11: Building Credibility with Scott Aman

Men of Grace

In this episode, Chris Rivers, Scott Aman, and Chad Clint discuss “Just Serve Day,” an outreach ministry event at Grace Church. Scott shares his involvement in this event and how it has impacted his life in a personal way. Scott and Chad also explore the benefits of serving, in any capacity, and talk about how it can build credibility with others and open the door for gospel conversations. Share, listen and then discuss the application, key ideas, and scripture references in a one on one conversation or with a group of men. Episode # 11 Study Questions: bit.ly/3a3zIY6 APPLICATION Have you participated in “Just Serve Day” at Grace Church or another service-focused event? In what ways did your participation shape you or challenge you in some way? How has God opened doors for you to have gospel conversations while you were serving others? Where do you think you would fall on the “Me and Others” continuum Scott described? What obstacles prevent you from pouring yourself out for others? What benefits have you gained from serving others? What do you think are some of the challenges to serving? KEY POINTS “Just Serve Day” is an outreach ministry event at Grace Church. It is an opportunity for the church to band together to serve the community and strengthen local partners. Teams from each campus take part in service projects ranging from picking up trash to lawn maintenance/beautification to other facility maintenance projects. This event is not a “one and done” serving day. The goal is to create a culture of service, develop credibility in the community, and ultimately lead to gospel conversations with the people served. Scott participated in “Just Serve Day” by volunteering at The Renewal Center, an addiction treatment center for women. He admits to being hesitant, at first, but recognized this as an opportunity to use his gifts and take action. Scott watched God work through this experience and was able to see how serving opened the door to build relationships and tell people about Jesus. Scott shared a visual image of what he called “The Me and Others Continuum.” On one end of the continuum is our own self-centered thinking and desire to please self. On the other end is meeting the needs of others and striving to live like Jesus. Through his experiences, Scott began to see himself moving towards the “others” end of the continuum and starting to grasp the meaning of being “poured out.” Scott’s participation in “Just Serve Day” was beneficial in many ways. First, it helped to build camaraderie and fellowship. As men and women worked together to accomplish a goal, they grew closer through this shared experience. Next, it allowed participants to show their love and concern for others while being compelling to the community they served. Finally, it pushed Scott and those who served alongside him to avoid passivity and move to action. In this episode, host Chris Rivers interviews Brad Walbridge and Tim Bosier as they discuss the people involved in welcoming members and guests. They look at various Connect Team roles and explore the question: how do we engage with the people we see at our campuses each week using a discipleship lens? For Connect Team volunteers, the primary mission is to help people feel connected to the church. This means, regardless of your role, there is always an undercurrent of looking for new faces and focusing on ways to improve the experience and comfort level for members and guests. Specific roles are explored, including: Connect Team Lead- This is a person who is really clear on who Grace is as a church and is involved in worshipping and serving. They act as a model for the rest of the team. They are knowledgeable, lead or assist in training new volunteers, and drive the vision and growth of the team Parking Team - Individuals serving on the parking team are the first impression for guests. They are responsible for engaging people as they walk in and directing them to where they need to go. This can also include small tasks such as helping a family with young children as they are getting out of the car. Welcome and Greeting Team - A member of this team should be welcoming, engaging, and highly energetic. Their goal is always connection. They seek to meet new people each week and build relationships. They also escort guests to destinations such as the worship center, children's check in, or the guest services team. Guest Services Team - This is a person who has the ability to move towards people and make them feel welcomed. They are aware of what is going on and are knowledgeable about the activities and ministries at Grace. They help to connect the dots for guests and members. Usher Team - This role is often viewed as logistical, but is vital for creating a welcoming environment. Ushers are not simply tasked with seating people, but with having a pulse for who is coming in and out and looking for ways to interact. They should be warm, inviting, and approachable. Safety Team - The mission of a safety team volunteer to serve attendees by helping to create a safe environment for worship services. While they should be alert and aware of what is going on around them, they are also responsible for connecting with people. These connections often help them NEXT STEPS: Review the “People” section in the Connect Team Handbook (LINK). Talk about what you have heard with your CT lead, campus pastor, or other group members. If you are already serving, think of one small step you can take this week to help someone feel more connected. If you are new to serving, brainstorm one idea you could implement in your new role.

In this episode, host Chris Rivers interviews Will Fallaw from the Travelers Rest campus of Grace Church. Throughout the podcast, Will strives to unpack the processes within Connect Team that allow each member to use their role as a volunteer to further opportunities for discipleship, which is the mission of the church. Will emphasizes the importance of creating a process as a connect team to help pull the church body into discipleship. He warns that without it, our natural tendency is to become too invested in connecting within a team and neglect the mission of the team itself, which is to help connect the body of the church to each other. Without a great process to eliminate distraction, this ministry can be chaotic and unfruitful. Chris and Will discuss three big ways to welcome members and guests, including tips for embracing the potential awkwardness and staying mission-minded through practical strategy and intentional communication. NEXT STEPS: Review the “Process” section in the Connect Team Handbook (LINK). Talk about what you have heard with your CT lead, campus pastor, or other group members. In this episode, referencing the Connect Team Handbook (LINK), Chris Rivers speaks with Derek Nelson and Chas Crenshaw about the purpose of Connect Teams. They explore the importance of creating a welcoming environment for newcomers. This includes prioritizing guests, personally engaging them, and taking steps to connect them to the mission of the church. By utilizing various techniques such as asking personal questions, remembering names, and directing people to resources (i.e. childcare, coffee, information, etc), Connect Team members can offer an approach that is both personal and authentic. This can also lead to feelings of greater connectedness among guests and a desire to pursue next steps within the church. Chas and Derek reiterate the importance of the huddle in casting this type of vision. A huddle is a unique opportunity for Connect Team members to meet each week before the service begins. During this time, leaders pray for the group, provide encouragement, and remind team members of the “why” behind what they do. This helps to refocus the team on the mission and prevents members from simply going through the motions. Questions for Reflection Prior to serving in your Connect Team role, take time to answer this question: What does it look like to be hospitable? What can I do to ensure the guests I interact with today feel as comfortable as possible? After serving, take time to reflect on these questions: How many guests did our campus see this week? How many guests did I personally meet? What are the names of the guests I met? NEXT STEPS: Review the “Purpose” section in the Connect Team Handbook. Discuss any questions or insights with your Connect Team Leader or campus pastor. Consider the “questions for reflection” during your next serving opportunity. In this episode, Chris Rivers, Jim Taylor, and Vernon Rutland discuss the process of recovery through the re:gen ministry at Grace Church and explore how this played a role in Vernon's story. Share, listen and then discuss the application, key ideas, and scripture references in a one on one conversation or with a group of men. Episode # 10 Study Questions: https://bit.ly/3yrF8G8 KEY POINTS Vernon went through a period where he was struggling in many different areas of his life. There was conflict in his marriage, tension at work, and an overall feeling of isolation. During this time, Vernon engaged in an extramarital affair. He tried, in his own efforts, to keep it all together. However, as guilt for his actions and the pressure he was feeling continued to mount, he decided to come clean with his wife. Vernon's wife asked him to move out and he quickly felt his world come crashing down around him. Vernon and his family had been members at Grace for 3 years when this situation took place. He was a member of a community group and had begun working through some of the Men's Roundtable studies. While Vernon admits he was participating on a surface level and not really plugged in, he was surprised by the outpouring of love and support by his community group leader and other godly men in his life. They did not condone his sin, but rallied around him and spoke hard truths he needed to hear. Vernon made the decision to attend a re:gen recovery group at Grace Church. These groups are based on the 12-step recovery process and incorporate the Biblical concepts and language behind these ideas. Vernon originally did not want to go and entered the room on the first night with skepticism. As he continued in the process, he became aware of his brokenness. He began to see sins of pride and self-reliance in his life and realized his need for true dependence on God. Re:gen served as a catalyst for healing and gave Vernon the tools to recognize and address his sin. It changed his outlook on how much he needed God and allowed him to be fully known and loved by other broken Christians like himself. Vernon was able to gain accountability and move away from the isolation that characterized his life. Through hard work and a commitment to the process, Vernon saw God redeem his marriage and his family. He gained a new perspective regarding his need for God and saw his faith strengthened. SCRIPTURE REFERENCES But when the teachers of religious law who were Pharisees saw him eating with tax collectors and other sinners, they asked his disciples, “Why does he eat with such scum?” When Jesus heard this, he told them, “ Healthy people don't need a doctor-sick people do. I have come to call not those who think they are righteous, but those who know they are sinners.” Mark 2:16-17 For the word of God is alive and powerful. It is sharper than the sharpest two-edged sword, cutting between soul and spirit, between joint and marrow. It exposes our innermost thoughts and desires. In episode 15, Chris Rivers speaks with Matt Kelley, Worship Pastor/Director of Leadership Development at Grace Church, and Davis Craig, Students' Advisor and Internship & Residency Director, about the concept of creating a downline. This discipleship strategy involves intentionally pouring into the lives of others with the goal of replicating future leaders. Matt shares his experience being the recipient of a downline and also building his own downline. He poses the question to listeners: Who are the 2-3 people in your life you need to be investing time into who could be the next person to take your role? Matt and Davis unpack the challenges involved in creating a downline including: seeing the process as a threat to your position, making the time to include people in your world, having flexibility with your schedule, creating opportunities for training and cleaning up the messes this may create, and loving people well enough to tell them the truth. This strategy, while difficult to flesh out, is an important and necessary step in the process of reproducing leaders. With an attitude of humility, patience, and intentionality, listeners can learn to build a discipleship culture that impacts the future of the church and those who will come behind. In this episode, Chris Rivers and Jacob Cook discuss Jacob’s journey in discovering what it means to be an Authentic Man. They talk about how Jacob's understanding of responsibility and the force of community on his life broke his relentless pursuit of “power” and “importance.” Here are also some other key concepts Jacob communicates during this episode: 1. We can be doing all the right things, but still feel empty. Jacob realized his heart was not where it needed to be and he was relying on his own strength. All of his attempts at gaining power were to bring glory to himself, not God. Is there anything you are doing that is causing you to rely on your own strength instead of God’s strength? If so, what next steps could you take to move towards God in that area? 2. Most men tend towards passivity or self-reliance. Self-reliance creeps in when we try to be responsible for everything in our own power and try to manage things we are not really responsible for. In what ways do you personally struggle with passivity and self-reliance? 3. The only way to truly be powerful is allowing God to be powerful through us. When we allow Him control, it leads to true life change and maturity in our walk with Christ. Where have you seen God’s power manifested in your life or the life of another authentic man? What stands out to you about the change that you have experienced or have observed in someone else? 4. When we spread ourselves too thin and try to be responsible for all of the people and situations around us, we miss the opportunity to be truly known by others. This aspect of community is crucial in our growth as men and as believers. What does Biblical community look like for you? Read Galatians 6:1-3, Acts 2:42-43 and share some key ideas that stand out to you in those two passages. Where do you need to move in this area? In a world that offers only toxic or shallow definitions of manhood, we must examine the Scriptures to discover what it truly means to be a man. As men who are pursuing Christ, we recognize our culture sends conflicting messages about manhood and masculinity. This has led to a lot of confusion among men. In this episode, Mike Adams, Daniel Black, and Chris Rivers discuss conflict in marriage, personalities and how they manifest passivity, and the role of community in navigating marital conflict. Here are a few key concepts Mike communicates during this episode: Typically, passivity is associated with timidity, avoiding responsibility, or simply having a “laid back” personality. Mike explains how passivity manifested in his life as a Type A personality. HIs assertiveness, desire for control and power, and need to give direction caused him to be passive in the way he related to people. This often led him to be insensitive to others’ feelings and lacking in empathy. The personality differences between Mike and his wife and his strong desire for control led to conflicts early on in their marriage. Over time, Mike learned the importance of inviting his wife’s perspective into situations and giving validity to her suggestions and preferences. The role of community was integral to their marriage. As they experienced patterns of conflict and increased divisiveness in their relationship, Mike sought out help from a couple in their church. They helped mediate the conflict between Mike and his wife and gave perspective on the situation. Making the decision to invite another couple into their lives and relationship involved a high degree of vulnerability. There is always some level of fear when you expose your weaknesses and are willing to be honest about your struggles. However, Mike saw this as an opportunity to reject passivity and move towards growth in his marriage and his relationship with God. Two Bible passages mentioned in the episode: 2 Timothy 1:7 - For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline. Galatians 6:2 - Share each other’s burdens, and in this way obey the law of Christ.
