While Garrett Oliver of Brooklyn Brewery (https://brooklynbrewery.com) and Vinnie Cilurzo of Russian River (https://www.russianriverbrewing.com) need little introduction, the grain they've grown fond of brewing with—an African millet grain named fonio—may be unfamiliar to many brewers. In this episode, the two legends of brewing discuss the background of the grain and how and why they've used it in a series of new beers, produced for the Brewing for Impact (https://brooklynbrewery.com/news/brewing-for-impact-russian-river/) project. Along the way, Oliver and Cilurzo touch on: the limiting impact of our western industrialized food system the history and nature of fonio grain farming and climate benefits of fonio using fonio as a brewing component at various percentages fonio's unusual amino acid-like bitterness the impact on FAN in finished beer and its implications for potential stability and longevity a basic step mash regimen for Belgian pale with fonio the sauvignon blanc-like flavors that fonio can produce nearly clear beer made from 100% fonio And more. Everyone thought Garrett was crazy to leave his high-rise office job to join a brewery in the attic of a building in 1989. Ever since Garrett had learned about all the craft styles that existed while traveling in Europe, he couldn't help but think about ways to bring that variety and those styles of beer back to the US. Fast forward to today and Garrett has been the Brewmaster at Brooklyn Brewing for over 30 years. Something he couldn't help but notice in the industry is the lack of diversity. Being one of the only black brewers in the early days has instilled in him the desire to re-diversify brewing through his work with the Michael James Jackson Foundation. They are an organization that funds brewing education scholarships to Black, Indigenous, and People of Color. Athletic Brewing has been proudly supporting the Michael James Jackson Foundation since 2022 through the sale of Soul Sour, a fierce and fruit-forward sour brew crafted annually in honor of Black History Month. 100% of Soul Sour's profits will be donated to organizations breaking down barriers in brewing, including Sacred Heart University and the Michael James Jackson Foundation for Brewing and Distilling, which are crafting opportunities for BIPOC brewers through scholarships, education, and career advancement. To try Soul Sour and learn more about Athletic Brewing's award-winning non-alcoholic craft beer, visit AthleticBrewing.com and follow us at @AthleticBrewing.

In this episode of Beer Travelers, we visit Brooklyn, New York, with its frenetic pace to its quiet neighborhood bars, and all the haze, lager, and sour beers you could ever want. Brooklyn was once one of the world's great brewing centers. Home to nearly 50 breweries in 1900, the borough brewed a ton of beer under brands names like Schaefer, Rheingold, and many others lost to history. But that came to an end by the mid-1970s and the borough's mashtuns went silent for the next 20 years. That was until 1987 when Steve Hindy Tom Potter decided to open up their own brewery in a warehouse district in Williamsburg. Named after the borough it inhabited, Brooklyn Brewery would go on to spread the word of craft beer around the globe and become one of the early pioneers of the resurgent modern American beer scene. It took a while for brewing to catch on again in Brooklyn but slowly others opened, including Kelso and Sixpoint. And then there was the third wave of craft brewers, with names such as Other Half, Threes, and Finback. Today, Brooklyn's beer scene is top notch and the borough's bars and breweries make for an easy and exciting night out. After falling in love with it after my first visit, I trek down to Brooklyn a couple times a year including in December for an annual holiday themed pub and brewery crawl. It remains a favorite place to visit and drink and I look forward to exploring it with two great local experts.Courtney Iseman is a freelance writer who has written engaging pieces for Vinepair, Craft Beer and Brewing, as well as her own newsletter, Hugging the Bar. She's a compelling voice in beer and has written extensively about everything from diversity and inclusion to her favorite local Brooklyn pubs, including about the bar owned by our second guest.Chris Maestro is a DJ, avid record collector, educator, and also the co-owner with his wife of Bierwax, a beer bar with outposts in both Brooklyn and Queens. The Prospect Heights based bar focuses on great beer and music, played analog style from one of Chris's thousands of vinyl records that line the back of the bar. He was in the beer business before opening his own shop and is a Brooklyn native. It's a big borough and there's a lot of ground to cover in this episode. So let's get started with our tour of Brooklyn, New York, with writer Courtney Iseman and publican Chris Maestro. This Episode is Sponsored by:Pub Culture BeercationsStop living vicariously through other people's social media posts and get out and make some memories of your own! With the 2022 iteration of The Brewers Congress almost among us, it was only right we revisitedthe closing remarks from last year's event, delivered by Garrett Oliver, the brewmaster at BrooklynBrewery. At the end of the 2021 Brewers Congress, we learned that in beer, and the wider world, whatpeople love is for you to have the respect to show them what you love. And in doing so, they havean opportunity to walk through a little door and potentially find something they really enjoy. But ifyou don't give people the chance, then they can't respect you.Garrett Oliver, as well all know, has hosted countless tastings. And he has seen that people cansurprise you. With their knowledge, their taste, with their enthusiasm. In London, he told us that you should never assume that you know more than the person sitting infront of you. That we all should be more inclusive, and to have the courage to put ourselves in frontof people who don't look like us and maybe haven't heard about our beer. And also, he said that if you want to have a really good time, get everybody in the room. Not justthe people you know, but everybody because, put simply, everybody loves beer. Photo: Nic Crilly-Hargrave

In a testament to how quickly the beer industry can change, it's hard to imagine even just a few years ago that a panel like this would be taking place. But as the beer industry matures, there is a tilt towards health and wellness, the rise of non-alcoholic beer in the craft space can not be ignored. It shouldn't be ignored. What you are about to hear was held in a seminar room at the 2022 Craft Brewers Conference in Minneapolis. This is an expert panel that is pushing the boundaries of non-alcoholic beer in taste, innovation, and positive public perception. So you'll hear from: · Garrett Oliver the brewmaster of The Brooklyn Brewery, the author of The Brewmaster's Table, and the Editor-in-Chief of The Oxford Companion to Beer. · Bill Shufelt the co-founder and CEO of Athletic Brewing Co. And · Keith Villa Brewmaster and Co-Founder at Ceria Beverages Company This audio was captured by Erik Eidem who had a microphone and camera set up in the seminar room. So while there aren't individual mics, it will hopefully give you the sensation that you were in the room with everyone else. A poorly designed law that works and an expertly designed drink that sucks. When Prohibition was repealed in 1933 American drinkers had a lot of catching up to do. Tastes had changed and big brewers took note, cutting costs and striking ingredients until Americans were left with a low ABV bubbly bread soup that tasted vaguely like something they half-remembered. Flash forward to today and Lite Beer is one of the most well-designed products on the planet, while Americans are still untangling an ungainly patchwork of laws leftover from the bad old prohibition days. It begs the question: what does it mean to make something well? Special guests this week are Garret Oliver of Brooklyn Brewing Co., Brandon Skall of DC Brau and Garrett Peck, author of “The Prohibition Hangover.”Please SUBSCRIBE and RATE the show if you can. This, he explains, led to the launch of The Michael James Jackson Foundation for Brewing & Distilling. Oliver tells us how 2020 events sparked a realization that being Black and “seen” isn’t as good as actively bringing others into the fold. He sees formal education as the key to longterm careers for BIPOC in beer and spirits. Hosted by Cat Wolinski. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Its no joke! 2 years ago I made a killer wrapped pumpkin spice brie that could have easily been turned into amazing grilled cheese sandwiches Today we are not talking about PSL's aka Pumpkin spice lattes or some other modern pumpkinized foodity but rather one that dates back to 1771 . Yes, 17 freakin 71. In doing research for this episode I got my hands on the https://www.amazon.com/dp/0195367138/ref=as_sl_pc_tf_til?tag=iipodcast-20&linkCode=w00&linkId=54504bf91829ddf51871e4b54f1d9c6e&creativeASIN=0195367138 (oxford companion to beer written by Garrett Oliver) - who I consider one of the most famous brew masters alive today This book is an encyclopedia for beer It literally goes from A to Z everything beer As I clicked through the pages and got to the letter P and to my surprise there was actually a section under pumpkin beer It seems that pumpkin ale is the first original American beer style dating back to the 18th century As we know, beer is traditionally made by soaking barely and hops in water then allowing the sugars from the barely to ferment creating beer Because of grain shortages at that time the colonists were looking for other sources of sugars to ferment into alcohol Well...you can guess what happened next! Get the pumpkins! Screamed the colonists Smash um! Squeeze um! Hop um! This actually happened... https://www.amazon.com/dp/0195367138/ref=as_sl_pc_tf_til?tag=iipodcast-20&linkCode=w00&linkId=54504bf91829ddf51871e4b54f1d9c6e&creativeASIN=0195367138 (Oliver) quotes a recipe: The recipe is entitled Receipe for pompion ale “Let the pompion be beaten in a trough and pressed as apples. The expressed juice is to be boiled in a copper a considerable time and carefully skimmed that there may be no remains of the fibrous part of the pulp. After that intention is answered let the liquor be hopped cooled fermented as malt beer. “ This recipe was published by the American philosophical society in Feb 1771 This recipe is almost like a pumpkin cider. If you break it down to its most basic elements Its essentially pumpkin juice that is hopped and fermented Not exactly sure when our modern version of pumpkin beer surfaced. Wikipedia says that The first commercially brewed pumpkin ale came from https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buffalo_Bill%27s_Brewery (Buffalo Bill's Brewery) in Hayward, California, in the 1980s. This was part of the PSL- pumkin spice latte craze where everything started to become pumpkin spice more then actual pumpkin per

This week on Beer Sessions Radio, Jimmy welcomes Pete Brown from London to talk about his newest book, Craft: An Argument. As some breweries and guilds lean into descriptors like “independent breweries,” “good beer,” or “micro-breweries,” Pete makes the case for why craft still has meaning. His book was written in quarantine and draws on a wide range of resources from Garrett Oliver to Michael Jackson and even Descartes. Toronto-based beer writer, Stephen Beaumont joins the conversation as well, along with B.R. Rolya of Shelton Brothers. Together they talk about the meaning of craft beer to breweries internationally, discuss draft versus cans, and talk about some of the biggest beer sales that have called the meaning of craft into question. Brewing education is expensive, and it’s often difficult for entrepreneurs who are Black, indigenous and people of color to secure capital. These hurdles often keep women and people of color out of beer, an industry that’s long been dominated by white men. This week’s panelists are working to provide scholarships, hands-on experience or business loans to people who want to enter the beer industry. Brooklyn Brewery brewmaster Garrett Oliver, Tired Hands co-owner Julie Foster and brewer Christina Alleva, Boston Beer director of partnerships Jennifer Glanville and Chula Vista Brewery founder and owner Tim Parker discuss how their organizations and companies are working to break down barriers to entry in the beer industry for underrepresented groups.
CC sat down with Garrett Oliver from Brooklyn Brewery and Olle Andersson form O/O Brewing and talked about IPA in front of a live audience at HOBO Hotel. Don't miss out on all the interesting opinions and insights from these truly fascinating superstars of the beer world. Enjoy!

Dan Saladino meets the brewers transforming the flavours and styles of the British craft beer scene. From experiments with seaweed to efforts to find lost Victorian recipes, it's a diverse and fast moving world, so where are the new ideas for beer coming from and which brewers are leading the way?The award winning beer writer Pete Brown has described 2014 as the year in which craft beer has gone mainstream. A term first used to describe the renaissance of American brewing in the 1980's "craft" refers to smaller scale breweries, producing in small batches and often working with beer styles packed with flavour. In the last ten years the overall beer market has crashed by 25 per cent. Although cask ale is holding its own, the beer of this new wave of "craft brewers" is growing at around 70 per cent, year on year. The Food Programme finds out who is behind this trend and what kind of beers they're producing.Dan hears from Brewdog in Scotland, Thornbridge in Derbyshire, Wild Beer Co in Somerset as well as The Kernel and Meantime breweries in London to hear why sour beers, German styles and Saisons are the order of the day.Beer archivist Ron Pattinson talks about his efforts to revive some of Britain's lost beer recipes and Garrett Oliver, editor of The Oxford Companion to Beer, explains why experiments in yeast are giving us new beers flavours. From Copenhagen the man behind the Mikkeller brewery describes why he never brews the same beer twice and why seaweed, popcorn and vanilla are on his list of ingredients.Produced and presented by Dan Saladino.
From barrel ageing beer to sourcing intensely bitter hops, Dan Saladino reports on the latest trends in American brewing that are starting to influence British beer styles. The US "craft beer" scene started to take shape 30 years ago. Prohibition in the 1920s and post-war industrialisation brought an end to one of the world's most diverse brewing cultures. In 1979 President Jimmy Carter made home brewing legal again, and soon after, a network of adventurous brewers started to emerge. Known as craft brewers, they operate on a small scale and use traditional brewing techniques but also place great emphasis on experimentation and innovation.American brewer and editor of The Oxford Companion to Beer, Garrett Oliver puts their quest for new flavours down to the US losing its own brewing culture and so being free to explore all others. Now a young generation of brewers in the UK are looking at these new US styles and discovering techniques like barrel aging as well embarking on experiments with new, intensely flavoured, hop varieties.
