Norma Rae (1979) describes the struggle of Norma Rae Webster (Sally Field), a factory worker with limited education, to unionize a textile mill in North Carolina. The film was directed by Martin Ritt from a screenplay by Irving Ravetch and Harriet Frank Jr., and is based on the true story of Crystal Lee Sutton (as told in the 1975 book Crystal Lee, A Woman of Inheritance by New York Times reporter Henry P. Leifermann). Reuben Warshowsky (Ron Leibman), a union organizer from New York City, persuades Norma to help him organize a union. But Norma and Reuben must overcome a series of obstacles, including pressure and harassment from management as well as internal divisions among the textile workers. Norma, moreover, must navigate issues in her personal life, including with her new husband Sonny (Beau Bridges), who resents Norma's growing commitment to the union. Ultimately, Norma succeeds as the workers vote to unionize. The Hoover History held a Book Talk with Melvyn P. Leffler - Confronting Saddam Hussein: George W. Bush and the Invasion of Iraq on Friday, October 27, 2023 at 12:00 PM PT. America's decision to go to war in Iraq in 2003 was highly contentious at the time, and continues to divide opinion severely. In some ways it could be considered the most important foreign policy choice of the so-called post-Cold War era. Melvyn Leffler revisits this episode armed with a unique set of personal interviews with dozens of top officials as well as a wealth of declassified American and British documents. The new documentation is extraordinary, and Leffler vividly recaptures the emotions and anxieties that shaped the thinking of the president after the shock of 9/11 – hubris, yes, but also fear, and responsibility to protect the homeland amid uncertainty. Writer and broadcaster Melvyn Bragg is a prolific and bestselling author, having written 22 novels, many set in the Cumbrian communities in which he grew up. He has also written 18 works of historical non-fiction and biographies. As host and editor of ITV's South Bank Show for nearly 35 years, presenter dozens of documentaries, and Radio 4 series including Start The Week and In Our Time he is synonymous with arts broadcasting in the UK. He was ennobled in 1998, taking his seat in the House of Lords as Baron Bragg of Wigton in Cumbria. In conversation with John Wilson, Melvyn Bragg recalls his working class childhood and how the local library offered him access to literature at a young age. A voracious reader and talented student, Melvyn was inspired by two teachers at his grammar school, and won a scholarship to Oxford University. It was there that he met his first wife Lisa Roche, who he chooses as a major influence having encouraged Melvyn to pursue his creativity. He discusses the grief and depression he suffered after Lisa's suicide ten years into their marriage. Winning a place on a BBC production trainee scheme in 1961 was another major turning point in his cultural life, working alongside writers including Irish poet Louis MacNeice at the very start of his six decade career in arts broadcasting. Javier convinces Mel that the restaurant should stage “A Chorus Line” as a way to attract Frank Sinatra and other celebrities to Melvyn's. When Mel hires an event planner (Nicole Sullivan) to bring in A-List stars, she leads him along with false promises. After being alerted that that they do not have permission to put on the show, a cast of drag queens arrive and attempt to save the big night.  

A bad review of Melvyn's restaurant by Dave Atchison (Justin Tranter) sends Mel into a tailspin as he wonders aloud how it happened. Looking to bring new positive publicity to the hotel, he goes into the old basement to track down past celebrity guest cards. Meanwhile, Javier (Brian Jordan Alvarez) and Harry (Lance Bass) attend a party where Liberace is performing.
