Y2K! Dumb, satisfying fun or an apocalyptic mess? Kyle Mooney's directorial debut is paired with an out-of-nowhere treat: Brigsby Bear (2017). This Mooney-starring film turns out to be the best surprise of the week. Comedian Blake Trevino stops in to chop it up, and we drink two great beers from Sierra Nevada and Jester King.
It's the UK vs US in a saison double header. Don't get to do back-to-back saisons very often. This is a real surprise. The Kernel is one of the UK's best producer of traditional style beers. They do a lot of traditional ipas, porters, table beers, saisons and more. Foeder Beer Mosaic is a farmhouse ale made with mosiac hops fermented in red wine barrels. At only 5.4% ABV, it's a light refreshing farmhouse ale that's light on the funk. Jester King is Texas premiere wild ale makers. Super Ultramega Hyperforce is a 4.5% ABV farmhouse ale made with ginger, salt, tarragon and refermented with cataloupe. It's not as weird as it sounds. #beer #craftbeer #drinks #farmhouseale #saison

When choosing guests for The Crafty Pint Podcast, we favour people we know have good stories to tell (which, in fairness, doesn't discount many people working in beer) and a particular area of knowledge, expertise or insight to share with listeners and viewers. In the case of Amanda Baker – Bakes to most – they were high on our priority list but leapt to the top when Will spotted something odd going on with the Instagram account Lost Palms, the Gold Coast brewery at which they work. Everything the brewery had posted in seven years disappeared overnight to be replaced by a series of stark, mysterious posts. Attention captured, Will suggested we get Bakes on straight away, which technically meant they were coming on for a discussion around social media, marketing and branding. But, as anyone who knows Bakes knows, we were never going to pin them down to something as straightforward as that. So, settle in for a chat that, yes, looks at the new approach Lost Palms are taking and what sparked the change, but also examines branding more widely – not least as they're involved in the launch of new energy drink SAYG. A year on from Bakes' appearance in one of our most widely read and discussed articles of 2023, Chronically Crafty, which explored working in beer with a chronic medical condition, we reflect on the impact that had and how to keep those discussions going. Meanwhile, Bakes' recent trip to North America, where they stayed with meme legend, Wort Wrangler, brewed collabs with Seek Beer Co and Dominion City, forced themselves onto the Jester King workforce, and met up with Ren Navarro, the founder of Beer Diversity (now B.Diversity), sparks a conversation about community and diversity in beer. Essentially, it's a few episodes rolled into one, with a preamble in which we discuss the phenomenal number of Oktoberfests in Australia this year, New South Wales' first off-grid brewery, Mick Wüst's deep dive into life in a sensory lab, and opening registrations for Pint of Origin 2025. Dave, Joe and Harold remember 70s directing legend William Friedkin by diving in to two of his early films, Sorcerer and Cruising. Both were box office and critical bombs that have grown in esteem through the decades. What are our verdicts? All while enjoying two beers from Jester King and Nebraska Brewing Company.
Spontaneous fermentation may be the most unique brewing technique in the world and the beers they produce are just as interesting, with many flavors not seen outside these styles. But “spontaneous” doesn't really tell you anything about what goes into making lambic, gueuze and American made versions from insane boiling hours to months and years waiting to see if the beer is actually any good to sell. Today we talk to two producers: one a classic lambic house from the Senne River Valley and the brewery that defined American sour brewing.Werner Van Obberghen is one of the owners of Brouwerij 3 Fonteinen. In 2013, Armand Debelder and Michaël Blancquaert called upon Werner to help shaping the futureof 3 Fonteinen. With his experience in strategy and with masters in finance and business economics,he is now responsible with Michaël for managing 3 Fonteinen and its team of twenty. Michaël takescare of the creative & operational side (brewing, blending, bottling, labelling) while Werner managesthe business side (administration, sales, marketing, tasting room).Michaël and Werner continue the life-long craftmanship of Armand and – inspired by his values andwishes – took 3 Fonteinen a step further. Longer barrel ageing, a local cereal and hop collective withfarmers, a network of families with Schaarbeekse sour cherries, a direct relation with some of themost progressive biodynamic wine makers are just a few examples.Jeffrey Stuffings grew up on the gulf coast of Florida. He studied government at Notre Dame and law at Boston College. While in law school, he discovered homebrewing and craft beer. He and his wife Amber moved to Texas 2007. Shortly thereafter, Jeff began working on starting Jester King with Amber (co-founder) and brother Michael Steffing (co-founder). Today, Jeffrey focuses on beer making and Jester King's operations.
Averie Swanson of Keeping Together is on the show this week in a conversation recorded last month at Funk Fest in Nashville, TN. We're talking about saison, building a new brewery, and the creative process.Swanson is one of the most talented and thoughtful brewers in the U.S. today and her career path is well known. Going from a volunteer at Jester King in Austin to its head brewer in just four years before leaving several years ago to start a new venture called Keeping Together. Originally operating out of Chicago it was focused on mixed culture, rustic, Belgian-inspired beers. Now, she and her partner Pat Fahey have purchased a property in New Mexico and plans to open a brewery and tasting room. Over the last year she has been thinking about new iterations of her beer, specialty ingredients, becoming part of a new community, and the experiences that come with new beginnings and space. The Craft Brewers Conference is an annual event that brings brewers from around the world into a selected city for a few days of education, equipment buying, and camaraderie. Brewers have also been using the occasion to get together in advance to create and then release collaboration beers. One of the most ambitious – at least from what I've experienced in recent years – will be released on May 1 by Embrace the Funk, the wild and wooded side of Yazoo Brewing. Brandon Jones, the brewer behind ETF called his friends – Vinnie Cilurzo of Russian River, Jason Perkins of Allagash, Jeffrey Stuffings of Jester King and Khristopher Johnson of Green Bench Brewing and they all agreed to lend their time, talent, and inspiration to the beer. Then Jones got Jeff Mello of Bootleg Biology involved on the yeast side and Matt Albrecht of River Drive Cooperage to sort out the wood. Everyone – minus Jason Perkins of Allagash – was able to jump into the zoom studios earlier this month to talk about the beer, how it all came together, and the spirt of collaboration among brewers and in the beer industry. Jeffrey Stuffings, co-founder of Jester King, discusses a bill in the Texas Senate that would fine businesses $10,000 for hosting “sexually oriented performances” – which includes drag events, if people under age 18 are present or on public property – and shares why the Austin, Texas-based brewery is encouraging its followers to oppose it. Although the proposed law does not apply to establishments that are 21+, many breweries and restaurants that host drag shows are family-friendly and would like to stay that way. Stuffings explains how Jester King has built an inclusive space and why he sees the legislation as an example of “fear of the other.” Dave Infante, editor of independent drinks newsletter Fingers, joins the conversation to share why brewery owners hosting similar events need to be prepared for potential backlash in this overheated political environment.

On the the third episode of the Brewer to Brewer Podcast Jeffrey Stuffings of Jester King slides into the host seat and welcomes Khristopher Johnson of Green Bench Brewing. The two start off by talking about the evolution of the brewing scene in southwest Florida over the last decade before taking a trip down memory lane, highlighting beers that shaped their careers. It usually does not take too long for brewers gathered together to start talking about lagers and this episode is no exception, as Stuffings picks Johnson's brain a bit on Postcard Pils, the process and the customers experience. From there they transition into farmhouse ales. Work and life balance has emerged as an important topic on this show and Johnson shares his experiences and guide rails on how to be present as both while setting proper boundaries. And before signing off the duo goes full ESPN and offers their outlook for the upcoming NBA season. This Episode is Sponsored by:Firsd TeaFirsd Tea is a proud sponsor of the Brewer to Brewer podcast. A couple years ago Matt got really into tracking his time for an entire year. Virtually every minute, there was an app running in the background as he was cataloging how he was spending his hours- all in an attempt to better utilize his time. And while 99% of folks will think that's completely insane, they'll likely admit that there might be some serious benefits to managing their time more efficiently. Similarly, we're here to argue that negotiating is something that can benefit you regardless of what stage of life you're in- whether you're a student, a stay-at-home parent, or a CEO. Everyone loves a good comeback story- exceeept when it's the villain who is making the comeback! That's basically how we feel about the mullet. We can all pretty much agree that mullets are the most villainous hairstyle. It had its heyday back in the 80s and is now back in full-business-in-the-front-party-in-the-back-force. Similarly, that's how we feel about consumer debt. Credit card debt levels drastically dropped with the onset of Covid lockdowns and for a minute we thought this might be the start of a personal finance reawakening! But unfortunately that was the exception rather than the norm. In February, American consumers increased their borrowing by a record $42 billion as credit card usage was up 20% in Q1 alone according to the major credit card companies. This is bad news of course, but there are strategic ways to use debt to your advantage. The types of debt you sign up for, what you're spending it on, your debt to income ratio, and resisting the ‘immediacy premium' are all elements of debt that we discuss today. COVID concerns have begun rising along with case numbers in several parts of the U.S., but local community levels remain in Low range at present. Half of the Austin City Council will not face an unexpected re-election campaign this year after all, as a judge has ruled that redistricting did not disenfranchise voters. Monthly real estate numbers show a new record median home price for Austin: $640,000. As delays return, a new recommendation for ABIA travelers checking bags: arrive at least two and a half hours ahead of your departure time. Teachers working for Lockhart, Hutto, Round Rock, Eanes, Lake Travis, and Hays ISD's will all get raises this year, ranging from 3 to 8% - Austin ISD is still considering what to do. As the national baby formula shortage continues, Mother's Milk Bank in Austin is providing pasteurized milk from mothers who have donated. Dog owners: hot weather early in the year is contributing to a possible high-risk season for dangerous algae in Austin's waterways. An art history professor at UT has helped an archaeological team to identify the earliest-known record of the Mayan calendar system. Austin has dropped out of the top 10 of U.S. News and World Report's "Best Places To Live" - we're now #13. Nevertheless, another new study finds that Austin remains one of the top cities that Americans are moving to - but we've been passed up there too, by Dallas, San Antonio and national #1 Houston. The Paramount Theater's Summer Classic Film Series is set to start its 48th run next week. And, the World Beer Cup craft beer awards were held recently in Nashville, and local winners included Lazarus, Meanwhile, Jester King, and Circle Brewing.

Whether you're a fan of karaoke or not, it's probably not a huge deal for you to stand up in front of some friends and belt out a favorite song of yours from highschool- maybe some Hootie & the Blowfish or a Kelly Clarkson hit. You might be a little nervous but you're not going to give it too much thought. But now imagine having to sing that song in a stadium full of people. Things are going to be a bit different aren't they?! You're likely going to be much more nervous because the stakes are a lot higher! Well similarly, the stakes are higher than ever when it comes to finding the right housing for you. Prices have gone through the roof whether you're renting or looking to buy. The typical American homeowner saw a gain of $50,000 of home equity in 2021- that's insane! With the stakes so high, we're going to weigh in with our thoughts about how you should proceed if you're not sure whether you should keep renting or take the plunge into homeownership. We're still in New Zealand, but this time we're joined by Denny's better half as she walks us through her experience exploring the beers of New Zealand. What stories did she discover about the breweries (and her thought about their IPAs)? And then Denny hits the fields to discover how hop research is carried out in New Zealand! IN the pub, it's all the news fit to drink to, including Denny's anniversary and ABI's impact on homebrewing. In the library we cover some great recipes from Jester King before talking about a new IPA style and why people are confusing it for something Belgian, a little science tease and of course a quick tip and Denny's new cooking obsession.
