Listen to an interview with legendary jazz saxophonist and composer Gary Bartz. Bartz has performed with Charles Mingus, Max Roach, Art Blakey, and McCoy Tyner. In 1970, Bartz joined Miles Davis' band, contributing to the seminal Live-Evil sessions. But its Bartz work as a bandleader during the 1970s that cemented his reputation as a jazz icon, from his recordings with the Mizell Brothers, to performances with his group Ntu Troop. A two-time Grammy Award winner, Bartz was recently named an NEA Jazz Master by the National Endowment for the Arts.

Given the recent release & fanfare surrounding the remixed and remasterized 40th anniversary edition of LIVE EVIL, the “first official” live album from metal founding fathers BLACK SABBATH and the last official album to feature RONNIE JAMES DIO on vocals (until 1992 anyway), we felt obliged to share our own personal experiences regarding LIVE EVIL, from our first listen until now. With a setlist including a balanced mix of classic Ozzy era tracks blended with the more recent Dio era tracks from MOB RULES & HEAVEN AND HELL, it's certainly a live album that any fan of Black Sabbath, Ronnie James Dio, and/or live concert albums in general, should have in their collection. Being that this is a “LIVE DIVE”, this episode is definitely BIG. Prepare to discover what might just be “the perfect beer” and understand that there's definitely a BIG difference between “Brewering and Breuering”. Get ready to “poon the peen” as you bear witness to the latest collab between “Ron Jeremy and Sammy Hagar” and find out how little it takes to entertain us in a BIG way. Call up your “fluff person” for some BIG “bonus hole” maintenance and JOIN US in the Bunkerpoon as we reflect on 40 years of LIVE EVIL from the mighty and powerful (and also BIG) BLACK SABBATH. When Adam and Eve sinned in the Garden of Eden, they introduced evil into the makeup of all mankind. God desires for us to live in the way He intended, but we can only do that by repenting of our own sinfulness and living in obedience to Him. The only good that can be found in us is through Jesus Christ.
When Adam and Eve sinned in the Garden of Eden, they brought evil into the makeup of all mankind. Repertorio: 1. Miles Davis - Inamorata... (fragmento) (Live Evil) 2. Volker Kriegel - Zoom (Spectrum) 3. Herbie Hancock - Ostinato (Mwandishi) 4. Harry Beckett - Harambee (Warm Smiles) 5. Carla Bley - End Of Rawalpindi (Scalator Over The Hill) 6. John Taylor - White Magic (Pause, and Think Again) 7. Mahavishnu Orchestra - Dance Of Maya (The Inner Mountain Flame) 8. Weather Report - Tears (Weather Report) 9. Pharoah Sanders - Astral Travelling (Thembi) 10. John Surman/John Warren - With Terry's Help (Tales Of Algonquin)

Gary Bartz is one of the greatest saxophonists from a golden generation in Jazz. He's played with jazz luminaries such as Art Blakey, Max Roach, Eric Dolphy, McCoy Tyner, Keith Jarrett and the great Miles Davis. It is a great privilege to welcome him to Love You Live this week discussing his life and his pivotal live music experiences. A consummate performer himself, Bartz is widely recognised as one of the strongest soloists on Miles Davis' “Live - Evil” and the recording of his band's performance at the Montreux Jazz Festival in 1973 has gone down in history; released in 2003 as “I've Known Rivers and Other Bodies”. As a result of his work with so many legends of the jazz world and his ability to blend jazz with alternative styles and social and political messages, Bartz holds a huge amount of resonance with hip-hop and dance music communities to this day. Listen now to hear Gary Bartz discuss his perspective on the forces shaping modern music, how his politics intertwine with his musical ideas and what made that night at Montreux in 1973 so special. Listen all the way to the end to hear trumpeter Theo Croker discuss the influence that Bartz has had on him as a mentor.
Se graban Bitches Brew (1970), Live-Evil (1971) y On the Corner (1972).

Young Southpaw talks to phenomenal Norwegian guitarist Hedvig Mollestad about her new record Ekhidna, opening for John McLaughlin while six months pregnant and having just had appendix surgery, snakes, Eddie Van Halen, Alex Lifeson, and much more. https://soundcloud.com/hedvigmollestadtrio Hedvig Mollestad: How do you feel about John McLaughlin’s way through music, his career, where he started and where he is now Young Southpaw: I listened to that new record he put out a couple months ago, I enjoyed it. My favourite stuff of John McLaughlin’s are those Miles Albums, those electric Miles albums. A Tribute To Jack Johnson, I could listen to that forever. Just wonderful playing. And of course Bitches Brew and Live/Evil and all those. That for me is my favourite type of music. HM: Live/Evil and Bitches Brew to me also is just, that’s just the defining what you have to try to avoid, because you can never be close to how good those records are. So if you play that kind of music it’s really hard to avoid those references. It’s really really really hard because you can never be that good. And still it’s so fun when you get into that kind of place with musicians. Absolutely. Something I found fascinating with John McLaughlin because he is just a machine, like his technique, talking about fast but he has his own way of playing fast. It’s very accentuated, in a very pentatonic-based position. But suddenly it’s not. And I’ve been thinking, because the Mahavishnu records has this thing that is something that I’m still listening to when I listen to them, that is the guitar sound. It’s wrenching, and it’s roaring, and it’s in your - it’s almost inside your face, because it’s so close. To me, that is one of the things that I really cherish. ...... HM: The Antilone riff is very jumpy YS: It’s like a frantic boogie. And the opening, my first thought was AC/DC’s ‘Thunderstruck’. HM: Yeah. I love AC/DC, really love them. Yes, that is a great reference, and also the Black Sabbath opening. The rain and the thunder. That’s fantastic, I love that reference. Putting on a jazz record in 2020 and saying ‘ah, I hear AC/DC in this jazz-rock’, that is a goal achieved. Thank you so much.

Join Wendy & Robin's casual hangout as they announce The Leftscape's Patreon page while enjoying a few adult beverages. And don't worry, no actual evil was invoked in the making of this show (nor does it have to do with Miles Davis or Black Sabbath). It's called "Live Evil" because for some unknown reason, this is how the title showed up on Facebook when Wendy began the live broadcast: noclihP morf eviL. It’s a bumper live review episode of Riot Act this week as Stephen and Remfry have spent the last week seeing... well, pretty much band ever! From Pianos Become The Teeth to Danzig, from Larry And His Flask to Iron Maiden, and all culminating in a full review of Bloodstock Open Air, the UK’s premier metal festival. We also review the new album from Foxing, take a retrospective look at Ian Brown’s Music Of The Spheres and Sigr Ros’ Kveikur, and we try to recite the alphabet backwards... although no one really knows why. We all want to take this chance to say, Welcome Back! to OMPS! Season 2 is finally here and we are excited to start it with John Powells score to Solo, A Star Wars Story. Before Brad, Kurt, and Alex get into that score they chat about the scores they have been listening to during the break. Kurt is still listening to Marco Beltramis A Quiet Place and Clint Mansells recent Hotel Artemis, while Alex has been listening to an older score (an awesome score!) for Stargate by David Arnold. Alex also brings up an excellent new score for Get Out by Michael Abels. Brad has been diving into some new scores for a while and brings up some interesting choices. One is an excellent score for an independent vampire exploitation movie called Live Evil by Austin Wintory (composer of video game soundtracks like Assassins Creed and Journey), along with new scores for In Darkness by Niall Byrne, and Tides of Fate by future-Captain Marvel composer, Pinar Toprak. All this before they start talking about one of the best scores of the year, Solo, A Star Wars Story. While the movie might not have done so well at the box office, it is undeniable that the score should sit as a champion accomplishment in the arena of film scores. Like John Debneys Cutthroat Island, John Powell has thrown every ounce of passion into this process and revealed that he has such a talent for creating memorable work, even when the film might not be successful. We are so glad you are back, and we are very excited to be back making episodes! We will be releasing episodes again every two weeks for Season 2, and promise a much bigger season than the last. The gruesome gang return from the dead for a very special live recording in front of an unholy audience in the dungeons of Filmbase. Regulars Mark "flesh-eating" Sheridan and Conor "axe-wielding" McMahon were joined by very special guests Zoe "zombie-hunter" Kavanagh and David "candelabrum-in-the-wind" Turpin to dissect all things horror. The frightful four chew over their own particular love of horror, making horror films and what puts the shivers in their shizzle, amongst other devilish discourse. Film Ireland would like to make it clear that all blood sacrifices on the night were voluntary and a result of the victims' own free will. Happy Halloween!
This week on Open Ears Closed Minds we talk Jazz, electric jazz. Jeff will be guiding us through the 1971 release Live Evil by Miles Davis. This album has been called the sound Miles was looking for when he first approached electric music and has surely influenced many musicians since. Enjoy!

Complete Playlists of all past Sets are available at jazzgumbo.blogspot.ca On balance, this Set is a bit Freer than most. That is, a lot of the music strays beyond the conventions of the mainstream. And this freer music comes in lots of variations. The earliest selections are the opening and closing numbers from Coltrane. The “Kulu Sé Mama” album was recorded in ’65 but not released until two years later. It is a bridge between ‘Trane’s earlier work, which stuck to mainstreams structures, to later work which is far more abstract than anything in this Set. They are perfect numbers for introducing the avant garde, “Welcome” especially so, based as it is on the birthday song we all know, but transformed into something far richer and emotive. The Sonny Greenwich and Jazzmeia Horn numbers are quite accessible, also. The melody and chord structures are there, but relaxed a bit, leaving more room for stretching. One way to look at free jazz (and this is only one way), is to think of improvisation as not just happening within the structure of a melody; instead, the structure itself becomes improvised. Hancock’s tune takes this a little further. The Christian Scott piece is free in a different way, doing so much with tone and atmosphere, and Gary Thomas does something similar. One of the pieces I really love is Braxton’s offering. I freely admit that a lot of Braxton’s music is beyond me – I can’t enjoy it. But there are others, like this one, that floor me! This piece is so dynamic, so driving and insistent, that it just barges beyond any analytics my mind wants to throw up and gets to my core. And I keep listening to Braxton for the occasional number that will get to me in a similar way. In a real sense, I think that gets to the heart of it: music that carries me somewhere emotionally or viscerally, whether I “understand” it or not. So much of the music of Miles Davis (who isn’t represented here, but should be) has been like this for me. From the time I first listened to him, in the late sixties, I could never really catch up to him. “Spanish Key” was the number that pulled me into “Bitches Brew”. But by the time I ‘got’ it, and went out and bought his next thing – “Live/Evil” in this case – he was into a whole other sound, and I had 'deconstruct" what I expected of him before I could ‘get’ that. And it was like that right to the end in my experience of listening to Miles. I hope there’s plenty in this Set for you to love, to be tantalized by, to open up to. Next Set, we’ll slip back into a lower Earth orbit. Thrive! Kirby Obsidian
