First Law, he argues that the complexity of organisms will tend to increase spontaneously in the absence of natural selection and other forces. In evolution, complexity is easy (and simplicity is hard.) A second book, The Missing Two Thirds of Evolutionary Theory (Brandon and McShea 2020), further develops the theory, offering a quantitative formulation.2) Teleology (purpose, goal directedness): A common physical structure underlies all goal-directed systems, from acorns turning into oak trees to homing torpedoes to human passions and purposes. All of these are hierarchically structured, consisting a small thing nested within a large thing, more precisely, a goal-directed entity moving within a larger directing field.TIMESTAMPS:(0:00) - Introduction (1:00) - What is Field Theory?(6:44) - Goal-Directedness(10:13) - Support for Field Theory(15:15) - Persistence & Plasticity(22:20) - Purposiveness & Teleology(31:10) - Free Will & Consciousness(41:15) - Internal Conflicts(44:30) - Future of Field Theory(53:40) - Intentionality(55:45) - External Influences vs Internal Fields(1:01:20) - Purpose in the Universe/Meaning of Life(1:05:20) - Final Thoughts(1:06:20) - ConclusionEPISODE LINKS:- Dan's Website: https://scholars.duke.edu/person/dmcshea- Dan's Work: http://www.biology.duke.edu/mcshealab/- Dan's Publications: https://scholar.google.com/citations?user=IB5lqFwAAAAJ&hl=en- Dan's Books: https://www.amazon.com/Books-Daniel-W-McShea/s?rh=n%3A283155%2Cp_27%3ADaniel%2BW.%2BMcShea- Elusive But Everywhere: https://aeon.co/essays/a-new-field-theory-reveals-the-hidden-forces-that-guide-us- Levin, Solms, Babcock, McShea: https://youtu.be/VUszs0nALxM?feature=shared- Levin, Babcock, McShea: https://youtu.be/7ZahEQGwc1g?feature=sharedCONNECT:- Website: https://tevinnaidu.com - Podcast: https://creators.spotify.com/pod/show/mindbodysolution- YouTube: https://youtube.com/mindbodysolution- Twitter: https://twitter.com/drtevinnaidu- Facebook: https://facebook.com/drtevinnaidu - Instagram: https://instagram.com/drtevinnaidu- LinkedIn: https://linkedin.com/in/drtevinnaidu=============================Disclaimer: The information provided on this channel is for educational purposes only. Yet, the advice doesn't always agree…and doesn't necessarily work the same for everyone. The 2009 Murder of 66 year old Doris Babcock in Dunnellon, Florida Committed by 19 year old Zachary Lee Snyder.   On the evening of November 14, 2009, Marion County Sheriff's Office was contacted by long haul truck driver Cecil Babcock, who was requesting a welfare check on his wife, Doris, who he was unable to get a hold of for more than a day, which was very unusual.  Deputies arrived to find an ominous scene along with a plume of smoke rising from a fire pit located in the backyard of the home.  There was a young man inside the house, there, according to him, looking for Miss Doris, but also taking care of a few chores for since he was there.  As innocent and unassuming as the teenager at the Babcock home appeared, there was definitely something off about the whole scene...especially when it came to the source of that smoke plume surrounding the home.  Where is Doris Babcock?SOURCES:https://www.ocala.com/story/news/crime/2012/09/14/man-22-pleads-guilty-in-2009-dunnellon-murder/31908744007/https://www.gainesville.com/story/news/local/2009/11/16/dunnellon-murder-suspects-to-do-list-kill-mrs-dee/31730411007/https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JMK093VL7A8LINKS:Patreon:  https://www.patreon.com/killaforniapodPayPal:  https://www.paypal.coCashm/paypalme/killaforniapodMerchandise:  https://killaforniadreamingpodcast.threadless.com/Website:  https://killaforniadreamingpodcast.buzzsprout.com/Facebook Group:  https://www.facebook.com/groups/1296620370450345/Facebook Page:  https://www.facebook.com/killaforniadreamingInstagram:  https://www.instagram.com/killaforniadreamingpod/?hl=enX:  https://twitter.com/killaforniapodEmail:  killaforniapod@gmail.comTikTok:  @killaforniadreamingpod Cash App:  $KDpodcastSnapchat:  killaforniapod
