“Gaslighting” is the psychological manipulation of individuals or groups into questioning their reality, memory, or sanity—often to maintain control. In a week of continuing mounting chaos in US politics marked by the meeting of the National Organization of Black County Officials in Birmingham, we can recognize that both colonialism and American institutions have gaslit Black communities into believing that our cultures, languages, and histories are inferior.New Ancestor Ngũgĩ wa Thiong'o's work explains how elites from would-be oppressed groups are often recruited into tempering mass liberation movements through mental colonization in language, law, politics and economics, enabling forms of structural oppression masked as deep democracy. The critique extends to today's struggles, from myths of meritocracy to distortions of Black identity and potential power in education and demography. While selective buying campaigns remain powerful in moments, the example of Alabama's A.G. Gaston underscores that building movements anchored by independent Black institutions—banks, schools, businesses—is essential for generating sustainable power. These examples also challenge strands of Black radicalism that suffer from ideological gaslighting, leading them to reject economic self-determination and political pragmatism in favor of ideological purity—undermining efforts to deliver material gains for the poor.Real liberation requires long-view strategies, rooted in cultural self-determination, global awareness, and networked community infrastructure—not just litigation or protest, but power gleaned from purposeful creation. This is an antidote to being manipulated and trying to govern by gaslight.JOIN KNARRATIVE: https://www.knarrative.com it's the only way to get into #Knubia, where these classes areheld live with a live chat.To shop Go to:TheGlobalMajorityMore from us:Knarrative Twitter: https://twitter.com/knarrative_Knarrative Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/knarrative/In Class with Carr Twitter: https://twitter.com/inclasswithcarrSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Tune in here to this Thursday's edition of Breaking With Brett Jensen! Breaking Brett Jensen kicks the show off by talking about Republican Edwin Peacock III’s surprise decision to run for Charlotte City Council at-large—and the broader political frustration sweeping through Mecklenburg County. Jensen also dives into why so many conservatives are leaving Charlotte altogether, pointing to rising crime, high taxes, and a failing school system. He breaks down the exodus to surrounding counties, such as Union, Gaston, and York, where residents are finding safer communities and better schools. Later, Jensen sits down with Edwin Peacock III to discuss his decision to run for an at-large seat on the Charlotte City Council—a position no Republican has held since 2011. Peacock, currently representing District 6, shares insights into the political challenges facing conservatives in a deeply blue city and how he plans to win over not just Republicans, but also independents and moderate Democrats. Reflecting on past victories and defeats, Peacock talks about learning from the “agony of 2011” and returning with a renewed focus on public safety, balanced governance, and pro-business policies. He stresses the importance of addressing crime before it spikes, supporting law enforcement, and attracting companies to Charlotte through practical, level-headed leadership. Gaston Shutters is a photographer and entrepreneur. Like me he's dabbled in a bunch of industries from tech to tattoos but as you'll hear, the through line is a consistent love of making and tools. Now, at his company Owl Krown, he's got the band back together and is making a host of great looking straps. Gaston was in the office the day I spoke to him so there's some coming and goings which I think add a bit of texture and we end on a lens I'd love to find a good copy of. We could have talked all day, I hope you enjoy hearing from Gaston.More about this show:A camera is just a tool but spend enough time with photographers and you'll see them go misty eyed when they talk about their first camera or a small fast prime that they had in their youth. Prime Lenses is a series of interviews with photographers talking about their photography by way of three lenses that mean a lot to them. These can be interchangeable, attached to a camera, integrated into a gadget, I'm interested in the sometimes complex relationship we have with the tools we choose, why they can mean so much and how they make us feel.

Southern Charm Reunion Part 2 Full Recap

What's up Bros? This season of Southern Charm has officially come to an end. In this episode, we get more clarity (kind of?) on JT and Venita and where things fell apart. It's still pretty confusing to be honest but nothing more confusing than Venita saying she still wants to be friends with AND DATE JT after all of that... Sally and Taylor hash things out over Gaston and their feud during the season, and its pretty clear that these two just don't vibe. Then it's time for Craig's turn in the hot seat. Andy covers it all, from the break up, to Austen, to the podcast and what's next for Craig. Austen defends his stance and Craig shows again that he isn't the best at taking criticism... despite criticizing Austen frequently. Will those two get back on track? What's next for the show? We shall see next season! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
