Welcome to the sermon podcast of Trinity Church of Portland. This week, we continued our current sermon series to carry us through Christmas: Light After Darkness: A Sermon Series on the Five Solas. In the midst of the Advent season, when traditions and cultural expectations often take center stage, Light in the Darkness invites us to return to the Gospel's true meaning through the Reformation's Five Solas: Scripture Alone, Faith Alone, Grace Alone, Christ Alone, and God's Glory Alone. These foundational truths reveal the hope, peace, and joy that Jesus—the Light of the World—brought into our darkness. Join us as we root ourselves in God's Word, celebrate the gift of grace, and remember the Savior who transforms and fuels our worship.This morning we concluded our sermon series by looking at the greatest pillar of the Five Solas—Solus Christus (Christ Alone) from 1 Timothy 2:5-6. This sermon was preached by Pastor Thomas Terry. Christ Alone is to proclaim the exclusivity of Christ which is a direct challenge to our syncretistic world. Paul makes three claims in his text that there is One God, One Mediator, and One Ransom. These three truths finds their fulfillment in Christ who alone is our mediator, and the one who paid our ransom to reconcile us back to God. This means God is with us and God is for us—in Christ Alone. Let us remember this at Christmas and always as we worship our great God and Savior. 

Protestantism is built upon "Five Solas." "Sola" is Latin for "alone," and so the battle cry of the Reformation became: Sola Scriptura ("Scripture Alone"), Sola Fide ("Faith Alone"), Sola Gratia ("Grace Alone"), Solus Christus ("Christ Alone"), Soli Deo Gloria ("Glory to God Alone"). The Reformers intended these to be a refutation of Catholicism, and Protestant apologists today think of them as Kryptonite to the Catholic Church. Resident Preacher of Restoration Community Church, Michael Thornhill, continues a series on the five solas of the Reformation. The second statement is solus Christus: Christ alone. What does it mean that we trust Jesus alone for our salvation?

This is the fifth in a series of lectures on the solas of the Reformation. I discuss the Christocentric character of Lutheran theology.

Solus Christus - Christ Alone

The Five Solas

Matthew 16:13-18, v13 “Who do people say that the Son of Man is?”... v15 “But who do you say that I am?” 16 Simon Peter replied, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” Acts 4:12, And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved. 1 Co 3:11 For no one can lay a foundation other than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ. Without Christ, we can do nothing (John 15:5) In Christ, we can do all things (Phil. 4:13). Christ the Prophet Christ is the Prophet who instructs us in the things of God so we may be healed of our blindness and ignorance. Heidelberg Catechism calls Jesus "our chief Prophet and Teacher, who has fully revealed to us the secret counsel and will of God concerning our redemption" (A. 31). 2000 BF&M, "Jesus perfectly revealed and did the will of God…” (II.B) Deuteronomy 18:15, Matt. 17:5 A Christian can only grow as we listen & heed the instructions and teachings of Jesus! Christ the Priest Christ is also Priest — our greatly needed and perfect High Priest! Heidelberg Catechism, "by the sacrifice of His body, has redeemed us, and makes continual intercession with the Father for us" (A. 31). 1689 London Baptist Confession, "because of our estrangement from God and the imperfection of our services at best, we need his priestly office to reconcile us to God and render us acceptable to him" (8.10). 2000 BF&M, "He honored the divine law by His personal obedience, and in His substitutionary death on the cross He made provision for the redemption of men from sin." (II.B.) Two conditions of Salvation 1) The first is to satisfy the justice of God through obedience to the law. 2) The second is to pay the price of our sins. We cannot accomplish either, but Christ did both perfectly. Romans 5:19, Romans 5:10 Christ the King Finally, Christ is the King, ruling over all things. He reigns over the church by the power of the Holy Spirit (Acts 2:30–33). Acts 5:31, “God exalted him at his right hand as Leader and Savior, to give repentance to Israel and forgiveness of sins.” Heidelberg Catechism, A 31) Christ is "our eternal King who governs us by His word and Spirit, and who defends and preserves us in the enjoyment of that salvation, He has purchased for us" 2000 Baptist Faith & Message (IX) "The Kingdom of God includes both His general sovereignty over the universe and His particular kingship over men who willfully acknowledge Him as King.” 2000 Baptist Faith & Message (IX) “Particularly the Kingdom is the realm of salvation into which men enter by trustful, childlike commitment to Jesus Christ.

Law or Liberty? Galatians is the first letter written by Paul Jesus + Paul asks, Is Christianity really “Solus Christus” Christ Alone? Legalism / License / Liberty  Legalism (3-4) “In the beginning, God created man in His image and humanity has been attempting to return the favor ever since." - Voltaire  Galatians 5:2 (ESV)“Look: I, Paul, say to you that if you accept circumcision, Christ will be of no advantage to you.”  License (5-6) Romans 6:15-23 (ESV) “What then? Are we to sin because we are not under law but under grace? By no means! Do you not know that if you present yourselves to anyone as obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one whom you obey, either of sin, which leads to death, or of obedience, which leads to righteousness? But thanks be to God, that you who were once slaves of sin have become obedient from the heart to the standard of teaching to which you were committed, and, having been set free from sin, have become slaves of righteousness. I am speaking in human terms, because of your natural limitations. How is it that you say, ‘You will become free'?” Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who practices sin is a slave to sin. The slave does not remain in the house forever; the son remains forever. Christ Alone.

Big Idea: You are justified in Christ alone. 1. God's promises to Abraham and his offspring predate the giving of the law. 2. God's promises to Abraham are broader than Abraham's physical offspring. 3. God's promises of blessing extends to the offspring of Abraham's faith. 4. God delivers and justifies all who believe in Jesus with faith like Abraham.

Speaker: Matthew Vandre Is Jesus enough or do we need more? Solus Christus, Christ Alone…it is a profound statement in bold opposition to a humanistic worldview, and thanks to the efforts of early reformers like Martin Luther, this idea is common amongst believers today.

In contrast to our culture of religious pluralism, Christianity holds to the exclusive claim that Salvation is found in Christ Alone. The reformers contended that the person and work of Jesus was both necessary for salvation, and sufficient for our sanctification. Sadly, we are often tempted to add to the finished work of Jesus. The truth is that Jesus + Nothing = Everything; and Jesus + anything else... ruins everything.

This year for Reformation Sunday I looked at the key beliefs of the reformation by looking at the 5 Solas of the Reformation-“Sola Scriptura” (Scripture Alone); “Sola Gratia” (Grace Alone); “Sola Fide” (Faith Alone); “Solus Christus” (Christ Alone); and “Soli Deo Gloria” (To God Alone Be Glory).
