The beloved bassist delivered one of this program's most popular conversations [#66, Spring 2023]; Rocklin was kind enough to come back for another round, a shorter interview recorded mid-Feb.2025 aboard Jam Cruise 21. We linked up on my cabin balcony for a discussion that covered the band's long-awaited return to The Boat (and Alana's maiden voyage!), new Sector 9 compositions and their forthcoming LP, curating intentional setlists and introducing material in the live element, the post-pandemic current touring model, live music bringing people together in tough times, and more! 0:00 - ep.085 preview 3:30 - sponsor - OM Festival 5:30 - The Upful Update 10:30 - introducing ALANA ROCKLIN 14:30 - interview w/Alana [33 min] 47:30 - afterglow > CORNFLOWER spot 52:10 - introducing ASHER FULERO 56:10 - interview w/ Asher [62 min] 1:57:45 - sign-off, ViBE Junkie Jamz Alana's chat is chased with a lengthier convo featuring Portland, OR's virtuosic keyboardist/producer/composer ASHER FULERO. We unpack his phenomenal 2024 solo LP 'Worlds', a hybrid organic-electronic affair that remains among my faves last calendar year.  Fulero details a journey through the creative process and industry opportunities, how this particular project was wrought with false starts and new lessons/understandings; plus recording/releasing original music in the ever-confounding streaming/social media era of sound-art and consumerism. On September 12, 1974, Boston Public Schools bused the first students across town as a part of a highly controversial school integration program. The program was a result of Judge W. Arthur Garrity's federal court order that mandated that both black and white students be bused to schools outside of their neighborhoods. What followed was a series of protests and riots that helped cement Boston's reputation as an exceptionally racist city. While this moment is a major flashpoint in Boston's history, it is not the whole story. Busing was the culmination of a years-long fight between a Black community that wanted a better education for its children and a white community resistant to change. Today on The Common, Boston journalist, lecturer, and historian Dart Adams, joins us to break down this history. If you want to learn more about the history of busing in Boston, check out WBUR's series “Busing's Legacy in Boston, 50 Years Later,” which was done in collaboration with The Emancipator. Over the years we've had many discussions on human sexuality and spirituality, including religion's response to homosexuality. As of late, Pope Francis has been making headlines and encouraging controversy with his recent declaration that gives permission to priests to bless gay couples. While many have accused the pontiff of opening the door to a future that endorses same-sex marriage, allies are insisting that this is not the case. The issue here is quite technical and nuanced. To unravel it all we called upon Ryan Di Corpo, a protege of Fr. James Martin (an advocate encouraging dialogue on this issue who has appeared on Common Threads several times). Ryan has a great understanding of the history of how the Church has dealt with this hot-button topic and where they may go from here. Ryan Di Corpo is the managing editor of Outreach. A former Joseph A. O'Hare, S.J., fellow at America, his work has appeared in The Washington Post, Boston College Magazine, The Emancipator and elsewhere. A csendes kocogás megismétlődött. A világosság felé rohantam tovább. A széles vállú csendőr utamba állt. Aztán a két cipőjét, amit a papír fedetlen hagyott. Kialudt szememben a lámpák fénye. Haza? Vagy a temető halottas házába?— Hát meghalt?... — kérdeztem értelmetlenül és végignéztem az embereken. “The one embedded bias that we definitely have when we get up every day to cover the news anew is that we're biased for democracy. Let's just admit that. So if you're biased for democracy, then you have to be biased for racial justice, because racial justice is embedded in the democratic promise.” - Deborah DouglasSome of the most polarized debates in the United States today stem from issues of race, from policing to how history should be taught in schools. Our guest this episode, award-winning American journalist Deborah Douglas, believes the answer to polarization isn't to cloister ourselves in so-called “safe spaces.” Rather, she sees journalism as a “brave space” to excavate the impact of America's racial history on the current moment. True confession time: Sarina and I have always wanted to make something like this. I'm talking about The Storyteller's Workbook, which is a gorgeous combination of structural writing guide and writing bullet journal created by Isabel Ibañez, the author of Woven in Moonlight and Written in Starlight, a fantasy YA series that's a hit with TikTok and Time Magazine both as well as a designer whose work you've seen while drooling in the paper sections of stores like Anthropologie and Adrienne Young, the New York Times and international bestselling author of the Sky and Sea duology and the Fable series whose first “adult book”, Spells for Forgetting, came out last fall. (That's in quotes because who are we kidding, adults read the heck out of her earlier work.)The episode is fun, all about making something like this—and Adrienne and Isabel's writing processes, the examples they share and the ways the book reflects how they really work. But what you're really here for is to see what it looks like—which is, in a word, gorgeous. If you'd use something like this, you can't do better—the paper is nice, too, suited for any kind of pen, there's not going be bleed-through, it lays flat… all the things. W.T.F.P's fourth season arrives with the presence of the multi-layered ABENA SANKOFA IMHOTEP, a highly revered creator, public speaker and empowerment facilitator currently enjoying the success of her most recently authored children's book "Omari's Big Tree and the Mighty Djembe."  ABENA discusses the challenges faced in bringing life to a written story in the form of a published book for distribution. The journey of understanding one's past to positively navigate one's future and how it led to finding one individual's name is detailed.  The controversy of Sinterklaas' helper Zwarte Piet of Netherland low country folklore is raised, as those aware of the traditional St. Nicholas' feast remain divided on its perception as innocent fun tradition vs. celebration of a derogatory depiction. PHATEROC discovers mid episode that Omari's Big Tree and the Mighty Djembe has served to remind him yet again, "what is true is simply the truth.... and nobody owns the truth."PHATAL EXTRACTION: "The challenge was....I was in the way, but I was also missing." - Abena.LEARN MORE about the Sankofa Literary and Empowerment Group.LISTEN TO Black & Privilege in America Podcast, hosted by Abena & Jay.WATCH Abena's 2021 TEDx presentation of perspective as an African American in Iowa.FIND YOUR COPY of Omari's Big Tree and the Mighty Djembe

Introducing Sabad Hajare Patshahi 10, new translations and commentaries of Guru Gobind Singh Sahib's composition. The unique contexts and subversions these compositions reveal are a treat for those who yearn to get to know Guru Gobind Singh Sahib and those who yearn to celebrate Guru Gobind Singh Sahib. In the fourth composition of the “Sabad Hajare Patisahi 10” (popularly Shabad Hazare Patshahi 10) series, Guru Gobind Singh Sahib proclaims to the world that he seeks the protection from only the 1-Divine; his honor and dignity are with the 1. Guru Sahib equates 1-Divine with all deities; 1 has all their attributes and more, as texts and people identify with. In this fifth podcast, Harinder Singh and Jasleen Kaur explore Guru Gobind Singh Sahib's many invocations of divine names and attributes and their contexts in larger Indic systems. They then discuss Guru Gobind Singh Sahib's reframing of these names within the larger understanding of IkOankar as the Ocean of compassion, the One who protects our honor.
