Advisors on This Week’s Show Kyle Tetting Dave Sandstrom Chris Evers (with Max Hoelzl and Joel Dresang, engineered by Jason Scuglik) Week in Review (April 26-30) SIGNIFICANT ECONOMIC INDICATORS & REPORTS Monday Manufacturing resumed its expansion in March, with durable goods orders rising 0.5% from February, according to the Commerce Department. Orders grew for the 10th time in 11 months following a 0.9% setback in February. Gains were widespread among manufacturers except for makers of aircraft and computer parts. March marked the fifth month in a row that orders exceeded the pre-pandemic level. They were up 10.9% from March 2020. Core capital goods orders, a proxy for business investment, rose 0.9% from February and were up 10.4% from March 2020. Tuesday An imbalance between limited supply and rising demand continued to drive the year-to-year increase in residential prices in February, according to the S&P CoreLogic Case-Shiller home price index. The 20-city composite index rose by 11.9%, the most in seven years. Gains were broadly based but rose most in the West and Southwest. Housing prices are far outpacing overall inflation, with the core Personal Consumption Expenditure index up 1.4% from February 2020. Home price acceleration began in August 2019 and slowed only in April, May and June of last year for the pandemic-induced recession. The Conference Board said its consumer confidence index rose in April to its highest level since before the pandemic. Assessments of current conditions “soared” according to the business research group, which should further strengthen the economic recovery in the second quarter. Consumers were upbeat about income prospects because of an improving labor market and the latest round of stimulus checks. Inflation expectations remained elevated, and more consumers expressed intentions to take vacations. Wednesday No major releases Thursday The U.S. economy rose at an annual pace of 6.4% in the first quarter, though on a full-year basis, inflation-adjusted gross domestic product was up 0.4%, according to the Bureau of Economic Analysis. Real GDP remained 0.9% below its previous peak at the end of 2019. Consumer spending, which drives about two-thirds of economic activity, advanced at a 10.7% annual pace, fueled by government subsidies and the reopening of many businesses amid some lifting of pandemic precautions. The Federal Reserve Board’s preferred measure of inflation remained weak, rising 1.5% from the first quarter of 2020. At an annual pace, inflation was up 2.3%. The four-week moving average for initial unemployment claims sank for the 11th time in 12 weeks, declining to its lowest level since the COVID-19 pandemic began. New claims were still 65% higher than the 54-year average, according to Labor Department data. In the latest week, 16.5 million Americans claimed jobless benefits, down from 17.4 million the week before. The National Association of Realtors said its index of pending home sales rose 1.9% in March, the first increase in three months. The trade group’s index was up 23.3% from the year before, when COVID closings suppressed sales. With historically low mortgage rates and a recovering job market, demand for houses stayed robust amid diminished supply. The Realtors project sales of 6.2 million houses in 2021, which would be a 10% increase from 2020. The group expects the median sales price to rise 9% this year to $323,900. Friday The Bureau of Economic Analysis said consumer spending rose 4.2% in March, fueled by a record 21.1% jump in personal income, led by federal stimulus payments. Increased consumer spending resulted in an 8% rise in expenditures on goods like automobiles and a 2.2% increase in spending on services, including at restaurants and bars. The personal saving rate rose to 27.6% of disposable income from 13.9% in February.

Advisors on This Week’s Show KYLE TETTING BRIAN KILB MIKE HOELZL (with Max Hoelzl, Joel Dresang, engineered by Jason Scuglik) Week in Review (April 12-16, 2021) Significant Economic Indicators & Reports Monday No major announcements Tuesday The broadest measure of inflation showed prices rising 0.6% in March, the highest since August 2012, mostly because of higher gas prices. The Bureau of Labor Statistics said the 9.1% increase in gas accounted for about half of the monthly gain in its Consumer Price Index. Year to year, headline inflation rose 2.6% with gas prices up 22.5% as the nation has hit the road again a year after widespread shutdowns from the COVID-19 pandemic. Excluding prices for volatile food and energy products, the core CPI rose a more moderate 0.3% from February and was up 1.6% from March 2021, staying below the Federal Reserve’s sweet spot of 2% inflation. Wednesday No major announcements Thursday The four-week moving average for initial unemployment claims fell for the ninth time in 10 weeks to its lowest level in 13 months, signaling continued progress in the U.S. labor market recovery. Claims averaged 683,000 in the most recent reading from the Labor Department, down from a record high of 5.3 million last April but still up from a 53-year low of 209,250 just before the pandemic. Altogether, 16.9 million Americans claimed jobless benefits in the most recent week, up from 8.2 million the year before. With consumer spending driving about two-thirds of the U.S. gross domestic product, a 9.8% rebound in retail spending in March offered further evidence of robust economic growth. Each of 13 retail categories increased sales in March, seven at double-digit rates, the Commerce Department said. Retail sales rose 14.6% above their pre-pandemic level. However, the recovery among categories remained uneven, with bars and restaurants still 5% behind their sales in February 2020 while online retailers were up 35%. A report by the Federal Reserve showed industrial production rose 1.4% in March, rebounding from a 2.6% decline in February caused by winter storm disruptions to manufacturing. The output from utilities fell in March after unseasonably warm weather followed an extraordinarily cold February. Overall industrial production remained 3.4% below pre-pandemic output. Capacity utilization, a measure of potential inflation, rose for the seventh time in nine months, but at 74.4%, the rate stayed below its mark in February 2020 as well as its long-term average of 79.6%, which hasn’t been reached in nearly 13 years. Friday Historically low mortgage rates, high demand and low inventory propelled continued growth in U.S. housing starts and building permits in March. Both measures remained near 14-year highs. Plans for and construction of single-family houses in particular are key to furthering the housing boom. The annual pace of single-family permits rose for the 10th time in 11 months to 1.2 million units. The number of single-family units under construction and the number of completions rose to their highest levels since late 2007. A preliminary April reading of consumer sentiment suggested no change in expectations since March but improved opinions toward current economic conditions. The survey-based index from the University of Michigan reached its highest point in more than a year and suggests continued growth in consumer spending. A university economist who runs the index said consumers will keep spending as long as they feel supported by employment and incomes. He said concerns about the pandemic and inflation will temper drawdowns of savings. MARKET CLOSINGS FOR THE WEEK Nasdaq – 14052, up 152 points or 1.1% Standard & Poor’s 500 – 4186, up 57 points or 1.4% Dow Jones Industrial – 34203, up 402 points or 1.2% 10-year U.S. Treasury Note – 1.57%, down 0.99 point

Advisors on This Week’s Show KYLE TETTING BRIAN KILB PAIGE RADKE (with Max Hoelzl, Joel Dresang, engineered by Jason Scuglik) Week in Review (April 5-9, 2021) SIGNIFICANT ECONOMIC INDICATORS & REPORTS Monday The U.S. services sector continued expanding in March and at a record pace, according to the Institute for Supply Management. The trade group’s services index showed the 10th consecutive month of growth, expanding all but two of the latest 134 months. Purchase managers surveyed for the index credited the lifting of pandemic restrictions for unleashing pent-up demand. Amid the growth, they expressed concerns for capacity constraints, material shortages and human resources challenges. A report from the Commerce Department showed manufacturing orders declining 0.8% in February, the first setback in 10 months. Disruptions from winter storms in the South as well as supply bottlenecks for certain items help explain the drop. Orders were up 1% from February 2020. They rose 1.9% excluding transportation equipment. A proxy for business investments declined 0.9% for the month but was up 8.6% from the year before. Tuesday U.S. employers posted nearly 7.4 million job openings in February, the most since January 2019 and the second month in a row above the pre-pandemic mark. The Bureau of Labor Statistics showed more openings and hiring at restaurants and hotels, which have suffered more than most workplaces in the last year. Over all, job separations still outnumbered hires by 8.6 million positions since the pandemic began. Wednesday The U.S. trade deficit grew 4.8% in February to a record gap of $71.1 billion. The deficit, which detracts from gross domestic product, resulted from the value of imports rising at a faster rate than exports, a sign that the economy in the U.S. is recovering from the year-old global pandemic faster than among its trading partners. The moving three-month average, which smooths the deficit numbers month-to-month, also hit a record, widening 1% from January, with imports gaining 0.7% while exports rose 0.6%. The Federal Reserve reported that consumer credit card debt rose in February for the first time in a year. With consumer spending driving about 70% of U.S. economic activity, credit card debt can signal consumers’ ability and willingness to spend. Since peaking just before the pandemic, such debt is still down $123 billion or 11.2%. In The Great Recession, it took almost 10 years for credit card debt to recover. Thursday The four-week moving average for initial unemployment claims rose for the first time in nine weeks, hovering at historically high levels. Average claims were at about 724,000, up from a 51-year low of 208,000 in February 2020. The pre-pandemic high was 668,000. The Labor Department said 18.2 million Americans were receiving unemployment benefits in the latest week, up from 3.4 million the year before. Friday Inflation on the wholesale level increased 1% in March and was up 4.2% on a 12-month basis, the highest since September 2011. The Bureau of Labor Statistics said its Producer Price Index showed an 8.8% rise in gasoline prices the biggest contributor to inflation since February. Excluding volatile food, energy and trade service prices, the index rose 0.6% for the month and gained 3.1% from March 2020. The one-year increase in the core index was the highest since September 2018. Advisors on This Week’s Show BOB LANDAAS KYLE TETTING BRIAN KILB ART ROTHSCHILD (with Max Hoelzl, engineered by Jason Scuglik) Week in Review (April 27-May 1, 2020) SIGNIFICANT ECONOMIC INDICATORS & REPORTS Monday No major announcements Tuesday As a reminder of opportune conditions just prior to the coronavirus pandemic, February data from the S&P CoreLogic Case-Shiller home price index showed continued momentum for the U.S. housing market. The index registered a 3.5% increase in price in the preceding year for its 20-city composite. Each of the cities experienced rising prices, 17 at paces faster than in January. The Conference Board said its consumer confidence index fell a record 90 points in April. All of the downfall resulted from consumers’ lower assessment of current economic conditions. Overall, consumers’ expectations for coming months rose, according to the business research group, based on hopes that the economy would recover as authorities relax pandemic-wary stay-at-home orders. Wednesday The U.S. economy sank at an annual pace of 4.8% in the first quarter, its first setback since 2014 and the most severe since the end of 2008. Analysts expect the first estimates of the quarter's gross domestic product to get worse with subsequent updates from the Bureau of Economic Analysis because shutdowns from the COVID-19 outbreak didn’t begin until the last three weeks of the period. Consumer spending, which accounts for about 70% of GDP growth, fell at an annual rate of 7.6%. The National Association of Realtors said its index of pending home sales dropped 20.8% in March. Signed contracts were down 16.8% from March 2019, the trade group reported. Calling the setback only temporary, an economist for the Realtors cited low mortgage rates as a reason for listings and offers to rebound in months ahead but still forecast a 14% sales decline for the year. Thursday The four-week moving average for initial unemployment claims receded slightly from weeks of record levels but still reflected a historic collapse in employment. The Labor Department said the four-week average came to 5.03 million applications, following more than 30 million new claims filed in the preceding six weeks. With state problems handling so many claims, some economists say the federal figures undercount the impact of job losses resulting from COVID-19 shutdowns. The Bureau of Economic Analysis said consumer spending declined a record 7.5% in March. The dip in spending was the most severe in 61 years of data and just hinted at the devastation from the pandemic, given that most stay-at-home restrictions didn’t start until mid-month. Personal income fell by 2%, according to the report, including a 3.1% reduction in wages and salaries. Friday Shutdowns in production, supply chain and demand triggered the biggest decline in U.S. manufacturing since the Great Recession, according to the Institute for Supply Management. The trade group’s April index, based on surveys of industry purchase managers, contracted for the second month in a row to its lowest level since April 2009. The index's production component was the weakest on records dating back to 1948. A spokesman for the group said the overall setback was likely even greater than the index reflected. Advisors on This Week’s Show BOB LANDAAS KYLE TETTING (with Max Hoelzl, engineered by Jason Scuglik) Week in Review (April 20-24, 2020) SIGNIFICANT ECONOMIC INDICATORS & REPORTS Monday No major announcements Tuesday Social-distancing restrictions have begun to affect existing home sales, which declined 8.5% in March, according to the National Association 0f Realtors. The trade group said houses sold at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 5.27 million in March, and there were signs that fewer sellers were listing their houses as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. The pace of home sales was 0.8% ahead of the same time last year, but an economist for the Realtors said he expects declines to continue. Wednesday No major announcements Thursday The four-week moving average for initial unemployment claims reached yet another record high as a result of job displacements from the COVID-19 virus. The Labor Department said the four-week average rose to 5.79 million applications, reflecting more than 23 million new claims filed in the preceding four weeks. Going back five weeks, the total exceeded 26.4 million. Declines in the U.S. housing market showed in March new home sales, which fell 15.4% from the seasonally adjusted annual rate in February. The departments of Commerce and Housing and Urban Development jointly reported that an annual rate of 627,000 new single-family houses sold in March, down from the post-recession high of 677,000 in January but still above the 619,000-house pace just as the Great Recession began. March sales were less than half the all-time peak of nearly 1.4 million houses sold in July 2005. Friday A key measure of manufacturing prospects, durable goods orders, declined 14.4% in March. It was the largest collapse in nearly 30 years of data from the Commerce Department, aside from a one-month swing in aircraft orders in 2014. The setbacks were broad, led by the volatile transportation category, including commercial aircraft and automobiles. Military orders rose. In releasing the report, Commerce acknowledged that many businesses have cut back or closed because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The University of Michigan said its consumer sentiment index dropped to 71.8 in April from 89.1 in March and 97.2 in April 2019. Consumers’ feelings toward current conditions declined much more than their expectations, offering potential for economic rebound. Consumer spending makes up 70% of U.S. business activity. A Michigan economist said consumer reactions to the reopening of businesses would be critical, and if activities resume too soon and restrictions need to be imposed again, it could trigger a "deeper and more lasting pessimism." The Commerce Department said spending at stores fell 8.7% in March, with eight of 13 retail categories showing lower sales. Among the businesses suffering from closures and widespread orders to shelter in place were restaurants and bars, car dealerships, gas stations and clothing stores. As Americans prepared to hunker down at home, sales rose at grocery stores, general merchandisers and online retailers. Amid factory closings and falling demand, U.S. industrial production declined 5.4% in March, the most since the wind-down from military manufacturing in World War II. According to the Federal Reserve, factory output dropped 6.3% to the lowest level since the end of 2011. Capacity utilization, a measure of economic health and potential inflation, fell to its lowest level in nearly 10 years. The utilization rate of U.S. factories, mines and utilities has been below its long-term average since the middle of the Great Recession. Thursday The four-week moving average for initial unemployment claims reached another record high as a result of job displacements from the COVID-19 virus. The Labor Department said the four-week average rose to 5.5 million applications, reflecting 22 million new claims in the preceding four weeks. The previous four-week record was 2.6million in the fall of 1982. The U.S. housing market declined in March, according to volatile figures on housing starts and building permits. The Commerce Department reported that both measures fell to their lowest annual rates since July after reaching post-recession highs in January. Builders started 856,000 single-family houses in March, down 17.5% from the February rate and up 2.8% from March 2019. Friday The Conference Board said its index of leading economic indicators plunged 6.7% in March, the most in 60 years of data. The business research group described the "unprecedented and sudden deterioration" as broadly based, a result of pandemic-related shutdowns and led by the spike in jobless claims and plunge in stock prices. The Conference Board said its index shows the U.S. economy facing "a very deep contraction.” MARKET CLOSINGS FOR THE WEEK Nasdaq – 8650, up 118 points or 1.4% Standard & Poor’s 500 – 2874, up 84 points or 3% Dow Jones Industrial– 24235, up 515 points or 2.2% 10-year U.S. Treasury Note – 0.65%, down 0.08 point Send us a question for our next podcast. Advisors on This Week’s Show BOB LANDAAS KYLE TETTING BRIAN KILB (with Jason Scuglik) Week in Review (April 6-10, 2020) SIGNIFICANT ECONOMIC INDICATORS & REPORTS Monday No major announcements Tuesday Demand for workers remained historically high through the end of February, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The number of job openings approached 6.9 million, the BLS reported, down 1.8% from January but still near the all-time high of 7.5 million set in January 2019. In the 12 months that ended Feb.29, employers added a net 2.4 million jobs, according to the report, which offers a snapshot before mass disruptions from the COVID-19 pandemic. In contrast, in just one week in late March, 6.6 million Americans filed first-time claims for unemployment insurance. Wednesday After two months of weak recovery, the manufacturing industry returned to a recession in March, according to an index from the Institute for Supply Management. Purchasing managers surveyed for the index blamed oil-price wars and the spread of the novel coronavirus for interrupting supply chains and curtailing demand. Components for new orders and employment declined to their lowest points since the Great Recession. The Commerce Department said the annual rate of construction spending declined 1.3% in February. Analysts had expected an increase in the volatile indicator. The pace quickened by 6% from the year before, with housing leading the way. Specifically, single-family residential spending rose 11.3% from February 2019. Government spending on construction fell 1.5% for the month but was up 7.4% from the year before. Thursday The four-week moving average for initial unemployment claims reached another record high as job displacements from the COVID-19 virus continued to soar. The Labor Department said the four-week average rose to 4.27 million applications from 2.67 million the week before and just above 1 million the week before that. Prior to the pandemic, the highest four-week average was 674,000 in 1982. An economic slowdown showed in wholesale inflation figures from March. The Bureau of Labor Statistics said the Producer Price Index declined 0.2% from February, following a 0.6% dip in January. A 6.7% drop in energy prices led the decliners. Aside from volatile food, energy and trade service costs, the index fell 0.2%, the biggest one-month decline since October 2015. Year-to-year, the so-called core PPI rose 1%, the least since July 2016. With consumer spending driving almost 70% of the U.S. economy, a record decline in consumer sentiment suggested troubled times ahead. The University of Michigan index dropped to a reading of 71 from 89.1 at the end of March, the biggest decline in about half a century of data. The drop from 101 in February was the greatest two-month swoon on record. An economist with the survey warned, “Consumers need to be prepared for a longer and deeper recession rather than the now discredited message that pent-up demand will spark a quick, robust, and sustained economic recovery.” Friday The broadest measure of inflation showed prices receding in March. The Consumer Price Index declined 0.4%, the most since January 2015, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. A 10.5% drop in gasoline prices led the decline with costs for air fare, lodging and apparel also falling. Excluding volatile food and energy costs, the core index fell 0.1%, its first monthly decline since January 2010. Compared to March 2019, the CPI rose 1.5% while the core CPI rose 2.1%.
