I'm so delighted to have Michael Rose, the father of our children, back on the podcast. He was a guest on episode 49. Michael is an Aware Parenting instructor, Tai Chi teacher, and RiverKeeper. In this episode, we share about Aware Parenting, and also about The Marion Method for reparenting. Michael includes perspectives from Tai Chi and from counselling adults. Also in this episode, there is more than the usual background noise of birds singing and dogs snoring. I'm sending love to any feelings that you might feel when you hear those noises. (When I experimented with taking those sounds out, all the life energy in our voices also went, so I left them in!) I invite you to experiment with being present with the sounds while you listen to our voices. Michael shares about his experience of being a part of the Mythopoetic Mens Movement in London in the 90s, and how it helped him practice Aware Parenting. We talk about how grief, crying, and love are interconnected, and how our capacity to cry and to grieve deeply affect our capacity to feel and offer love. I share about The Marion Method perspective of the three types of feelings, and why this is particularly important for adults, and how crying as a result of ongoing harsh thoughts-feelings is not actually healing. We talk about the research process of Aware Parenting, and listening to, and trusting, ourselves as well as our babies or children. Michael shares about his most recent experience doing more counselling training, and how that deepened his understanding of presence, and what presence people need from others in order to experience being safe to feel and express their feelings. Michael talks about the experience of how some dads can believe that being with children is tedious and boring, and how those thoughts and experiences can be transformed. We discuss the shift that can happen from listening to our baby or child's feelings being exhausting, to the experience of us increasingly being able to be present, and the experience being fulfilling and energising. We talk about how Aware Parenting helps our children be more present than us, but also how the reparenting journey helps us become more present. Please note, as a content warning, that Michael shares about an experience of a dangerous experience he had with other men, starting at 1 minute and 8 seconds. Michael finishes the episode sharing about his dream and vision for fathers. Inside this Episode with host, Mitch Hampton I seem to never tire of saying that among my many missions on this podcast is to have guests that are quite different than myself. Although Christine and I are both musicians and in the music world, I can't carry a tune to save my life and my truly awful singing voice is one of the main reasons I decided to purely instrumental music in terms of my own performance.  Not only does our guest have one of the best singing voices  in her for any field or genre of music but she also speaks five plus languages and is well versed in a remarkably diverse repertoire of music Indeed her newest release is representative of just the kind of eclecticism I always champion. I always love having guests on my show who have been in the "classical music" world as it is a genre most misunderstood at times by the public and always worthy of continuation and celebration. I sincerely hope you enjoy watching this episode as much as we did recording it. Ms. Moore's Bio : ( Full Bio on her website below) Praised by the Leipziger Volkszeitung for her lush sound and powerful expression, soprano Christine Moore Vassallo is a versatile performer with equal command in opera, recital, and contemporary music.  The Sacramento, California native counts among her many opera roles Mimi in La Boheme, the title role Madama Butterfly, Alice Ford in Falstaff, Micaela in Carmen, the title role in Suor Angelica, Santuzza in Cavalleria Rusticana, Donna Anna in Don Giovanni, Countess in Le Nozze di Figaro, Judith in Bluebeard's Castle, Leonora in Il Trovatore (described as "velvety and luscious" by SongWordSight Magazine), the title roles in Aida and Ariadne auf Naxos with such companies as the Leipzig Opera, Central City Opera, Santa Fe Opera, Chautauqua Institute, Utopia Opera, Create Opera, the Aldeburgh Summer Festival, Sacramento Opera, the Amato Opera and Lyric Artists of New York. She curated and performed in the first ever concert of Arab composers, entitled "Nearer to East: Chamber Music from the Arab World" at the Bruno Walter Auditorium at Lincoln Center, which concert was lauded by the Library as one of the outstanding of the year. Christine speaks five languages and sings in ten, and has given numerous solo recitals featuring works of all genres of repertoire and languages, including in Granada and Madrid with Festival de Cancion Espanola, Trinity Concert Series in New York, the Library at Lincoln Center, Merkin Concert Hall, the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, and the Old Stone House, Brooklyn. She made her UK debut in 2005 at the Paxton Chamber Music Festival in Scotland with Schoenberg's Pierrot Lunaire (praised by the Glasgow Herald) and has performed many new works by living composers, including the premiere at Merkin Hall NYC of Richard Thompson's song cycle The Shadow of Dawn as well as the NYC premiere of his opera The Mask in the Mirror, Andrew Rudin's Masha's Arias, and works by Michael Rose, Kareem Roustom, Halim El-Dabh, Richard Cameron-Wolfe, Steve Gerber and Zaid Jabri with the Brooklyn New Music Collective.  In 2016 she founded the singers collective Lyric Artists of New York, producing operas and concerts in the New York area. In 2023 she made her Weill Hall at Carnegie debut, and is currently collaborating on a project with composer and pianist Patricio Molina set to premiere in 2025 of his songs set to Arab women poets of the Andalus period. EPISODE 28 - “Golden Era Stars in 1970s Disaster Films” - 03/25/2024 Just when many classic films stars thought they were finished in showbiz, a wonderful thing happened — 1970s disaster movies! Producers like IRWIN ALLEN and JENNINGS LANG shepherded in an exciting, over-the-top, new genre that capitalized on our fears. They also smartly cast many classic film actors in these movies, providing familiar faces who added comfort and emotional investment. These films proved not only lucrative for these golden era stars, but kept them in the public eye longer and often revived careers. Listen this week as we talk about our favorite film icons as they are shaken, flipped, torched, and dropped from the sky in the great 70s disaster films. Dialogues In Longevity - A discussion with Dr. Aubrey de Grey & Dr. Michael Rose about the past, present and future of longevity biotechnology Host - Ira S. Pastor Special thanks to longevity advocate Eric Schulke (https://ruliaderic.wordpress.com/) for helping to organize and coordinate the episode - Dr. Aubrey de Grey, Ph.D., is President & Chief Science Officer of the Longevity Escape Velocity (LEV) Foundation ( https://www.levf.org/ ), an organization focused on proactively identifying and addressing the most challenging obstacles on the path to the widespread availability of genuinely effective treatments to prevent and reverse human age-related disease. Dr. de Grey is internationally recognized as a visionary biomedical gerontologist who devised the Strategies for Engineered Negligible Senescence: a comprehensive set of methods to rejuvenate the human body, thereby preventing age-related ill health and mortality. He has co-founded multiple non-profit organizations – including Methuselah Foundation, SENS Research Foundation, and now LEV Foundation – to specifically enable and accelerate its development and clinical translation. Dr. de Grey received his BA in Computer Science and Ph.D. in Biology from the University of Cambridge in 1985 and 2000, respectively. He is the author of 'The Mitochondrial Free Radical Theory of Aging', 'Ending Aging', and a large number of academic papers. Dr. de Grey is a Fellow of both the Gerontological Society of America and the American Aging Association, and sits on the advisory boards of numerous scientific journals and research organizations. He is a prolific speaker who regularly presents at conferences and events world-wide. Dr. Michael Rose, Ph.D. ( https://www.faculty.uci.edu/profile/?facultyId=5261 ) is the Director of the Network for Experimental Research on Evolution (NERE), and Professor in the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at the University of California, Irvine, where his main area of work over the years has been the evolution of aging. He received his PhD from the University of Sussex in 1978. In 1991, Dr. Rose published seminal work per his text 'Evolutionary Biology of Aging' exploring a view of the subject based on antagonistic pleiotropy, the hypothesis that aging is caused by genes that have two effects, one acting early in life and the other much later. The genes are favored by natural selection as a result of their early-life benefits, and the costs that accrue much later appear as incidental side-effects that we identify as aging. Dr. Rose's laboratory has conducted the longest-running artificial selection experiment designed to test the theory of antagonistic pleiotropy using Fruit flies (Drosophila melanogaster) bred for longevity by collecting eggs from the longest-lived flies in each generation. The experiment has run since 1981, and has produced flies with quadruple the original life span. In 1997, Dr. Rose was awarded the Busse Research Prize by the World Congress of Gerontology. He has authored 10 books, including 'The Long Tomorrow: How Advances in Evolutionary Biology Can Help Us Postpone Aging'. Support the show

This episode with Michael Rose will look at longevity from an evolutionary perspective.  Michael is an experimental evolutionary biologist who has spent the last several decades running experiments to understand the role that natural selection plays in aging.  He's a distinguished professor of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at UC Irvine, and a great talk at the Ancestral Health Symposium 2018 on Diet, Aging and Evolutionary Mismatch.  You can check it out on the AHS YouTube site.In today's episode, our discussion touches on fundamental questions, including:  the nature of aging, how evolutionary forces control lifespan, whether aging can stop, the optimal diet and lifestyle for living longer, and how that should be adjusted as you get older.  Michael bases his conclusions on decades of experimental research and hard mathematical analysis.  It's a wide ranging discussion with some surprising solutions. In the latest episode of The Flip N' Shift Podcast, my guest is Father Sean Raftis.  Father Sean Raftis of the Parish Podcast Project and a Diocesan Priest of the Diocese of Helena, Montana. We are chatting with Father Sean Raftis, a Catholic Priest of the Diocese of Helena in the great state of Montana.  Father Sean went to Gonzaga University for his Bachelors Degree and later received several Master Degrees in the following, Master of Arts in Communications, Master of Arts in Philosophy, Master of Divinity, and Received Honors at the Boston College School of Theology and Ministry.  He has written several published works such as a piece in The National Jesuit News, June 2005 titled, “Pope John Paul II, The Voice of the Gospel of Our Age.” Father Sean has an extraordinary background in teaching theology and communications while volunteering his time at Women's Crisis Pregnancy Centers.   Fun Fact about Father Sean, Some of you may know about the 2013 Wall Street Journal article that inspired the 2018 blockbuster movie, TAG.    This movie is based on a true story.  Father Sean is apart of the original group of men who have been playing the game of tag for 23 years, starting in 1990.   Website:  https://www.parishpodcast.com/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/FrSeanRaftis Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/rafteye/ LinkedIn:  https://www.linkedin.com/in/fr-sean-raftis-782b2743/ Father Sean discusses the differences in types of priests (Quote is used as a reference point of discussion):   “Within the Catholic Church, there are two types of priests: religious order priests and diocesan priests. A diocese is a group of parishes, or communities, overseen by a bishop. Religious order priests belong to a particular religious order within Catholicism, such as the Franciscans, Dominicans and Jesuits."  www.brescia.edu Father Sean discusses sexual orientation and the requirements on becoming a priest. We discussed the book, Good Bye, Good Men by Michael Rose. (Available on Amazon, https://a.co/d/0AAYHWX) (Quote is used as a reference point of discussion) “Michael Rose discusses the causes of the chronic priest shortage, including the misuse of psychological screening and what appears to be blatant discrimination against the kind of young men who were once considered ideal candidates for the vocation.” Father Sean discussed his thoughts on the proposed alternate catechism for youth who identify as Homosexual who want to practice the Catholic Faith. (Quote is used as a reference point of discussion.) "According to the National Catholic Register (July 2017) Father James Martin also known as the “LGBTQAI + priest” in certain publications proposed an alternate catechism for those youth who are homosexuals that want to practice the Catholic Faith." For thousands of years, homo sapiens as a species thrived on a whole food, animal protein-centered diet. Now, we eat primarily processed foods and have the highest rates of lifestyle-related diseases in our history. Join us today as we talk to Brian Sanders about the underlying causes of these diseases and the impact of our diet. Brian is the filmmaker behind Food Lies, host of the Peak Human podcast, and founder of SAPIEN Org. Brian had his eyes opened when he lost both of his parents at the age of 30 to lifestyle-related diseases, and he embarked on a journey to discover our ancestral food culture. Tune in to find out how Brian helps those around him make lifestyle shifts (even when they don't want to listen), and how the current medical standards are not stringent enough to keep us healthy. We dive into what Food Lies is about, and how big corporations and organizations drive the propaganda behind the current food trends. Brian talks us through his experience meal prepping and eating with traditional cultures across the globe, and how this shaped his perception around ancestral eating habits. Food should be about so much more than simply satisfying cravings or satiating ourselves, and both Brian and Andrés relate their experiences around ancestral food culture. We also find out why tracking macros is a selfish and pointless exercise, and how modern marketing has altered our health behaviors. If you're looking for a roadmap to your healthiest self, press "Play" now!Key Points From This Episode:Meet Brian Sanders, host of the Peak Human podcast, filmmaker of Food Lies, and founder of SAPIEN Org. Why Brian does what he does: how personal loss and aging caused his awakening. Brian's advice on how to approach parents and siblings about their health choices. How the current medical standards are failing us: normal does not mean healthy. What Food Lies is about, and the common misconceptions around food. The conspiracies underlying our current food systems. How the average person can communicate Brian's information to their circle. Why “healthy” food is not always so healthy, and how you can avoid seed oils. The process of eating food and cooking, and what it means on an ancestral level. Brian's experience of how traditional cultures eat and share meals. Why Brian and Andrés feel tracking macros is a selfish exercise and a waste of time. The foods that contain the nutrients that you need: whole foods. Is there such a thing as too many micronutrients?Brian's closing comments: double animal protein and remove processed food. The food lies about a plant-based diet. Where you can contact Brian, and when to expect the release of Sapiens. Links Mentioned in Today's Episode:BiOptimizersBrian Sanders on LinkedInSAPIEN OrgPeak HumanFood LiesDr. Michael Rose on the Peak Human podcastAlan AragonAndrés PreschelKnow Your Physio PodcastSupport the show

In this episode hear Olly Belcher, President of the St Edmund Hall Alumni Association, in conversation with former Adjutant-General of the British Army General Sir Michael Rose. Sir Michael was born in 1940 in Quetta, former British India. In 1964, having graduated from Teddy Hall with a degree in PPE (Politics, Philosophy and Economics), he was commissioned into the Coldstream Guards. He subsequently served with the Special Air Service Regiment in the Middle and Far East. He commanded the Regiment during the Falkland Islands conflict and the 39 Infantry Brigade in Northern Ireland. In the early 90s, Sir Michael was Commander of the UK Field Army, and Inspector General Territorial Army, leading the UN Protection Force in Bosnia-Herzegovina. In January 1995, he was appointed Adjutant General to the Army Board and he served as 28th Colonel of the Coldstream Guards on his retirement from 1999 – 2009. Since leaving the Army, Sir Michael has written and lectured extensively on peacekeeping and leadership. In this podcast, you will hear why Sir Michael believes his degree in PPE helped him to make some of the hardest decisions of his career, and how, now in his early eighties, the Hall spirit still plays a big part in his life as he keeps up with his Teddy Hall friends and stays fit by walking miles every day. Spirit of the Hall podcast is produced by the St Edmund Hall Association, the voluntary alumni body independent which represents all Aularians. In 1926, it was imperative that factory workers were present on the assembly line for eight hours a day. Fortunately, a lot has changed in the work environment since 1926. Why, then, are we still so attached to the 9-5 workday that manifested almost a century ago? In today's episode, Michael Rose and Nikole Rose bring in Allison Gibbs, Director of Marketing Success at Mojo Media Labs, to discuss ROWE: Results Only Work Environment. They cover: What ROWE looks like implemented Why ROWE is considered radical in the workplace Setting work boundaries when you're only concerned with results Dealing with sludge Resources mentioned in this episode: CultureRx To listen to this episode and many more like it, subscribe to #FlipMyFunnel on Apple Podcasts. #057 - Is the Paleo Diet Good or Bad for Aging? - Professor Michael Rose

Why do we age? The fundamental causes of aging at the molecular level are relatively well established. But the question of why aging happens in the first place is a more challenging one, one which has bedeviled evolutionary biologists and philosophers for years. You might think, intuitively, that the process of natural selection would gradually eliminate senescence. Aging increases mortality, and organisms that experience impaired function and ultimately die would not be able to produce as many offspring as one that was able to live (and to reproduce) indefinitely, or at least for a much longer timespan. So, you would assume that this would result in selection for organisms that live much longer, generate more offspring, and ultimately the causes of age-related deterioration would fade from the genome. Yet aging is very commonly observed. Why is that? Natural selection is strongest in early life. This makes sense - the natural environment is full of predators, disease, and other perils that often kill organisms when they are young and vulnerable. Consequently, genes and pathways that enhance survival and reproduction in early life are likely to be favored - even if they come at the cost of problems later in life, when selection is comparatively weak. But is aging inevitable? Can it be slowed, or postponed, or stopped altogether? In this installment of humanOS, Dan talks with Michael Rose. Dr. Rose is a Distinguished Professor of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at UC Irvine. He is a prolific biologist whose research into the evolution of aging has effectively transformed that field. Rose's laboratory has been testing the theory of antagonistic pleiotropy for nearly forty years, through artificial selection experiments in fruit flies. In what was perhaps his most famous experiment, Rose allowed flies to only reproduce successfully if they laid their eggs late in life. He discarded the eggs of any flies that laid eggs before they reached fifty years of age. Over a few generations, this population of flies evolved longer lifespans. Why might this be? Remember that natural selection is strongest early in life, and becomes weak later on. In theory, if adults reproduce when they are older, natural selection is apt to favor genes that enhance resilience (and reproduction) later into the lifespan. Dr. Rose's research into aging has also drawn him to some interesting (and possibly controversial) notions about evolutionary changes in the human diet, and how our age may influence how adapted we are to modern agricultural foods. To learn what that means, and its potential implications, check out the interview!
