Day 2 features a loving-kindness affirmation practice—a single phrase to steady the mind and soften self-criticism. Inspired by the Gita's teaching of friendliness and compassion toward all beings and informed by modern RCT reviews of loving-kindness interventions. ABOUT THIS WEEK'S LOVING-KINDNESS JOURNEY Welcome to Loving-Kindness Meditation: A Daily Heart-Opening Series—a 7-day journey into the ancient practice of cultivating a steady, compassionate heart. This isn't "be positive" meditation, and it isn't personality-based inspiration. It's a classical inner training—rooted in timeless yogic reflections on maitrī (friendliness), compassion, joy, and equanimity—so your mind becomes clearer, your nervous system steadier, and your relationships more spacious. Across this week, you'll build a simple, repeatable heart practice using one focused technique each day: a loving-kindness visualization, a single phrase of kindness, calming breathwork, a heart-opening mudra, a heart-center (4th chakra) nurture practice, a layered "heart stack" you can use anytime, and a gentle weekly review to embody what you've learned. Come as you are—guarded, tender, hopeful, tired, or open. Loving-kindness doesn't require a perfect mood. It only asks for a sincere return. In just a few minutes each day, you'll practice opening the heart with steadiness—so compassion becomes less of an idea and more of a lived inner home. This is day 2 of a 7-day meditation series, "Loving-Kindness Meditation: A Daily Heart-Opening Series" episodes 3465-3471. THIS WEEK'S CHALLENGE - "META-MICRO MISSION" Each day, send one tiny ripple of kindness: silently offer a loving-kindness phrase to yourself, a neutral person, and a difficult moment (not necessarily a difficult person). Keep it light—3 breaths each— and track your streak with a simple checkmark. THIS WEEK'S MEDITATION JOURNEY Day 1: Compassion Visualization Day 2: Affirmation: "My heart is open and safe." Day 3: Heart Coherent Breath: Inhale for 5, Exhale for 5, Repeat for 10 rounds. (Option: inhale "soften, exhale "kindness.") Day 4: Lotus mudra for opening your heart Day 5: Fourth chakra for love and gratitude Day 6: Loving-Kindness Flow meditation, combining the week's techniques Day 7: Weekly review meditation and closure SHARE YOUR MEDITATION JOURNEY WITH YOUR FELLOW MEDITATORS Let's connect and inspire each other! Psychologist and stress expert Elissa Epel leads us in a gentle, science-backed practice to calm our nervous systems and meet uncertainty with greater ease and acceptance. We want to hear from you! Thank you for helping us make the podcast even better! How To Do This Practice: Settle in: Find a quiet, comfortable place to sit. Close your eyes or soften your gaze, and begin breathing in through your nose with long, slow exhales through pursed lips. Scan your body: Gently move your attention from the top of your head down to your toes, noticing areas of tension with a kind, curious awareness. Breathe into tension: Wherever you feel tightness, breathe into that area and soften it with each exhale, allowing your nervous system to relax just a little more. Notice uncertainty: Turn your attention to your thoughts and feelings. Ask yourself what feels uncertain right now, and name any emotions that arise without trying to change them. Ask yourself: What is on my mind right now? Am I thinking about the past, the future, or am I right here in the present?” What do I feel most uncertain about right now? What expectations might I be holding? Am I striving to control something? What feelings do I have right now? Release control: Notice where you may be holding expectations or trying to control the future, and gently practice letting go, reminding yourself that uncertainty is part of life. Rest in the present: Lean back, relax your shoulders, and focus on the safety and ease of this moment, repeating a phrase like “Things are exactly as they are right now.” Scroll down for a transcription of this episode.Today's Happiness Break Guide:ELISSA EPEL, PH.D, is a Professor and Vice Chair in the Department of Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences, at University of California, San Francisco.Learn more about Elissa Epel here: https://www.elissaepel.com/Related Happiness Break episodes:Loving Kindness Meditation: https://tinyurl.com/2kr4fjz5Embodying Resilience: https://tinyurl.com/46383mhxA Meditation for When You Feel Uneasy: https://tinyurl.com/4utrkyh5Follow us on Instagram: @ScienceOfHappinessPodWe'd love to hear about your experience with this practice! Take a few minutes to reflect on someone who inspires you, and how you can embody the values you admire in them. You can also listen to this episode in Spanish here: https://tinyurl.com/4rjmambmHow To Do This Practice: Find a quiet moment and settle your body: Sit or stand somewhere you feel safe and comfortable. Take a few slow breaths and let your body soften, releasing the noise of the day. Bring to mind someone who embodies “moral beauty”: Think of a person whose kindness, courage, humility, or integrity has genuinely inspired you. Choose one specific moment when their character moved you. Visualize an act that inspired you: Recall exactly what the person did. Picture the scene, their actions, their choices. Notice why this moment stood out as meaningful or brave or good. Notice how your body responds: As you hold this image, tune into your body: warmth, openness, tenderness, or even tears. Allow yourself to feel the emotional impact of their moral beauty. Reflect on why this matters to you: Ask yourself: What does this moment reveal about the values that matter most to me? What purpose does it awaken? What did this person teach me about how I want to live? Choose one small aligned action for today: Identify one thing you can do—big or small—that expresses the value or purpose this person embodies. Carry that intention with you into the rest of your day. In this week's Mindful Mondays, Ashley Bentley begins December with one of the most transformative practices in meditation - Loving-Kindness, or Metta - a heart-centred practice that played a pivotal role in her own healing during one of the most difficult winters of her life.In this deeply reflective episode, Ashley shares how she first encountered loving-kindness meditation during a period marked by isolation, burnout, chronic illness, and profound emotional fatigue. She explores why this ancient practice is uniquely powerful for the neurodivergent nervous system - how cultivating genuine feelings of warmth, compassion, and connection can shift us from protection into regulation, soften old emotional narratives, and create real physiological change.Listeners will learn about the heart-based science behind metta, how this practice supports emotional resilience and nervous system safety, and why it so often brings unexpected breakthroughs and healing tears. This episode also includes a short, grounding Loving-Kindness meditation, guided with trauma-sensitive care and designed to meet each listener exactly where they are.If December feels heavy, lonely, or overwhelming, this practice offers a gentle place to rest. And later this month, Ashley will revisit metta in a very special Self-Love episode—closing the year with compassion, softness, and deep inner nourishment. This is an effective life hack for improving your mood and assuaging Seasonal Affective Disorder. It also goes by the name Loving-Kindness Meditation; which I think is a really bad name. It makes it sound like a girly, wimpy thing, and it's not. It's an effective tool for managing your thoughts and emotions.Everything mentioned here

In this guided meditation with poet and teacher Henry Shukman, learn how allowing discomfort, rather than resisting it, can open the door to greater calm and self-compassion.How To Do This Practice: Find a Comfortable Position: Sit comfortably, either upright with your head balanced or reclining, and relax your jaw, shoulders, and hands. Invite Warmth and Softness into the Body: Gently bring awareness to different parts of your body—chest, belly, seat, legs, and feet. Imagine a gentle sweep of rest and quiet spreading through you, like a soft, warm wave. Notice Any Unease Without Trying to Change It: See if you can detect any subtle unease or restlessness. Instead of pushing it away, simply acknowledge it. Soften and Warm the Whole Torso: Move your awareness to the shoulders, sides, back, chest, and belly. Imagine each area softening like warm wax. Let this warmth frame your torso, surrounding even areas of tension or discomfort. Hold What You Find in Loving Awareness: Rather than trying to “fix” or remove unease, allow it to be held by your warmth and softness. Return Gently: When you feel ready, slowly bring small movements back into your body. Open your eyes and notice your surroundings, carrying a sense of warmth and acceptance with you. Loving-kindness meditation, also called metta, springs from a basic understanding of human nature: On one hand, we might truly believe that compassion makes the world better—and on the other, we might struggle to offer it to ourselves and to others for various reasons. Metta practices, like the one Dr. Emma Seppälä leads this week, offer a simple, structured way to help us gently expand our capacity to both give and receive love. As a bestselling author, Yale lecturer, and international keynote speaker, Emma Seppälä teaches executives at the Yale School of Management and is faculty director of the Yale School of Management's Women's Leadership Program. A psychologist and research scientist by training, her expertise is the science of happiness, emotional intelligence, and social connection. Her bestselling book The Happiness Track (HarperOne, 2016) has been translated into dozens of languages. Her new book is Sovereign (Hay House, 2024). Seppälä is also the Science Director of Stanford University's Center for Compassion and Altruism Research and Education. This episode of the podcast is a guided meditation-in-motion, intended as a dynamic (yet gentle) way to explore Metta or Lovingkindness Meditation. You might think of it as a complement or alternative to the traditional seated Metta Meditation practice. (The meditation itself will start at ~ 3:30 after a brief introduction.) Metta means lovingkindness, goodwill, friendliness, or benevolence. We'll be using simple Qigong-inspired movements to invoke and express kindness for ourselves and for others. Classic Metta Meditations often use the repetition of phrases like “May I (or you, or all beings) be safe, May I (you/all beings) be happy, May I (you/all beings) be healthy, May I (you/all beings) live with ease.” Our movements themselves can be done in a way that promotes the sense of safety, happiness, health, and ease, AND I will invite you to layer in the phrases along with the movements to strengthen the intention. The movements in this meditation will include a Qigong form called "Waterfall," in which we'll imagine gathering goodness, and then showering ourselves with that benevolent energy. Then, with "Pebble in the Pond," our movement will symbolize sending our Metta wishes out as ripples in the peaceful water. My goal was to describe the movements clearly enough so you could follow along with just the audio. It's definitely ok to just approximate what you imagine I'm describing - the spirit of kindness and goodwill is what we're trying to bring forward here, rather than precise, perfect movements. It's meant to be more like a guided meditation that just happens to involve moving your body. This meditation can be done either standing or seated in a chair. You can have your eyes open or close them, but if you're standing, you may find that keeping them open (with a soft gaze) helps your balance. I hope you will enjoy this moving meditation, and that it will invite a sense of kindness, embodiment, connection, and ease. ------------- For more links and resources mentioned in this episode, find the show notes at movedtomeditate.yoga/podcast. n this guided meditation, Alexander Blue Feather leads us through a loving-kindness practice inspired by the grief-woven wisdom of Francis Weller. You'll begin by grounding your body like a tree—rooted, upright, and open—before stepping into a visualization that invites you to face your own suffering with tenderness and compassion. With each breath, you'll offer gentle blessings to yourself, then to someone you love, and slowly out to the world, expanding the radius of kindness to all beings everywhere. This is a practice of remembering: that every being you encounter knows suffering, and therefore every being is worthy of compassion. Including you. May you be happy. May you be free of suffering. May you be at peace.

There are many aspects of The Path to Enlightenment that one would need to learn and practice with guidance from a Teacher, however, Loving-kindness Meditation should be among the top priorities for any Practitioner aspiring to attain Enlightenment. The goal of Loving-kindness Meditation is to eliminate anger, hatred, ill will, resentment, negative self talk, and other discontent feelings associated with the unEnlightened mind.In this Podcast, David will guide you in a Loving-kindness Meditation session and will accept questions from Students to help you develop your meditation practice and progress forward on The Path to Enlightenment.——-Daily Wisdom - Walking The Path with The BuddhaDedicated to the education of Gotama Buddha's Teachings to attain Enlightenment.https://www.BuddhaDailyWisdom.com(See our website for online learning, courses, and retreats.)Group Learning Program - LIVE Interactive Online Classes, Book, Audiobook, Videos, Podcast and Personal Guidancehttps://mailchi.mp/f958c59262eb/buddhadailywisdomThe Words of The Buddha - Pali Canon in English Study Grouphttps://mailchi.mp/6bb4fdf2b6e0/palicanonstudyprogramFREE Book - Developing a Life Practice: The Path That Leads to Enlightenmenthttps://www.buddhadailywisdom.com/freebuddhabooksFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/groups/DailyWisdom999YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@DailyWisdom999Podcast: https://creators.spotify.com/pod/profile/buddhadailywisdom/Support our efforts to share The Teachings of Gotama Buddha with you and worldwide for all people using this link.https://www.buddhadailywisdom.com/supportbuddha#buddhism #learnbuddhism #enlightenment #dhamma #dharma #buddha #meditation #meditationretreat #meditationcourse

Scroll down for a transcription of this episode.Cultivate a sense of original love — a universal connection that nurtures joy, safety, and belonging — with meditation teacher Henry Shukman. How to Do This Practice: Find a comfortable position, either seated with a balanced, unsupported spine or resting back into support. Sense the solidity of your body resting on the earth, recognizing your deep connection with it. Observe the sounds around you, the sensations in your body, and any passing thoughts. Remember that you are not separate. Your nervous system, your emotions, and even your breath are part of a vast, shared experience. You are connected not only to other humans but to all living beings. Sense the loving quality in this awareness—an unconditional, foundational love that is always present. If continuing, remain in stillness and deepen your awareness. When finished, bring small movements into your body, breathe deeply, and return to your surroundings with a sense of connection and calm.
