Durell shares that the subject of sex can be taboo to discuss and that oftentimes due to religion we have to unlearn what we were taught and relearn from a much more open perspective. Princess shares that many of us were never taught how to view sex for pleasure because of the fact that it was usually only presented in the form of only being done for procreation. Princess and Durell talk about the importance of understanding education when it comes to sex because most people usually are making decisions and establishing certain viewpoints often from a misinformed foundation. Durell shares that he often shares a similar correlation when he's working with new artists/creatives and coaching them because having the right information to work with and informed decision making is what leads to the outcome that is desired. Durell and Princess talk discuss the fact that most women when it comes to making a list of what they want in choosing a life partner aren't making a conscious first choice of selecting a man with a disability. Princess shares that we are now in a society where women are making the choice of self-preservation and that makes it even more unlikely for them to choose a man with a disability. LaToya shares that many people living today have grown up in a bubble where they unfortunately don't have much interaction or exposure with people that are outside of their demographic or comfort zone. LaToya shares that she didn't have a choice of who her classmates were because she grew up in a poor neighborhood so she learned at a young age how to embrace others who were different. LaToya shares that we as people have to make an intentional effort to join in and welcome others into our circles. Durell shares the ideology that they talk about in Psychology called “The Single Story Stereotype” that means just because you see one particular segmented group in a particular setting you adopt the mentality that everyone else who comes from that setting is the exact same. Durell and LaToya talk about the user experience and how someone first discovers someone in today's online world. Durell shares that he makes it a point to ensure that his brand delivers a 360 degree purview of what he wants, his message and mission for what he does. LaToya shares that she comes across so many people outside of the creative space that oftentimes need a dose of reality when it comes to what they think they want to pursue as a career and that's why she created the virtual internship program within her company 3S Tech & Talent LLC. She shares that in many cases most of the interns that start the program don't finish it because once they get a real glimpse into the type of work that goes into what they say they want to do they then decide that it isn't something they feel they'd want to commit to doing everyday for 35-40 hours per week. Durell talks about his journey after graduating from Full Sail University and linking back up with Vocational Rehabilitation who's job is to help people with disabilities become gainfully employed but not necessarily caring about where that takes place. Durell shares that because he took a different path to pursue a career in the entertainment industry it would be hard for Vocational Rehabilitation to be able to place him successfully with an employer. Durell shares that knew that he couldn't live in the more traditional cities for entertainment . He shares that he knew the best thing he could do is to create his own path and company and use his relationships to help artists and also use his ability to share knowledge via his coaching and consulting program.Durell and LaToya talk about how powerful networking is and that unfortunately it's not taught how to be done properly at the collegiate level. LaToya shares that networking is more than just handing out a business card but more about having an ability to create meaningful connections that ultimately can become a reliable network that can lead to opportunities that are mutually beneficial to everyone involved. LaToya shares that she came across so many graduates who were trying to navigate the workforce as a creative and were struggling to find a job. She shares that she would have them consider jobs at companies that weren't being sought after by creatives because of the thought process of it being more technical, there were actual opportunities to show their creative talent and develop their skills much more all while getting paid. LaToya and Durell end the episode talking about so many creatives who have their dreams snatched because they don't understand how money is made and generated in the entertainment industry and they really need to take the time to study the business models of the area within the industry in which they have a desire to pursue. Durell shares that if you want to make a lot of money within the career that you are pursuing then the entertainment industry isn't the industry to go into and put in the work to build a career because the money doesn't flow in quickly. Durell and LaToya talk about the technology that she created called the RFP Quick technology. LaToya shares that most disabled people have no idea that they can actually go after government contracts that can help them to turn a side hustle into a legitimate business and see exponential growth very quickly. LaToya shares that the government sets aside money for minorities, disabled people and disadvantaged business owners every year but you must know how to access these types of opportunities. LaToya shares that RFP stands for Request For Proposals and you must submit a proposal to even be able to win and secure a government contract. The RFP Quick technology is designed for those who are disabled and what sets her technology apart is that it's designed to work with screen readers and make it much easier for those who are visually impaired in giving them a standard designed proposal that allows for them to have the opportunity to achieve success in winning the proposal they submitted for. In this episode Durell is joined by DJ, producer, content creator and podcaster Lorenzo “DJ Lozo” Flores. The episode begins with Durell and Lorenzo sharing how they got connected during a panel at Full Sail University back in 2018. Durell asks Lorenzo where he's originally from and he shares that he grew up in Detroit, Michigan but has also lived in Los Angeles, California, Atlanta, Georgia and he now currently resides in Orlando, Florida. Durell asks Lorenzo about his earliest memories of music and he shares that he remembers his mother always listening to music and had it always on when he was a kid. Lorenzo shares that he remembers listening to Funk and Classic Rock. He shares that his step dad also listened to a variety of music and then as he got older in the late 80's he began listening to and loving Hip-Hop. Durell and Lorenzo talk about his days as a college rep for Def Jam Records, Ruff House Records and XXL Magazine. Lorenzo shared that he went to school at Western Michigan University and met a DJ named DJ Tanqueray who taught him how to DJ. Lorenzo shared that he then bought his own DJ equipment and began DJing and making mixtapes. He started his journey into college radio and he was hired as a college rep. He said that as a college rep he really needed to know about the different music that was coming out on the different major record companies so that when the labels sent their artists to be interviewed the questions would be relevant to what was needing to be marketed and promoted. He shares that those were the days when college radio was the vehicle that helped new artists get heard. Durell says that he feels that college radio matters even still in today's marketplace. Lorenzo shared that college radio is a great place to perfect media training. Durell shares that so many indie creatives sleep on the small venues and towns because of the lack of notoriety but what makes the small venues in the small town valuable is the fact that the patrons get to touch and spend time getting to know these creatives which creates genuine supporters. Durell shares that there is a difference between fans and supporters. Fans like the music you create as opposed to supporters who will actually spend money to show their appreciation. Lorezo shares the story of how he was able to get RUN DMC to come play a small club because of a booking that he did for them when he was in college because they couldn't get a club to book them back in the 80's ten years after and that was because they wanted to give back and say thank you to him even though they couldn't promote the show publicly. Durell and Lorenzo talk about the importance of building leverage as a new indie creative. Durell shares that he often tells indie creatives that building a career in music is a long play. Lorenzo shares that when you are able to show the ability to make things happen on a budget or smaller scale and can prove that you are here for the long haul of the grind, that's the recipe for success. Durell and Lorenzo both agree that making music professionally is a team sport and the great thing about pursuing a professional music career in today's ecosystem and marketplace for indie creatives is the ability to create and define success on their terms. Durell asks Lorenzo when he decided to begin his pivot into producing music. He shared that he had a friend who had a MPC and a chord triton and began to teach him the basics of how to produce. He shares that he was mostly self taught after learning how to use his sampler and because he grew up on such an eclectic background of music he was really able to craft a sound. He was able to take what he had learned in crafting his sound and began to get a few music placements on various indie creatives as well as sync placements for HBO, Comedy Central and FOX. Durell and Lorenzo share the importance for creatives to have their business right especially when it comes to making sure their publishing is properly setup because we are in the era of metadata and music supervisors not wanting to get sued so handling all of the back end is a major key in being successful in today's music ecosystem. Lorenzo shares that its so important for indie creatives to find someone who can help them navigate the business of making sure they are set up correctly so they can focus on making great art. He also shares how much he appreciates what Durell does in giving knowledge for free to help indie creatives on his social media platforms.Durell and Lorenzo end the episode talking about his podcast called “The Life Of Lozo” podcast. He shares that the podcast is about him having great conversations with his friends about music or he would interview a business owner and chat with them about life and business. He also shares that the “Life Of Lozo podcast'' spun off to a podcast about leadership entitled “Hacking Your Leadership Podcast” because the people told him that they wanted to hear him talk about leadership which has had over 3 million downloads. Durell and Lorenzo talk about his hip-hop detective graphic novel entitled CRHYME®. Lorenzo shared that the graphic novel is centered around the different hip-hop lyrics about crime scenes and how a detective goes about solving the different crimes. For more info on Lorenzo “DJ Lozo” Flores, please checkout his websites and socials below:Websites: https://www.lifeoflozo.com/Graphic Novel- https://www.crhyme.com/Social HandlesInstagram- @life_of_lozo @crhyme.novel

Durell and Fabiana begin the episode talking about her accent and she shares that her accent is undefined because she was born in Chicago IL but her parents are from Bolivia. She also shares that she is married to a Cuban pianist so Spanish is what is spoken in her home. Durell shares that he has a special connection to Chicago because he is a die-hard Chicago Cubs baseball fan and the artist in which he manages also is from Chicago. Durell asks Fabiana about her earliest memories of being introduced to music. Fabiana shares that she was living in Mozambique, Africa and her mother would sing to her and get her started playing the piano. She shares that after that she moved to Bolivia where her mother would get her started in more formal music training at a special gifted school when she was around the age of 8 or 9. Fabiana says that she was absolutely drawn to music. Durell shares that he believes that as human beings we can't live without music. Fabiana shares she often feels that being creative can be a gift and a curse because for those who want to pursue their creative endeavors because those who are working in fields that make them a lot of money they aren't able to use their creativity as an outlet which unfortunately begins to erode at their soul.Durell asks Fabiana when she knew that she wanted to go into the education space to teach music. She shares that she has always been fascinated with music business and entrepreneurship especially after she finished her Doctorate in music. She shares that she started a music school in 2011, and after 5 years of building and going through the trials of learning how to build and sustain the business she realized that there were so many other musicians that could benefit from her experiences and what she had learned about entrepreneurship. She shares that The University Of North Texas was beginning a new program and initiative to help their students who graduated to become really gifted musicians but even more so be able to make a living. She shared that the University appointed her as the director of the program and she moved to Texas from Miami to serve the program for 5 years. She shared that she had to learn how to reverse engineer the processes that she learned in order to be able to teach them to the students. Many of her students have gone on to build their own businesses, as well as find great jobs at other companies and organizations. Fabiana decided that in 2020 she decided to open up herself online and began to serve musicians online with her mentorship program entitled “The Musicians Profit Umbrella” while still working her job at the University, and she then in 2021 decided to leave her full-time position to go into entrepreneurship.Durell and Fabiana talk about the framework he created called the “Genesis Of Superfan Building” and the importance of creating a solid brand positioning statement. The ability to be able to understand the 3 Pillars Of Fan Engagement: Authenticity, Consistency, & Sustainability so that musicians and creatives can build community. Durell shares that when creatives understand that they are problem solvers with their music and use that to create consistent content for social media, that's when a major breakthrough of being able to embrace the hurdles they face begins to disappear. Durell and Fabiana discuss the difference between the old world vs. the new world when it comes to building a music career. Durell shares that one major difference is that the term recording artist doesn't really mean what it used to mean in the old world. Durell shares that the better term to use is that artists are now content creators with a focus on music because of the major need to develop a strong content strategy before releasing music. Fabiana shares that what she sees today as a major difference is the ability to build a movement and getting others to buy into what you stand for as a creative and what you can do for others. The ability to be able to then use the content that you create to sell products. Fabiana also shares that another major difference between the old world vs. the new world is that creatives and musicians had to depend on gatekeepers. The industry didn't allow creatives to be able to stand in their authority because of someone else holding the key and being in control of the ability to be successful in reaching an audience. Fabiana shares that now there is no barrier to entry for musicians and creatives which is a blessing and a curse because on one hand being able to go direct to your audience is great but without a strategy of how to talk to and really connect with them they will not be able to break through the noise and standout. Durell and Fabiana discuss the importance of creatives being able to think like start-up companies and become comfortable with selling. Fabiana shares that she remembers being encouraged by one of her coaches to reach out to people within her musician community and look for ways in which she could serve in a greater capacity. She talks about not feeling comfortable doing that with so much limiting belief. She shares that once she understood the fact that she was offering potential clients something they needed to help them experience the transformation they needed it became so much easier.Durell and Fabiana end the episode talking about creatives and musicians feeling the need to have all of the knowledge they need before investing into themselves to help propel themselves to the next level of success and how that is really a backwards way to approach getting the help they desire and ultimately need. Fabiana shares that in order for someone to learn new skills they must not only invest financially but even more with committing their time. Fabiana shares her reasons why creatives should set themselves apart in knowing what made them want to be a musician and creative first and the reason why creatives need systems in place to build their businesses. For more information on Fabiana Claure, please visit her website:https://fabianaclaure.com/

In this episode Durell is joined by indie hip hop creative and music business consultant Kareem Guy. The episode begins with Durell and Kareem discussing how they got connected because of a mutual respect for what they both do for indie creatives in teaching them how to navigate the music space. Durell asks Kareem about his earliest memories of music. He shared with Durell what was the most pivotal moment for him in music and he says that moment was in 2006 when he wrote his very first rhyme in middle school. He shares that he made a makeshift type studio in his best friend' basement and recorded his first song and put it on Myspace. Durell shares that he knew he wanted to make a difference in the journey of indie creatives and he had the opportunity to do just that and that's when great things started to happen especially when he understood the power of branding himself. Kareem and Durell both agree that it can get difficult at times working with indie creatives but both believe it's most definitely worth it. Kareem and Durell talk about how important it is for indie creatives to create a solid brand. Branding is what creates the value and Durell shares that oftentimes music consumers will connect to the person before they connect to the music that an indie creative will release into the marketplace. Durell shares this is the reason why Cardi B is the perfect case study that proves her to be a prime example of why fans connect to her even before her music. Durell asks Kareem when he knew he wanted to pursue music professionally. Kareem shares that he definitely was initially focused on being an artist first. He shares that he had linked up with a collective of artists with the goal of “getting on” together in which they were able to gain local traction but Kareem wanted them to be way bigger than being known locally. He found himself drawing a blank when he was researching on how to fix the problem of wanting to build a wider audience. When he did find solutions to the problems his collective were having he shared that he often would see them fall on deaf ears. He shares that out of frustration he would vent on Instagram about the issues that he was experiencing and that actually began to resonate with his followers much more than his music. His next step was that he knew he needed to learn more about the music business so he enrolled in NYU's Music Business Essentials program. Once he learned the information he needed to know he realized that there was so much to learn if indie artists wanted to build a successful music career. He knew he wanted to share the information he was learning after being more knowledgeable about the music business but once again it was falling on deaf ears. Kareem shares that he wanted to keep delivering the information he learned on his socials because he saw that his followers were still so receptive about receiving his knowledge. Durell asks Kareem about how he feels about the current state of the music business. Kareem shares that he definitely feels that there are way more tools and resources for artists to get their music heard. He shares that having success in the current state of the music business is having a mindset shift. The mindset shift is understanding that the music that indie creatives put out is their product and they are a business. Durell and Kareem both agree the reason so many creatives fail is because they only see success in one prism which only consists of achieving massive success. Durell shares that he often tells indie creatives that it's okay to have success that only nets moderate success but the ability to be full time as a creative is the ultimate goal. Kareem and Durell talk about how many artists want to have viral success but don't have the infrastructure to be able to take advantage of the viral success. Durell asks Kareem why he feels that indie creatives don't embrace education. He shares that education isn't as sexy and fun to learn and that when he gets on a strategy call with a client there are certain topics that he won't even try to tackle because he knows that he will lose them because of how complicated they can be. He shares that one of his top lead magnets is a release-ready quiz and he notices that there is so much information that indie creatives don't know because of the lack of education. Durell shares that there are two types of education tracks within music, intellectual property and how to build and maintain a fanbase. Durell and Kareem end the episode talking about his club that he created called the “Indiepreneur Club”. He shares that his club was inspired because he began to do one on coaching calls which were successful but he wanted a more salable business model that would allow him to provide just as much value but for a more affordable price. He shares that he gives his founder members a 30-day money back guarantee if they don't see value in what he offers inside the club. He also co-hosts a weekly show called “The Huddle” streamed on Twitch. The Huddle is a show about what the latest trends are in the music business and social media. He shares that he's had the opportunity to interview some great people doing amazing things for indie creatives such as Joel Andrews (CD Baby President), Alex Gershwin (Songtrust) and “Z” (The Co-Founder, Audiomack & DJ Booth). For more information on Kareem Guy please visit his Instagram profile and website:@keyztothegamehttps://www.keyztothegame.com/

The episode begins with Durell asking Mike and Caroline what are their earliest memories of music. Mike shared that he grew up playing football and once he got to high school he realized that he didn't have the size to keep playing without getting hurt. He remembers seeing a poster with a guy playing a guitar and he knew instantly he wanted to try playing the guitar and he knew that he had a strong work ethic that would provide the ability for him to become really good and he knew he wouldn't get hurt like he would have if he continued to play football. Caroline shares that her earliest memories of music were that she remembers her parents having a large record collection and listening to music all of the time. She shares that she remembers a lot of classical music as well as artists such as the Beatles, & James Taylor always being on. She shares that she played flute in the marching band in high school. Caroline says that her parents always had a lot of books around and that she was always reading which developed into a passion for writing. She ended up going into a career in counseling and it wasn't until about 5 years ago that she really developed a passion for writing lyrics. Durell asks Mike when did he know that he wanted to pursue music professionally as a career. He shares that he lost his mom and dad at an early age. He went to a recording school but his brothers were in the construction business and wanted him to join them because they didn't think it was possible to make a living as a musician. Mike shares that he went to work with his brothers on the road for 3 months and he says all he kept thinking was that he had to figure out how to make music work professionally because he couldn't see himself being a construction worker for the rest of his life. Mike says the first thing he did was he got a job in a music store as well as began teaching lessons which he says quickly picked up. He had several jobs that would allow him to stay around music and make a living. He shares that he decided to move to Orlando from Philadelphia because he wanted a new start. He moved down and began to establish himself within the music scene and started playing in studios as a session player. He shared that he was an original band and got nominated for a Grammy. The band disbanded and Mike decided that he would make the pivot into producing. He shared that he wanted to create a business and he knew that artists were no longer being developed the way they used to be so he along with Caroline decided that would be something worth getting into to help new artists prepare for the real world music industry. Caroline and Durell both agree that education is a major key to success. Durell asks Mike & Caroline how they approach artist development. They share that the cornerstone of what they do is “craft development”. Mike does a lot of work to make sure that their clients know how to write songs and do the creative process to the best of their ability. Caroline shares that their clients don't really enjoy the business aspect of music because it's not as fun but absolutely necessary. Caroline says that social media is an aspect that so many creatives don't like. Durell shares the reason why most indie creatives don't particularly like social media is because they oftentimes don't know who they are talking too and that's why he makes it a point to focus on that when he's working with his clients. Caroline shares that they tell their clients that if they just want to be famous then they can't guarantee that but what they will guarantee is that when they've completed their program there will be opportunities that can allow for a full time career in music. Durell, Mike, & Caroline end the episode talking about how they've diversified their income streams by focusing more on sync licensing. Mike shares that he finds it interesting how different the sync world is compared to working primarily with artists. Durell shares that he has learned so much from his mentor and friend Michele Vice-Maslin in regards to learning the different rules and what is expected of someone who wants to make a living within that world. Durell asks Caroline how she feels about artist management. Caroline says it wasn't something that they focused on within the company. She shared that because she didn't have a music business background she began to read Ari Herstand's book “How To Make It In The New Music Business” to get a better understanding of what to know to help their clients. Caroline shares that she went to conferences to learn and network as well. She shares that she dipped her toe a bit into the day-to-day management of a few artists and quickly realized the biggest challenge was getting them to want to put in the work that is really required to build success in today's music business.Mike and Caroline share that they have been focusing more on expanding their song catalog and that has been something they want to do a lot more of.
