New York City has officially approved Mayor Zohran Mamdani's rent-freeze plan for roughly one million rent-stabilized apartments, delivering a major political victory for the progressive mayor while igniting fierce debate over the future of the city's housing market. Supporters argue the freeze will provide desperately needed relief for renters struggling with the nation's highest housing costs. Critics warn it could discourage investment, accelerate building deterioration, reduce available housing, and ultimately drive rents even higher for everyone else.
