Having recently been invited to attend preview screenings of Disney's MOANA 2 and MUFASA: THE LION KING, Mickey-Jo felt struck by a recent decline in the quality of Disney's cinematic scores. With a discernible link to the world of musical theatre, today he is questioning the circumstances and business decisions which led to these results from songwriters including Lin Manuel Miranda (Hamilton, Encanto), Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear (The Unofficial Bridgerton Musical) and Benj Pasek and Justin Paul (Dear Evan Hansen, The Greatest Showman).Stay tuned for Mickey-Jo's thoughts and make sure to share yours in the comments section below.About Mickey-Jo:As one of the leading voices in theatre criticism on a social platform, Mickey-Jo is pioneering a new medium for a dwindling field. Tom Holland appeared on the Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon and with a drum roll announced that Spider-Man 4 officially begins shooting next summer. This information is coupled with an announcement from Sony that the release date is July 24, 2026. 20th Century Studios President Steve Asbell sat down with The Hollywood Reporter recently to discuss the future of their filmmaking division under Disney. Asbell seemed to Mirror other disney subsidiaries with it's assurance that a focus on franchise films is the path of the future. They will likely continue franchises such as Avatar, the Alien-verse, and Planet of the Apes, plus Kenneth Branagh's Agatha Christie mystery adaptations will continue though it's not clear if Branagh is attached. Among other films discussed were a Master and Commander prequel, Something with Die Hard, the next Predator movie (two are coming out and one is a secret), and the possibility of a Speed 3. Writer Steven Knight has left the Rey Star Wars movie. Knight replaced the original screenwriters just last March, but this looks to be another delay to the development of the film. Notably Knight has been busy, working on the screenplays for the Peaky Blinders feature film, an upcoming biopic starring Angelina Jolie, and several tv series. Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy is still slated to direct the future Rey movie. Venom: The Last Dance stumbled a bit in its choreography during last week's release in the U.S. with a $51 million dollar opening, but danced to success globally for a total $175 million including $46 million in China, which is the best superhero movie opening in that country since 2019. Sony is pleased with these numbers and well they should be, as the movie did take the top spot over Smile 2, which fell 59 percent. Universal's Oscar baby Conclave opened to $6.5 million, which tied it with The Wild Robot's fifth weekend's earnings. And the Andrew Garfield/Florence Pugh romantic drama We Live in Time came in fifth with $4.8 million. While promoting Robert Zemeckis' film Here, Paul Bettany confirmed that production begins on the Vision series in 2025. Chris Hemsworth is in talks to star in Disney's upcoming Prince Charming movie with Paul King attached to direct. AppleTV+ has unveiled a new trailer for Severance season 2. Severance will premiere on the streamer on Jan. 17, 2025, followed by an episode every Friday through March 21 for a 10 episode season. Ahead of its season 6 debut in December, drama series Virgin River has been renewed for a seventh season at Netflix. With the early renewal, Virgin River becomes Netflix's longest-running current original scripted series. An action comedy film adaptation of retro video game Oregon Trail is in early development at Apple. Will Speck and Josh Gordon are attached to direct and produce. EGOT winners Benj Pasek and Justin Paul will provide original music and produce via their Ampersand production banner. Sources tell The Hollywood Reporter that the movie will feature a couple of original musical numbers Michael Cera, William H. Macy, and Emilia Jones have joined the cast of Paramount's The Running Man. Netflix has renewed its animated series Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft for a second season. The pickup was a relatively quick one, coming just two weeks after the eight-episode first season premiered. First images have surfaced from Spider-Noir, the Amazon series that will star Nicolas Cage in the title role. Sources tell Deadline that a new English-language Squid Game series is in the works at Netflix, with David Fincher coming on to develop it. Sony Pictures announced that Jumanji 3 is set to hit theaters Dec. 11, 2026. Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, Jack Black and Karen Gillan starred in the first two films and are expected to return, as is director Jake Kasdan, who helmed both features.
The very first Australian production of the smash-hit coming-of-age musical Dear Evan Hansen has just opened in Sydney. The Broadway production won six Tony Awards, including one for the show's book writer, Steven Levenson. Steven also wrote the screenplay for Tick, Tick… Boom! — a musical film inspired by the life of Jonathan Larson (Rent). Also, Mary Coustas is the creator of the big-haired, outspoken Greek Australian Effie who first took on the world in a stage show called Wogs Out of Work in 1987. She recently revealed a new persona on stage: her own, in her one-woman show This Is Personal. Her new show as Effie, now on tour, is called Upyourselfness.

The live-action musical La La Land was primed to take over the 89th Academy Awards as the frontrunner for Best Picture, and its chances of winning multiple awards included Best Original Song, where two tunes from the movie were nominated. On this episode, learn more about the men who created those songs -- Justin Hurwitz, Benj Pasek, and Justin Paul -- and the writers of the other three nominated songs. Lin-Manuel Miranda earned his first Oscar nomination that year, as did Justin Timberlake for the most popular song of 2016.
Chris Feil joins Katey to break down all the premieres announced for festivals in Venice, Toronto and beyond, and go deep on William S. Burroughs's Queer, soon to be a film from Luca Guadagnino. Then, Katey talks to songwriters Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, who are Emmy-nominated for their Only Murders in the Building original song "Which of the Pickwick Triplets Did It". They will be in the extremely rare class of EGOT winners if they take home the Emmy — but they have to get past their friend and collaborator Sara Bareilles first. In which the Mister and Monsters join me in reviewing THE GREATEST SHOWMAN (2017), from writers Jenny Bicks and Bill Condon, the film is directed by Michael Gracey. A poor young man grows up to become the famed P.T. Barnum (Hugh Jackman ) in this musical biopic on the man who crafted the art of the spectacle through his sensational presentations of oddities. Michelle Williams, Zac Efron, Rebecca Ferguson and Zendaya round out the primary roles in the story and include music from Benj Pasek and Justin Paul who went on to win Academy Awards for their music in LA LA LAND. This is the second half of my conversation with author Elysa Gardner whose new book is titled: Magic To Do — Pippin's Fantastic, Fraught, Journey To Broadway And Beyond. On our previous episode Elysa shared the story of how PIPPIN's composer & lyricist, Stephen Schwartz, first began work on the show when he was a student at Carnegie Tech (soon to be Carnegie Mellon) University, where an early and very different version of PIPPIN was first produced. After graduating and returning home to NYC Schwartz began creating an all new version of the show but quickly got sidetracked by Godspell. The massive success of that little Off-Broadway musical and its chart topping hit song, coupled with his high profile collaboration creating lyrics for Leonard Bernstein's MASS moved Stephen Schwartz into the front ranks of musical theater songwriters, and quickly led to PIPPIN being optioned for Broadway with a new book by Roger O'Hirson, and to be directed & choreographed by then five time Tony Award winner Bob Fosse. This set the stage for a now legendary backstage power struggle between the 23 year old wunderkind composer and the masterful Broadway showman and hitmaker. And that's where we pick up our conversation today. Somehow their contentious and difficult collaboration produced one of the most popular, long-running, and influential musicals of the Modern Era, and later in the episode Elysa and I explore the now 50 year legacy of PIPPIN, especially how it has served as a tremendous inspiration to several generations of Broadway show makers such as Jeanine Tesori and Benj Pasek & Justin Paul, and how it paved the way to the pop music inflected musicals of today. Our friend Dom Lewis is back again to lift our holiday spirits up with not one, but TWO new scores that aim to spread some festive cheer. We dig into his scores to Spirited and Violent Night. One is a musical comedy, the other a violent action flick done in the spirit of Die Hard. For Spirited, Dom scored his first musical and we talk about the composer's role in a musical when it comes to navigating around the songs that were written by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul. We also discuss leaning into that heartwarming feel of Christmas scores without getting too schmaltzy, plus the excitement of writing a big orchestral score with choir that taps into the genre. For Violent Night we talk about creating a score that embraces the Christmas feel, but how it needed to be over the top in a very operatic way for this balls-to-the-wall action flick that subverts the genre. Dom talks about all the differences in writing this score vs Spirited, including how he recorded himself for the entire choir and recorded an original song. It's always a pleasure to have Dom sit down and chat, and such a nice way to kick of the holiday season! A Film.Music.Media Interview | Produced & Presented by Kaya Savas

This might be our most important, most helpful podcast yet. Blake, Kofi & Rich are joined by Eric Windeler, co-founder of the Canadian youth mental health initiative Jack.org, to discuss our first musical, Dear Evan Hansen. The movie follows an anxious, isolated high-school student (Ben Platt) through an increasingly complex web of deception when a letter he writes to himself is misinterpreted as the suicide note of a fellow schoolmate (Colton Ryan). Directed by Stephen Chbosky, with a screenplay by Steven Levenson and songs by Benj Pasek & Justin Paul, Dear Evan Hansen is a film that ought to provoke crucial conversations between parents and kids about their struggles. After all, one in seven Canadian youth reports having suicidal thoughts. It's the leading cause of death for young people in Canada. Analise Scarpaci is a Broadway star who has three shows already under belt. She made her broadway debut in middle school where she was part of the cast of a Christmas Story. The musical was based on the loved book with music written by extremely innovative Benj Pasek and Justin Paul. Scarpaci's journey with Broadway continued when she was a Swing (someone who covers multiple tracks) in Matilda: The Musical. She was one of those lucky kids who got to ride one of those swings on stage when she went on. Not only did Scarpaci star in the show on Broadway, but she also travelled on the national tour of show as well. Her latest project was portraying the role of Lydia Hillard in Mrs. Doubtfire: The Musical. In this show she starred beside Broadway royalty, Rob McClure and Jenn Gambatese. (They played Daniel/Mrs. Doubtfire and Miranda Hillard). The original show was a huge part of her life growing up and getting to be in the show on Broadway was a true honor for her. Besides her professional career, Scarpaci also has Crohn's Disease (just like me), and is passionate about sharing awareness for IBD with the Broadway community. Lastly, fans can catch her debut EP called Pathetic Little Dreamer which is out now wherever you listen to your music. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/jayme-starr/support
Martha collaborates with music producer and composer, Emmanuel Eze, to cover 'Only Us' from the Tony Award-winning Broadway musical, Dear Evan Hansen (original music by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul). Listen to the story behind the music on #EP7 Making Music and Making Friends with Emmanuel Eze
DEAR EVAN HANSEN COMPOSER: Benj Pasek & Justin Paul LYRICIST: Benj Pasek & Justin Paul BOOK: Steven Levenson DIRECTOR: Michael Greif CHOREOGRAPHER: Danny Mefford PRINCIPLE CAST: Rachel Bay Jones (Heidi), Laura Dreyfuss (Zoe), Ben Platt (Evan), OPENING DATE: Nov 14, 2016 CLOSING DATE: Still running as of publication PERFORMANCES: Still running as of publication SYNOPSIS: Evan Hansen is a high schooler struggling with both peer and self-acceptance. When a fellow student takes his own life, Evan begins to create a fictional friendship with the dead student, tricking not only the student's family but the whole world. Producer Stacey Mindich revolutionized the relationship between Broadway musicals and their young fans, making recordings available to the public alongside the announcement of the show's first tryout, attempting to reflect their experiences on stage without parodying or satirizing them, and even leading a video campaign which includes fan videos in the show's projection design. Frederick D. Miller explores the ways Dear Evan Hansen comments on a societal reliance on social media while existing in an industry increasingly dependent upon social media to profit and survive. Young writers Benj Pasek, Justin Paul, and Steven Levenson provided nuanced observations on the budding culture around social media without moralizing or criticizing. It was this musical that then fostered the growth of such musicals as Joe Iconis' Be More Chill. Frederick D. Miller is an undergraduate theatre major at the Pennsylvania State University. A dramaturg, Miller's work focuses on twentieth- and twenty-first-century American theatre. His work has informed productions of Angels in America, A Little Night Music, To Kill a Mockingbird, and Caroline, or Change. He is the regional recipient and national semi-finalist for the 2020 KC/ACTF Award for Outstanding Dramaturgy, and a project associate for the #HereToo Project, which amplifies youth activists' voices through performance. JERSEY BOYS COMPOSER: Bob Gaudio LYRICIST: Bob Crewe BOOK: Marshall Brickman, Rick Elice DIRECTOR: Des McAnuff CHOREOGRAPHER: Sergio Trujillo PRINCIPLE CAST: Christian Hoff (Tommy), Daniel Reichard (Bob), John Lloyd Young (Frankie) OPENING DATE: Nov 06, 2005 CLOSING DATE: Jan 15, 2017 PERFORMANCES: 4,642 SYNOPSIS: The rise and fall of The Four Seasons, a real-life band that dominated the 1960s music scene, is told through rotating narrators, who all offer their own theories as to why the band succeeded and subsequently dissolved. The early 2000s saw an onslaught of failed jukebox musicals which aimed to capitalize on the disposable income of former rock fans by luring them to the theatre with familiar songs. Jersey Boys was successful because it tells the true, engrossing story of the Four Seasons and juxtaposes the violence of the narrative against the sterile, cherry tunes for which the band was known. Rick Elice examines how contradicting stories from the three living band members lent the show a multi-perspective narrative frame. The show set the standard for jukebox musicals which tell the story of the artists behind the music and led a fleet of such shows to Broadway for decades such as Beautiful and Tina. Rick Elice co-wrote Jersey Boys (winner 2006 Tony Award, 2007 Grammy Award and 2009 Olivier Award for Best Musical) with Marshall Brickman. His play, Peter and the Starcatcher, received nine 2012 Tony Award nominations (including two for Rick) and won five, more than any play of the season. It's currently playing in New York and on tour across North America. Also on Broadway, Elice wrote The Addams Family (with Marshall Brickman, music and lyrics by Andrew Lippa), currently touring North America, with productions in Europe and South America. In 2014, the Old Globe Theatre in San Diego presented the world premiere of his new musical, Dog and Pony (music and lyrics by Michael Patrick Walker). Rick is currently writing a musical for Disney Theatricals with Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, based on the film Make Believe, and Super Fly (co-written with Seth Zvi Rosenfeld), directed and choreographed by modern dance legend, Bill T. Jones. Heartfelt thanks to those whose work in the theatre makes him grateful for the day he was born: Sondheim, Stoppard, Bennett, Prince, Fosse, Robbins, Nichols, Tune, Nunn, Laurents, Stone, Kushner, Taymor, Papp, Schumacher, Schneider, Coyne, Brickman, Timbers and Rees. Rick thinks about them a lot. He never thought about Jersey much. He does now. SOURCES Jersey Boys, Original Cast Recording. In which the Mister and Monsters join me in reviewing DEAR EVAN HANSEN (2021). The film, directed by Stephen Chbosky and screenplay credit to Steven Levenson, is based on the musical stage play with music and lyrics by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul. The film adaptation of the Tony and Grammy Award-winning musical, DEAR EVAN HANSEN, follows the story of Evan Hansen (Ben Platt), a young man with deep social anxiety and possible other issues, who is trying to navigate his senior year and keep his head above water. One day, a letter assignment from his therapist winds up in someone else's hands and this begins a chain of events that seem to snowball out of Evan's control and an initial act of compassion spins into something that he eventually has to decide to face up to. A strong ensemble that includes Julianne Moore, Kaitlyn Dever, Amy Adams, Danny Pino, Amandla Stenberg, Colton Ryan and Nik Dodani make this a MUST WATCH. The film has a run time of 2 h 17 m, is rated PG-13 and is currently streaming on HBO Max . Please note there are SPOILERS in this review. Opening intro music: GOAT by Wayne Jones, courtesy of YouTube Audio Library. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/jokagoge/support

In this episode Alby speaks to Oscar, Grammy, Tony, and Golden Globe Award-winning songwriter Benj Pasek, best known for his work on La La Land and Dear Evan Hansen, the play that inspired this conversation. In this conversation, Benj explores how our modern society, characterised by a lack of community and connection, pushes people to alternative ways of connection through the prism of grief. And explains how, when people are moving through real pain, whether in moments of depression or grief, we should resist from jumping into action and fixing: "instead of throwing a rope down a well to lift someone out, it's better to climb down and just sit with them". We hope you enjoy it.

That all changed when Juliana Harkavy was added to the cast as Dinah Drake, otherwise known in the comics as the first Black Canary. However, that doesn't necessarily mean there will be a Green Arrow-Black Canary romance, especially considering the show has never been beholden to the comics. “The idea that Oliver would end up with the Black Canary being Katie Cassidy or any new iteration thereof? To me, it could happen, it could not, but it's certainly not destined to happen or predesigned to happen,” Amell tells EW. Teri Hatcher has already been confirmed to debut later this season in an as-yet unspecified villain role.It doesn't take much to connect those dots, and arise at the natural question: Will “Supergirl” feature an on-screen reunion between Cain and Hatcher, who starred in “Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman” from 1993 to 1997? “We'd love to,” “Supergirl” executive producer Andrew Kreisberg said of a Cain/Hatcher scene on “Supergirl.” “There's a plan — if we can execute the plan.” Link:http://www.cbr.com/supergirl-dean-cain-teri-hatcher-lois-and-clark-reunion/ EP HOPES FOR ‘TRUE FOUR-WAY' ARROWVERSE CROSSOVER (Date: 24 Feb 2017) For the next full-scale Arrowverse crossover — which is tradition holds, will likely be in the fall — the creative forces behind the show are hoping to fully involve all four series, according to Andrew Kreisberg, an executive producer on each one of the shows. With the early renewals, Kreisberg explained, the shows can take advantage of pre-planned off-days in production to accommodate the cast members who are appearing on multiple shows in a short time, something that was particularly difficult last year with “Supergirl,” since series lead Melissa Benoist appeared in both a normal episode of her show, and then as a guest on “The Flash,” ‘Arrow' and ‘Legends.' ‘Supergirl' was the show we needed to shut down the most, and it was the one we didn't have any opportunity to,” Kreisberg said. “So now that we've gotten the early pick up and we've started designing the seasons, we're building in those dark days — and actually more dark days on ‘Supergirl' than the other shows — to make it a little easier.” Link:http://www.cbr.com/andrew-kreisberg-hopes-four-way-arrowverse-crossover-supergirl-flash-arrow-legends/ ‘Black Lightning' Finds Its Lead: Cress Williams Cast As Jefferson In the CW Pilot (Date: 24 Feb 2017) Hart of Dixie alum Cress Williams is back at the CW as the title character in Black Lightning, the network's DC drama pilot from Greg Berlanti, king of the CW's DC universe, and the Being Mary Jane duo of Mara Brock Akil and Salim Akil. Link:http://deadline.com/2017/02/black-lightning-cress-williams-cast-jefferson-cw-pilot-1201971415/ ‘Black Lightning': Nafessa Williams & China Anne McClain To Star As Jefferson's Daughters In the CW Pilot (Date: 02 March 2017) Nafessa Williams (Code Black) and China Anne McClain (House of Payne) have landed leads opposite Cress Williams in Black Lightning, the CW's DC drama pilot.McCain plays Jefferson's younger daughter, the teenage Jennifer Piere, an independent, outspoken scholar-athlete with a wild streak of her own. Williams is Anissa Pierce — passionate and quick-witted, Jefferson's twenty-something daughter balances the demands of medical school with her job teaching part-time at her father's school. In the DC comics, Anissa and Jennifer follow in their father's footsteps and become superheroes, taking on the names of Thunder and Lightning, respectively. That's something of interesting flaw in continuity, so will it be something that Supergirl will address? According to executive producer Andrew Kriesberg: it won't be. According to Kriesberg, “the problem with that is if we do that once, we're going to open the floodgates of insanity." According to Kriesberg, it would take “a really good story” for Supergirl to get alternate versions of Barry or Oliver on the show; or conversly, an alternate version of Kara on Earth 1. In short: it would have to be an event. The story really centers around Iris,” said Helbing. “Aside from Barry and Kara, Iris plays a huge role in the musical.” The episode will also feature songs from “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend's” Rachel Bloom and the “La La Land” songwriting duo of Benj Pasek and Justin Paul. Link:http://www.cbr.com/iris-west-flash-supergirl-musical-episode/ Supergirl taps iZombie star as potential DC villain (Date: 01 March 2017) Rahul Kohli, who plays medical examiner Dr. Ravi Chakrabarti on The CW zombie series, will play Jack Spheer, a charismatic tech genius who has spent decades working on a medical innovation that will eradicate major illnesses and change the face of the world – if it works. In the comics, Spheer's invention mutated him into the villain known as Biomax, who had the power of mind control. It's unclear whether his character on the show will follow the same path. Kohli will appear in episode 18, titled “Ace Reporter,” which executive producer Andrew Kreisberg recently revealed will heavily feature Kara's journalism side. As there is no Batman in the Arrowvrse, this Talia instead finds herself involved with Green arrow. This season, it's been revealed that she was the one who rescued Oliver from Ishmael Gregor and then proceeded to push him into fulfilling his destiny. Talia has trained Oliver, but she's also an al Ghul. Can she be trusted? Does the apple fall far from the psychotic family tree? Doig recently spoke with CBR about making Talia a badass, mentoring Oliver, her possible connections to Prometheus and the inevitable showdown with Nyssa. Link:http://www.cbr.com/interview-arrow-lexa-doig-talia-al-ghul/ ARROW'S PROMETHEUS SPEAKS OUT ABOUT HIS STUNNING IDENTITY REVEAL (Date: 01 March 2017) Speaking to CBR and other reporters, Segarra opened up about his role as Prometheus and how he balanced Adrian Chase's two very different identities. He also shared some stories about how and when he learned about the big twist, as well as why he studied up on Vigilante before arriving in Vancouver to start filming Season 5. “I'm telling them, ‘Oh, I'm playing this guy… I don't really know too much about him, but who knows? It'll be fun, right?' And then they announced Adrian Chase: Vigilante. And I'm like, ‘Oh my gosh, I'm playing Vigilante!' So now, I get to Vancouver, I think I'm playing this guy Vigilante. That's who everybody thought, right? So I start reading ‘Vigilante' comics and reading about Chase and reading about the history of these guys. Then I get to work and I'm talking to Marc. I'm like, ‘Marc, man, I'm really doing my research. I'm really being studious about this Vigilante guy.' And he's like, ‘What do you mean?' And I'm like, ‘Oh, dude, you announced it finally! I'm going to be a great Adrian Chase: Vigilante!' And he says, ‘That's not who you're playing.' ‘What?!' He's like, ‘Yeah, you're playing this guy.' And that's when they took me out on the city and they told me everything. So, to put it this way, me and my wife and my doggie, we moved over to Vancouver thinking one thing and it was revealed once I got here who I was actually playing. That whole journey began at that moment. I feel I'll always look back and laugh at this.” Link:http://www.cbr.com/arrow-prometheus-josh-segarra-adrian-chase-fighting-fire-with-fire-susan-williams-oliver-queen-artemis-interview/ ARROW EP WENDY MERICLE ADDRESSES PROMETHEUS' IDENTITY & MOTIVATIONS (Date: 01 March 2017) In the wake of this stunning reveal, executive producer Wendy Mericle spoke to CBR and other reporters about what's in store for Team Arrow now that Prometheus' identity is out in the open. She addressed why she and the other showrunners made Chase Prometheus instead of Vigilante, why those chose now to make this reveal, what drives Chase to torture Oliver Queen and more. Why make Chase Prometheus instead of Vigilante? “I think one of the reasons we did that was because everyone would be thinking, “Of course he's Vigilante!” Adrian Chase is Vigilante in the comic books, as you pointed out, and we thought it would be a really fun sort of twist to do what we've always done on the show, which is to take the comic book mythology and turn it on its head and see what kind of story we could mine from a surprise like that. It was also just something different for this season. We wanted to change up how we introduced the big bad and change up when we did it and how we did it. Hopefully, we succeeded in that this year.” She also said that Prometheus is going to mess with Lance as well. That certainly appears to match the aesthetic of director Patty Jenkins' film. Also notable is Diana's weapons of choice: Although her famed Lasso of Truth is slung on her belt, she wields a sword and shield, emphasizing her role as a warrior. In addition to the Amazon Princess, there will also be Pop! figures of Steve Trevor and Queen Hippolyta. CURRENT EPISODE DC EASTER EGGS & POP CULTURE REFERENCES Season Episode “Second Chances” (Date: 01 Feb 2017) Article: http://comicbook.com/2017/02/02/arrow-easter-eggs-and-things-you-might-have-missed-in-second-cha/ HUB CITY - Hub City, a fictional city in the DC Universe, is best known as the home to The Question, a self-taught urban shaman. The last time we saw the city on Arrow was when Esrin Fortuna helped Oliver take on Damien Darhk...and of course, when Hub City started to show up in showrunner Marc Guggenheim's tweets this year, there was plenty of speculation that he was teasing The Question. Turns out, he was teasing the Black Canary! BIG BELLY BURGER - Big Belly Burger, a fictional fast-food restaurant in the DC Universe, is the fast food of choice for people who are in hiding, in jail, or otherwise cut off from the world on The Flash. Here, we saw Team Arrow hanging out there in Hub City while Felicity got it delivered to her in the Arrowcave during her side quest. FAMILY SECRET - When Talia refers to her agelessness as a "family secret," it's the kind of cutesy clue that Nyssa used to drop in her early appearances, where she didn't directly name-drop Ra's al Ghul or the Lazarus Pit, but made references that were pretty clear to people in the know. Back then, of course, we always wondered whether Ra's would ever make an appearance. Now, he's come and gone, and we know that this kind of vague dialogue is mostly to keep continuity tidy so that Oliver doesn't realize exactly who he's dealing with when Ra's and Nyssa come in later. THE FLASH & CAPTAIN SINGH - In what Marc Guggenheim tweeted was the quickest crossover Arrow has ever done with The Flash, we got to see Barry speed (in costume) into his boss's office to vouch for Green Arrow. What's nice to see is Captain Singh, Barry's boss, who hasn't been seen much this season. It felt a bit like last night, when the long-absent Miss Tessmacher from Supergirl had a quick cameo on The Flash. SONUS - Sean Sonus, alias Discord is a sonic villain who fights Green Arrow and Black Canary. He first appeared in Green Arrow and Black Canary #15, and was co-created by Arrow EP Andrew Kreisberg and artist Mike Norton. DINAH DRAKE - "Dinah Drake" is actually the name of the original/Earth-2 Black Canary, who existed in the comics before Dinah Lance did. ARROW NEWS: New Arrow Episode Gets A Russian Title As It Begins Production (Date: 30 Jan 2017) Marc Guggenheim, the show's executive producer, shared a cover of the new episode's script, and let fans know that it was beginning production. Flashbacks reveal how Rene went from simple family man to a hero named Wild Dog. Meanwhile, Oliver (Stephen Amell) must deal with the perpetrator behind the attack and realizes the best way to do so is as Mayor Queen instead of the Green Arrow. Actually, when TVLine last spoke to Wendy Mericle, the Arrow scribes were in the midst of hashing out a return scenario for Little Miss Benedict Arnold. “We have a really cool, exciting twist for how she's going to reappear,” the EP teased, noting: “The interesting thing about the choices Evelyn has made is that as much as she took the moral high ground when confronting Oliver, she has allied herself with someone who is even worse,” in Prometheus. “She's gone from the frying pan into the fire.” Link:http://tvline.com/2017/01/31/bones-final-season-spoilers-booth-gordon-wyatt/ Wayback Wednesday: Watch The First Ever Trailer For Arrow (Date: 01 Feb 2017) In honor of Wayback Wednesday - and a brand new episode of Arrow tonight - it's about time to take a look back at the first ever trailer for Arrow. This footage was seen in 2012, and it talked a lot about Oliver Queen's return to the real world, after he was thought to be dead. The trailer shows Oliver on the island, beard and all, as well as his assimilation back into society. If that sounds familiar, that's because Dinah Drake is the name of the original Black Canary. Dinah debuted in 1947's “Flash Comics” #86 as Black Canary. Later, she married a man named Larry Lance and subsequently changed her name to Dinah Lance. Inspired by Dinah, her daughter Dinah Laurel Lance would go on to become a founding member of the Justice League. When the New 52 restarted DC Comics' continuity, the Black Canary legacy was retconned, and Dinah Drake was restored as the one and only Black Canary. This New 52 version of Dinah Drake was formerly married to Kurt Lance, but the two divorced. Link:http://www.cbr.com/arrow-tina-boland-black-canary-dinah-drake/ Arrow: What is Helix? (Date: 01 Feb 2017) Helix was a supervillain group led by Dr. Benjamin Love, aka Mr. Bones. The members were six mutated children who had been experimented on and then kidnapped by Love. They grew up to be a rather bizarre cast of characters, including Kritter (a human/dog hybrid) and Baby Boom (a young child who can cause explosions with her mind). It's safe to assume that any future appearances of Helix will certainly be way more grounded in reality - with any mention of the original characters probably being used as online screennames. This is similar to the inclusion of the secret organization Shadowspire in Arrow, which was given a much more realistic makeover. When recently discussing the dynamic between Felicity and Diggle going forward, Arrow executive-producer Wendy Mericle mentioned that the events in 'Second Chances' will play into the rest of the season. "Part of what kicks [Felicity] off down this darker path is she's going to find evidence to exonerate him -- and [Diggle's] going to have to deal with the fallout of the fact that Felicity is now going down a questionable path in part because of him." With that in mind, there's a very good chance that tonight's episode will not be the last time we hear of Helix on Arrow. Heroes Unite.” In the episode, a White Martian arrives in National City to capture M'gann and return her to Mars, where she's to be punished as a traitor. Unwilling to allow that to happen, Hank Henshaw and Supergirl bring M'gann to the Department of Extra-Normal Operations for protection, only for circumstances to turn from bad to worse. So there's a fair amount of Flash-ness going on in Legends. I wish I could say that we were so smart to take advantage of the new timeslot and do that, but we weren't that smart. We just had already sort of been doing that organically anyway when we found out about the new timeslot. I will say this: There's a love scene in episode 11 and we were in the editing room on it — it's a love scene, it gets a little steamy — and I was joking, ‘Let's take that 9 p.m. timeslot out for a spin.'” The article has the audio of the interview with Guggenheim. As for when we'll get to see the duo in action, it looks like episode twelve, titled "Untouchable," is a good bet as it'll feature a subplot with the Scarlet Speedster helping Kid Flash elevate his game to the next level. Check out the new "Lightning Strikes Twice" poster. Link:https://www.comicbookmovie.com/tv/dc/the_flash/two-speedsters-are-better-than-one-on-this-electrifying-new-a148532 The Flash: Robbie Amell teases his upcoming return (Date: 29 Jan 2017) Earlier this month, EW exclusively revealed that Robbie Amell is returning to The Flash for an upcoming episode. Details on his return are still scarce, but the actor gave EW a little tease of what to expect. “I was there last week,” he shared at Honda's “Hockey Goes Hollywood” event in Los Angeles. “I can tell you that my scenes are with Grant [Gustin] and Danielle [Panabaker]. And I may or may not be alive.” That last part is key, considering the last we saw of Ronnie, he died as a result of destroying the singularity that opened up the path to Earth-2, where that planet's Ronnie was a villain named Deathstorm. Being back on Flash is always a treat for Amell, who got to catch up with his TV wife and former superhero partner and have his first true Ronnie and Barry scene. The project comes from Greg Berlanti, king of the CW's DC universe. Fox brass ultimately decided that the superhero show was not a good fit. The CW is home of Berlanti Prods.'s four DC/WBTV superhero series — Supergirl, Arrow, The Flash and Legends of Tomorrow, which Berlanti also co-created. That makes the network a suitable home for Black Lightning, which would give the CW's DC universe its first major African American superhero. Black Lightning would be the only black superhero toplining his own broadcast series and the second currently on TV, joining Marvel's Luke Cage on Netflix.
