AS ALWAYS: The first episode of this season of Players Club is free and available on all podcast platforms. All subsequent episodes will be available exclusively for subscribers at patreon.com/chapotraphouse. The year is 2009. Baquack Odoula is giving birth to Obunglercare and telling Americans that if they like their doctors, they can keep their ashes in urns above their fireplaces after they are rounded up and incinerated (Google “doctor's plot”). Jay Cutler is filling Chicago Bears fans with hopes of a better tomorrow. Taylor Lautner is at the height of his powers. It may not be morning in America, but we all woke up at 2 PM, so same difference. Across the world, a coder employed by From Software eager to prove his mettle is told by his employers that they just so happen to have a game that is so poorly made, behind schedule, and over budget that if he really wants to, the former Oracle employee can take over its development and try to make something playable. Now free from the clutches of the Ellisons and their blood sacrifices, the man and his team work day and night to turn a quagmire that was previously called something like The Terrific Reclaim of Dark! [1+3=0 Edirion] YOU ARE INFINITE into something playable. That 30 something boy that nobody liked grew up to be Hideteka Miyazaki. And the game? Our inaugural entry for Season 2 of Player's Club, Demon's Souls. Frequent collaborator and long-suffering podcast dungeon master Patches was kind enough to join me on this first step through From's contemporary catalog. This game may be the least of From's efforts from the catalog of games it kicked off, but it's not for a lack of ability or vision. Even just making something functional out of such a mess would have been an achievement by Miyazaki and co, but they did more than that. Demon's Souls may lack some of the more brilliant level design and deceptively deep combat of later entries, but it cannot be overstated how little they had to work with and just how deeply this entry deviated from the standard fare put out by Japanese publishers the size of Bandai Namco in 2009. While everyone else was making once-challenging and open-ended titles more linear and centering every level around scripted set pieces, Demon's Souls broke the mold by harkening back to a time before endless handholding, and delivered a game that respected its players enough to allow them to tackle individual levels and bosses how and when they saw fit. For this entry, I did my playthrough on a PS3 emulator, meaning I went without the quality of life adjustments in the 2020 Blue Point remake. That said, I found myself enjoying my experience more than my first go around on the PS5 version years prior. To say this is the least challenging or exciting of the remaining 6 (or 7, if you count Shadow of the Erdtree as a separate entry) games on our docket is not a knock on this game, but a compliment to the massive leaps in quality From achieved in each consecutive release. The fact that such a catalog grew out of a game that was almost abandoned before Miyazaki became the stepfather that stepped up.  Praise aside, I don't care for Stockpile Thomas. He always has to be such a downer. I didn't ask for your life story!  The wonderful Patches can be found on Twitter (@Senator_Gun) and as the dungeon master of my personal all time favorite DnD episodes we've ever done. He does not necessarily share my opinion that Stockpile Thomas is responsible for his family's awful deaths.

Between 2018 and 2024, the turnover of Portuguese games companies went from around 5 million to nearly 100 million. In this episode, Kalie Moore sits down with Jefferson Valadares, Co-Founder and CEO of partNerd and President of the Portuguese Association of Game Development Companies, to unpack whether a country long known for exporting its best talent can become a home for original IP. Jefferson has seen the industry from nearly every seat, as Studio GM at EA, Executive Producer at BioWare, Head of Mobile at Bandai Namco, and a board member at Rovio before its sale to Sega. They explore what the AAA years taught him about when to spend and when to wing it, why big companies keep funding games they already know won't work, and what he learned running studio acquisitions at Fortis Games about why most deals quietly lose their value. The conversation also goes inside partNerd, the four-person studio he's building now, and why they're making an original co-op game exclusively for Nintendo Switch 2. Jefferson explains the thinking behind designing for asymmetric skill levels so parents, kids, and non-gamers can play together, why GameShare shaped their commercial model, and how hard it is for veteran developers to unlearn best practice and build something genuinely new. He also revisits Doppio, his early bet on voice as a gaming platform, and the timing that led to selling to Fortis in late 2021. Along the way he lays out the Helsinki parallel he sees playing out in Lisbon, why the hardest gap for emerging ecosystems is product rather than engineering or art, and what he thinks the industry is underestimating about the generation that grew up on Roblox and Minecraft rather than GTA.This episode is brought to you by Appcharge, the payments platform built specifically for mobile gaming that processes over a billion dollars annually. Roby John(SuperGaming) on how the gaming business actually makes money

Most people still think gaming is entertainment, not an industry bigger than movies and music combined. This conversation is a rare look at building a gaming studio in India that reaches 200 million players, told by the founder actually doing it. Roby John was one of India's first iPhone developers, and after his edtech startup TapToLearn collapsed, he spent two years in the dark before building SuperGaming into a studio played by over 200 million people. SuperGaming makes free-to-play mobile games like Indus Battle Royale and licenses its own engine to global giants, even running the official mobile Pac-Man for Bandai Namco. Across this conversation with host Akshay Datt, Roby explains why gaming now commands a bigger wallet share than movies and music, why he launches in India where under 1% of players pay but monetizes in Brazil where 6 to 12% do, and why he is grateful for the app store tax most founders resent. With India's gaming market crossing 5 billion dollars and a new online gaming law reshaping the sector, this mobile game development story could not be more timely.

We must guess; and once again, we have another old properly getting an anime adaptation (Dengeki Daisy) which has Helen fearing for it due to age-gap being part of his premise to Justin actually being a bit cynical about all these manga from years ago — and well after they’ve ended — getting an anime adaptation. For i 2022 købte danske Nordisk Film Supermassive Games. For produktive måske?

In the world of PlayStation, this past week was one of mystery. For instance, the director of Uncharted: The Lost Legacy seems to be rather blatantly teasing a new Uncharted game on Instagram. But is he actually? Meanwhile, the promise of PlayStation on PC seems to have gone totally up in smoke, with the quiet removal of related iconography from the PSN. Could it be a sign of things to come? Plus, Sony's aggressive new position on the PlayStation Store continues to bear fruit, as even more games are deleted and unpublished that never belonged there to begin with. Are we finally getting the storefront we deserve? Other news this week includes intrigue surrounding an interview with Sony CEO Hiroki Totoki, changes incoming for PS5's UI, potential teases for remakes or remasters of Persona 1 and 2, the wet fart that was the Tales series' 30th anniversary, and more. Then: Listener inquiries! Do you have to play the original Resident Evil trilogy on PSone to be a "real" fan, or do the remakes suffice? Why is Square Enix so hesitant to do anything with Chrono Trigger? With Capcom's Pragmata right around the corner, what are our last-minute thoughts? This internal move, confirmed via regulatory filing on February 17, 2026, shifts approximately 11 million shares—previously making PIF Take-Two's second-largest shareholder—without any sale or exit from the company. This consolidation aligns with PIF's broader strategy, including a January 2026 announcement to transfer around $12 billion in gaming-related shares to Savvy, encompassing stakes in Nintendo, Bandai Namco, and expected positions in Koei Tecmo, NCSoft, Nexon, and Square Enix. Savvy Games Group emerges as the Kingdom's central vehicle for global gaming investments. The timing is notable ahead of Grand Theft Auto VI's 2026 release, with Take-Two's portfolio featuring GTA, Red Dead Redemption, NBA 2K, Borderlands, and Zynga's mobile titles driving market focus.Analytic Dreamz also covers PIF's separate $55 billion agreement (with partners) to acquire Electronic Arts, expected to close later in 2026, further deepening Saudi exposure to AAA publishing, U.S. gaming, and international publishers. This restructuring centralizes holdings under Savvy, maintaining strong Saudi capital ties to major franchises and the industry's biggest upcoming launch. Read transcriptGrab your custom jutsu hand seals and prepare to feel a crushing sense of inadequacy when comparing your reaction time to a ninja's because we're diving shadow clone deep into the first Naruto Ultimate Ninja game on PlayStation 2! This week we're channeling our inner shinobi to explore how Bandai Namco took Masashi Kishimoto's legendary manga about a determined orange-suited underdog and transformed it into a frantic button-mashing tournament fighter that somehow convinced an entire generation of fans that they could recreate iconic Naruto moments if they just hit the attack button fast enough and screamed at their TV harder than Naruto himself. Released during the golden age of anime-to-console adaptations, the Naruto Ultimate Ninja games became the de facto way fans could live out their ninja fantasies—assuming your ninja fantasy involves janky camera angles, occasionally unresponsive inputs, and the kind of special effect visual soup that makes you wonder if you're actually watching a jutsu or if your PS2 is just having a mild aneurysm. With fighters pulled straight from the Hidden Leaf Village and beyond, these games proved that sometimes the best way to honor a beloved manga is to give players the chance to make Naruto fight characters he had absolutely no reason to fight (looking at you, random filler villains). This episode, we're absolutely stoked to welcome Cory Byrd from Byrds Eye View Comics—a fellow enthusiast of all things sequential art and gaming who can probably explain why Naruto's popularity transcended manga, anime, AND video games with the kind of clarity that makes marketing departments weep with envy. Together, we'll investigate whether these games managed to capture the heart, humor, and hyperkinetic energy of Kishimoto's creation, or if they just left us face-first in the dirt like Naruto at the beginning of the series. So synchronize your chakra, practice your most devastating combo, and prepare for an episode that's guaranteed to be more chaotic than a Sand Village invasion and infinitely more entertaining than watching filler arcs about onigiri eating contests. Learn such things as: Can a game truly capture the experience of having ninjas solve political problems through friendship when there's no friendship stat on the screen? How many ninja village headbands would it take to actually run an economy, or is that question unanswerable because the series never bothered explaining it? Is it more important for characters in a fighter to be balanced or accurate? And so much more! Last year, Sony launched it's service-based third-person shooter Concord, and it bombed worse than virtually any PlayStation-developed title in history. In fact, it was received so poorly that Sony disappeared it off the market in a matter of two weeks, gave everyone their money back, and snuffed the entire project out of existence while closing the studio that made it. Fast-forward more than a year, though, and Concord has kinda-sorta returned. Tech-savvy enthusiasts have revived the game on private servers, but Sony has already caught wind of it all and are working to nip it in the bud. Do we really need Concord to return? Why does Sony care if it does? And why do smart people work so diligently on things they don't own or have control over? Plus: Black Friday will be exceptionally nice for those looking for PlayStation hardware, accessories, and games, Sony dominates The Game Awards nominations with 19, Bungie prods its playerbase for ideas on how to improve Destiny 2, EA's F1 series is taking a year hiatus, possibly indicating the future of EA Sports, Peacock renews Twisted Metal for a third season, and more. Have you ever considered who Nintendo should acquire next? Over the years, Nintendo has brought some longtime partners fully in-house, such as Next Level Games, which they officially acquired in 2021, and Monolith Soft, which joined Nintendo in 2007 after being acquired from Bandai Namco. But there are still a few studios that feel like they belong under the Nintendo umbrella. Think HAL Laboratory, the team behind Kirby and a close Nintendo partner since the early days; PlatinumGames, known for titles like Bayonetta 2 and Astral Chain (both Nintendo-published); or even Atlus, the RPG powerhouse behind Persona and Shin Megami Tensei. Some fans even toss around Sega as a wild “what-if” scenario, given their long history of collaboration and friendly rivalry. So let's talk about it — which studios make the most sense for Nintendo to acquire, and which ones would completely shake things up?

An old piece of games industry lore has recently reemerged, and it has people wondering about a tantalizing what-if. Back in 1999, The Matrix hit theaters, and the co-creators of the film happened to have been huge fans of Hideo Kojima, himself a year removed from the launch of Metal Gear Solid. And, as was reported at the time, there was potential that Konami would allow Kojima to pursue a licensed Matrix game post-MGS. A lot of new information has since emerged about what did and didn't happen here, and it makes for a great conversation starter. So let's lean into it, shall we? Our conclusion: Perhaps Kojima doing MGS2 instead of a Matrix game means he likely dodged a bullet (pardon the pun). Other news this week includes some quiet updates seemingly being made to PlayStation Portal's functionality, leaks from Bluepoint's cancelled God of War game, the most recent China Hero Project title in the form of Loulan: The Cursed Sand, and more. Then: Listener inquiries! Following Freedom Wars, Patapon, and Everybody's Golf, what should Sony's and Bandai Namco's next collaborative re-release be? Do PC players have any reason to invest in the modern PlayStation ecosystem? Will the culture war consume Naughty Dog's Intergalactic? Does Colin type so fast that his keyboard smokes?
