In this week's episode, we are speaking with Jen Davis, the education and learning manager for The Wildlife Trusts based around the UK. Jen focuses specifically on the role nature plays in childhood and how through educational programs implemented by The Wildlife Trusts, children can access empathy to nature, and a deeper connection to themselves and others. And, we dig deep into the critical role time spent in nature plays in the development of children and young people. Jen was such a joy and inspiration to speak with. You can tell how much she loves her work and how passionate she is about implementing time spent in nature for children into the educational systems in the UK. This conversation resonated deeply with us and is so very Kindred. Thanks so much to Jen Davis and The Wildlife Trusts for speaking with us and for the work you are doing in getting our children reconnected to the natural world! Lots of Love. Are we shaping young minds or corrupting the youth? Theologian Mark Jordan joins Matt Croasmun for a conversation about the meaning of theological education today. Mark is the R. R. Niebuhr Research Professor at Harvard Divinity School, and is the author of ten books, including Telling Truths in Church: Scandal, Flesh, and Christian Speech. He came on the show to discuss his 2021 book, Transforming Fire: Imagining Christian Teaching—along the way, he reflects on Christian pedagogical principles; the question of the teacher's power and the potential to enact an abusive pedagogy; he looks at the enigmatic, provoking, and sometimes deliberately elusive teaching strategy of Jesus through his parables; the role of desire in learning—and a shared love for the divine between teacher and student; he acknowledges the expansiveness of theological education that occurs outside a classroom setting; and he questions the very purpose of Christian theological education.Mark D. Jordan is the R. R. Niebuhr Professor of Divinity at Harvard Divinity School. He is the author of ten books, including Telling Truths in Church: Scandal, Flesh, and Christian Speech. A Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, he has also received a Guggenheim Fellowship, a Fulbright- Hays Fellowship, and a Luce Fellowship in Theology.Show NotesCheck out Mark Jordan's book Transforming Fire: Imagining Christian Teaching.Louis Agassiz's story of the fish exemplifies a strong pedagogy.Teaching should center on the text itself, not the teacher: “In the space between the text and the student, I need to just step aside as far as possible and put the fish on the table.”The parables of Jesus are themselves a pedagogy. They are “enigmatic, provoking, sometimes deliberately elusive” in order to “stop the hearer in his tracks or her tracks.”The shift of theological education primarily from monastic schools to universities suggests the site of divine revelation is also primarily confined to the university classroom. The shift of theological education to universities also requires theological education to follow the schedule of a university which limits the time some texts require to be read properly. The texts being taught intend to transform students' lives with the lessons they hold.Teachers of Christian theology can invite transformation, but ultimately divine action is beyond teachers' control: “Faith is a divine gift.”Teachers often communicate to their students in bodily and affective ways in addition to the actual words they use: “Bodies learn best from bodies.”Mark Jordan's thoughts on teaching are especially true of theological education, but they can be true of other subjects as well.“Education depends on desire.” That is, it depends on the student and teacher's shared love for the divine, for other people, and for the world.Using the model of Jesus, who gently corrected his students' misguided expectations of him, teachers can also gently correct a student who “is beginning to mistake [the teacher] for the actual point of the course.”Theological education can and is taking place everywhere, not just in the classroom setting.“The question is not, will there will be a future of theology? It's where will there be a future of theology?”In many universities and seminaries, the time and expense of formal theological education prevent potential students from undergoing academic training. How can we reimagine theological education to allow for greater accessibility, even to those not interested in professional formation as a church leader?Production NotesThis podcast featured Mark Jordan and Matt CroasmunEdited and Produced by Evan RosaHosted by Evan RosaProduction Assistance by Alexa Rollow, Macie Bridge, and Tim BergelandA Production of the Yale Center for Faith & Culture at Yale Divinity School https://faith.yale.edu/aboutSupport For the Life of the World podcast by giving to the Yale Center for Faith & Culture: https://faith.yale.edu/give

Mark Wilson Jones is an an esteemed academic architectural historian. He is known for his significant contributions to the understanding of architectural history of antiquity, mostly through his seminal work on the Pantheon. He doesn't limit himself to historical research, but is a practicing architect at his own firm, Apollodorus Architecture. Previously an Associate Professor at the university of Bath, he has authored multiple scholarly books and a great number of articles. Additionally, he serves as chair of the Traditional Architecture Group and has taught at the Centre for the Study of Classical Architecture Summer School at Cambridge, and the summer school of La Table Ronde d'Architecture in Bruges. He recently made an exciting counterproposal for the renovation and replacement of the ageing Bath rugby stadium, which has caught the attention of many. Although it is far from certain the design will be taken serious by local government, it has significant advantages over the current proposal. Homeschool Insights - Biblical Home Education Inspiration in Under 10 Minutes!
What starts as a conversation on homeschooling multiple children turns into a rich discussion on the nature of learning, teaching, and avoiding the pitfalls of home education. Missy Andrews Joins Yvette Hampton to share wisdom from her many years as a homeschool mom, curriculum publisher, and literature expert. This is an excerpt from Missy's interview on the Schoolhouse Rocked Podcast. For more Biblical homeschool encouragement listen to the the Schoolhouse Rocked Podcast every Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday. Watch this full conversation on our YouTube channel. This week Missy and Yvette cover the following topics: Is it really possible for me to give my kids a top drawer, literary education when I am just one person - and maybe not even a very well-educated person? How can the concept of mastery education intensify the already substantial burden that homeschooling parents carry? How might clarifying our definition of education free us from the tyranny of booklists? If education isn't a list of facts and books, then what is it? If education is less about how many books you read and more about how you read them, then my booklist just got a lot shorter! Isn't this too good to be true? How might an unexamined view of success and identity complicate the homeschooling process? How does the gospel liberate us to homeschool our kids joyfully and graciously? MCALLEN, Texas - South Texas College President Ricardo J. Solis says the traditional ways of learning in higher education are no longer relevant to the workplace. At a ribbon-cutting ceremony held to celebrate a new industry-recognized customs specialist course, Solis said four-year degree programs are no longer the best way to meet the needs of industry. Rather, he said, the trade school approach and industry-recognized certificates are more becoming more important. “As I mentioned earlier, higher education is evolving. I alluded to… it is broken. And we have to change it to more relevancy,” Solis said.Solis said revamping the way higher education is provided was already underway before the coronavirus pandemic hit. Now, he said, the need to change is even more obvious.“We definitely know that we have to get more precise in bringing opportunities to not only the high school students but even the present adults, your 30- to 50- to 60-year olds that need that change and need that connectivity to industry.”The ribbon-cutting ceremony was held to celebrate a partnership between STC, the National Educational Institute at the National Customs Brokers & Forwarders Association of America and the Mid-Valley Customs Brokers Association. The partnership will see a new course being offered at STC's technology campus in south McAllen - an industry-recognized course to train students for a career in customs brokerage.Solis said he knows from personal experience that industry-recognized certificates are the way to go. “Customs specialist? This definitely resonates to me. I remember back in 1985 when I wasted three years going to a top graduate school in California,” Solis said.“When I finished and started working at the Port of Brownsville I realized how much I did not know.”Solis said that once in the workforce he took a six-month course to learn more about the customs industry. He said he learned more about transportation, logistics, the identification of products, the way trade is conducted in different countries, and rules of origin by going on such a course. “The traditional route is not the way to go. We have better, more relevant avenues and models,” he said.

What is the difference between education and learning? And for who exactly is dance education for? Although most of us would have to teach at some point, education accounts for much of what the present and even upcoming generation promises to offer. In other words, it's not easy and should never be taken for granted! Instead of relying on standardized education, why not adapt your way of absorbing and transmitting information as an independent learner?Zebastian Mendez Marin is an instructor, choreographer, director, dancer, actor and co-founder of Colectivo Priekopník Veverička and the Red Movement Network. He hails from Costa Rica and performed for Belgian company Ultima Vez, touring the revival of Wim Vandekeybus' legendary "What the body does not remember". In recent years, he has collaborated with the likes of Honey and Dust and Divadlo Štúdio Tanca of Slovakia. Concluding the month of Education, this episode explores what it means to be a dance educator outside institutional frameworks, also the key differences between education and learning. On this week's episode of Thoughts in Time & Space we ponder what can we learn from bad art and design. The boys share context and fundamentals on how to define a good piece of work, and then we dip into how to make the most, out of work that fails to meet those standards. We reflect on learnings from our own rejected creations and our egos surmise that the master has failed more times than the beginner has ever tried. Tune in, take this trip with us ~ and let us know how you enjoyed the ride.

Discipleship was the trend in Evangelical Christian circles when I was in school. Young converts or “committed Christians” were encouraged to talk a more mature Christian into “discipling” them. Many made it a formal process, going through books together or meeting at a particular time with a syllabus of sorts. For others, it was a more informal process, making sure it included regular contact and prayer together. For those in the recovery community, you will know it as being similar to having a sponsor. For those in the business or academic world, it was rather like having a close mentor.I had been fortunate to have some great mentors whose behavior functioned as a discipling relationship, but none would have allowed it to be labeled that way. Now that I had arrived at Seminary, I figured it was time to make it official. In a new city, a new school, and mostly lost, I looked around to see who I could trap into “discipling” me.To picture what it is like being a new seminary student, remember what the first day of High School was like, or college if you will. It wasn’t a monastery, and no vow of poverty or celibacy was not required. I ended up landing upon a hippie-like professor of Christian education who responded by denying my request, pleading busyness. With reverse Tom Sawyer thinking, I shrugged off the rebuff and told this Professor that I’d love to get off campus, and if he needed any help around the house, like painting a fence or something, I’d love to help. He laughed, asking me who put me up to this. I didn’t get the joke. As it ends up, he had been whining around the office about having to paint the fence the forthcoming Saturday.Fast forward a few days in 1979, the smell of Fall in the air with newly colored leaves just beginning to drop. There are two unskilled laborers with paintbrushes working on a yard fence, and the laughter started. One might never have guessed these were Seminary types. The seminarian went on to graduate and plant churches. The Professor became head of the doctoral program with a long, storied history at the school. Today they are in front of a microphone on Zoom during the pandemic on OC Talk Radio. Here to discuss Education, Learning, and Growth, we welcome to Church Hurts And, Professor Perry Downs.churchhurtsand.org

https://youtu.be/u-CR3lOhvd8 2 Sam 14:25-34 What is a Barley fieldSimply put- a distraction. Something that is becoming your focus and keeping you from hearing the voice of the Lord.A barley field is anything that you value above hearing and responding to the voice of the LordCalling you to anything- When God calls- we answer-Abasalom had every right to call on Joab, but Joab refused t o listen so Abasalom burned his field to get his attentionJeremiah dealt with this in Jer 25:3-11Not Listening- 3 “From the thirteenth year of Josiah the son of Amon, king of Judah, even to this day, this is the twenty-third year in which the word of the Lord has come to me; and I have spoken to you, rising early and speaking, but you have not listened.Jeremiah 6:10 To whom shall I speak and give warning, That they may hear? Indeed their ear is uncircumcised, And they cannot give heed. Behold, the word of the Lord is a reproach to them; They have no delight in it.Jeremiah 13:10 This evil people, who refuse to hear My words, who follow[a] the dictates of their hearts, and walk after other gods to serve them and worship them, shall be just like this sash which is profitable for nothing. The First commandment was “Thou shalt have no other Gods before me”We read this stuff and we think of golden calves and asheroth poles. Serving a false savior or GodBut People serve many false Gods- A false God is anything that you 1. Love more than God 2. Trust more than God 3. Worship more than God 4. Give more attention than God 5. Desire more than God 6. Give allegiance more to than God Look at the idols of America: 1.Americanism- the identity and protection of our national identity. Not bad to be proud of your country- its bad to love your country more than Jesus and have your loyalty to it than HIM 2.Materialism- The amassing of stuff- needless trinkets and consumer purchases- Nothing wrong with having or liking nice stuff, but to what end? An expense that you don't need? Think about this- what new clothes have you bought specifically during this time to be able to show someone at work, school, or church if you've been on lockdown? 3.Money and wealth- The innate focus on how much you do or don't have, worry about future purchases. Trust in the stock market, gas prices, real estate market, business trends etc- what about our national economy? What will we do? Who do you trust? God can make deserts in the wilderness? 4.Family- The love of and protection of family or the love and support at the expense of the truth of the Gospel- deep desire for intimate love relationships 5.Sports. Professional and kids sports. The idea that a person who is good at a sport has some inherent spiritual value higher than a person in your life. Deep desire for kids to excel 6.Education- Learning is key- more knowledge- more influence- more power- more money 7.Fantasy- being stuck in a fantasy world in your mind fueled by social media and TV 8. Careers- What is my job, identity, to get materialism, money, family, education, and fantasies! Those are just a few- I could go on and on- Those are IDOLS- Things that people LOVE above the LORDAll of them are barley fields- Something that needs to be burned down to get our attentionGod will do it. He'll burn down anything he needs to get our attention-31 Then Joab arose and came to Absalom's house, and said to him, “Why have your servants set my field on fire?”Some people are saying that right now? Why Has God set my field on fire? What did I do wrong? Why Does God burn barley fields? He desires complete allegiance and demands submission- he wants our whole hearts and devotion in every area of our life. As we have submitted to him, we are submitted to his power, sovereignty and influence.Hebrews 12:5-6 And you have forgotten the exhortation which speaks to you as to sons: “My son, do not despise the chastening of the Lord, Nor be discouraged when you are rebuked by Him; 6 For whom th...

We live in the technology age. Also known as the information age. Thus, we have more and easier ways to educate ourselves each day. As Apple says, "there is an app for that." However, we need to be intentional in our approach to continuing education. Moderation is best and a roadmap will help us reach our goals. Continuing Education Via the Internet A core strength of the Internet is the delivery of news all the time. Not only that, the news can be on any topic you choose. Content is not only readily available, it is always growing. This flood of information can be daunting. However, there are several tools available to organize your content and build good habits of information consumption. Learn By Osmosis The best tools available provide ways to learn while doing other tasks. These include digital mediums like audiobooks and podcasts. When you combine these with the ocean of gadgets available to consume them there is no excuse for not trying them out. These options allow us to learn while exercising, cooking, running errands, or going to work. Heck, we can even learn while we work by listening to content rather than our favorite tunes.
