Legendary maître d' Brian Ellis pulls back the velvet rope on five decades at Melvyn's and the Ingleside Inn, where stars, moguls, and locals mixed like martinis as he opens up on this episode of Big Conversations, Little Bar with Patrick Evans and Randy Florence from the corner booth at Skip Paige's Little Bar in Palm Desert.. From overbooked New Year's Eves to Sinatra's rehearsal dinner, Ellis recounts how front-of-house finesse, unflappable charm, and a well-timed “wave” could turn chaos into magic. He remembers iconic entertainers like Nino Fontana, explains why the Sunday Jam became a civic ritual, and shares why Mel Haber's old-school rules kept the lights glowing and the legends returning. Ellis also reveals the craft behind saying yes to special requests, the rare moments that warranted an 86, and the human kindness that happened off the record. Finally, he updates us on life at Hotel Paseo and his forthcoming memoir packed with signatures, photos, and jaw-dropping tales. It's a sparkling masterclass in hospitality, Palm Springs history, and the art of making every guest feel like a headliner.Takeaways:Five decades at Melvyn's made Ellis the ultimate Palm Springs gatekeeper.Sinatra's rehearsal dinner at Melvyn's put the venue on the map.Sunday Jam crowds became a valley ritual requiring deft crowd management.Mel Haber's “say yes” ethos—and selective 86ing—shaped service culture.Nino Fontana's showmanship (and breaks!) inspired unforgettable lounge lore.Quiet philanthropy surfaced in stories of kindness from famous patrons.Classic tableside dishes and upselling sustained quality and profitability.Ellis now brings that front-of-house magic to Hotel Paseo—and to his memoir.#BigConversationsLittleBarPodcast #PatrickEvans #RandyFlorence #SkipsLittleBar #MutualBroadcastingSystem #CoachellaValleyResidents #SkipPaige #BrianEllis #MelvynsPalmSprings #InglesideInn #PalmSprings #MelHaber #FrankSinatra #NinoFontana #SundayJam #HotelPaseo #McCallumTheatre #CelebrityStories #RestaurantLife #MaitreD
In today's episode, Jordan sits down with Melvyn Downes, former British SAS soldier, author, and motivational speaker. Melvyn shares an extraordinary journey from growing up on one of Europe's largest council estates to serving over two decades in the British military, including twelve years in the SAS. He opens up about facing racism as a young boy in Stoke-on-Trent, the lessons his Jamaican father taught him about resilience and standing up for himself, and how those experiences shaped his determination to succeed. Melvyn talks about the harsh realities of military life, from the fear of combat in Northern Ireland and the Gulf War to the grueling SAS selection process that tests every limit of the human body and mind. Throughout, he reflects on leadership, discipline, and the power of perseverance, reminding listeners that true strength comes from refusing to quit, no matter how hard the mission. The first episode in a new series of Feedback, presented by Andrea Catherwood.A recent edition of File on 4 Investigates went inside the migrant hotels at the centre of anti-immigration protests in England to talk to residents about their experiences. But listeners were divided in what they thought of the documentary. The journalist who made programme, Sue Mitchell, joins Andrea to answer your comments and questions. While Feedback was off air we heard the news that veteran presenter Melvyn Bragg would be stepping down from presenting In Our Time after 27 years at the programme's helm. You've been suggesting your favourite names to take over - and we talk to radio critic Simon O'Hagan about the end of Melvyn's reign. And Radio 3 took the time to celebrate 200 years of the birth of the modern railway recently. There was a day of specially scheduled programming - Train Tracks, in which listeners heard Petroc Trelawney travelling from Inverness to London by train in the company of other Radio 3 presenters, soundtracked by themed playlists. We have a broadcasting legend for you today on Rosebud, as Gyles interviews the creator and host of In Our Time and The South Bank Show, Melvyn Bragg, Lord Bragg of Wigton. Melvyn takes Gyles back to his roots in Wigton, a small town in Cumbria, in which his parents ran one of the local pubs, and the young Bragg played all day long in the streets, making bows and arrows from trees overhanging the river. He tells Gyles about his schooldays, the brilliant teachers who guided him and there's a really interesting discussion of the unexpected mental health problems he had as a teenager. He takes us to Oxford University, where he fell in love with cinema, and was encouraged to apply for a BBC traineeship. And we hear about some of the landmark interviews of his career, with Francis Bacon and Paul McCartney. But its Bragg's evocation of his working class childhood which will really stay with you - this is a journey to a special time and place which no longer really exists. Hosted on Acast. "War on Waste"Keeping Ennerdale Clean and Safe for Our Children: Melvyn Petersen by Radio Islam
What if our bitter political divisions aren't just about policy differences but reflect ancient biological drives hardwired into our DNA? Dr. Melvyn Lurie, Harvard-trained psychiatrist with expertise in genetics, presents a groundbreaking framework for understanding America's current crisis through evolutionary biology.Drawing from his observation of nesting species and historical civilizations, Dr. Lurie identifies two fundamental drives shaping human societies: survival drives (focused on resource acquisition and protection) and reproductive drives (centered on nurturing the vulnerable). When a civilization becomes successful, it naturally shifts from survival orientation toward reproductive concerns – a transition Dr. Lurie believes marks America's current precarious position. This biological perspective illuminates why our politics feels so intractable. Those facing economic uncertainty naturally prioritize survival needs, while those with greater security gravitate toward care for the vulnerable. Neither side recognizes these as biological imperatives requiring balance, leading to wild oscillations between administrations rather than healthy equilibrium.Rome provides a sobering parallel – a civilization that could once mobilize massive armies against Hannibal couldn't defend itself against barbarians centuries later as its survival orientation diminished. Dr. Lurie sees America approaching a similar tipping point as we reach the 200-250 year mark that typically signals civilizational decline.Yet hope remains if we can recognize these drives for what they are. By developing a new vocabulary that acknowledges both orientations as legitimate and necessary, we might escape the tribal "Red Sox versus Yankees" mentality currently gripping our discourse. As Dr. Lurie explains, "Once people understand what's really going on, things go right."Join us for this fascinating exploration of the biology behind our political moment and discover how evolutionary science might hold the key to preserving American democracy for generations to come. You can visit his website here: https://melvynlurie.com/Send us a text Musis by Bitterlake, Used with Permission, all rights to BitterlakeSupport the showCrew:Host: C. As the commercial director of one of Hogan's top international distributors at APS, few people in the world of Hogan know more about this topic than Melvyn.

Palm Springs is a must-visit for cinephiles, history buffs, adventure seekers, architecture enthusiasts and foodies, but this desert city is better known as the home of glitz and glamour. Today, we are stepping back in time to when Palm Springs was Hollywood's favorite hideaway, when mid-century architecture shaped the town and suavely clad folk sipped martinis by the pool. In this episode, we're going to visit Frank Sinatra (or his house and favorite restaurant at least), tour the Shag House with Shag himself, meet Barbie and Elvis for dinner and craft cocktails with Palm Springs very own Mr Tiki. When life handed me an unexpected journey into fatherhood, it redefined my understanding of love and purpose. It's these profound shifts in identity and the pursuit of self-realisation that I discuss with Melvyn, the visionary behind the Mind Body Spirit Festivals and a mentor at Living Meditation. Together, we traverse the terrain of spirituality, how it intertwines with the roles we play, and the importance of finding a path that reflects our deepest values. Melvyn shares his transition to Krishna Bhakti and we consider how spiritual mentorship can illuminate the quest for a fulfilled life. The vibrancy of spirituality doesn't just resonate in quiet meditation rooms; it's in the laughter of our children and the wisdom of our daily routines. In a heartwarming exchange, we reflect on the evolution of parenting and spirituality across generations, sharing personal stories that highlight the power of surpassing past conditioning. We examine the beauty of diversity in spiritual practices and how they can cultivate a deeper connection with the divine, within the context of our modern world. Norma Rae (1979) describes the struggle of Norma Rae Webster (Sally Field), a factory worker with limited education, to unionize a textile mill in North Carolina. The film was directed by Martin Ritt from a screenplay by Irving Ravetch and Harriet Frank Jr., and is based on the true story of Crystal Lee Sutton (as told in the 1975 book Crystal Lee, A Woman of Inheritance by New York Times reporter Henry P. Leifermann). Reuben Warshowsky (Ron Leibman), a union organizer from New York City, persuades Norma to help him organize a union. But Norma and Reuben must overcome a series of obstacles, including pressure and harassment from management as well as internal divisions among the textile workers. Norma, moreover, must navigate issues in her personal life, including with her new husband Sonny (Beau Bridges), who resents Norma's growing commitment to the union. Ultimately, Norma succeeds as the workers vote to unionize. The film offers a snapshot of the labor movement on the cusp of the Reagan era in American and features a memorable, Oscar-winning performance by Sally Field in the title role. My guest is Fred B. Jacob, Solicitor of the National Labor Relations Board and labor law professor at George Washington University Law School.
