We reframe the “egg crisis” (high prices and low supply of commercial hen's eggs in a bird flu outbreak) as a crisis of mass farming of animals, proposing sustainable alternative food solutions that can replace eggs and reduce the spread of zoonotic diseases, pollution, and the killing and harm of millions of wild and domesticated animals. Jennifer and Carrie discuss this in the context of the bird flu outbreak, as avian influenza is spreading and mutating in a variety of animal species (including cows used for dairy and human farm workers) – this infectious pathogen is an increasingly alarming issue for wild animals, farmed animals, and human health. The existence of factory farms keeps viruses circulating, making everyone less safe. We discuss how institutions can help us shift toward safer more humane, plant-based food systems. We end by discussing alternatives to eggs in your baking and cooking. Dr. Jennifer Molidor, Sr. Food Campaigner at the Center for Biological Diversity is host Carrie Freeman's guest on this 42-minute podcast, recorded in late March 2025. Jennifer mentioned these resources: Take Extinction Off Your Plate https://takeextinctionoffyourplate.com/ Wildlife-Friendly School Food Programs https://takeextinctionoffyourplate.com/school-food-1 One of Carrie's go-to sites for animal-free recipes, especially baking, is Loving it Vegan https://lovingitvegan.com/ If you want to see where America's animal products come from (and who they come from), check out this factory farming website from Farm Sanctuary (an animal rescue organization) that helps us look these individuals in the eyes with compassion and justice: https://www.farmsanctuary.org/issue/factory-farming/ "In Tune to Nature" is a weekly radio show airing Wednesdays at 6pm Eastern Time on 89.3FM-Atlanta radio and streaming worldwide on wrfg.org (Radio Free Georgia, a nonprofit indie station) hosted by me, Carrie Freeman, or Melody Paris. To have a greener holiday season (and beyond) and avoid buying a bunch of cluttering stuff your friends and family don't need (and probably don't want), this annual holiday show focuses not on eco-friendly products/items but more on eco-friendly experiences and services in order to avoid cluttering up our lives (and planet) with more items that land in our homes permanently and ultimately weigh us and our descendants down (or just end up in a landfill down the line). So my emphasis here is on sharing gift-giving ideas for vegan-friendly foods/restaurants or experiences (airbnbs/cabins, park passes, professional photography sessions and massages, etc. excluding animal entertainment venues) or lending a helping hand (dog-sitting, babysitting/tutoring, lawncare and home vegetable gardening, home organization), or media subscriptions (to streaming services like Ecoflix, PBS Passport, the Guardian, Vox, NYT, AJC, Sentient Media, Inside Climate News, Insight Timer app), or savings/investing ideas, and giving your holiday money to communities and small businesses in distress. Basically, don't head to the mall or Amazon.com and get sucked into traditional consumerism. Plan ahead and be thoughtful and you'll probably save money in the process. I forgot to mention this gift idea on the show; you can also sponsor/"adopt" rescued animals or endangered species from nonprofit sanctuaries and wildlife organizations to give funds to those advocacy groups and educate kids about what we owe to these beautiful animal kin -- for example, Farm Sanctuary's Adopt a Turkey program https://www.farmsanctuary.org/adopt-a-turkey The radio show is focused more on gifting for the adults in our lives, as I know that kids often do need books, toys, and clothes as they grow (and you can buy used, eco-friendly, and vegan products there). "In Tune to Nature" is a weekly radio show airing Wednesdays at 6:30pm Eastern Time on 89.3FM-Atlanta radio and streaming worldwide on wrfg.org (Radio Free Georgia, a nonprofit indie station). Hosted by Carrie Freeman or Melody Paris. This month's episode of The Informed Animal Ally discusses challenges, opportunities, and successes in farm sanctuary work. Featuring The Alice Sanctuary, The Happy Herd Farm Sanctuary, and Kitchensink Rescue Farm & Sanctuary.
Wayne Hsiung and Justin Marceau are joining us on this episode to talk about the criminal prosecution of Tracy Murphy, founder and director of Asha's Farm Sanctuary in Newfane, New York, for supposedly stealing two cows who wandered onto her property seeking, you guessed it, sanctuary. You have probably heard of this case, but maybe, like me, you don't know much…
Asha Farm Sanctuary founder Tracy Murphy speaks to UnchainedTV about her ordeal and persecution. Murphy was a New York business executive who went vegan due to her love of animals. A decade ago, she moved to a rural area north of Buffalo to start her own sanctuary, called Asha's Farm Sanctuary. Things were going wonderfully until 2 cows wandered onto her sanctuary property in the summer of 2022. Murphy took them in and fed them. Then, all hell broke loose. She was ultimately arrested, shackled, charged with a felony and gagged from doing interviews. And, she was targeted by protests and threats as, she says, the surrounding community turned against her. Now, her charge reduced to a misdemeanor, she tells her story to UnchainedTV's Jane Velez-Mitchell and pleads for help to keep her sanctuary going and get through this persecution and prosecution. To help her sanctuary, donate to: https://www.ashasfarmsanctuary.org/donate-only.html

Unique Baseball Plays, Unlikely Partners This is not what you think.. I am showing unique baseball plays because I really do appreciate the athletic prowess, the humor and camaraderie of fans and the teams.. and sometimes the utmost impossible plays of the teams in the outfield. This time it's about unusual alliances in sportsmanlike conduct: Such as SAVANNAH BANANAS https://youtube.com/shorts/IuGJVN2aFrY?si=W43QQVxwtZzur2gP And this video is of one the fans, outfielders, just good stuff https://youtube.com/shorts/_eW0ShNZWfg?si=YId_HGsu0_Vbs7-w As to Unlikely Partners… FARM SANCTUARY - The founder of FARM SANCTUARY, Gene Bauer, found Hilda, a sheep, discarded on a pile of dead animals at a Pennsylvania stockyard. Hilda appeared lifeless. She was so weak that she could barely lift her head to see who had come to her rescue. I feature Farm Sanctuary rather than my usual ROMANCE segue from baseball because this segment is a story about an unusual non- profit that rescues FARM ANIMALS from certain cruelty and gruesome deaths..I know the world will never stop eating processed animals.. however… if this nonprofit can enlighten a few people about the farm animals being rescued from a cruel life, perhaps you'll consider donating to FARM SANTUARY. There is no need for farm animals to experience a horrifying death or live their daily existence under inhumane conditions. Farm Sanctuary | We Envision a World Where Sanctuary Replaces Exploitation https://www.farmsanctuary.org/ The FARM SANCTUARY IS GOOD STUFF..My idea is to help people become AWARE that FARM animals experience a new kind of love in this environment. The unlikely partnership between humans and these farm animals is now being shared with others throughtout the U.S.Folks who never gave a thought to how their “protein” came to their plate can become aware that dignity and humane treatment belongs to all of us. Even farm animals. https://linktr.ee/farmsanctuary Kundalini yoga ANGER MANAGEMENT https://youtu.be/ckO8aCA5HQw?feature=shared WINE - congratulations to a ninety nine years of age chatelaine for writing “My Journey with Wine” by May de Lencquesaing. My Journey with Wine tells the exceptional story of a woman whose destiny was to lead her from a life in a chateau to a garrison in the Midwest, from Bordeaux to Beijing, from the wine estates of Médoc to the Cape vineyards of South Africa. May-Eliane de Lencquesaing, now 99, comes from an ancient line of Bordeaux wine-growers and brokers and an Anglo-Spanish family from the Philippines. Having married a career army officer, she led a nomadic life with her children before drawing lots to determine the allocation of her father's legacy and ending up with the vineyard of Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande in Pauillac. She rebuilt the reputation of this estate's wines to rival the best in France, and promoted them across the world to great acclaim. Then, at the age of seventy-eight she moved to South Africa for a new adventure in wine-making, creating the magnificent Glenelly Estate. https://mailchi.mp/glenelly/ros-de-may-14170040?e=3341734e7a Favorite things GUIDANCE: My Minicourse: Fear of Public Speaking: Virtual, PRIVATE Class, One Lesson takes you from Ordinary to EXTRAORDINARY https://bit.ly/3TXbx5L Valerie@allinourminds.com @valeriehail56 merci
Help celebrate Gene Baur's birthday! The President of Farm Sanctuary is turning…. well, we'll let him tell you! Gene's been hailed as “the conscience of the food movement” by Time Magazine. When he co-founded Farm Sanctuary way back in 1986, he sold vegan hotdogs out of a Volkswagen van at Grateful Dead concerts to pay for the rescue work. Today, Farm Sanctuary has not only rescued thousands of animals but opened the eyes, minds and hearts of millions of people who've either visited one the sanctuaries in Los Angeles or Watkins Glen, New York, or who've read one of Gene Baur's bestselling books, or who've seen some of Farm Sanctuary's extraordinary rescue videos. UnchainedTV is thrilled to be streaming some of those videos here: https://watch.unchainedtv.com/farm-sanctuary So, please, watch and learn all about Gene's early years in Hollywood, doing McDonald's and KFC commercials before waking up and turning into one of the world's leading animal rights advocates! For more info, to visit Farm Sanctuary or, to get involved, visit: https://www.farmsanctuary.org/
The Lancaster Farm Sanctuary offers abused farm animals a second chance at life. The non-profit was founded in 2017 by Jonina Turzi and Sarah Salluzzo when it became obvious there was a need to save farm animals. “Although in some circumstances farm animals are protected from egregious abuse, there are a lot of loopholes where it's like, if it's common practice in animal agriculture, then there are exceptions. And so, we found that to be wrong in our perspective, morally wrong. And also, disappointing that it's like these animals are protected, but these animals are not. It's okay to do this to a pig, but you can't do this to a cat.” Lancaster Farm Sanctuary's core values are Justice, Integrity, Responsibility, Compassion and Courage. As the sanctuary works to reduce animal suffering, they also educate the public on animal agriculture, social justice issues, and the climate crisis. Gene takes us back to the 1980s, recounting his first rescue mission and the humble beginnings of his sanctuary. He reflects on the profound impact Farm Sanctuary has had since its inception. Additionally, Gene shares insights on effective advocacy strategies to avoid burnout when fighting for animal liberation and he offers valuable tips for how to stay positive even when the world seems so dark. “I call the act a poison pill, because really, what it is, is if it ever gets inserted into the farm bill or if it gets passed on its own, it prevents all of the animal centered organizations, all the environmental organizations, all the family farm and rural community organizations that push back against factory farming. It wipes out all of the progress that they've made.” Aaron Cohen is the senior director of advocacy at Farm Sanctuary. I asked Aaron to come on the show because I wanted to talk about some important things happening in our government right now. Starting with the delayed passage of the Farm Bill. The Farm Bill covers laws that govern food and farming and has a tremendous impact on farming livlihoods, how food is grown, and what kinds of food are grown. A group of Congressional lawmakers are pushing to include the Ending Agricultural Trade Suppression (EATS) Act as part of the 2023 Farm Bill. If passed, the EATS Act would have serious implications for animal welfare and every ounce of progress that the animal protection movement has made against factory farming. It could also have a huge effect on farmer well-being, worker safety, the spread of zoonotic diseases and pollution. It'd be disastrous.

“And it's true that as much as online makes things much more accessible in so many ways, sometimes it's the feeling and seeing that actually really gets people over the line, because they're like, ‘Oh, wow, that feels really… that looks really good. Oh, look at it on me. Oh, you can style it like this as well. And oh, you can go over the shoulder like, yeah…' the touch is really important for consumer goods” – Jessica Kruger Jessica Kruger is the founder of a vegan handbag company called Shaker. They had a rebrand in June, they were originally founded as LUXTRA in 2018. With the rebrand, came new design and new material. Shaker's handbags are made with MIRUM® - the first high-end leather alternative that is 100% plastic-free, which is a HUGE deal. I spent time with Jessica in London and saw Shaker's bags in person. And they are absolutely stunning. Jessica originally started her journey of building cruelty-free businesses in 2014 when she opened ETHOS – one of London's best loved meat-free restaurants - after her mother volunteered at Farm Sanctuary in California. speciesunite.com https://shakerlondon.com/ https://mirum.naturalfiberwelding.com/

Justice Neil Gorsuch in an explanation of the Supreme Court decision to affirm the California law banning the in-state sale of “certain pork products derived from breeding pigs confined in stalls so small they cannot lie down, stand up, or turn around” stated that “while the Constitution addresses many weighty issues, the type of pork chops California merchants may sell is not on that list.” The decision has implications far beyond the cost of pork in California. Kathy Stevens founded the Catskill Animal Sanctuary in 2001 with 80 acres of land that she turned from a virtual trash heap into an idyllic sanctuary where rescued, abused, and forgotten animals can live their final years filled with the love, care, and respect they so richly deserve. In her work and in her exquisitely written books, Kathy describes the essence and personalities of these animals – and today, she shares some of the most poignant stories from those souls she has had the privilege of caring for through the years. Every animal has a rich emotional life and they want to live. Like humans, they have pain and fear, but can also learn to trust with the right interactions. Is there no end in sight to the abuse animals go through? If it's up to Gene Baur there will be more accountability from people and less suffering for the animals. Gene Baur is a prominent figure in the animal rights movement and the co-founder of Farm Sanctuary, a non-profit organization that aims to end animal cruelty and promote veganism. Baur's passion for animal welfare began in the 1980s when he started visiting farms to observe the conditions in which animals were being raised. Horrified by what he saw, he knew that he had to do something to raise awareness about the cruelty and suffering that farm animals face. Baur's first step to raising awareness and money was selling vegan hot dogs outside Grateful Dead concerts in the 80's. This gave him a platform to talk to people about animal welfare and veganism. In 1986, Baur co-founded Farm Sanctuary with the aim of rescuing farm animals and providing them with a safe and loving home. The first sanctuary was in a small barn in upstate New York and was home to just a few animals. However, as the organization grew, so did the number of animals they rescued. Today, Farm Sanctuary has three locations in New York and California and is home to over 1,000 animals. The organization also advocates for animal welfare and promotes veganism through various campaigns and events. Baur is known for his tireless activism and dedication to animal welfare. He has appeared on numerous TV shows and has authored several books on the subject. His work has also been recognized by several organizations, including the Huffington Post, which named him one of the top 20 activists changing the world. Gene Baur is a passionate animal rights activist who has dedicated his life to ending animal cruelty and promoting veganism. Through his work with Farm Sanctuary, he has rescued and provided a home for thousands of animals and has raised awareness about the importance of treating animals with compassion and respect. His legacy will continue to inspire and influence animal welfare advocates for years to come. During this episode of the Health Science Podcast, Dr. Frank Sabatino and Gene dig deep into why the work to raise awareness about animal cruelty is so important. http://www.HealthScience.org/Podcast/022-Gene-Baur
Gene Baur is the co-founder and president of Farm Sanctuary. He is the star of YTP episode 17, which we recorded in 2016 when BJ and I lived on the road. We were staying in Ithaca, New York, and we'd drive to Watkins Glen, drop Clark off at a dog sitter, and then head to Farm Sanctuary, where we volunteered for seven days. It was a profound experience of transformation and hard labor. Gene has been relentless in his advocacy of animals for almost four decades. He has visited hundreds of farms, stockyards, and slaughterhouses, documenting deplorable conditions. Through his investigative and rescue work, he has educated millions about the plight of modern farm animals. His message of compassionate living transcends age, race, or class and hits deep into the essence of who we are and begs the question - if we can live well without causing unnecessary harm, why wouldn't we? From hob-knobbing with Hollywood royalty to debating on national television, countless public addresses, and authoring two books, Gene is showing this world that compassion is a superpower for good and in effect, has inspired many to shift their mindset around animals to friends, not food. We loved this beautiful conversation and hope you do too! Thank you for tuning in. If you are enjoying the show, if it's assisting you with positive change in your life, please take a moment to leave a review on your preferred listening station. And then head over to Patreon and check out the perks of support; we couldn't do this each week without our patrons. In this episode, we discuss: - compassion is a superpower for good - update on Watkins Glen, NY & Acton, CA locations - the profound impact of veganic agriculture - lawns transitioning to gardens - find common ground to educate - only 4% of mammals live free in the wild - we are losing biodiversity - obstacles to moving to a vegan lifestyle - Hilda's story - positive videos to raise awareness and open hearts and minds - animals are social beings - long walks in nature to process - animal advocacy legislation - future of Farm Sanctuary Namaste- Jess
