Just days before Christmas, Beyoncé's NFL 2024 Christmas Day Halftime Show faced a major issue: the stadium floor was too slippery for the horses planned for her performance. The solution came from Cavallo Hoof Boots, a small family business in Roberts Creek, B.C. After a frantic request from Hollywood-based Horses for Productions, Cavallo's team rushed to size and ship their all-terrain hoof protection boots to Houston. Despite holiday shipping challenges, the boots arrived just in time, fitting all seven horses perfectly—an unusual feat. Incredible music in the first hour by the likes of Tamikrest and Bela Fleck & Toumani Diabate. Lots of strings throughout. Many of them played by the Kronos Quartet. Today’s theme is Quartets. Being the fourth. I recorded the show on the beach at Roberts Creek on Canada Day.
This show started in Kolkatta, moved to Kenya, then a brief RIP to Mory Kante, some Afro-Canadian fusion, a shout-out to Rokia Traore's child custody woes, and moved on through West Africa to Colombia, Wales, Sweden, France, The Balkans, Mississippi, and up to the safe side of the 49th with a feature on the new CD by The Burying Ground (country blues from Roberts Creek), and all sorts of Canadiana before Tim Readman gave us an exclusive on a new song about Going On Zoom. Ended with a flourish of Celtic music from BC's Kierah, and two great Irish bands - The Pogues and Four Men & A Dog. Phew! 35 years on CiTR!!! The odd technological flaw apart, this was a FUN show. Enjoy the podcast!!

The show starts out this week with something we don't usually do here on the HSS. Riddims! Fantan Mojah, Michael Rose, 3gga & Emiliano all have their take on the Prisonbreak Riddim. We take it back a bit with some vintage roots reggae from The Prophets, featuring Vivian Jackson or perhaps better known as Yabby You. The show comes closer to the present with the slick production and dubby vibes of ex Roberts Creek native Bluetech and his track Dread Inna Babylon. Montreal and recent Berlin ex-pat Deadbeat brings his take on dub you can move it to, then Fever Ray and their excellent Tora Vinter Remix of Triangle Walks. Toronto's darlings Austra bring a glitched remix of Spellwork and Portland Oregon's Emancipator takes the show down a notch with a couple remixes including a nice blend of Sigur Ros and Mobb Deep. We sign off with the Minneapolis Minnesota hip-hop collective Doomtree bringing the emotion and a Little Mercy. Tracklist: Fantan Mojah – Hot Michael Rose – Fight I Down 3gga & Emiliano – Too Far The Prophets – Warn The Nation Bluetech – Dread Inna Babylon Deadbeat – Abu Ghraib (Reconfiguration) Fever Ray – Triangle Walks (Tora Vinter Remix) Austra – Spellwork (MNDR Nighttime Remix) Emancipator – First Snow (Ooah Remix) Emancipator – Shook (Sigur Ros X Mobb Deep) Doomtree – Little Mercy
