For this episode of Brewstilled, it's a recap of the 2024 California Craft Beer Summit. For this year's summit, attendees saw a follow up from the topics addressed at last years CCBA summit. Such issues addressed were legislative updates, the growing rise of low ABV beer, food pairings and an opening address from Rob Todd from Allagash Brewing Company in Maine. There was also a trade floor that consisted of vendors such as brewing equipment, beer label makers, Hop Farmers and more. I'll be discussing it all here on Brewstilled, along with some thoughts on the state of the beer industry. It's all here on Brewstilled.

This chat with Allagash Brewing Marketing Director, Jeff Pillet-Shore was just what I was looking for to finish off the year.Allagash has been around since 1996 and is one of the OG's of the USA craft beer scene. It was started by one man with a dream who would lend his hand at anything to get the brewery up and running…welding, jack hammering, electrical, it didn't matter, and Rob Todd found a way to bring his dream to life. Since those humble beginnings, Allagash Brewing in Portand Maine has gone on to win all kinds of awards while producing some of the finest beers in the lands. It all started with a Belgian witbier, Allagash white that polarised drinkers initially, but eventually won over their hearts and minds and is now sold in cans and can be found all over America. Outside of that classic brew, Allagash pretty much plays in every other beer category you can think of.In this episode Jeff talks about:The complex and unique 3-tier system in America and how it shaped the USA market; How Allagash likes to position their marketing message in a crowded market; What it means to take a hospitality centred approach; How, even though they are getting bigger, they are still a brewer-led organisation; Some of the decisions they have made around the beers they brew, and choose not to brew; And how Allagash turned the gloom and doom of Covid-19 into a massive positive for their staff. An enlightening and educational chat with Jeff, that I hope you will enjoy as much as I did.https://www.allagash.com/Want to help spread the craft beer gospel?Follow me on Instagram, Facebook, or YouTubeRate, Review and Subscribe on Apple Podcasts...click link on phone and scroll to bottomOr Follow/Subscribe on you favourite podcast playerCheck out my website
I'm interviewed by Rob Todd of the the Lessons From the Front podcast - by Carry the Load.
With the decade coming to a close, the guys are in a particularly reflective mood. Matty's ready to completely reinvent himself, Noah's standing ground with arms folded, and per usual, the resulting dialogue finds itself in a happy medium. The conversation reflects on the good, bad, and ridiculous that seven months of podcasting has brought the guys, and touches on their hopes and dreams (or lack thereof) for 2020. The pseudo-psychiatric self indulgence wraps up with Noah and Matt sharing their three respective most memorable beer drinking experiences of the past year. Onward and upward.. fingers crossed.
Rob & Todd have lots to be thankful for this week! The fellas fully indulge in a personal episode by quickly hitting lots of sports topics including the Spring Game and then discussing their middle-aged perspective on what they should’ve appreciated more when they were in school. Thanks to all of you that stick with us in the slow season!
Salutations, everybody! This week, Ryan and Alex try the delightful Allagash White by Allagash Brewing Company. Allagash was started in Portland, Maine, in 1995 as a small, one man brewing company by founder Rob Todd. Todd was familiar with the brewing scene, and realized there was a gap that needed to be filled in the craft brewing scene - while there were plenty of German and British style brews, the beer world was missing real craft Belgian style beers. Rob Todd decided he was just the man to fill that gap and began brewing the first batch of Allagash White, releasing it for distribution in 1995. Since then, Allagash Brewing Co. has grown to become the face of Belgian style beers in the US. Allagash White has tastes of coriander and Curacao Orange Peel, along with the traditional spices you’d expect to taste in a Belgian White. We’ll also be calling the very talented makeup artist, Paulie Jutras, who’s worked in film, theater, and was recently a finalist in the NYX Face Awards. He’s currently blowing up on Instagram, having perfected the looks of The Mad Hatter, Ursula from The Little Mermaid, and Scar from the Lion King, just to name a few. This week on FDB - we discover some interesting craft beer names, learn of the slowest car chase to ever grace the news, discuss secondary means of relaxation, and more! Now please kick back, and enjoy another sit down with Friends Drink Beer. To support Allagash Brewing Company, and to find out more about their other beers, visit: www.allagash.com To learn about Paulie Jutras and his amazing works of makeup artistry, you can follow him on Instagram @paulie_sfx BEER EVENT OF THE WEEK EVENT: Septemberfest WHERE: Avery Park in Corvallis, Oregon WHEN: Saturday, September 15, 2018 WHAT: Being hosted at at Avery Park is the 11th annual Septembeerfest. GBH founder—and one of the co-hosts of this podcast—Michael Kiser has previously described some episodes of this podcast as being "bucket-list" interviews. Folks like Brooklyn Brewery’s Garrett Oliver and Allagash’s Rob Todd, for example: folks who’ve played huge roles in shaping the industry as we know it and still continue to do so. Now, it’s my turn. Today, I sit down for a conversation with Yvan de Baets, head brewer and co-founder of Brasserie de la Senne in Brussels, Belgium. You’re more than likely already familiar with the beers that de la Senne produces. Despite only being in existence since 2003, its beers, such as the dry and bitter Taras Boulba and the balanced, rounded Zinnebir, could easily be described as timeless and iconic. These aren’t words to be thrown around lightly, but try asking a brewer what his or her favorite beer is and more often than not, it’ll be one of them. It’s no surprise, either, as we’ll learn from de Baets later in this episode that Taras Boulba is a beer made for brewers. De Baets was in town for a string of events centered around a new specialty Belgian beer festival here in London called Ales Tales. The night before we met for this interview we had hosted an event with him at The Prince in Wood Green, North London and our conversation picks up from the points we discussed that evening. This includes the origins of de la Senne and how their first beer was brewed in a Brussels squat, to just how intrinsic the Belgian capital is to everything this brewery does. Yvan pulls no punches when discussing what he calls "fake brewers," or what most of us know as contract, or so-called "gypsy brewers." He even goes as far as to call some of them a disease within the industry. He even weighs in on the use of Belgian beer terminology, such as Lambic and Gueuze, around the world—including the recent fracas between Jester King and HORAL .
few days before the attacks on the World Trade Center, three men kicked down the front door of Rob Todd’s Perry Heights townhouse, punched him to the ground, dragged him outside, and took turns kicking and stomping him in the head. They robbed and left him for dead. Rob survived. He survived the attack. He survived the emotional and physical injuries. He survived the painful reconstructive surgeries. He survived the rehab. He survived teaching himself to walk, again. He survived being failed by the local justice system that let his assailants go free. He adjusted to the changes. And in the 14 years since, not a single day has slipped by without a reminder of the toll surviving can take on a person. We talk about this over coffee. Rob is one of the most successful attorneys in town. He helps disabled people get Social Security and Veteran benefits. As we chatted, I kept trying to connect dots between his experiences and that of his clients. My suggestions that being better at his job than most could be attributed to his survival seemed more distracting, to him, than anything. Rob spends every single day fighting intransigent government bureaucracies for people broken and on the brink of disaster. He just sees it as his way to help people. He could brag. He doesn’t. He could use his story as a platform for himself. He doesn’t. He could extol his survival as something exceptional. He doesn’t. There aren’t huge payouts in the kind of law he practices. So, when I asked him why he invested in something as risky as a restaurant, his flat lawyerly response seemed to belie a larger significance of what it means to be a survivor. He said restaurants make people happy. Life is fragile. Life is short. You need to do your best, to make the best of it, while you can. — Rob Todd Pour a cup of coffee and listen to our conversation.
