For the first time in 21 years, Nationwide Building Society members will see a genuine choice on their AGM ballot paper. Jeremy McKeown sits down with James Sherwin-Smith, fintech executive, former MasterCard senior leader, and Oliver Wyman strategist, who is standing as the first member-nominated candidate for the Nationwide board since 2005.In this episode, James reveals what it actually takes to challenge the UK's largest building society: an FCA hearing, 350 hand-collected paper nomination forms, and a year-long battle over access to the member register. We explore why the Virgin Money acquisition went through without a member vote, why mutuals matter for everyone (not just their customers), and what every Nationwide member needs to know before ballots land in June ahead of the AGM on 15 July.Whether you're a Nationwide member, a building society customer, or simply interested in corporate governance and financial democracy, this conversation exposes a quiet erosion of member rights and what one maverick is doing about it.What You'll LearnWhy Nationwide's acquisition of Virgin Money never went to a member vote — and what it revealed about the society's governanceHow the "quick vote" box on Nationwide's ballot steers c. 85% of votes straight to the board's recommendationThe story behind James's FCA hearing (the first in 30 years) and his statutory fight for access to the member registerWhy the bar for member nominations was raised five times higher in 2000 — and what that means for democracy in mutualsHow a strong mutual sector keeps the wider banking market honest (and why mutuals didn't need bailing out in 2008)Why virtual-only AGMs are bad for member accountabilityThe difference between member ownership in theory and in practice at a £300bn institutionWhat every Nationwide member should do when their ballot arrives in JuneLinks & ResourcesJames's campaign website: james4nationwide.co.ukConnect with James on LinkedInJeremy on Substack: Hypernormal TimesEmail Jeremy: jeremymckeown@gmail.comSponsor: Progressive EquityTraining partner: Finance TalkingNationwide Building Society, Nationwide AGM 2026, James Sherwin Smith, member-nominated director, building society governance, Virgin Money acquisition, UK mutuals, mutual building society, corporate governance, FCA, financial democracy, member voting rights, Nationwide ballot, quick vote, cooperative banking, retail banking UK, Jeremy McKeown, In the Company of Mavericks

In this episode, a16z GP Martin Casado sits down with Sherwin Wu, Head of Engineering for the OpenAI Platform, to break down how OpenAI organizes its platform across models, pricing, and infrastructure, and how it is shifting from a single general-purpose model to a portfolio of specialized systems, custom fine-tuning options, and node-based agent workflows. They get into why developers tend to stick with a trusted model family, what builds that trust, and why the industry moved past the idea of one model that can do everything. Sherwin also explains the evolution from prompt engineering to context design and how companies use OpenAI's fine-tuning and RFT APIs to shape model behavior with their own data.Highlights from the conversation include: • How OpenAI balances a horizontal API platform with vertical products like ChatGPT• The evolution from Codex to the Composer model• Why usage-based pricing works and where outcome-based pricing breaks• What the Harmonic Labs and Rockset acquisitions added to OpenAI's agent work• Why the new agent builder is deterministic, node based, and not free roaming Resources: Follow Sherwin on X: https://x.com/sherwinwu Follow Martin on X: https://x.com/martin_casado Stay Updated:If you enjoyed this episode, be sure to like, subscribe, and share with your friends!Find a16z on X: https://x.com/a16zFind a16z on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/a16zListen to the a16z Podcast on Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/5bC65RDvs3oxnLyqqvkUYXListen to the a16z Podcast on Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/a16z-podcast/id842818711Follow our host: https://x.com/eriktorenbergPlease note that the content here is for informational purposes only; should NOT be taken as legal, business, tax, or investment advice or be used to evaluate any investment or security; and is not directed at any investors or potential investors in any a16z fund. a16z and its affiliates may maintain investments in the companies discussed. Watch this interview on YouTube Full transcript — Media consumption habits are changing rapidly, which means marketers have to thread the needle between "chasing the shiny new object" and embracing emerging platforms strategically. For Bob Sherwin, the chief marketing & commercial officer of Zoe, the solution is to frame new media initiatives as a test. "The test is that you're going to either win and find something new, or you're going to learn," Bob says. "As long as you set it up as a test and you're going to learn something, it's a win no matter what. Because we're going to either be way smarter about something, or we're going to find a new breakthrough." Today on Building Better CMOs, he and MMA Global CEO Greg Stuart discuss the role of CMOs in shaping customer experience; aligning marketing efforts with business outcomes; and the need for clear communication with the C-suite to maximize marketing's impact. They also talk about Zoe's personalized approach to nutrition and the challenges of marketing measurement and attribution. Today we are breaking down the paint giant Sherwin-Williams. Founded in 1866, Sherwin Williams is a great example of a company where everyday consumers might not appreciate just how great of a business and stock this has been. Over the last 20 years, Sherwin has compounded earnings at 14% per year. And over those 20 years, the stock has returned 26x your investment. And that's compared to the S&P at 5x your investment. This has been an incredible quiet compounder. My guest today is Todd Bassnight, director of equity research at Aureus Asset Management. We discuss the business's vertically integrated model, the focus on a particular customer base, a management team that's been thoughtful about capital allocation, and some of its big deals historically. The Context of White Supremacy (C.O.W.S.) Radio Program welcomes Dr. Sherwin Assari. An “associate professor of family medicine at Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science, Los Angeles,” Dr. Assari examines “the intersection of race, ethnicity, gender, and place in changing causes and consequences of health. Dr. Assari has published more than 350 papers on topics such as race, social determinants, and health equity.” Gus learned about his research during this week's discussion with Dr. Yamonte Cooper - who cites a number of Dr. Assari work in his new book, Black Men and Racial Trauma. Dr. Assari has years of research examining the different ways the System of White Supremacy impacts people classified as black. Much of his research suggests that black males are subjected to more intense forms of abuse and these same black dudes report that having more money or glamorous employment does not offer protection from Racism. In fact, for black males, having higher “socio-economic status” may cause more distress and Racial aggression. Following the earlier program, Dr. Cooper wrote Gus to say that it's unwise to say that black males are treated "worse" than other non-white people and that this phrasing promotes a "zero sum" perspective of viewing abuse. Gus asked Dr. Assari if it's accurate and evidence-based to say that in the System of White Supremacy, black males are treated worse. #BlackMalePrivilege #TheCOWS15Years INVEST in The COWS – http://paypal.me/TheCOWS Cash App: https://cash.app/$TheCOWS CALL IN NUMBER: 605.313.5164 CODE: 564943#
