Welcome to the sermon podcast of Trinity Church of Portland. This week, we continued our current sermon series to carry us through Christmas: Light After Darkness: A Sermon Series on the Five Solas. In the midst of the Advent season, when traditions and cultural expectations often take center stage, Light in the Darkness invites us to return to the Gospel's true meaning through the Reformation's Five Solas: Scripture Alone, Faith Alone, Grace Alone, Christ Alone, and God's Glory Alone. These foundational truths reveal the hope, peace, and joy that Jesus—the Light of the World—brought into our darkness. Join us as we root ourselves in God's Word, celebrate the gift of grace, and remember the Savior who transforms and fuels our worship. Our sermon this morning was titled, Sola Fide (Faith Alone) from Luke 22:31-34 and was preached by Nkosana Moyo. We started with the details of the Passover the disciples had with Jesus which led to Jesus predicting his betrayal by one of them. As the disciples boast as to who was the greatest and Peter boasted that he would never turn from Jesus, Jesus deals with them gently and in love. Jesus then tells Peter that Satan has demanded to sift him like wheat. This narrative points to a misplacement of faith, in other words all the things we should not place our faith in. Peter and the disciples should be an encouragement to us as we realize that despite our weak faith at times, Jesus keeps us in our faith because of the redemption we have in Him by faith alone.
Protestantism is built upon "Five Solas." "Sola" is Latin for "alone," and so the battle cry of the Reformation became: Sola Scriptura ("Scripture Alone"), Sola Fide ("Faith Alone"), Sola Gratia ("Grace Alone"), Solus Christus ("Christ Alone"), Soli Deo Gloria ("Glory to God Alone"). The Reformers intended these to be a refutation of Catholicism, and Protestant apologists today think of them as Kryptonite to the Catholic Church. But in this conversation from a few years ago, Greg and Cory take them on one-by-one. Support this ministry so more people can consider Catholicism! Solas of the Reformation: Solus Christus (Christ Alone) - Pastor Henry Johnson
Big Idea: Faith is trust or dependence on Jesus based on the fact we take Him at His word and believe what He has said.
Pastor Chris Ansell of Restoration Community Church continues a series looking at the five solas, the primary theological statements of the Reformation. The third statement is sola fide: faith alone. What is faith? How is it the conduit to receive the grace of God? Passages: Ephesians 2:8-10; Hebrews 11:1; Romans 4:20-25; Galatians 2:16; Romans 6:1-2; Philippians 2:12-13; James 2:18, 26

What does Martin Luther, Rick Hale, and Bing Crosby have in common? Not only are all three good looking and smell nice, people pay attention to what they have to say at Christmas! With apologies to Bing, Rick borrows from the famous Latin phrases of the Reformers to frame Christmas in its purity: Sola Fide: Faith Alone; Sola Gratia: Grace Alone; Sola Scriptura: Scripture Alone, and this week: Sola Christus: Christ Alone. It seems obvious, doesn't it? Don't we sing about it? "Joy to the World the Savior reigns ..." or "O come let us adore him Christ the Lord ... " or "Cast out our sin and enter in, be born in us today ..."? French mathematician and philosopher Blaise Pascal gave us a warning: "Truth is so obscure in these times, and falsehood so established, that, unless we love the truth, we cannot know it." Listen in on this important podcast!
There is one central theme to Romans chapter 4 and it is this: Salvation comes by faith and not works. This is a timely message for today because there are millions of people practicing some form of religion or self actualization that teaches one must earn his or her way to enlightenment or heaven. Most believe if your good outweighs your bad then God smiles on you and the gates of heaven will be thrown open. Paul shatters this idea by using just two examples from the Old Testament. He eagerly probes at the roots of this issue by asking the question... What can be learned about salvation by looking at the relationship between God and Abraham? If Abraham's relationship with God was made acceptable by his good deeds then Abraham would have something to brag about. Why? Because there was a time when God asked him to do the work of sacrificing his son. This was a test of his faith and Abraham was willing to go there. You see, if God accepted us based on our good deeds then Abraham is our winner. He defeats everyone because he was willing to do the impossible. But it doesn't work that way. Well then what saved him? Paul explains by qouting from the original text: For what does the Scripture say? “Abraham believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness” (Genesis 15:3.) Paul's point is that Abraham believed God before Isaac was born and therefore he was justified by faith before he did any of his great works for which he is so famous. Paul uses King David as another example. David broke three of the Ten Commandments and according to the Old Testament sacrificial system the penalty was death. This is why David cried, "For you will not delight in sacrifice, or I would give it; you will not be pleased with a burnt offering. The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise." Psalm 51:16-17 In other words, he says there is no work he can do in order to atone for his sins. Instead, David throws himself upon the mercy of God and receives grace and forgiveness. Paul uses Israel's greatest patriarch in Abraham and Israel's greatest king in David to show there is nothing you and I can do to pay for our wrongs. Our only hope is this… But now the righteousness of God has been manifested apart from the law, although the Law and the Prophets bear witness to it—the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe. Romans 3:21 Countless millions firmly trust in some other form of religious ceremony or activity to make them right with God. What does all this mean to you and me? Take a deep breath and let it out Christian. That's a sigh of relief. Paul could not be any clearer, your eternal destiny does not depend on you working your way toward God through acts or rituals in hope that it is enough; it's about having faith in Jesus as the one who declares you justified because of his righteousness!
How do people receive the salvation that God offers? Pastor Phil explains the crucial teaching of Sola Fide: that people receive salvation in Jesus Christ through faith alone.
As we continue going through the Gospel of John, we examine the doctrine of Sola Fide (Faith Alone) through the teachings that Jesus gave in 6:22-59. Jesus explains that He is the better Moses, but their traditions blind them from understanding this basic teaching. We come to Jesus through faith alone...where is our faith?
A new MP3 sermon from Heritage OPC is now available on SermonAudio with the following details: Title: Sola Fide: Faith Alone Subtitle: The Solas of the Reformation Speaker: Ethan Bolyard Broadcaster: Heritage OPC Event: Sunday - PM Date: 11/6/2022 Bible: Hebrews 11:1-7 Length: 45 min.
On October 31, 1517, Martin Luther nailed 95 theses (or complaints against the abuses of the Church, on the door of Christ Church in Wittenburg). Out of this came the “5 Solas” declaring what it means to be a Christian. This morning we will study one of them: Sola Fide- Faith Alone. The central question Luther wrestled with is, “What must I do to be saved?” We will learn from the life of Luther, while unpacking Paul's teaching on how faith works (Romans). We will learn that we are justified before God, because of what Jesus did on the cross for you and me. Application: Gratitude and obedience is our response for what Christ has done for us on the cross.
There are 2 key bible passages that help us with this important doctrine. 1) Romans 1:16-17 2) Romans 3:28 1) What is justification? It means “to declare righteous” BF&M. Justification is God's gracious and full acquittal upon principles of His righteousness of all sinners who repent and believe in Christ. Justification brings the believer unto a relationship of peace and favor with God. (IV.B) 2) Why are we unable to justify ourselves? a. Good works can't cancel your sin, but sin will ruin your good works. b. Good works can't save you because God doesn't grade on a curve. - James 2:10 C. Good works can't save you because it will never be enough. D. Good works can't save you because you can never be sure enough. E. Good works can't save you because if they could there'd be no need for Jesus. It's either all Jesus or all you. 3) How are we justified? How, then, are we saved? If not by our own good works, how will we get to heaven? If not by our righteousness, then where will we find the righteousness we need? The word used in the Reformation by both Martin Luther and John Calvin was the application of an “alien righteousness.” The word “alien” simply means “from another place or person.” To say that we are saved by ‘alien righteousness' means that we are saved by righteousness that comes “from another place or person.” It comes not from within us as a result of our good deeds, but from outside of us entirely. Where can a guilty sinner find righteousness “from another place?” Only in Jesus. Romans 8:33-34, “Who shall bring any charge against God's elect? It is God who justifies. 34 Who is to condemn? Christ Jesus is the one who died—more than that, who was raised—who is at the right hand of God, who indeed is interceding for us” 4) Justification includes four truths Justified by God's Grace - Romans 3:24 justified by his grace as a gift Justified by Christ's Blood - Romans 5:9 we have now been justified by his blood Justified without Our Works - Romans 4:5 one who does not work but believes in him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is counted as righteousness, Justified by Faith Alone - Romans 3:28 one is justified by faith apart from works of the law.

Romans 3:21-26, “Sola Fide (Faith Alone)” – an examination of the doctrine of justification by faith alone, and a reminder of what (and why) we're protesting. Music: “Take Me Deeper” by the Ken Ferguson Band.
On what are you leaning the weight of your life? To possess saving faith means that the weight and hope of our lives has been transferred off of ourselves, and onto Jesus alone. The great Reformer Martin Luther said that this doctrine – justification by faith alone – is the article by which the Church stands or falls. To be saved by grace alone ‘through faith alone' means salvation cannot be earned or worked for; only received as a gift by shifting the weight of our lives onto the work that Jesus accomplished on the cross, for all who trust in Him.
