Please support us https://www.patreon.com/mlst https://discord.gg/aNPkGUQtc5 https://twitter.com/MLStreetTalk Lance Da Costa aims to advance our understanding of intelligent systems by modelling cognitive systems and improving artificial systems. He's a PhD candidate with Greg Pavliotis and Karl Friston jointly at Imperial College London and UCL, and a student in the Mathematics of Random Systems CDT run by Imperial College London and the University of Oxford. He completed an MRes in Brain Sciences at UCL with Karl Friston and Biswa Sengupta, an MASt in Pure Mathematics at the University of Cambridge with Oscar Randal-Williams, and a BSc in Mathematics at EPFL and the University of Toronto. Summary: Lance did pure math originally but became interested in the brain and AI. He started working with Karl Friston on the free energy principle, which claims all intelligent agents minimize free energy for perception, action, and decision-making. Lance has worked to provide mathematical foundations and proofs for why the free energy principle is true, starting from basic assumptions about agents interacting with their environment. This aims to justify the principle from first physics principles. Dr. Scarfe and Da Costa discuss different approaches to AI - the free energy/active inference approach focused on mimicking human intelligence vs approaches focused on maximizing capability like deep reinforcement learning. Lance argues active inference provides advantages for explainability and safety compared to black box AI systems. It provides a simple, sparse description of intelligence based on a generative model and free energy minimization. They discuss the need for structured learning and acquiring core knowledge to achieve more human-like intelligence. Lance highlights work from Josh Tenenbaum's lab that shows similar learning trajectories to humans in a simple Atari-like environment. Incorporating core knowledge constraints the space of possible generative models the agent can use to represent the world, making learning more sample efficient. Lance argues active inference agents with core knowledge can match human learning capabilities. They discuss how to make generative models interpretable, such as through factor graphs. The goal is to be able to understand the representations and message passing in the model that leads to decisions. In summary, Lance argues active inference provides a principled approach to AI with advantages for explainability, safety, and human-like learning. Combining it with core knowledge and structural learning aims to achieve more human-like artificial intelligence. https://www.lancelotdacosta.com/ https://twitter.com/lancelotdacosta Interviewer: Dr. Tim Scarfe TOC 00:00:00 - Start 00:09:27 - Intelligence 00:12:37 - Priors / structure learning 00:17:21 - Core knowledge 00:29:05 - Intelligence is specialised 00:33:21 - The magic of agents 00:39:30 - Intelligibility of structure learning #artificialintelligence #activeinference

Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/mlst Discord: https://discord.gg/ESrGqhf5CB The discussion between Tim Scarfe and David Foster provided an in-depth critique of the arguments made by panelists at the Munk AI Debate on whether artificial intelligence poses an existential threat to humanity. While the panelists made thought-provoking points, Scarfe and Foster found their arguments largely speculative, lacking crucial details and evidence to support claims of an impending existential threat. Scarfe and Foster strongly disagreed with Max Tegmark's position that AI has an unparalleled “blast radius” that could lead to human extinction. Tegmark failed to provide a credible mechanism for how this scenario would unfold in reality. His arguments relied more on speculation about advanced future technologies than on present capabilities and trends. As Foster argued, we cannot conclude AI poses a threat based on speculation alone. Evidence is needed to ground discussions of existential risks in science rather than science fiction fantasies or doomsday scenarios. They found Yann LeCun's statements too broad and high-level, critiquing him for not providing sufficiently strong arguments or specifics to back his position. While LeCun aptly noted AI remains narrow in scope and far from achieving human-level intelligence, his arguments lacked crucial details on current limitations and why we should not fear superintelligence emerging in the near future. As Scarfe argued, without these details the discussion descended into “philosophy” rather than focusing on evidence and data. Scarfe and Foster also took issue with Yoshua Bengio's unsubstantiated speculation that machines would necessarily develop a desire for self-preservation that threatens humanity. There is no evidence today's AI systems are developing human-like general intelligence or desires, let alone that these attributes would manifest in ways dangerous to humans. The question is not whether machines will eventually surpass human intelligence, but how and when this might realistically unfold based on present technological capabilities. Bengio's arguments relied more on speculation about advanced future technologies than on evidence from current systems and research. In contrast, they strongly agreed with Melanie Mitchell's view that scenarios of malevolent or misguided superintelligence are speculation, not backed by evidence from AI as it exists today. Claims of an impending “existential threat” from AI are overblown, harmful to progress, and inspire undue fear of technology rather than consideration of its benefits. Mitchell sensibly argued discussions of risks from emerging technologies must be grounded in science and data, not speculation, if we are to make balanced policy and development decisions. Overall, while the debate raised thought-provoking questions about advanced technologies that could eventually transform our world, none of the speakers made a credible evidence-based case that today's AI poses an existential threat. Scarfe and Foster argued the debate failed to discuss concrete details about current capabilities and limitations of technologies like language models, which remain narrow in scope. General human-level AI is still missing many components, including physical embodiment, emotions, and the "common sense" reasoning that underlies human thinking. Claims of existential threats require extraordinary evidence to justify policy or research restrictions, not speculation. By discussing possibilities rather than probabilities grounded in evidence, the debate failed to substantively advance our thinking on risks from AI and its plausible development in the coming decades. If Genesis, according to British comedian and fan, Al Murray "were the progressive rock band who progressed", then Peter Gabriel, once solo, would be the one who progressed the most. Who would have thought listening to early Genesis would eventually take the listener to Senegal, Armenia, South Africa and beyond via the artistic endeavors of their former vocalist? This is a journey through Peter Gabriel's solo albums, his live recordings and soundtrack compositions. During his forty-year plus solo career, Gabriel has become a worldwide pop star with his early, self-titled albums and his seminal 1986 record 'So'. He's had hit singles throughout his career, including "Big Time" and the poignant "In Your Eyes". He also helped pioneer video creativity with the song "Sledgehammer". In doing so, he's reached beyond his progressive rock background to achieve a level of respect that other musicians from that genre could only dream about. You may have heard many of these songs before, but there's always something new to be found by digging in the dirt. This is the prefect guide to his music for new listeners and long term fans alike. Graeme Scarfe is a freelance writer. He was born in the 1960's, educated in the comprehensive system in the 1970's & 1980's and graduated from Bournemouth University in the 1990's. He's worked as a music journalist, sound recordist, stand-up comedian and Film & Media lecturer. He wrote the original screenplay for the 1999 British Horror film "Lighthouse" and the comedy novels "Arable Farm" and "Seagulls on Speed". Grame is married with two children and lives in Sussex. Ross Ransome is at the top of his profession; one of the most successful, and certainly one of the richest, plastic surgeons in the business. Such a man would expect his wife to be perfect - and why not? After all, he has spent enough hours in surgery to get her that way. But when his wife falls ill she turns her back on conventional medicine, and her arid marriage, and seeks help from the world of alternative medicine and a charismatic therapist who promises not just medical salvation. For Ransome, this is the ultimate betrayal. It defies logic, and Ross Ransome is a profoundly logical man. Logically, he can see no reason why any man should have his wife when he can't. It's all completely rational... 'Irresistibly readable as well as utterly believable' Robert Goddard

He worked on the LMD detector very recently and it didn't go off until a asian woman came in. He is also the least unlikely to be replaced because he worked with Radcliffe. He should be the last as he is Radcliffe/AIDA main treath and closest.   Stargate Pioneer 4 days ago Good thoughts and I've been thinking about this for a few days. I was thinking that Fitz could have tampered with the LMD detector from the beginning.   superkoosable 3 days ago It is possible. But everything is possible. Fitz being the replaced the whole time should come out as a shock later. Now it comes out as one of the four. No need to him to be one since the beginning from a writers pov. On top of that we were told by radicliffe that at one point there were two LMD's in place. That turned out to be May and Radcliffe himself.  We also some him developing the framework with May the whole time, never Fitz. I was disappointed that Fitz was an LMD. I had hoped that he and Simmons would be fighting against four LMD's instead of Daisy. And it makes no sense to me that they never replaced her. She's always been the most dangrous one. Luke Cage Episode 7 Review Podcast "Manifest" Spoiler filled Synopsis Written by Andy Goddard Directed by Akela Cooper Cornell Stokes  (Mahershala Ali) is released from police custody as Scarfe's ledger is found inadmissible. However, the fortunes of his cousin Mariah Dillard (Alfre Woodard) are less fortunate as her reputation and career are both still on-the-line. Pressurised to resign from the council and vulnerable her world is given fresh focus by an unexpected meeting with Shades. Back in Harlem Cottonmouth looks to deal with Luke Cage (Mike Colter) once and for all and threatens to expose Cage's true identity Carl Lucas. Whilst Luke's instincts are to run Claire Temple (Rosario Dawson) persuades him to fight and Cage scores another victory taking Domingo Colon's (Jacob Vargas) Hammer weapons off the streets of Harlem. Back at Harlem's Paradise another fight is about to break out as Dillard visits Stokes to convince him to let go of his obsession with Cage. Deep dark family histories and relationships between Mamma Mabel (LaTanya Richardson Jackson), Uncle Pistol Pete (Curtiss Cook), young Mariah (Megan Miller) and young Cornell (Elijah Boothe) finally boil to the surface and a family secret leads to spilt blood. On the other side of Harlem by the docks her cousin Cornell Stokes (Mahershala Ali) is preparing to exchange guns from Rafael Scarfe (Frank Whaley) to buy off Domingo Colon (Jacob Vargas) so he can purchase the "Judas bullet" to take Luke Cage (Mike Colter) down! However, Scarfe attempts to leverage Stokes but his plan backfires and he is left critically wounded on the streets of Harlem by Cottonmouth. He is hunted by Stokes and by the NYPD as his dirty past begins to creep up on him. On the run Scarfe seeks refuge at Pop's Barber Shop and help from Luke Cage as he realises his enemy's enemy is his friend and only chance at redemption. In his delirious state, having bullets removed by Claire Temple (Rosario Dawson), Scarfe tells Cage of his involvement in the murder of Chico (Brian 'Sene' Marc) and points him to where he can find his notebook with incriminating evidence on Stokes and his police payroll. As Cage and Temple, with a deteriorating Scarfe, race to One Police Plaza to turn over the evidence and get Scarfe to surgery they are ambushed by mercenaries hired by Stokes. Satirical cartoonist Gerald Scarfe nominates Walt Disney. Gerald Scarfe spent much of his childhood in his sick bed, so it's not surprising that Disney cartoons and feature films meant so much to him. He can still recall the thrill at the prospect of seeing Pinocchio at the cinema, and then the agony of being lead away again in the rain because the tickets were too expensive. Walt Disney came from a working family. His god-fearing father Elias, said by one writer to have 'hated Capital, and favoured Labour, but really needed to make a buck', found work where he could. So Walt lived a peripatetic childhood, and sought solace in drawing and play acting. Hard times early on did not make Walt frugal with money in adulthood, and despite the huge successes of the golden era of Disney, it was only with the opening of Disneyland that Walt attained any substantial personal wealth. You don't have to look far to find myth surrounding Walt Disney. Even after his death, rumours that his body had been cryogenically frozen spread so widely that they soon slipped into folklore. He had actually been cremated, but the readiness with which the cryogenic claim was accepted perhaps bears witness to a man who was terrified of dying, who believed in the white hope of technology and who, some might say, had been searching all his life for an escape into an immortal, fairytale world. Matthew Parris, Gerald Scarfe and guest experts Brian Sibley and Richard Williams, creator of Roger Rabbit, discuss the life of a complex cultural icon. A man who was seemingly unpretentious, and did not fit the image of movie mogul with his scruffy tweed jacket and awkward demeanour, yet a man who was accused of being a tyrannical egomaniac. The son of a socialist who ended up naming names at the House of Un- American Activities committee. Above all else perhaps though, they discuss the life of a man who strove tirelessly for perfection and who changed the cultural landscape of a little boy called Gerald, and arguably of the world, for ever. Scarfe himself is best known for his classic images lampooning the great and the good of politics, and also in his iconic animation for Pink Floyd's The Wall. He reveals in this programme that he also spent time working on the Disney production Hercules. The producer is Miles Warde.

A volume temperature relationship for liquid GeO2 and some geophysically relevant derived parameters for network liquids

The thermal expansivity of liquid GeO2 at temperatures just above the glass transition has been obtained using a combination of scanning calorimetry and dilatometry. The calorimetric and dilatometric curves of c p and dV/dT are normalized to the temperature derivative of fictive temperature versus temperature using the method of Webb et al. (1992). This normalization, based on the equivalence of relaxation parameters for volume and enthalpy, allows the completion of the dilatometric trace across the glass transition to yield liquid expansivity and volume. The values of liquid volume and expansivity obtained in this study are combined with high temperature densitometry determinations of the liquid volume of GeO2 by Sekiya et al. (1980) to yield a temperature-volume relation for GeO2 melt from 660 to 1400 °C. Liquid GeO2 shows a strongly temperature-dependent liquid molar expansivity, decreasing from 20.27 × 10–4 cm3 mol–1°C–1 to 1.97 × 10–4cm3 mol–1 °C–1 with increasing temperature. The coefficient of volume thermal expansion ( v ) decreases from 76.33 × 10–6 °C–1 to 2.46 × 10–6 °C–1 with increasing temperature. A qualitatively similar volume-temperature relationship, with v decreasing from 335 × 10–6 °C–1 to 33 × 10–6 °C–1 with increasing temperature, has been observed previously in liquid B2O3. The determination of the glass transition temperature, liquid volume, liquid and glassy expansivities and heat capacities in this study, combined with compressibility data for glassy and liquid GeO2 from the literature (Soga 1969; Kurkjian et al. 1972; Scarfe et al. 1987) allows the calculation of the Prigogine-Defay ratio (), c p -c v and the thermal Grüneisen parameter ( th) for GeO2. From available data on liquid SiO2 it is concluded that liquid GeO2 is not a good analog for the low pressure properties of liquid SiO2.
