Welcome to the sermon podcast of Trinity Church of Portland. This week, we continued our current sermon series to carry us through Christmas: Light After Darkness: A Sermon Series on the Five Solas. In the midst of the Advent season, when traditions and cultural expectations often take center stage, Light in the Darkness invites us to return to the Gospel's true meaning through the Reformation's Five Solas: Scripture Alone, Faith Alone, Grace Alone, Christ Alone, and God's Glory Alone. These foundational truths reveal the hope, peace, and joy that Jesus—the Light of the World—brought into our darkness. Join us as we root ourselves in God's Word, celebrate the gift of grace, and remember the Savior who transforms and fuels our worship. In our sermon this morning we looked at Sola Scriptura (Scripture Alone) from Luke 24:13-53. Our sermon was titled, The Whole of Scripture Gives Us the Whole of Jesus and was preached by Andrey Gorban. In this sermon, we saw that the Bible is sufficient to give us all we need to know about God, salvation, and how we are to live. After His death, burial, and resurrection Jesus Himself proclaimed that all the Scriptures point to Him and to the salvation He earned for sinners. For 1,000 years the 39 books of the OT show forth God as actively fulfilling his promise to save his people through His Son, Jesus. This should help us to consider why Jesus came and what he has done for us by opening our eyes to see this truth and have faith in Him for the forgiveness of sins.
Protestantism is built upon "Five Solas." "Sola" is Latin for "alone," and so the battle cry of the Reformation became: Sola Scriptura ("Scripture Alone"), Sola Fide ("Faith Alone"), Sola Gratia ("Grace Alone"), Solus Christus ("Christ Alone"), Soli Deo Gloria ("Glory to God Alone"). The Reformers intended these to be a refutation of Catholicism, and Protestant apologists today think of them as Kryptonite to the Catholic Church. But in this conversation from a few years ago, Greg and Cory take them on one-by-one. Support this ministry so more people can consider Catholicism! Pastor Chris Ansell of Restoration Community Church begins a new series looking at the five solas, the primary theological statements of the Reformation. The first statement is sola scriptura: Scripture alone. What does it mean that we hold the Bible as the highest authority when it comes to knowing God and the world we live in? Passages: 2 Timothy 3:16-17; 2 Peter 1:21
This is the second lecture in a series on the five solas of the Reformation. I discuss the role and authority of Scripture and tradition.
This sermon was originally presented on May 17, 2015 Scripture Reading: 2 Timothy 3:12-17 Theologians sometimes refer to five 'solas' upon which the Christian faith rests. The wording used in the days of the Reformation is Latin and that wording is often still used today to name these great doctrines. These five doctrines are sola Scriptura (Scripture alone), solus Christus (Christ alone), sola gratia (grace alone), sola fide (faith alone), and soli Deo gloria (glory to God alone). Imagine a magnificent, ancient temple and a foundation upon which everything rests. That is sola Scriptura. Everything that we believe, obey, embrace deep in our souls is based on the foundation of sola Scriptura. Upon this foundation are three massive pillars, framing and upholding the gospel in its most basic form: sola gratia, sola fide, solus Christus - salvation is from grace alone through faith alone in Christ alone. And finally, when the foundation is in place and these three immovable, sturdy pillars are in place, then the roof and the pinnacle rest above the structure, pointing upward. That is soli Deo gloria, "for the glory of God alone." The foundation for everything we know about God and His salvation is in the Bible. Because the Bible was inspired by God (cf. 2 Tim 3:16,17; 2 Pet 1:21,22), the Bible is a unique book. It is different from every other religious book. It is the only unerring source of specific information concerning the person of God. The Bible is our ultimate authority for faith and life. The Bible, alone, is absolute truth and thus it is the final and decisive judgment on every aspect of our lives. Let us learn to say genuinely, with David, "Oh how I love your law! It is my meditation all the day" (Psa 119:97).
What does Martin Luther, Rick Hale, and Bing Crosby have in common? Not only are all three good looking and smell nice, people pay attention to what they have to say at Christmas! With apologies to Bing, Rick borrows from the famous Latin phrases of the Reformers to frame Christmas in its purity: Sola Fide: Faith Alone; Sola Gratia: Grace Alone; Sola Scriptura: Scripture Alone, and this week: Sola Christus: Christ Alone. It seems obvious, doesn't it? Don't we sing about it? "Joy to the World the Savior reigns ..." or "O come let us adore him Christ the Lord ... " or "Cast out our sin and enter in, be born in us today ..."? French mathematician and philosopher Blaise Pascal gave us a warning: "Truth is so obscure in these times, and falsehood so established, that, unless we love the truth, we cannot know it." Listen in on this important podcast!
Rev. Ed Cummings was our guest speaker this week as our new Lead Pastor, Jeff Chandler, was formally installed. This message kicks off a new series, "Bedrock Beliefs," about the five key ideas of the Reformation: Scripture Alone, Grace Alone, Faith Alone, Christ Alone and The Glory of God Alone.

Sola Scriptura - Scripture Alone
The Great Reformation brought with it ground-breaking changes to the Church, symbolized by three Latin phrases: Sola Fide (faith alone), Sola Gratia (grace alone), and Sola Scriptura (Scripture Alone). What was NOT changed, however, had negative consequences that are still being felt today. The concept is "the Priesthood of the Believer" - which should have done away with an elite sacerdotal corps and returning ministry to every member of the church. But for many reasons (not good), that didn't happen. Today, much of the church is unscripturally hamstrung by the belief that "professional clergy" must do all the ministry - or at least all the "important" ministry. In this brand new series, Rick is trying to destroy that myth. Listen to this really important podcast - and then take up YOUR duty as God's Minister!
Reformation is taking hold on continental Europe, espousing doctrines in direct opposition to the Roman Catholic church. Rome must respond, and does so starting with the Council of Trent. In addition, we will learn about another large figure in the early Protestant Reformation, John Calvin.--When you hear the work 'council' you think of a meeting, but this 'meeting' extended almost 20 years through the reign of three popes. The four main decisions or decrees that the council produced were- --1. A rejection of Sola Scriptura -Scripture Alone is the Authority- and a re-affirmation of the authority of Papal decree and tradition as equal with scripture- --2. A rejection of Sola Fide -Justification by Faith Alone- and a reiteration that justification is a progressive process that requires works- --3. An establishment of Transubstantiation -real physical transformation of the bread and wine during communion into the body of blood of Christ- as church doctrine.--4. Ecclesiastical reforms in the clergy.

What are the Solas in Christianity? Why are they important? What is Sola Scriptura, and why is it so important for me to understand this as a believer? In this episode, we will uncover what the Solas are and why Sola Scriptura, as the first Sola, is so important.
On today's program I provide an audio recording of a recent article I wrote in defense of Sola Scriptura. I have several friends and family who are either Roman Catholic or Eastern Orthodox, so many of our discussions tend to revolve around the authority of Scripture. In the article, I first present a case for Sola Scriptura. Then I offer a few criticisms, specifically focused on the Roman Catholic perspective. Finally, I end with several key questions and answers. As always, if you have any civic/government related questions, feel free to email me at thegbgpodcast@gmail.com, and I will be happy to address them on the program. Thank you and God bless! If you haven't listened to our episode on Scripture Alone from last season, you might want to listen before you get into this week's episode. Here is a direct link: https://anchor.fm/theologyontap/episodes/Theology-On-Tap--Episode-1-03-Sola-Scriptura-Scripture-Alone-elfsct/a-a3km05l What is the Bible? Actually not a single book, but a library of 66 books In short, it is God's revelation about Himself to His people for His people. It is History It is Inspired- or breathed out - by God 2 Timothy 3:16 All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the people of God may be complete, equipped for every good work. It doesn't just contain the inspired Word of God, It is the Word of God It is Inerrant- It doesn't contain errors. It is Living and Active- Not simply ink on a page or pixels on a screen Genesis 2:7 then the Lord God formed the man of dust from the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living creature. Ezekiel 37:9 Prophesy to the breath; prophesy, son of man, and say to the breath, Thus says the Lord God: Come from the four winds, O breath, and breathe on these slain, that they may live.” So I prophesied as he commanded me, and the breath came into them, and they lived and stood on their feet, an exceedingly great army. It is Performative- It has the power to do things. Psalm 29: The voice of the Lord is powerful; the voice of the Lord is majestic. 5 The voice of the Lord breaks the cedars; the Lord breaks in pieces the cedars of Lebanon… The voice of the Lord strikes with flashes of lightning. 8 The voice of the Lord shakes the desert; the Lord shakes the Desert of Kadesh. 9 The voice of the Lord twists the oaks and strips the forests bare. Big Ideas1. Prayer is vitally important for the life of the Church.Jesus was crucified and then rose on the third day just as he promised. He commissioned his Church to bear witness to the world regarding the Gospel. Then he ascended back to heaven. The disciples had personally witnessed all of this. What is the next thing we find them doing? Praying! Prayer was something they had learned to devote themselves to. As the story of Acts unfolds, we will see how prayer is vitally important for the life of the Church.2. The Scriptures were the final authority in the early Church. (Sola Scriptura)Judas had betrayed Jesus and ended up taking his own life. This left a void among the disciples that needed to be filled. How did the early Church find their way through this challenge? They looked to the Scriptures for wisdom and instruction and submitted themselves to what the Scriptures taught. Remember that at this point, there was no New Testament. The early Church had only the Old Testament Scriptures. They did not act as if the events of Jesus' life had somehow made the Old Testament outdated or irrelevant. Rather, they sought out God's wisdom from the Old Testament and submitted themselves to it. The whole counsel of God must always have the final and ultimate say in the life of the Church. This is Sola Scriptura (Scripture Alone). Study Questions1. How do you think you would feel if you personally witnessed the resurrected Jesus ascending back to heaven?2. We read in Acts 1:14 that the early Church was unified in their devotion to prayer. Why do you think this was the case? What is currently keeping you from being devoted to prayer?3. How do you tend to think about the Old Testament? Is it outdated? Irrelevant? Confusing? Impractical? What can we learn from the example of the early Church in regards to how we approach the Old Testament?
In this episode the Theology on Tap crew discusses scripture and how it is the only rule and norm of our faith as followers of Jesus, so pour yourself a cold beer, warm cup of milk, hot tea or a bottle of water and enjoy this conversation. Salvation is gifted to people by God's grace alone. Through faith alone, in Christ alone. And this truth is revealed to us in Scripture alone. the ultimate source of Truth about salvation. What do we mean by “Scripture”? The 66 books of the Bible (27 NT 39 OT) 2 Timothy 3:16 All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the people of God may be complete, equipped for every good work. Alone: For better or for worse: This truth is only found in the Bible, Scripture Alone in the sense that other sources of reliable ideas are informed BY the scriptures, not the other way around. "Unless I am convinced by Scripture and plain reason - I do not accept the authority of the popes and councils, for they have contradicted each other - my conscience is captive to the Word of God. I cannot and I will not recant anything for to go against conscience is neither right nor safe. God help me. Amen." -Martin Luther What is Truth? "Righteousness and justice are the foundation of Your throne; mercy and truth go before Your face. Blessed are the people who know the joyful sound! They walk, O Lord, in the light of Your countenance." Psalm 89 Reason is helpful! Matthew 5:29 If your right eye causes you to sin, tear it out and throw it away. For it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body be thrown into hell. Does all that this discussion of Scripture alone mean that, as Christians, we should ignore authority figures in the church? Are we anarchists? Did the reformers pass along a rebellious legacy? Do we have to throw all traditions out the window, never establishing any new ones? Does it mean that we tell our non-believing friends to ignore all their experiences, especially the "spiritual" ones? And the really big one... Does it mean that Christians can't - or don't - believe in science? --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/theologyontap/message
