In this enlightening episode of "Father and Joe," Joe Rockey and Father Boniface Hicks engage in a profound discussion about the dynamics of the apostles' relationships with Jesus, exploring how these interactions reflect our contemporary relationships with God. The episode begins with an examination of the apostles' journey with Jesus, acknowledging their fluctuating faith and fear, especially during significant moments like the calming of the storm and the events leading up to Good Friday.Joe and Father delve into the innate human tendency to call upon divine intervention only during times of distress, neglecting to recognize and invite God's presence throughout the mundane and joyous aspects of our lives. They challenge listeners to consider how their own relationship with God is similarly compartmentalized, perhaps reduced to moments of desperation or prosperity, rather than an ongoing, integrated communion.Father Boniface emphasizes the importance of fostering a relationship with God that transcends circumstantial need. By drawing parallels between modern practices and the apostles' misconceptions, he highlights how embracing holistic spirituality requires acknowledging God in every facet of daily life—from tasks as simple as schooling and business to profound life decisions and moments of crisis. The episode lays bare the pitfalls of relegating spirituality to a mere contingency measure and proposes a transformative approach through kindness and curiosity. These tools enable individuals to explore their spiritual lives more fully, understanding the habitual barriers that limit divine interaction. Joe and Father stress the importance of cultivating a spiritual discipline where Jesus is omnipresent—integrated seamlessly into every decision, action, and relationship.Listeners are invited to use the forthcoming Easter celebrations as a catalyst for this change, fostering a spiritual habit that welcomes God's grace into every moment. By reflecting on the kindness and curiosity method, one can start to dismantle the subconscious walls that hinder spiritual growth, paving the way for a more profound connection with God.Tags:faith journey, relationship with God, apostles, spiritual growth, Jesus Christ, Easter reflection, divine presence, spirituality, kindness and curiosity, overcoming fear, holistic spirituality, modern faith, religion, integrating God, personal growth, apostles' faith, divine intervention, spiritual discipline, trusting God, cultivating faith, God in daily life, transformative spirituality, finding God, spiritual habits, opening to God, divine connection, spiritual transformation, fear and faith, transcending need, divine communion, spiritual celebration, faith reinforcement, God in moments, embracing spirituality, inner spirituality, relationship dynamics, faith obstacles, spiritual awareness, Easter journeyHashtags:#FaithJourney, #RelationshipWithGod, #Apostles, #SpiritualGrowth, #JesusChrist, #EasterReflection, #DivinePresence, #Spirituality, #KindnessAndCuriosity, #OvercomingFear, #HolisticSpirituality, #ModernFaith, #IntegratingGod, #PersonalGrowth, #ApostlesFaith, #DivineIntervention, #SpiritualDiscipline, #TrustingGod, #CultivatingFaith, #GodInDailyLife, #TransformativeSpirituality, #FindingGod, #SpiritualHabits, #OpeningToGod, #DivineConnection, #SpiritualTransformation, #FearAndFaith, #TranscendingNeed, #DivineCommunion, #SpiritualCelebration, #FaithReinforcement, #GodInMoments, #EmbracingSpirituality, #InnerSpirituality, #RelationshipDynamics, #FaithObstacles, #SpiritualAwareness, #EasterJourney
Has the US become a bad place to be a Christian? In a recent NY Times feature, writer Aaron Renn, who has been called the "Malcolm Gladwell of Conservative Christianity," claims that America has shifted into a "negative world" where Christianity is a social liability. In this episode, Mark and Kelly wrestle with this idea that Christianity is losing its cultural dominance in the US. We cover a range of topics such as the prevalence of Christianity (a recent PRRI study asserts that 2/3 of Americans identify as Christian), Christian nationalism, persecution, tolerance, inclusion, privilege and power, the response of Progressive Christians, and what it even means to be a Christian in the first place. Join me as we move forward with joy, embracing each moment. Remember, above all, you are deeply loved. TODAY'S DEVOTION: This life of faith requires two feet to walk. We live in this tension. On one hand, we go through things and we want to be healed and delivered. We want things to work out, and at times, God is delighted to do just that—to provide, to heal, to deliver. So one step of faith is asking for and seeking these things from God. But with the other foot, the other step that we must take is to understand that this light and momentary affliction is working out for us something of eternal importance. The life of faith often entails learning to walk amidst those two very real tensions where we hold firm to the promise that God is indeed our healer, our deliverer, redeemer. He will indeed do all that he has promised. And yet at the same time, there very well may be something that He wants to teach us through it. Maybe He will choose to heal you today, and maybe He won't. But we also know that we will indeed be healed. All of creation will be restored in Him, and that day is coming. In the meantime, whatever the affliction that you're suffering through, it is momentary. And in the scales of eternity, Paul says they are light. It may not feel like that right here and right now, but faith in God's goodness helps us to see beyond the right here and the right now. And faith is an invitation to enter into the presence of God. His healing, His deliverance, His redemption isn't just designated for some distant time. We can begin to experience those things in part even today. God has something he wants to teach us all, and we need to trust Him and walk with Him through all that life brings us. He'll prove himself strong in our weakness. He will be your comforter and your strength. Walk this way of faith with both feet and trust Him each step of the way. That's the prayer that I have for my own soul. That's the prayer that I have for my family, for my wife, and my daughters, and my son. And that's the prayer that I have for you. May it be so. TODAY'S PRAYERS: Lord God Almighty and everlasting father you have brought us in safety to this new day preserve us with your Mighty power that we might not fall into sin or be overcome by adversity. And in all we do, direct us to the fulfilling of your purpose through Jesus Christ Our Lord amen. Oh God you have made of one blood all the peoples of the earth and sent your blessed son to preach peace to those who are far and those who are near. Grant that people everywhere may seek after you, and find you. Bring the nations into your fold, pour out your Spirit on all flesh, and hasten the coming of your kingdom through Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen. And now Lord, make me an instrument of your peace. Where there is hatred let me sow love. Where there is injury, pardon. Where there is doubt, faith. Where there is despair, hope. Where there is darkness, light. And where there is sadness, Joy. Oh Lord grant that I might not seek to be consoled as to console. To be understood as to understand, to be loved as to love. For it is in the giving that we receive, in the pardoning that we are pardoned, it is in the dying that we are born unto eternal life. Amen And now as our Lord has taught us we are bold to pray... Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven, give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our tresspasses as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not unto temptation, but deliver us from evil, for thine is the Kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen. Loving God, we give you thanks for restoring us in your image. And nourishing us with spiritual food, now send us forth as forgiven people, healed and renewed, that we may proclaim your love to the world, and continue in the risen life of Christ. Amen. Rob Hutchinson discusses the importance of dialogue over debate in spiritual discernment, emphasizing humility and openness to different perspectives. Ever feel lost in the maze of biblical scholarship? Fear not, as my colleagues Sarah Hansen, Jason Webb, and I, Stephen Feith, light the way through varying approaches to Bible study and engagement. Sarah dispels the myth of 'right time' Bible study with her eclectic blend of podcasts and casual reading, while Jason draws from his predawn moments of peace, steeped in the Psalms. I share how Jesus' teachings in the Gospels offer a daily compass for my life, illustrating that whether in the quiet dawn or the midst of life's hustle, scripture speaks. But what about the voices around us? Our latest discussion opens the floor to the indispensable role of community in biblical interpretation. Together, we navigate the tightrope between honoring scripture and avoiding its deification, promoting a narrative that invites us into larger conversations rather than ending them. We invite you to consider the beauty of divine communication through arts and expressions beyond the written word, and to engage in a faith that recognizes the presence of God in unexpected places.Dive into history with us as we unpack the canonization of the Bible—a tale of divine inspiration interwoven with human decision-making. We provide reassurance that the core tenets of Christianity stand firm despite the human hands that assembled these sacred texts. The session rounds off with a look at how this process of canonization influences faith communities, including our own at Madison Church in 2024, reminding us of the human touch in our spiritual journey and its significance for believers today. Christian mysticism, often seen as the pursuit of a deeper, more intimate relationship with God, has its roots in the early days of Christianity. Mystics sought to experience God's presence beyond the traditional liturgical practices and doctrinal teachings. They emphasized personal encounters with the divine, often through prayer, meditation, and contemplation. In our modern era, where many feel disconnected due to the fast-paced and technology-driven world, there's a growing movement among Christians to return to these ancient mystical practices. This resurgence is not about discarding the foundational beliefs of Christianity but about deepening one's faith and experiencing God's love and presence in a more profound way. We'll explore how contemporary Christians are integrating mystical practices into their daily lives. From contemplative prayer and Lectio Divina to modern adaptations of ancient rituals, these practices offer a way to slow down, reflect, and connect with God on a deeper level. https://www.theancientwaypodcast.com/ https://www.Seer.SchoolThis show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/4918017/advertisement

In this episode, Rev. Richard Coles, former rock star and vicar turned crime author, discusses his novel Murder at Evensong, St. Guinefort the greyhound, and the meaning of modern faith, while Abir and Vaseem have a rant about the unfolding social crisis in Britain.
One of the biggest lies we tell in church is that everyone has to believe the same thing in the same way in order to be right with God. That's part of the reason a lot of Black people look at African Traditional Religions (aka ATR) with fear and skepticism. We are so often detached from our spiritual heritage because we've been force fed a theology for generations that says anything that doesn't look like Sunday morning at 11 am in the sanctuary of your Christian church must be of the devil. Wrong! Humanity connected to The Divine long before Christianity, long before the Bible, long before Europe set out to colonize the globe. And we are committed to raising the awareness of that reality. Hey there, I'm Kristian A. Smith, the host and the heretic of Holy Smokes; Cigars and Spirituality, the pastor of The Faith Community of Atlanta and the author of Breaking All The Rules: An Ancient Framework for Modern Faith, which serves as a resource for those of you who find yourself on the journey of decolonizing and deconstructing your faith. Welcome to Postseason 6 of Holy Smokes: Cigars & Spirituality. What does that mean? It means we are bringing you some unreleased content and some of our most popular content while the team takes a rest to gear up for season 7. Today, we're diving in to The After Party of Black Women & African Spirituality III. For those who are wondering, yes we are going to record “Black Women & African Spirituality IV next season. In this after-party episode we're taking a deeper look at how people fear ancestor veneration even though we already engage in the practice frequently. And we'll answer a question from one of our live virtual audience members about how you venerate your ancestors when you don't even know who they are. I'm joined in this episode by Pamela Merritt “The Therapist”, Tierney “AT&T” Jordan and our special guest, Pastor Tisha Dixon-Williams. Around these parts she's like royalty, so she's affectionately known as “Her Grace.” Tisha, who is the pastor of The First Baptist Church of Bridgehampton, dropped one of the most profound statements we've ever heard here at Holy Smokes: Cigars & Spirituality when I asked her if she had any advice for people who were interested in exploring African Spirituality. We're going to jump in at the point she answers that question. You'll then hear me close out the official episode before we jump into the after party. So pull up chair and join us as we deconstruct harmful theology and build beloved community one cigar at a time.
When we first started this movement, men were primarily drawn to it because we smoke cigars. As we have had more and more inclusive conversations about gender and sexuality, the ratios are beginning to shift and we have more women who engage Holy Smokes now. I love how the women have plugged in, but it pains me that men run from conversations that hold us accountable for our misogynistic ways. We regularly challenge men to let go of our need to have authority over women and embrace the authority we have over our own lives. So, shout out to the men who aren't afraid to have these, sometimes, uncomfortable conversations. When we invited Danyelle Thomas, aka The Unfit Christian, to the show to talk about Misogyny in the Church, she walked us through some of the ways the church has been harmful to women. In a moment you'll hear Janackeh, one of our Patreon community members, mention how indoctrination can be so strong that we don't even realize how much we are being harmed by it until someone else points it out. I liken it to not realizing that you are holding your breath until someone tells you to breathe. Well in this episode, Danyelle Thomas challenged us to breathe. We originally released the main portion of this conversation with The Unfit Christian on Feb 21 of this year. We talked a little bit about how Misogyny in the Church has affected Danyelle's relationship with the church and with The Divine. Today I invite you to join us for the unreleased After Party of that same episode where we took it a step further to discuss how Misogyny in the Church has affected Danyelle's relationship with herself. In this segment, she raises the question, “How can you date men when you hate men?” which reminds me of a meme from Phaedra Peer that I recently saw on social media which says, “The fact that I'm still attracted to men should prove that sexuality isn't a choice.” That's a good moment to say Happy Pride Month to my Q+ family. Welcome to Postseason 6 of Holy Smokes: Cigars & Spirituality. What does that mean? It means we are bringing you some unreleased content and some of our most popular content while the team takes a rest to gear up for season 7. We're about to jump into the after party of Misogyny in the Church: A Woman's Perspective with Danyelle Thomas, aka Unfit Christian. We'll also be joined at the midway point by Janackeh and Angela from our Patreon community who joined us backstage in the virtual greenroom for this experience. Fair warning, if you're not comfortable with Black people using the term “nigga” this episode will make you cringe. After about 5 minutes of talking with Danyelle, I adopted her as my cousin (cuz that's what Black folks do) and we got real comfortable with our language. Hell I even said at one point that on some subjects I don't give a damn what the Bible says, because I've studied it enough to know that I don't agree with what it says on some matters. Yeah, I know, that's a lot. But it's my story and I'm sticking to it. So how about you just pull up a chair and join us as we deconstruct harmful theology and build beloved community one cigar at a time. Let's get to it.
Here at Holy Smokes we have a lot of interaction before and after we record the podcast episodes. And sometimes the nuggets of wisdom that are shared in those moments are just as impactful as the content we release for the public. Only our Patreon community gets all of the footage. For example, that one time we had Candice Benbow on the podcast we had an extensive dialogue in the pre-show about how people's perceptions of us are not our responsibility. In case you're not familiar with Candice Benbow, she is a public theologian and author of Red Lip Theology: For Colored Girls Who've Considered Tithing to The Beauty Supply Store When Sunday Morning Isn't Enough. While she was with us in the pre-show, we also discussed how people's reactions to her words have a lot to do with how our culture treats women. And when our conversation turned to talking about Jesus, Candice said, “I'm not committed to a sinless savior.” GASP. She gave us so much food for thought that we just had to share it with you. It means we are bringing you some unreleased content and some of our most popular content while the team takes a rest to gear up for season 7. We're about to jump into the pre-show episode from Red Lip Theology featuring Candice Benbow. During this exchange you'll also hear the voices of Myron Randall “The Mystic” and Tierney “AT&T” Jordan. We're going to jump where we discuss how Candice has been accused of taking shots at people on social media. So pull up a chair and join us as we deconstruct harmful theology and build beloved community one cigar at a time. Let's get to it. Intermission Drop You can always count on Myron The Mystic to say something wild and mildly inappropriate. So, like I mentioned earlier this is the pre-show of the Red Lip Theology episode. After Myron took that shot, we addressed some technical issues with the live virtual audience. And then we got right back to it with Candice. And here is where she goes into the conversation about people's need for Jesus to be a sinless savior. Gird your loins. It's about to get heavy in here.
My guest today is Mark Juergensmeyer. Our conversation explores: the spirit of Sant Mat "ecumenism" and dialogue of the historic Spircon conference, the International Seminar on the Religion of Sants -- Radhasoami Faith -- Spiritual Consciousness Studies; also some Sant Mat history speculation on the origins of the Radhasoami Faith: the ashram of the Tulsi Sahib group in Hathras, "the People of the Anurag Sagar" or the "Esoteric Santism" of Sant Dariya Sahib and the Dharamdasi Branch of Kabir Panth. Mark Juergensmeyer is director of the Orfalea Center for Global and International Studies, professor of sociology, and affiliate professor of religious studies at the University of California, Santa Barbara. He is an expert on religious violence, conflict resolution and South Asian religion and politics, and has published more than two hundred articles and twenty books, including, "Radhasoami Reality, The Logic of A Modern Faith", Princeton University Press; "Songs of the Saints of India" (Mystic Poetry of Kabir, Guru Nanak, Ravidas, Mirabai, Sur Das, and Tulsi Das), Oxford University Press; contributed chapters to, "The Sants - Studies in A Devotional Tradition of India", Motilal Banarsidas Books of Delhi. I've always been supportive of the goals of, The Murar Declaration, which lead to the Spircon event: the universal principles of peace, affection, harmony and cooperation as outlined at the Sant Mat conclave known as Spircon 2010, a historic gathering convened in Agra attended by the leadership and representatives of several branches of Sant Mat and Radhasoami lineages: "We are all pilgrims treading the same path and desirous of reaching the same destination ultimately. Satsang movement has been started to spread the true religion and peace and tranquility in the world and to draw people towards the Holy Feet of Huzur Radhasoami Dayal. This object can be better served by maintaining mutual affection and brotherly relations among different Centres of Radhasoami Faith and working in cooperation to attain the common goal 'as the object of worship of everyone is the same (i.e. Merciful Radhasoami) and the Original Home of everyone is the same (i.e. the Abode of Radhasoami) and the real teachers of everyone are the same Bani and Discourses of Merciful Radhasoami, obviously then, all should have amity and heart-felt love and affection for each other.'" In a conversation recorded on May 8, Program Curator Jennifer Maxell talks with Dean Neichelle Guidry of Spelman College's Sisters Chapel about the importance of democratized theology, engaging in the work of justice, and the importance of rest.
In Hebrews chapter 11, we see a list of Heroes of the Faith, like Abraham, David, Deborah and many more. These men and women fixed their eyes on God and refused to be moved from what they knew God was doing with them. Some by faith escaped the edge of the sword, as mentioned in verse 34, but others were put to death by the sword, as in verse 37. This shows that the people mentioned in this faith "Hall of Fame" were those who trusted that God's will for their lives was best. So we see Daniel's faith when he wasn't eaten by lions, but also the faith of the early believers who were thrown to the lions and eaten. Both are inspiring to us.So here in this video, find a modern faith "hall of fame" of heroes who trusted God with their lives in the same way. Some of these like Brother Andrew escaped the clutches of the communist regimes of Eastern Europe, but others like the 21 Coptic Martyrs laid down their lives for Christ and went to their reward.May this quick 2 minutes video inspire you to be a person of trust in God, so that regardless of His will for your life, whether good, or bad, you will serve Him with a whole heart. Let there be no grumbling but rather praising because God is at work in you for His much bigger purpose, and our lives will be joined in praise with those in this video and together we will bring Him much glory.
