Welcome to the Anthology series. In this series, we seek to highlight artistes who have released a large bevy of music over a considerable period of time that has blessed the nations far and wide. We firmly believe in giving honour to whom honour is due. It takes a lot to put out music that is of good quality on a consistent basis, so we definitely don’t take that process lightly. Next on our list is Caribbean gospel music legend, Sherwin Gardner (@sherwingardnermusic). Sherwin Gardner is a pioneer in Caribbean gospel music. He was one of the first artists to record gospel music with Reggae, Soca and Dancehall rhythms. He rose to the top of his field with songs such as “I Worship You,” “Leaning” and “He Died For Me” which spent 21 weeks at No. 1 on the Caribbean gospel charts. Gardner's ministry has expanded to the world with his sixteenth album, “Greater” (Flow Masters/Tyscot), which features the U.S. Billboard Top 20 Gospel Airplay chart smash, “Because of You.” A native of Trinidad & Tobago, Gardner hails from a family of evangelists. His mother, Rev. Merle Gardner, is a pastor; his uncle, Kennedy Patterson, is a gospel artist and his grandfather, Ivan Patterson, was a Bishop in the New Testament church. Gardner began singing in churches at the age of five, and recorded his first album, “Power in the Name,” when he was 17. At the time, gospel music with Caribbean instrumentation was considered secular and was rejected by many because they focused on the rhythm instead of the lyrics. Minds began to change as they witnessed Gardner’s music influencing youth to change their lives and to become Christians. Over the years, Gardner earned nine Marlin Awards the Caribbean number one gospel awards and is now a Stellar Award nominee and he is the first non-Jamaican to earn Song of the Year. He’s also earned the COTT Award (Copyright Organization of Trinidad & Tobago, the island’s prestigious performing rights organization) as Gospel Songwriter of the Year two years in a row. Gardner has recorded sixteen albums of his own to date and has produced dozens of other artists. Gardner has spent time in the USA, working with various churches, as well as, sharing stages with the likes of CeCe Winans and Israel Houghton. He has also collaborated with the likes of Jonathan Nelson, Papa San, Todd Dulaney, Deitrick Haddon and DJ Nicholas. The “Greater” album features cameos by Deitrick Haddon and Todd Dulaney. For Sherwin Gardner, the journey is only the beginning as he continues to break into uncharted territories. More than just a singer or producer, Sherwin is a young man whose heart is focused on spreading the Good News of Jesus Christ. Experience an auditory exposé of Sherwin Gardner's ministry over the years. Enjoy Anthology: Sherwin Gardner. We firmly believe in giving honour to whom honour is due. It takes a lot to put out music that is of good quality on a consistent basis, so we definitely don’t take that process lightly. Next on our list is incandescent lyricist and freestyler, Farenite (@farenitefire). Samuel Selkridge aka 'Farenite' was born in the beautiful twin island republic of Trinidad and Tobago to parents Hussain Benjamin and Beverlyn Selkridge in the borough of Chaguanas. Described as a quiet child, he always had a thing for rhyming as he would often rhyme simple words like cat, mat, fat and rat, seeking to impress his mother. Growing up in a Christian home, it is while attending St. George’s College during his secondary school years he began writing poetry which developed into ‘freestyling’ while classmates would make beats on tables. Negatively influenced and distracted by the world, Farenite found his way back to the Lord in 2009. Determined to make a difference via his music and being encouraged by family and friends he began composing songs. In 2010 he released his first professional recording which was a gospel reggae entitled ‘Never Giving Up’ on the Best Friend Riddim. This riddim also featured Joel ‘Positive’ Murray. He became better known for his dancehall track ‘When I Wake’ which was released in 2011. This aggressive yet melodious track engaged the attention of radio broadcasters, producers and other artistes in the gospel fraternity. Farenite has been performing for the past nine years and since his first release he has recorded over 50 songs. Ordained as a pastor in 2013, the leader of The Prophetic Healing and Deliverance Ministry at Heaven Touching Earth International Ministries, he incorporates these giftings as part of his ministry when required. Used mightily of The Lord in Trinidad and Tobago, he has ministered in New York, St, Croix, Grenada, Guyana, Jamaica and recently in Panama alongside his wife Apostle Gillian Selkridge. He is known for his versatility and is unafraid of using various genres to get his message across. Impossible to box him in, he has done soca, reggae, EDM, hip hop and dancehall tracks. He has also performed alongside Positive, J Prince, Jaron Nurse, Jadee, Sean Daniel, Nathanael, Marc Isaacs, Samuel Medas, Isaac and Nehilet Blackman, Koen Duncan (now Kyiros), Shiselon, Mr. Lynx, Rizon, Blessed Messenger and Sherwin Gardner just to name a few. Getting into music production, he has produced his own music inclusive of one of his more popular songs, ‘Boldface Wit It’ and the Gospel Music Awards of Trinidad and Tobago 2019 video of the year, ‘The Transit Riddim’. He believes in the transforming power of music and has chosen to boldly proclaim his faith through this medium to positively affect people’s lives. Respected for his writing, in particular his lyricism and biblical content, he challenges himself to find more creative ways to present the gospel through his music. He released his debut album on Friday 8th November 2019, which, in its first week, reached No. 26 on the top 100 albums iTunes chart for Trinidad and Tobago. He was also the top nominee at The Gospel Music Awards of Trinidad and Tobago with 5 nominations including Album of The Year and Songwriter of The Year. Ladies and gentlemen, you're invited to press play and experience an auditory exposé of the ministry of Farenite. First on our list is singer, songwriter, musician and producer, Nathanael (@nathanael_fisherman). “These days I try to leave the office at more reasonable hours, so I could get to work on time,” he says jokingly when asked about balancing music and work. Whether rushing home from school or work, the shy, soft-spoken Trinidadian-born songwriter/musician admits that he has always had this immense passion for music. He credits his family’s move to Jamaica, at the age of 6, as being the starting point of his journey. His mom, coming from a musical family, upon observing his interest, enrolled her son into classical piano classes. Growing up as a minister’s kid, he says he naturally found himself involved with church bands and youth choirs in his early childhood. This childhood love would see him, in years to come, accompany the likes of Sherwin Gardner & Positive as a lead keyboardist in both their bands in his initial career 2012 was the year he stepped out from behind the keyboards and made his way towards the microphone, releasing his first single “Keep I”. The song was the introduction to what can only be described now as his signature sound – a unique blend of popular urban R&B and Caribbean music. To date, he has released a number of well received compositions - or ‘offerings’ as he likes to call them – namely “Courage”, “Dance Like My Daddy”, 2014’s “Caution Tape Vol.1” hip hop mixtape and the more recent favourites “For Better Or Worse” off of the ‘For Better Or Worse’ album and “Testimony” off of ‘Chances’ album - both of which were released in March 2018. The “Chances” album, one of the two debut double releases, charted at #1 on iTunes for Trinidad and Tobago within its first week digitally. Both projects would go on to do fairly well in the regional market. A poet and a writer, he is also an accomplished producer - founder of Fisherman Project (@fishermanproject), a song-writing/production company led by himself and younger brother, Daniel Hamilton. Expect more to come from the talented islander as he aims to reach his generation with the message of Christ through his art! Let us now press play and enjoy the musical stylings of this amazing artiste. Many thanks to Udo Ibeleme (@udoibeleme) for providing the foreword for this episode.
