They discuss the inception of a disciple making movement, the structure and impact of the Recruits program, and the importance of relationships in discipleship. In this episode Gareth shares his journey in church leadership, discussing his early experiences, challenges, and the evolution of his approach to leading a church how understanding our call to release God's purpose in people has led to him creating environments for personal growth for all as disciples - shifting from large gatherings to more intimate, accountable groups where we coach and ask questions more than give answers. Church Leadership Journeys and Challenges Gareth shared his early passion for leading a church, starting at age 13, and how he became a senior leader at 22. He also talked about the challenges and opportunities that came with leading a church, including a significant shift in vision around 2006-2007, which led to building a new church on a business park. Gareth then discusses his journey of discovery, exploring how to unlock the potential of a church in a society that seemed to have turned its back on it. This led to the creation of a multi-site model with several locations. Gareth then further reflected on the potential that still remained to be tapped into. Gareth's Leadership Journey and Bible College Anthony and Gareth discussed Gareth's transition into a senior leadership position and his experiences with his father and Bible college. Gareth noted that the practical application of his learning was crucial, and that the apprenticeship model was integral to his development. Gareth also expressed his appreciation for working with his father, highlighting the positive aspects of their collaboration. Leadership and Change Management Strategies Gareth discussed his approach to leadership, emphasizing the importance of understanding different perspectives and approaches. He shared his experience of working with his father and father-in-law, highlighting the need to respect and understand different generations and approaches. Gareth also touched on the challenges of leading a church through significant changes, such as selling a building and moving to a warehouse. He stressed the importance of having a clear vision and understanding the reasons behind these changes. Anthony sought Gareth's advice on how to lead people through such changes, and Gareth emphasized the need for a strong vision and understanding of the reasons behind the changes. Gareth's Vision for Church Growth Gareth shared his personal experience of a moment of clarity that led him to envision a change in the church he was leading. He emphasized the importance of honoring the past while tilting towards the future and the next generation. He also discussed the transition of the church's name from its original name to "Everyday Champions" in 2006, and subsequent expansions to different locations. Anthony agreed with Gareth's points, referencing a quote from Alan Hirsch about honoring generations. Decentralizing Church Model for Growth Anthony and Gareth discussed the evolution of their church's model from a traditional, geographically-based structure to a more decentralized, technology-driven approach. They acknowledged the importance of proximity of leaders in maintaining the initial model, but also recognized the need for change as they sought to reach a wider audience. Gareth shared their experience of opening a mobile coffee space in Greenwich, which allowed them to listen to and engage with people who weren't attending church. This shift in approach led to a better understanding of the questions people were asking, which differed from those addressed in the traditional model. The conversation ended with Gareth suggesting that their new model was akin to building a factory for the future, while still maintaining the existing structure. Purpose, Discipleship, and Human Nature Gareth and Anthony discussed the concept of purpose and its relation to the church and individual beliefs. Gareth emphasized the importance of understanding the individual's purpose rather than fitting them into a precast mold. He also highlighted the role of discipleship in this process, suggesting that people have the answers within them but need an environment to allow these answers to emerge. Anthony raised a theological question about the fallen nature of humanity and the potential for self-deception. Gareth agreed, noting that there are competing seeds within individuals, and the goal is to create an environment where the seed of vision can grow. The conversation concluded with Gareth acknowledging that this transition is ongoing and has been a significant shift in his perspective. Shift to Intimate Conversations and Content Gareth discussed the shift in their model from focusing on large crowds to smaller, more intimate groups. He emphasized the importance of one-to-one conversations in unlocking potential, citing Jesus' example. Gareth also explained their new approach, where content is digitally driven and can be accessed at any time, with groups meeting in various locations. He stressed the need for environments where people can't hide and emphasized the role of leaders in equipping the saints for works of service. Anthony agreed with Gareth's points, noting the importance of personal relationships and the exposure of hidden issues in larger crowds. Accountability and Coaching in Church Model Gareth and Anthony discussed the importance of accountability and evaluation in their church model, contrasting it with the traditional "come and see" approach. They emphasized the need for individuals to set goals and seek change, with Gareth suggesting a simple ABC framework for awareness, barrier, and change. Anthony agreed, noting the need for more engaging questions in their discussions. They also discussed the role of coaching in their approach, with Gareth highlighting the importance of drawing out what's inside people rather than just pouring in information. Anthony expressed interest in Gareth's coaching methods and invited him to join a future podcast and launch event. Gareth agreed and encouraged listeners to consider the size of their vision and the potential for change. Legacy, Contribution, and God's Presence Gareth challenged the participants to consider their legacy and how they can contribute positively to the world in the next 500 years. He emphasized the importance of going beyond personal interests and contributing to the greater good. Gareth also encouraged the participants to connect with him on social media platforms and to seek a deeper understanding of God. He ended the conversation with a prayer, asking for forgiveness and guidance in expanding their awareness of God's presence and purpose in their lives.
In this episode, we explore the origins and mission of Steiger, a radical international missionary movement that began with a punk priest in Amsterdam reaching ‘lost sheep.' Steiger emphasizes the power of preaching the cross through creative and visual methods and has grown into a global movement. The discussion delves into the challenges of communicating truth in a world shaped by the “Macdonaldisation of the Church” and the complex landscape of global youth culture. We tackle the confusion of identity in today's society, exacerbated by secular humanism and the isolating mantra of “my truth,” which have contributed to a world filled with loneliness, confusion, anxiety, and brokenness. Key topics include: •Engaging a post-Christian, overcrowded context with creativity and authenticity •Having spiritual conversations in a skeptical age •The necessity of focusing on Jesus rather than relying on “big names” •The Send as a means to mobilize a movement and this year's LAUNCH event, which aims to equip and release leaders like never before Inspiring stories from Oslo and Saudi Arabia illustrate how a holy discontent can fuel transformative action. Preparing for the Upcoming Launch Event Anthony and Ness discussed the upcoming LAUNCH event in June, with Ness expressing her excitement to be part of it. Anthony revealed the list of speakers, including Chip Ingram, Aaron Pierce and many others, for what they believe will be an important of gathering in preparing the church for the future. Paul Lloyd with his wife Vicky leads Victory Outreach Church in Salford and they travel globally as part of that incredible ministry. He had a background in combat sports but after an injury in his teens he fell into depression which took him into the world of Eastend and Essex gangs, heroin addiction and crime. He talks with ex-cop Anthony about why people get addicted and how at 27 years of age he was set free by Jesus Christ after in his hour of need a prizefighter friend told him the good news. Their time together is profoundly hopeful as Paul describes the hopelessness of atheism and scientism to change lives for good, and why “the church must not just bring a message of lifestyle change, but life exchange!” It just gets better after that bit - so cut out an hour for this fantastic, humorous episode and help us share the hope by liking, reviewing, sharing and subscribing. Steve Small is passionate about Jesus and mission, especially in our urban estates and schemes. Steve is part of the staff team at Ivy Church leading us on deployment for mission. He has three young boys and is married to Sarah and together they head up the Eden Network for the Message Trust. Anthony says... “When I first came back to Manchester, Steve was one of the first people I met at Ivy Church where he had been a member for some years. From day one, the way he's always shone is through servanthood. Anyone who knows Steve will tell you he epitomises the phrase ‘servant leadership', always first to step up and bless others somehow. That kind of leadership is all too rare and that's why at Ivy we have a phrase that we all want to ‘Be More Steve.' God gives grace to the humble and I know you'll enjoy learning about the call and journey of Steve's life and ministry to where together with Sarah he now leads the Eden Network, going to the places of greatest need, where the church is in deepest decline, urban missionaries are raised up to live sacrificially, share Jesus joyfully, and build true community.”

In this wide ranging discussion we learn about Mary's life and call which has led her to not only study theology but live out her faith in numerous challenging and faith stretching environments and roles in various parts of the world. Anthony says, “I'm sure you are going to enjoy this one as much as I did! It was great to pick Mary's brain about her time working with some very broken people in tough places, her heart for the supernatural and prophetic to be the church's norm for ministry and her infectious enthusiasm that theology be accessible for everyone to help us learn to love and lead better.” Check out WTC Here: https://wtctheology.org.uk/ And their events page here: https://wtctheology.org.uk/events/

My friend Patrick O'Connell is the Global Director of NewThing, the network which I and Ivy Church are privileged to be part of, which exists to partner with movement makers and catalyse reproducing disciples, leaders, churches, networks, and movements. Here he tells the story of how he came to faith, having met his wife in a punk rock mosh pit, joined the army, he went into business and while finally successful in worldly terms when he finally after 4 years accepted an invitation to go to church and everything changed! He went from church goer to church planter, now serving thousands of church leaders and planters worldwide through NewThing's dream - to see a church planted in every community around the world. We discuss, among other things - How might we help connect people far from God so they don't just learn to cope, but receive hope. What army life taught him about teams and sacrifice, and how that applies to the army of God and ministry ‘in the blood and the mud.' How do we collaborate and form networks that are all about the Kingdom not our own castles? The 4 Rs of NewThing Relationships Doing this alone is next to impossible, so we have intentional rhythms for being friends on mission together. Reproducing From disciples to leaders, churches to networks, creating and catalysing reproducing movements is at the centre of everything we do at NewThing. Residency This is what NewThing churches call our commitment to train and invest in the next generation of church planters, creating apprenticing pipelines for future church planting. Resources Networks pool their people, pennies, and platform to plant church planting churches together. Come along to launchcatalyst.org and connect in person with NewThing so you're not isolated and frustrated but encouraged and celebrated for all you're doing for the Kingdom!
I met Julian Richards at a wedding recently, and as we chatted immediately he felt like 'a brother from the same Father...'! He's the National Leader for New Wine Cymru (that means Wales in case anyone wonders), working together with over 700 other churches to collectively and collaboratively grow to help leaders develop healthy churches to win the nation. With his wife Sarah he leads Cornerstone, a high impact church they founded in 1991 Swansea with a handful of young people in one of the most deprived areas of the city. Today this thriving church is known across Wales for its community work, people finding Christ regularly and many physical healings. In 2014 they opened Venue2, a former supermarket, as a second Cornerstone site, which is where I met him. Julian co-founded Gweini (meaning ‘to serve' in Welsh), representing Christian, faith-based community work to the Welsh Assembly Government and wider society. He tells the story as we meet of how from very small beginnings but a commitment to missional growth and effectiveness, many other churches and ministries have been birthed, leaders equipped and local communities transformed through the power of Christ and his kingdom. This is a story of miraculous provision and remarkable spiritual openness in our culture that they are seeing more than ever (3700 people prayed to receive Christ in 9 days), but Julian is convinced the answer for Wales (and everywhere else) is NOT for 'another Welsh Revival' dropped down from above, but by disciples faithfully serving, loving and winning their neighbours and nation for Christ. We discuss; How what you learn as a skint church planter can set you up for a life of faith and impact rather than having it all set up in advance. What Bible college never taught you about faith. The difference between optimism and faith. Why we need courage as well as faith! Why we need to change our model of mission and ministry. New Wine Cymru - how it's similar and different to New Wine in England and elsewhere, as a non government collaborative model for effective mission. Connect with Julian - https://newwinecymru.co.uk/about/whos-who Or via: https://www.cornerstonechurch.co.uk Julian is going to join us at https://www.launchcatalyst.org and it's not too late for you and your friends and team to book in and join us too whether in the North or the South of England.
I met Chris Wickland last year when he came as one of the guest speakers at a leader's retreat. I'll never forget his incredible story of how he went from witchcraft to Christ. Having been aware of the supernatural realm and its realities more than most, Chris described seeing and hearing visions and dreams which have led to him publicly declaring major words regarding the church and the nations ahead of time. These include the rise and fall of various political leaders, Church closures across the world (publicly declared April 2019) to humble the church, providing insight to governments re natural disasters, and predicting economic upheavals and collapse both present and to come; However as a Pastor-Prophet Chris says he always wants to bring hope not fear, so God's people can be ready! As we talk I learn more about his story, his life (and deaths), hearing about how he was saved from a suicide attempt when as a new Christian he drove his car off a cliff, and how he has died and been resurrected (not just once, but twice!) I met today's guest when I overheard him in a coffee queue sharing in a very understated way how miracles started happening more and more, when he actually started praying for them! "I'd never seen a blind person see, but now it's happened quite a lot." I rather rudely interrupted - desperate to find out more, and if you are too you'll love to meet Thomas. He will be joining us at LAUNCHCATALYST.ORG this year (Starts at the end of October into November don't miss it) but here we discuss issues such as: Seeing the supernatural as a natural part of life Praying for friends and people in our neighbourhood How his church plant, due to start just as Covid kicked in, ended up making global news bringing hope instead of stalling or stopping. How our theology might unintentionally rule out the power of God operating in our churches, and how to steward those times when the Spirit is moving. Find out more and connect with Thomas at https://aabenkirkekbh.dk/english
EVERYONE, EVERYWHERE, KNOWING JESUS. Well talk about a big vision! How can it become a reality? Dr Rachel Jordan-Wolf will be joining us at this year's LAUNCH (See launchcataylst.org for the best deal available for you and your team. Rachel is executive director of HOPE Together in the UK, having worked closely with the initiative since 2010, when she was the Church of England's National Mission and Evangelism Advisor, and this episode is FULL of encouragement that you may not be aware of, and doesn't tend to get spoken about anywhere near enough. “I'm committed to evangelism being at the heart of the church,' says Rachel, “Committed to mission and to the local church in villages, towns and cities, and committed to do this together across denominations and across ethnicities to make Jesus known with words and action. We are also committed to a new generation, engaging with Millennials and with digital culture as well. You'll hear how as well as being an expert on the stats and demographics from surveys she has commissioned we can have a great deal of hope for the future church. Rachel as a passionate evangelist herself is seeing God move in exciting ways as she personally finds opportunities because people are way more ready to hear the good news of the gospel than most Christians are to pass it on! This podcast serves to help you to do that, and help others to do so too - so please rate it, share and subscribe, and connect with Rachel in person at LAUNCH or at hopetogether.org.uk and please check out talkingjesus.org to not only be encouraged but equipped!

How a new leader coming into the Body is like a heart transplant How to create an irresistible workplace What is culture - really? What makes a place healthy or toxic? What's 'you're kind of crazy' and how defining that helps with attracting and retaining team.

"Three wheelchairs were left on the streets of Leicester, people healed and saved, wonderful things happening! We are at the verge of a great move of God that is more out there than what is with in the four walls of our church… We have found a 30 to 40% increase of people wanting to know about Jesus!” Are we seeing the end of the powerless church - while at the same time the Lord is raising up a new move, doing extraordinary things through ordinary people? Join this thrilling conversation with Jonathan Conrathe, Founder and Director of Mission24, an inter-denominational ministry to equip the Church and reach the world for Christ. The Lord has used the ministry to see over 264,500 people come to Christ over the last 32 years in 54 countries, while equipping 1000's of believers to minister the Gospel ‘with signs following.' Are such ‘signs and wonders' really for today? Should we expect to see miracles? Are there ‘qualifications' for that? 3 levels of FAITH. Is healing really for today? 3 components of prayer for healing.

This is Part 1 of a conversation with Keri Ladouceur, a pastor in Naperville, Illinois and founder and lead coach at New Ground Network. The conversation Anthony had with Keri touched on so many important points and is therefore split into two episodes. In this first episode they speak about what it means to establish goodness cultures that truly mean that what we are multiplying is the the culture of the Kingdom. In this first part of the conversation, Anthony and Keri also speak about abuses of power, the need for persuasive arguments for people but equally the need to create safe spaces for people to wrestle with their faith and contend with their own questions and meet with the Holy Spirit as they enter and grow in their relationship with Jesus. Be sure to subscribe to the podcast for Part 2 of this conversation also coming next week where they dig deeper into these points and much more. Keri will be speaking at LAUNCH RE:PLANT in Wigan on October 3rd and 4th this year. Don't miss out on this event it will be BRILLIANT! James Ray is the UK leader of XCC, the 'Xtreme Character Challenge' which takes men on mind, body, soul adventures. Anthony and around 30 men from Ivy Church went to Scotland on one of these 72 hour events in Scotland. Anthony says in this episode that the XCC was the most significant spiritual experience he has had personally in the last 20 years of ministry, a sentiment echoed by all of the Ivy men that went and thousands of others that have taken part over the years. Listen to this conversation to hear about an event that has been radically significant for Anthony and for incredible stories and lessons about what it means to be a man, new ways to think about mens ministry and the benefit of embracing discomfort and finding radical community with others. XCC was one way that some guys at Ivy Church in Manchester helped go deeper in community, as James says - its an option! Why not check it out! There is also an event for women, Arise, that follows a similar outline (though I - Joel - have only been on an XCC so don't know details!) which you can check out here.
This conversation touches on much of what we'll be diving into at LAUNCH RE:PLANT in October. Steve Uppal (All Nations Movement) will be one of the speakers joining us there and we're excited to be able to share this conversation with Anthony with you today. This episode dives into the struggles leaders face when they're truly pioneering new things, the importance and opportunities present when we do so and ways of coping with those struggles in the right ways, devoting more time to prayer and friendships and relationships. There is a lot in this conversation and we're excited to hear more from him at LAUNCH later this year. You can get an extra 10% discount for that event when you use the code 'FUTURECHURCH' at checkout. Head to launchcatalyst.org to secure tickets for you and your team.
Tim Nelson is the CEO of Hope For Justice and joins Anthony to speak about their mission of Ending Slavery and Changing Lives. Tim delves into the depth and scale of the problem and will help open your eyes to it before discussing with Anthony how important it is to start small in communities, ways to build bridges into communities and how Churches can be 'relevant' by meeting needs. Tim also lets Anthony know why he collects Ginger Beer bottles. Listen and subscribe for conversations like this every month. ----------------------------------------------------- Be sure to book your place at LAUNCH RE:PLANT on the 3rd and 4th of October at 'The Edge' in Wigan - https://www.launchcatalyst.org/
Professor Andrew Sherry is Chair of Materials and Structures at the Henry Royce Institute for Advanced Materials at the University of Manchester and was formerly the Chief Scientist at the National Nuclear Laboratory. He has also launched the 'Becoming Me' programme and runs the 'Are We Nearly There Yet' podcast (see @awnty), both of which aim to help people embrace who they are, flourish at what they do and thrive in making a difference. Andrew was also the Head Elder at Ivy Church when Anthony Delaney started at the Church and has been a good friend for many years. This conversation covers many topics and centres around Andrew's work helping people through the new Becoming Me programme, what he's learnt from the process and how those lessons can be applied to the church. Andrew has had much success in academia and has significant influence but has always remained committed to the church and seeing it flourish and we're glad to share this conversation with you. This conversation also touches on nuclear reactors and cigar-box guitars.
How do we plant churches that are worth reproducing? Josh in this conversation describes the vehicles that we have used, which have too often been unsuited for the journeys we have wanted to go on. Instead, he encourages us to avoid rebuilding systems out of comfort if they weren't meeting the aims of a true kingdom cultured church and reproducing sold-out disciples? Many people in churches are asking 'is there more to the Christian life than this?' and the answer is yes! Jesus sets a high standard for discipleship, higher than we often do - and he calls it a good deal! Hear from Josh and Anthony in this episode a variety of challenging calls and encouraging stories. If you're listening it's because you're passionate about Jesus, the church and reaching new people in new ways, this conversation will remind you of the high call for discipleship and start a series of conversations that will begin to investigate what it looks like to make disciples that make disciples and plant churches with healthy kingdom cultures that are worth reproducing.

Here Anthony speaks with Emma Stark from Glasgow Prophetic Centre. Emma has a prophetic gift to the nations and strong insight that is incredibly valuable for anyone involved in Church. Anthony starts by mentioning how friendship and connection with Emma and GPC has been such a help to his leadership in the last couple of years before going into conversation on what we mean by the prophetic ministry, some of Emma's background before moving into a wide-ranging conversation touching on the role of APEST in the Church, taking risks and an overall call to leaders to become amateurs in the new rather than experts in the old. Emma is a powerful communicator and will challenge you but we know that as you listen that you'll also come away inspired and encouraged to chase the mission and the call that God has for you. Emma and Glasgow Prophetic Centre also have a brilliant online presence and you can follow them at these links - Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/glasgowpropheticcentre YouTube - https://www.youtube.com/user/propheticscots Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/emmafaithstark
Here Anthony speaks with Dr. James Emery White, Senior Pastor and Founder of Mecklenburgh Community Church in Charlotte, North Carolina; president of Serious Time, Inc., which is host to the ChurchandCulture.org website. He is also ranked adjunct professor of theology and culture at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary and is the author of more than twenty books that have been translated into ten languages. Some of his books include; This conversation has so much practical wisdom, diving into the history of the church and the christian faith and where we find ourselves at this point, as well as a lot of discussion and ideas around the importance of this moment in terms of leaning into the digital revolution as churches. Dr. White also reminds us that God has entrusted us with this time, with a call not to waste this crisis but to allow it to shake us, change us and transform our churches and ministries the way He wants. Josh - "Jesus wasn't saying build your life on me and not on other things. His only example that He used was that the wise man was him who heard the word and put it into practice. And the foolish man was the guy who heard and did nothing. So they both heard, but only one of them actually put it into practice. So a lot of times unintentionally in education or even in the church, we design it in such a way that we create foolish builders rather than wise builders. We let them hear the word and never expect them to do anything with it". Here Anthony speaks with Josh Howard from CICM, Central India Christian Mission, which before Covid-19 was seeing +/- 600,000 people in 3,300 CICM churches across India. But the story is even greater than that. Within this, Josh heads up Ignite, a ministry that trains and equips their church planters, to go to places no one has been with the gospel and reach individuals in one of the most unreached parts of the world. Realising that addition would not accomplish the mission, they set out on a journey to multiplication of leaders and churches. Since making the shift to a multiplication mindset 6 years ago, they've planted about 4,000 new house churches started. Even more incredibly, in 2020 in the midst of the pandemic, they've planted 675 churches. This is not a conversation to miss and one to share with other leaders and your teams to be encouraged by and to help shift your thinking to multiplication and to help you develop passionate and active disciples in your community.
Ness Wilson [https://pioneer.org.uk/] and [https://www.openheaven.org/] joins Anthony in this episode for a conversation where they look at some of her story and background and what God is doing in the church today. Much of this conversation relies on a life verse for Ness, 2 Timothy 4:5 - "but you, keep your head in all situations, endure hardship, do the work of an evangelist, discharge all the duties of your ministry". This is arguably not the kind of verse one may ask for but Ness shares powerfully about how it has informed her life and ministry and has helped her navigate some really tough times. You'll hear also a lot of guidance and some brilliant ideas from Ness about what the church ought to be focussed on in this time and looking forward to.
