In this episode, Blake sits down with legendary singer-songwriter Mary Gauthier for a deep, honest, and surprisingly gear-heavy chat. Mary didn't pick up songwriting seriously until her mid-thirties—after years as a Boston-based chef, restaurant owner, and, as she puts it, a total mess. But once she got sober and started hitting open mics, everything changed. They talk about her early love for Taylor guitars, her eventual obsession with the low-end growl of vintage Gibsons, and how she's more about tone that serves the song than flashy technique. Mary shares the story behind her breakout song “I Drink,” explains why emotion always trumps complexity, and offers a masterclass in the art of getting doors to open in Nashville—even if you have to sneak in through a window. You'll also hear: The connection between fear and fog (and how to burn both off) What it's like to share a stage with John Prine, Emmylou Harris, and Lucinda Williams Why you should never underestimate the power of a good crust (yes, pizza crust) A crash course in humility, persistence, and the power of being kind This one's a gem. This started them reflecting on what they could add to the conversation as documentary filmmakers who've covered crises throughout their work. Their new film Incandescence weaves together on-the-ground footage with first-person accounts from first responders and people who have lost their homes to wildfire. Incandescence is produced and distributed by the National Film Board. It has its Vancouver premiere on April 11.

Quo vadis? What legal responsibilities do towns have when a simple stroll through a park turns tragic? Join us as we sit down with Michael Mulligan to uncover the layers of liability and negligence that come into play when public spaces fail to safeguard their visitors. Through the lens of a heart-wrenching case involving a young boy in Gibsons who became tetraplegic after a dead tree fell on him, we explore the critical question of whether the town fulfilled its duty of care under the Occupiers Liability Act. Michael helps us dissect the legal obligations and expectations placed on municipalities to ensure safety, including how standards like the Wildlife Danger Tree Assessors course influence these responsibilities.Pivoting to the realm of marine life, we navigate the murky waters of marine mammal regulations with a keen eye on a legal case that raises questions about the fairness of prosecution. When a woman was accused of disturbing killer whales while paddleboarding, it highlighted the labyrinth of modern legal statutes that can ensnare even the most well-meaning individuals. Michael guides us through this legal conundrum, addressing the principle that ignorance is no defence and the peculiar world of licensing fees for hunting marine mammals. We spotlight the legal processes, from evidence handling to upholding an individual's right to a fair trial, ensuring that justice remains not just a concept but a reality.Follow this link for a transcript of the show and links to the cases discussed.

This episode is a conversation between the Gibson brothers, one a pastor and the other an engineer with theological training, discussing how to make decisions about pursuing vocational ministry versus other careers. The core message is that loving Jesus intensely doesn't automatically mean someone should become a pastor, and there's no requirement for a mystical "calling" to enter ministry. They emphasize that both ministry and secular work are valuable pursuits, with secular work fulfilling the "creation mandate" from Genesis to bring order from chaos. The Gibsons suggest that instead of waiting for certainty about God's will, people should try different roles, develop various skills, build relationships, and make wise choices based on their temperament, abilities, and circumstances. They argue that the desire for absolute certainty in career decisions often stems from anxiety rather than faith, and that God can work through multiple paths to accomplish His purposes. The storm rages righteously for another four minutes.“We just tried to write a good, old fashioned rock and roll song,” said Jimmy, “where the listeners would wonder what happened to their socks: well, they got rocked off by The Jimmy Dixon Group! So, we wrote a little rock and roll tune for our vintage electric guitars and plugged 'em into an amp.”Mission accomplished.“Hopefully, people can dig the groove. It's just a song that makes you feel good.”For those who want to groove on the lyrics:Up in the thinnest of airFading a sense to careNo more painLost touch of what is sane“The great thing about a song is that it can have one meaning to one person and mean something completely different to someone else. And neither one is wrong. For me, it's about, I guess, being on a higher plane,” said Jimmy, “however one gets there, and being able to think about who you are, what you're doing, how you're spending your time.”Like, listening to rock and roll?“That's right. Exactly.”The Jimmy Dixon Group is seven people, all with the surname Dixon (no relation anywhere) as far as anybody outside the group is concerned. The website carries the highly entertaining origin story, and anybody willing to believe it is welcome to do so. Jimmy is lead vocals and, with his 1955 Martin D-28, “some guitar.” Chubbs Dixon is the drummer. Cranky Dixon has a 1959 Gibson Les Paul Special and his wife, “Midnight” Mae Dixon, is the pianist. Gary Dixon plays a 1968 Hofner 500/1 bass and sings backing vocals.Capo Dixon, rhythm guitar, is supposedly named for his love of using a capo on his 1967 Martin D12-35 12-string acoustic and his 2017 Rickenbacker 660/12 electric.Benmont Dixon plays strings.“In Thin Air” is the second of 10 tracks on the album Rough Demos, released this year. This is the first music the group has released. Jimmy tells the story of these seven people who just wanted to get together with their vintage instruments and their love for vintage rock and roll and write and play music. A couple years ago, they did just that. They gather in person from time to time but otherwise work and collaborate from a distance.“We didn't go into it thinking we would make an album. We just went into it thinking we'd have a little fun together, writing some songs and playing together. We spent a lot of time on it, and then all of a sudden we had songs that we had a lot of fun making, and we thought somebody would get a little joy out of listening. So we scraped together what we had in the studio and made an album.”The Rough Demos name has its own origin story, supposedly being “recorded whenever and wherever the group could find an empty studio and an engineer who had his back turned,” according to the official group bio. Believing that is optional.“We really love, and we're really proud of, the album.”Their music is inspired by “the roots of rock and roll,” said Jimmy. He cites '50s Chicago blues — Willie Dixon (no relation), Howlin' Wolf, Muddy Waters, Little Walter — then moving into the '60s with artists such as Dylan, and on to the '70s (Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers).he tracks, whether fast and furious like “In Thin Air” or meditative and whimsical like “Capo 5th Fret No. 2” (“Art is dead, long live the art/Priced to move at Neil's new store”), are full of wonderful performances by the musicians. They are about 90 percent done, he says, with the music that will be Rough Demos II, which will be released early next year. They love the tones of the old instruments too, he said, especially the '50s and '60s Fenders, Gibsons and Martins.“They just have their own unique sound that we really love. Nothing wrong with the new stuff, but we love the sound that you get from an old tweed amp after you plug in that Gibson Les Paul.”“In Thin Air,” a fine piece of old-fashioned rock and roll, has, says Jimmy, “a nice groove to it and people can feel the rock and roll.”He says the band has no career destination. We started out not really having a goal in mind, just playing and creating, having fun and getting joy out of music. We take it one small step at a time, and if we can connect with a couple people here and there who really like our music, that is tremendously exciting for us.”Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/creator-to-creators-with-meosha-bean--4460322/support.

He talks about meeting the Gibsons, being welcomed into their community (instead of his proposed “fly on the wall” role), how centered and happy he felt after his first breathwork session, and what he has learned through the process: that breathwork can be an incredibly healing modality, but the magic he has found has been more in the community surrounding it, and the responsibility (and honor) of being a sitter for someone else. He discusses: The first time his breathwork went psychedelic, and speaking with his recently deceased Mothe How he got into filmmaking and why he wants to tell stories about people like the Gibson The beauty of breathwork not having a dogma or doctrine attached to it The power in holding space for someone else, even if it's just being presen The importance of taking action that aligns with psychedelic ethos: What can you do to contribute to your community? and more! Bonamassa is known for his dazzling collection of vintage guitars—which he says has become a target for haters—but he explains that you don't need a '58 Les Paul to get the goods. “It's also the mystique,” he says. “If Jimmy Page played a Tokai, everyone would want a Tokai.” A guitar made two weeks ago, he says, is just as good as a classic. Bonamassa's lightning-quick soloing style, which conjures a hurricane of major and minor pentatonic notes with some phrygian flair, is the stuff of legend, and his tricks on “Blues Deluxe” are plenty. Even though he tries to adhere to a “divide by two” rule to simplify his phrasings, he still stumps Shiflett with a volume swell trick he learned from Roy Buchanan and Danny Gatton. This solo is no walk in the park. Any brave takers up for giving it a shot? Share it and tag us so Shifty can have a look! Most importantly, remember to have fun. “Do whatever you want with the damn thing,” says Bonamassa. “It's just a guitar.” Click below to subscribe to the podcast! Jason Isbell's last Rundown was in 2019. The guitarist and songwriter, who we've called “Americana's poet laureate,” is a huge gearhead though—and his collection is truly the stuff of dreams—so a lot can happen in a few years. Currently touring with his acclaimed 400 Unit band in support of the highly acclaimed Weathervanes album, he rolls with a stash of vintage Fenders and Gibsons that would make even the least gear-motivated among us blush. That's not to mention his enviable traveling amp and effect closets. Isbell invited Perry Bean and the PG team to the Ryman for a look at his current touring rig and that of Sadler Vaden, the band's ripping co-guitarist whose relatively more modest collection is still quite the enviable one!Brought to you by D'Addario:https://ddar.io/wykyk-rrhttps://www.daddario.com/XPNDRR

In this solo installment of Shred With Shifty, host Chris Shiflett shares juicy unreleased footage from previous episodes, rates fan submission solos, and fields questions from viewers. This week's Shred With Shifty keeps the spotlight on our intrepid host and shameless shredmeister, as Shifty kicks things off with a swift hammer-on ascent up the neck. Next, he shares a few ace videos submitted by fans where they tackle Alex Lifeson's solo on Rush's “Limelight,” though Shifty has some choice words for one shredder's choice in guitars. (Plus, he duets one lucky Foos cover band expert's rendition of the solo on “Long Road To Ruin.”) Shifty shares some unseen clips from his conversations on the pod thus far. He talks Epiphones versus Gibsons with Lifeson, soccer fandom and arthritis with Rivers Cuomo, and guitar-painting with Lindsay Ell. Best of all, Nile Rogers dishes on how he rescued David Bowie's dismal “Let's Dance” demo. To round out the show, Shiflett answers questions from viewers. He talks about his love for Strymon's Iridium and how they fit into his solo shows, plus he reveals what he's playing through on Shred With Shifty. Later on, he recounts how a malfunctioning amp during “This Is A Call” ended with a smashed guitar, his favorite pedalboard picks (“Put like 15 pedals on your pedalboard and go to the races!”), his amp-switching rig and pre-show warm up routine with Foo Fighters, and how to play his leads on Foos' emotional new track, “Under You.” Look out for the next episode of Shred With Shifty, when Bon Jovi's Richie Sambora joins Shiflett to teach him the screaming solo for "Dead Or Alive."
