Running Sheet: Those Dry Stone Walls Of South Australia 00:00:00 Intro Introduction 00:04:05 SA Drink Of The Week The South Australian Drink Of The Week this week is the brand new Raspberry and Finger Lime Gin from 23rd Street Distillery. This gin is a really interesting blend of juicy raspberries and tangy finger lime. After soaking the blue juniper berries they then start the vapor distil process, creating a spicy, aromatic gin base. Then they add in the raspberries and finger lime, which soak for about three weeks, tasting daily to get that balance right. The gin's smooth and fruity, and its recommended to mix it with tonic or soda and garnish with lime and mint. Our guest taster, John Gledhill from Gledhill Vignerons, mixed the drinks with Bickfords Soda and Bickfords Dry Tonic, and then pulled a rabbit out of the hat, mixing it with Fever Tree Raspberry Tonic. He also agrees with the good people at 23rd Street, that this would go very very well with dark chocolate. 00:18:30 Bruce Munday, Those Dry Stone Walls Revisited South Australia is blessed with beautiful stone – stone with colour, texture and light. Some of our stone structures have stood for 150 years, never touched by mortar. So, in this episode, Bruce Munday returns to The Adelaide Show to share the stories behind these stone walls and the people who built them and commissioned them. His book is, Those Dry Stone Walls Revisited, out through Wakefield Press. If Bruce sounds familiar, he was last on our show in 2017, discussing the history of rabbits in South Australia and beyond. 01:03:50 Musical Pilgrimage In the Musical Pilgrimage, we feature Sincerely Me by Hayli. Hayli was first on The Adelaide Show in episode 369, but has released a new single since then, Sincerely Me, which is very very raw. In fact, it comes with an explicit tag so if you're listening with kids or you'd prefer not to have your sensibilities pushed, you might want to click through to listen to some of her other tracks instead. As you'll hear in our interview, Hayli is a dynamic artist who pursues great clarity in in her stories, with the lyrics matching the melody and performance. So, it only follows that when she is unpacking a story of betrayal, that the passion and the rawness go off the scale. I've since discovered why Hayli was so generous in her interview and so clear in her willingness to dive into her storytelling through song; it's because she wants all of us to embrace music culture , whether we're adults or whether we're kids who are thinking about learning an instrument. Hayli, who is the music teacher at Seaview High School, says the most important part to of music is that people learn the value of self expression and teamwork. And she must be doing something right because her students have nominated her as the ARIA Music Teacher of the year. You can watch the nomination video with Sarah McLeod, and you can also vote for her, once a day, between now and November 13, 2024.Support the show: https://theadelaideshow.com.au/listen-or-download-the-podcast/adelaide-in-crowd/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Big thank you to the Bronx's own Chris Rivers for coming on my show for an interview! Chris discussed his new album Apophenia with his collective Oswin Benjamin and Denzil Porter, how this collective formed, and that his monumental album to put his career on the map will be on the way soon. He shared memories of being with his father, the late great Hip-Hop icon Big Pun, on tour and being around him while he was recording in the studio. He got into forgiving his father for the abuse, his Big Pun tribute song Sincerely Me, and how it felt when his father got his own plaza, the Big Pun Plaza, in the Bronx. He got into being apart of a rap group with Benzino's son at 8 years old and that deal with Interscope getting shelved because of Benzino's beef with Eminem at the time. Chris talked about overcoming his depression, being homeless, and when he started to take his rap career into the public eye. He also got into his bond with Styles P, who he wants to collaborate with, and what would make him sign a major record deal. Chris announced that he has music videos from Apophenia and more music dropping soon. Stay tuned! PATREON MOVIE DISCUSSION: This movie was selected by our Patreon Supporters over at the Cinematic Doctrine Patreon. Support as little as $3 a month and have your voice heard!Dear Evan Hansen is our most expensive episode. Coming in at a whopping $35 for rentals, as well as 2.5 hours' worth of content, we truly have spent far too much on this episode. But it's all worth it for our Patreon Supporters! We love you all, and that's why we spend this first of three episodes discussing some of the history behind Dear Evan Hansen, how the casting for Evan Hansen immediately kills the movie dead, and the beginnings of what makes this movie so frustrating. Topics: Every year there is a movie that garners the scorn of film-goers. Currently, Dear Evan Hansen has it.Detailing the history behind Dear Evan Hansen, it's musical, it's awards, and now, it's movie.Ben Platt, the 28-year-old actor playing Evan Hansen, who is 17 during the events of the film, looks to be in his mid-30's based upon the hair, make-up, wardrobe, and camera lenses used throughout the movie. It never stops being a distraction.Daniel found Dear Evan Hansen, "very morally troubling and borderline disturbing at times for various reasons."Melvin likes movies where someone morally reprehensible builds a house of cards, and even audibly exclaimed to his wife while watching the movie, "See, this is awesome! I love this stuff!". So, in that respect, there are some things about Dear Evan Hansen he enjoyed. There are a lot of similarities between Dear Evan Hansen and a little-known Netflix movie called Sierra Burgess is a Loser, another villainous "house of cards" movie Melvin enjoyed. The movie really expects its audience to fill in the gaps for so many hard issues, all on top of the fact that Ben Platt looks way too old to perform as an older teen.Although the movie has a juvenile perspective to mental health and social issues, some things work like the song 'Requiem', where each family member sings their response to Connor's suicide, and how not everyone responds to the death of a family member in the same way.The song 'Sincerely Me' captures a bit of the dark-comedy aspect both Melvin and Daniel wanted throughout the movie.Daniel, on the topic of the many hard-hitting themes in the movie, "It's not examined at all. Nothing in this movie is examined. That's one of the problems."Recommendations: Harold Lindsell's "Lindsell Study Bible: The Living Bible, Paraphrased - Reference Edition"The Ezra Klein Show - "The Case Against Loving Your Job"Jenny Nicholson's "A Needlessly Thorough Roast of Dear Evan Hansen"Support on Patreon for Unique Perks! Are you more afraid of failure, or success? What a loaded question. It's easy to believe that our minds are wired to want success. But in all actuality, the way that our minds are wired can be a leading factor that's holding us back. In our lives, “the longer we have sat with thoughts of doubt, the more room we gave for doubt to feel familiar. So anything and everything else starts to feel threatening. The idea of being happy and successful starts to feel threatening because we're not used to it” - (Tallia) So how can you break free of these thoughts of doubt and fear? How can you work on rewiring your thought process to allow your patterns and habits to form around healthy thoughts? In this episode, Tallia Dejou joins me to dissect the subconscious mental blocks that we have around fear of failure, so we can start peeling off our layers of learned fear, in order to step into our own power. The 2011 film, Red State, was the first departure of Kevin Smith from his rather more comedic roots. It’s a grindhousey horror action film more akin to The Devil’s Rejects than the suburban hijinks of Mallrats or Clerks. Smith self-produced the whole film, then released it under his own Smodcast Films banner. In an interesting turn of events, as Smith was wrapping filming on the movie in October of 2010, he put out a call via Twitter for speed metal and country tunes. The country tune he picked was Adam Lee & the Dead Horse Sound Company's "Drinking, Cheating, Loving, and Leaving," from their 2010 album, When the Spirits Move Me. We spoke by phone with Adam Lee about that song, as well as Smith’s movie Tusk. We started off with a discussion of Lee’s new solo album, Sincerely Me, which was released earlier this year.
