Episode Description:On today's very special episode, we're bringing back one of our favourite guests from season one - educational specialist Paloma Forde to talk about the invisible gift workshops they've been launching to schools. In the episode, Andrew and Paloma explain in more detail what the workshops are, Andrew opens up about his ultimate goal for them in the future, and Paloma reveals the shocking statistic that shows the mental health crisis young people face today. Top Quotes:“My goal with these workshops is that someone, ten years from now, sits on a couch and talks about the workshop they did in school - called the invisible gift - and how it changed their life.” - Andrew Kitley“We want to get to the stage with these workshops that parents are no longer like ‘oh no - my child got diagnosed with dyslexia'. We want them to be able to see neurodiversity as an invisible gift. We want them to say, when their child gets diagnosed, ‘okay, my child has dyslexia. What do I need to do now?” - Paloma FordeAbout the host:The Invisible Gift is hosted by entrepreneur and dyslexic, Andrew Kitley. With twenty years experience, Andrew Kitley has worked his way up the metaphorical and literal ladder to become Managing Director of Kitall: an engineering firm.Under Andrew's guidance, Kitall is now one of the most sought after names to complete complex engineering projects in the UK. In each episode of The Invisible Gift, Andrew seeks the advice and inspiration of a fellow trailblazer who has defied the odds to achieve the extraordinary - turning the challenge of dyslexia into a gift.About the guest:Paloma Forde is a teaching specialist and founder of the award winning business Screening4Dyslexia. Paloma has worked for over twenty years in teaching. She initially specialised in autism but became aware of the lack of research and understanding in dyslexia, and began researching the topic herself. Paloma has since developed teaching strategies that are designed to aid dyslexic children in their learning and education.Paloma now advocates for the early screening and intervention of children with dyslexia, arguing children must be given the tools to adapt and thrive with dyslexia. In 2017, Paloma founded Screening4Dyslexia: A business dedicated to providing affordable and accurate testing for younger children. In 2017, her work was recognised nationally by The Sunday Business newspaper - Winning the ‘Small Business Award', presented by Theo Paphitis.Resources:https://www.kitall.co.uk/https://screening4dyslexia.com/https://www.onefineplay.com/http://theinvisiblegift.com/

In this short episode, Brock and Jeremy discuss the murder of George Floyd and some of the questions raised by how companies are responding. Though we're not always the best at articulating it, this is a topic we're looking to continue to discuss on Millennial Exec. We can't focus on career development, hiring practices, and diversity in our companies until Black lives matter in every community and every company in our country. Our podcast is dedicated to learning from each other across our generation. We know the time is now to listen, learn, and take action to make change happen. We recommend Episode 3 with Kristen Messerli, the Founder of Cultural Outreach, where we discuss both her personal experience but also the goal of Cultural Outreach to support diversity and inclusion in the financial services and real estate industries. We could have done a better job explaining how and why this is such an important issue, but the good news is that we'll have plenty of time in the future to explore this. Today's episode is just step 1 in recognizing our privilege and making the commitment continue to address racial inequity and systemic inequality in business, tech, and career opportunities. We must do better. We want to do better. We will take time to read, research, and listen, specifically to our future guests who will provide their experience firsthand.Links and recommendations:8 Can't Wait: Specific policies every police department can adopt today to save livesJeremy's post on his response to the murder of George Floyd."Corporate America has failed Black America," Sunday Business, The New York Times, June 6, 2020. In this episode, Niki, Natalia, and Neil discuss the new reality show Making It, the 2008 financial collapse ten years later, and the death of Walter Mischel, the social psychologist who created the “marshmallow test.” Support Past Present on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/pastpresentpodcast Here are some links and references mentioned during this week’s show:  Making It, a crafting competition show hosted by Amy Poehler and Nick Offerman, is widely considered a welcome break from the cutthroat culture of reality television and of politics. Natalia recommended this American Conservative article on the limits of television crafting. Ten years after the economic crash of 2008, its effects are still felt. Natalia cited M.H. Miller’s New York Times essay, “I Came of Age During the 2008 Financial Crisis. I’m Still Angry About It”. Neil recommended the New York Times’ entire Sunday Business section’s retrospective on this topic. Social psychologist Walter Mischel, best known for orchestrating the “marshmallow test” that famously connected children’s ability to delay gratification with their long-term prospects for success, has died. Natalia referred to Oscar Lewis’ 1961 book, Children of Sanchez: Autobiography of a Mexican Family.    In our regular closing feature, What’s Making History: Natalia discussed Stanford University’s decision to remove the name of Junipero Serra from a major building and street. Neil reflected on Sigal Samuel’s Atlantic article, “The Sex-Abuse Scandal is Growing Faster Than the Church Can Contain It.” Niki shared Nadra Nittle’s Vox article, “Students Are Waging War On Sexist and Racist Dress Codes – And They’re Winning.”

Janet Kelly and Nancy McKeon met while working for The Washington Post. Janet was a “no-nonsense” staff writer sharing her views on style and fashion, while Nancy was Editor of the Food, Real Estate, Travel, and Sunday Business sections. (But not all at once.) After leaving The Post, Janet recognized that media outlets and websites were catering to millenials. And the 40+ audience, a growing demographic with significant buying power, was being ignored. Janet decided to make a difference by creating and delivering stories with points of view for a more mature audience. Janet recruited Nancy, they brought other media-savvy women on-board, and MyLittleBird.com was born! In our discussion, they share what it's like to run your own business vs. working for a corporation, how they are growing the website, and why this venture is so energizing. We also chat about some of their favorite stories - how to find jeans that fit, the dog park and dog culture, and managing anxiety attacks. Listen to our conversation to hear Nancy and Janet discuss: Janet and Nancy's backgrounds in print and online media and how their paths intersected to create a new online venture Why they created "a grown-up girl's guide to D.C. living" How to stay energized as your career progresses Why it pays to be strategic in business and in your personal life Adapting and using your skills for new ventures The importance of "getting out!" Constantly expanding your knowledge to remain in the game Quotes from Nancy and Janet: "We try to mix the valuable and the humorous to create a package that's inviting for us to write about and that's inviting for our readers to read about." - Nancy "As Nancy always says, 'Look we've been doing this for so long, why shouldn't we keep doing it? Because it's what we know how to do and we have gathered all this experience, so let's keep doing it. Let's keep going.'" - Janet "When opportunity knocks, or when the occasion arises, you figure out how to make it work for you." - Janet http://MyLittleBird.com Contact Lisa: Lisa@EverBetterU.com
