From the outside, Chrissy Metz seemed to have it all starring in a hit show, inspiring millions, and radiating confidence but behind the spotlight was a woman navigating the painful realities of childhood trauma, body image struggles, people-pleasing, and the long road to emotional healing. In this heartfelt conversation, Chrissy opens up about the survival patterns she developed as a young girl trying to be “good” enough to be loved and how those patterns followed her into adulthood. She shares her experience growing up in a fractured home, enduring emotional pain in silence, and turning to food as both comfort and protection. Through therapy, spiritual grounding, and creative expression, Chrissy began the deep work of untangling her worth from performance. We explore the cost of being the peacemaker, the fear of being truly seen, and the challenge of letting go of perfection. Chrissy reflects on her journey into acting, the power of being chosen for a role that mirrored her own struggles, and how her latest children's book is helping the next generation talk about emotions that many of us were taught to suppress. This is an honest, soul-stirring episode about the courage it takes to stop performing and start healing from the inside out.__________________Follow/Watch/Listen/Subscribe: Instagram: @rootedrecoverystoriesTiktok: @patrickcusterprojectYouTube: @rootedrecoverystoriesFacebook: @rootedrecoverystoriesWebsite: www.rootedrecoverystories.com__________________Cast:Patrick Custer - HostInstagram: @thepatrickcusterTiktok: @thepatrickcusterYouTube: @thepatrickcusterFacebook: @thepatrickcusterWebsite: https://linktr.ee/patrickcusterChrissy Metz - GuestInsta: @chrissymetzFacebook: @chrissymetzofficialYoutube: @chrissymetzmusic Tiktok: @chrissymetzX: @chrissymetzWebsite: www.chrissymetzmusic.comSpotify: Chrissy Metz__________________Get Help (addiction, mental health/trauma):Promises Behavioral HealthCall: (888) 648-4098Website: www.promises.comInstagram: @promises_bh__________________About Chrissy Metz: Emmy and two-time Golden Globe nominee Chrissy Metz stars on the award-winning NBC series "This Is Us,” winner of the 2018 and 2019 SAG Award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series and People's Choice Award for "Favorite New TV Drama.” Chrissy recently starred as Joyce Smith in the hit 20th Century Fox faith-based film, BREAKTHROUGH. "For me, I don't start a project unless I have a really clear understanding of who the main characters are and why this is a journey that's necessary for them to take. And why are these both the best and the worst people to be in this series? That's the question I ask myself all the time because you need to know: What are their strengths? What are their weaknesses? What are the dramatic tension points going to be where these specific people can really succeed or really fail in this scenario?I love people who are passionate, and Quentin Tarantino is just so passionate. And I've never been in a writer's room or even really in any kind of development experience where a director was just so passionate and so full of kind of energetic ideas. And that was really inspiring. Somebody who just completely knows their own point of view and gets excited by their own ideas is just fun to watch.I was about to shoot Pet Sematary: Bloodlines. I was finishing up my work on Star Trek 4, which I had to leave to do Pet Sematary, so I had been working with J. J. Abrams closely for a while on the script, and so I just asked if he had any advice, in terms of just practical stuff on set. And I mean, I've been on so many sets, but still, he's a director who's done so many projects. So he did give me some great advice just about, you know, making it through such long days and taking time for yourself and just kind of keeping your sanity that was kind of the focus of the advice. "I think a lot about Barbie and Greta Gerwig. And could a man write and direct like a really funny Barbie movie? Of course. But do I think that a man could have ever created the phenomenon that is Barbie? I don't. Because it was so infused with her authentic female experience in the patriarchy. And she put so much of that into it. And that's really what shines in that movie. And I think that movies like that where you kind of trust in one human creative and let their artistry and humanity shine is when you create these standout pieces of art that really capture imagination and attention.I just don't know why humans always seem intent on replacing themselves. You know, whether it's the industrial revolution or now, the AI revolution, we just can't help ourselves. But I think we need, we need to have we need to have strong regulations in place because there are certainly lots of professions where we certainly will be able to replace people with AI, but why? Why would we want to do that? Having a sense of purpose and the pride we all get from working, regardless of what that job is, is obviously so important. In addition to the money, I don't understand sometimes where people's motivations come from."Lindsey Anderson Beer wrote and executive produced the hit Netflix original dramedy Sierra Burgess is a Loser before making the jump to direct the horror genre with Pet Sematary: Bloodlines, starring Jackson White and Natalie Alyn Lind. "It's such a difficult and huge, huge, huge issue. And for me, it's absolutely not one-sided. And it's not a simple answer. Anybody who thinks that AI is going to completely save us is fooling themselves. And anybody who thinks that AI is just evil or harmful is also overlooking the very obvious benefits from drug and cancer research and other illnesses. And there are so many things that AI can help us solve very quickly that we don't yet have solutions to. That said, AI is made by us and it is filled with our own biases. And when you enable an incredibly smart, but biased and flawed thing to rule your life, that's never going to end up with a good outcome. So I think we need a lot of regulations and that we should be very scared of what happens when we allow AI to become too smart because at that point regulations aren't going to help. I honestly don't know if we've crossed that threshold. If we haven't, we're very close to crossing the threshold, in my opinion, of not being able to control what we've created, and that does scare me.For the creative process in particular, beyond the fact that it wouldn't make any sense for people to use AI because you can't copyright it, so studios and networks wouldn't own their own material, I can't even begin to tell you how many problems I see with using AI in the writing or directing process.I think science fiction is its own animal. This is why it has always been my first love. And it really allows you to think about our connection to the universe, to kind of be a futurist and think about what society could look like or has looked like. And I think there's no other genre for me, at least, where I feel like action and consequence and forecasting and imagination, all of those things can kind of come together in one story. Stories are inherently subjective. There's only one way to tell a great story and that is for the subject and the storyteller to have an authentic and strong point of view."Lindsey Anderson Beer wrote and executive produced the hit Netflix original dramedy Sierra Burgess is a Loser before making the jump to direct the horror genre with Pet Sematary: Bloodlines, starring Jackson White and Natalie Alyn Lind. There's only one way to tell a great story and that is for the subject and the storyteller to have an authentic and strong point of view."www.imdb.com/name/nm5170222/www.creativeprocess.infowww.oneplanetpodcast.orgIG www.instagram.com/creativeprocesspodcast
"I think that the confidence that I'm talking about, in terms of allowing yourself to turn out something that isn't perfect and to still believe in yourself, I think that comes from my love of science and my understanding of the scientific process. So many experiments fail the first time or the second time or the third time. Also, so many startup companies in Silicon Valley fail and then they innovate and they innovate and they innovate and they become big hits. And I think it's the difference between what's called a fixed mindset versus a growth mindset where people think that they either have a fixed amount of talent or they believe that they have a growing amount of talent where more practice and more input can affect the outcome. And I don't believe that human beings have fixed talent. I believe that human beings have growing talent and that they shouldn't be so fearful of just trying and learning and growing."Lindsey Anderson Beer wrote and executive produced the hit Netflix original dramedy Sierra Burgess is a Loser before making the jump to direct the horror genre with Pet Sematary: Bloodlines, starring Jackson White and Natalie Alyn Lind. In this episode I sit down with the multi-talented and amazing Chrissy Metz! You probably know Chrissy from her starring role as Kate in the award-winning NBC hit series "This Is Us." She is an Emmy and two-time Golden Globe nominee and the show was the winner of the 2018 and 2019 SAG Award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensembe in a Drama Series and People's Choice Award for "Favorite New TV Drama." She has also starred as Joyce Smith in the hit 20th Century Fox faith-based film, "Breakthrough," where she performed the song "I'm Standing With You" on their Breakthrough soundtrack, which was written by 10 time Academy Award nominee Diane Warren. Chrissy got to perform that song during the 2019 ACM Awards. She has been in other roles such as "The Last OG" and the NBC hit series "Superstore." Before her role in "This Is Us," she was also best known for her roles in American Horror Story: Freak Show, Sierra Burgess is a Loser, My Name Is Earl, Entourage and many more. But aside from her incredible acting accolades, she is also an amazing singer-songwriter and now a #1 NYTimes best selling author! In this episode you're going to hear the story about how she learned to carry a crown before she could wear one, about her journey on how she became Kate Pearson in that hit show "This Is Us," her musical journey as a singer/songwriter and what she has coming up soon along with great life lessons. Her brand new book that's only been out for about a month or so now is incredible! I got the opportunity to attend one of her book-signings and it was literally a line through the bookstore to meet her and her co-author Bradley Collins who has also been a great friend of mine for years. Sierra Burgess is a Loser needs more than an alternate ending. This movie is the most unrealistic teen movie. Not that the others are much more realistic. But come on! Rob Newton and Alex Tourje have a lot to review and change. Check it out!

PATREON MOVIE DISCUSSION: This movie was selected by our Patreon Supporters over at the Cinematic Doctrine Patreon. Support as little as $3 a month and have your voice heard!Dear Evan Hansen is our most expensive episode. Coming in at a whopping $35 for rentals, as well as 2.5 hours' worth of content, we truly have spent far too much on this episode. But it's all worth it for our Patreon Supporters! We love you all, and that's why we spend this first of three episodes discussing some of the history behind Dear Evan Hansen, how the casting for Evan Hansen immediately kills the movie dead, and the beginnings of what makes this movie so frustrating. Topics: Every year there is a movie that garners the scorn of film-goers. Currently, Dear Evan Hansen has it.Detailing the history behind Dear Evan Hansen, it's musical, it's awards, and now, it's movie.Ben Platt, the 28-year-old actor playing Evan Hansen, who is 17 during the events of the film, looks to be in his mid-30's based upon the hair, make-up, wardrobe, and camera lenses used throughout the movie. It never stops being a distraction.Daniel found Dear Evan Hansen, "very morally troubling and borderline disturbing at times for various reasons."Melvin likes movies where someone morally reprehensible builds a house of cards, and even audibly exclaimed to his wife while watching the movie, "See, this is awesome! I love this stuff!". So, in that respect, there are some things about Dear Evan Hansen he enjoyed. There are a lot of similarities between Dear Evan Hansen and a little-known Netflix movie called Sierra Burgess is a Loser, another villainous "house of cards" movie Melvin enjoyed. The movie really expects its audience to fill in the gaps for so many hard issues, all on top of the fact that Ben Platt looks way too old to perform as an older teen.Although the movie has a juvenile perspective to mental health and social issues, some things work like the song 'Requiem', where each family member sings their response to Connor's suicide, and how not everyone responds to the death of a family member in the same way.The song 'Sincerely Me' captures a bit of the dark-comedy aspect both Melvin and Daniel wanted throughout the movie.Daniel, on the topic of the many hard-hitting themes in the movie, "It's not examined at all. Nothing in this movie is examined. That's one of the problems."Recommendations: Harold Lindsell's "Lindsell Study Bible: The Living Bible, Paraphrased - Reference Edition"The Ezra Klein Show - "The Case Against Loving Your Job"Jenny Nicholson's "A Needlessly Thorough Roast of Dear Evan Hansen"Support on Patreon for Unique Perks! Have you always wondered what the movie is that birthed this podcast? Well, it's this one: a 2018 Netflix, synth-pop dream starring Shannon Purser and our main man Noah Centineo (in probably the only role we actually tolerate him).
Kalen and I review this teen romcom, starring Shannon Purser from Stranger Things.wnwypodcast@outlook.com, Instagram, wnwypodcast.com Promotion - Don't Look Under the Internet.
We don't have a full episode this week. As a continuation of our conversation about Netflix Rom-coms, Hannah and I talk about the two Cyrano De Bergerac teen romantic comedy adaptations that are on Netflix right now. Why is Sierra Burgess seen as a trashy story about catfishing where The Half of it is seen as a prestige, award-winning auteurist work from Alice Wu? Special thanks to Editor Logan McBride Tweet @TalkingTropes to give us your opinions on Cyrano, Sierra, and Ellie
Tropes and clichés abound in this particular Netflix genre. What started the trend of releasing these Teen romantic comedies exclusively on Netflix? What marketing and development strategies led to the recent success of The Kissing Booth and To All the Boys as franchise films? Besides Noah Centineo and Jacob Elordi's abs. Also, what do we do with all the low-self-esteem rom coms like Sierra Burgess, Tall Girl, and Dumplin'? Let us know if you want us to do a deep dive into the TV Tropes for any of these movies in the comments below! Tweet at us if you have an idea of what trope we should talk about next! @talkingTropes Watch the video podcast here: https://youtu.be/IyezQ5W14hs Special thanks to our Editor, Logan McBride
In part 2, Katie and I discuss the CINEMATIC MASTERPIECE "To All the Boys I've Loved Before," the not-so-cinematic masterpiece "Sierra Burgess is a Big Bully"- ahem I mean Loser, and more movies you have probably heard of. Be ready to leave inspired as we highlight the best tweets and speeches of Noah's career - you don't want to miss out on this one. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/emily5714/message
Reb, Cav, and special guest Andrew Projansky make the argument for why Sierra Burgess is a Loser is not only the worst adaptation of all time, but quite possibly the worst film of all time.
This week we navigate the reality of plus size dating and discuss "Sierra Burgess is a Looser"
Jonelle and Eliza take on a Netflix battle of the Cyrano wits ... Sierra Burgess (2018) versus The Half of It (2020). Conversation topics include the importance of specificity; mean-spirited depiction of Gen Z; and why Sierra Burgess is, indeed, a loser. Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/romcomkilljoys)
By now many of you have heard or seen 2018's, "Sierra Burgess is a Loser" get ripped to shreds for being a poor adaptation of the classic play, "Cyrano Bergerac" as well as such things as condoning catfishing, psychological manipulation, transphobia, slut shaming, etc. and why these features don't make for a good teen rom-com. But have you considered that this movie isn't that... Sierra Burgess is not a romantic teen comedy, but instead an origin story for one of the worlds most prolific criminals? Join the boys as we discuss the implications of sociopath Sierra Burgess' actions, the history behind the adaptation, and why it's a bad movie anyway. Hit the boys up on social media! This week we watched "Sierra Burgess Is a Loser" and wished we hadn't. Seriously, this film is terrible. We tried to fix this film gang, we really did, but honestly, it was pretty tough, this film sucks real bad. We also discuss synth-pop music, Corsa at McDonald's behaviour and why this film should have been 20 minutes long. Music is 'Fall For Me' by Syllvie. Listen to their debut EP 'Ouch' on Spotify. While Joe refuses to read a Victorian-era play, he's more than happy to watch film adaptations of them! This week we're checking out a plethora of YA tropes: the collaboration between suitors in an impersonation ruse, a "tricky kiss" and an epistolary romance. On one side of the ring is Sierra Burgess Is A Loser, one of our few remaining Noah Centineo joints, which gets as many things right as it does wrong (pour one out for the disinterest in female friendships!). On the other is the queer, POC frontedThe Half Of It, which is a warm, delightful film. Aside from a slightly frustrating climax, this is an absolute gem and features one of the best friendships we've ever seen on the show.In homework: Brenna has finished Clap When You Land by Elizabeth Acevedo (mentioned in the May/June forecast) and "similar to The Virgin Suicides" Long Live The Tribe of Fatherless Girls by Tier Kiera Madden. Joe, meanwhile, advocates for the fantasy escapism of House of Salt and Sorrows by Erin A. Craig.Wanna connect with the show? Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) talk about why Sierra Burgess Is A Loser Should've Been Gay. We talk about the hate to love story between Sierra and Veronica, how falling in love with someone via text is inherently queer and all of the gay staring that occurs between Sierra and Veronica throughout the film. From the first time Sierra confidently tells Veronica she'll meet her for tutoring after school, to their games of footsie, to their first date at a high school party, Sierra and Veronica are end game. Oh and Sierra writes the song Sunflower just for her. So gay. Follow along on Twitter @lezhangoutpod and Facebook and Instagram (@lezhangoutpod). Come see us live in LA March 12th at bit.ly/lezla.
