Two weeks ago, the centre held in Europe after a Super Sunday of elections in Romania, Portugal and Poland. And that was in part because of Poland where the centrist Warsaw Mayor Rafal Trzaskowski narrowly beat the nationalist Karol Nawrocki in the first round of the Presidential elections. That is no longer the case. In last Sunday's run-off, Trzaskowski failed to materialize a victory and lost against Nawrocki, the candidate backed by the right-wing Law and Justice Party. Today's guests attribute Trzaskowski's failure to the fact that Prime Minister Tusk hasn't been able to pass the significant reforms he promised before being elected almost two years ago. Even though the main reason why he hasn't been able to do so is because of President Duda from the Law and Justice Party. And yet, Poles elected a President that is only going to make Tusk's life even harder if not impossible. To discuss the fallout from the Polish elections, host Catarina Vila Nova sits down with Leszek Konrad Jażdżewski, Editor-in-Chief of Liberté! and 2022 European Young Leader (EYL40), and Michał Olszewski, former deputy mayor of Warsaw who served under Rafal Trzaskowski for six years and 2015-2016 European Young Leader (EYL40) who currently serves as Board Member of PGNiG TERMIKA, Poland's leading natural gas company. After a Super Sunday in Europe, Policy Voices brings you three guests. The three consequential elections took place in Romania, Portugal and Poland and history kept repeating itself. The centre holds far from an absolute majority, the far-right continues its speedy ascent to power and the left gets handed an embarrassing defeat. In Romania, Nicusor Dan managed to turn around the results from the first round and beat the far-right candidate George Simion in the presidential elections. To bring you up to speed, host Catarina Vila Nova speaks with Dacian Ciolos, former prime minister of Romania and European commissioner who currently serves as special advisor to Romania's interim President, and Andrei Popoviciu, a Romanian journalist who's been covering the elections for Politico and The Guardian. In Portugal, the Democratic Alliance (who sits with the EPP in the European Parliament), repeated last year's feat of winning again the general elections albeit far from an absolute majority. Of note is the fact that the far-right Chega came neck and neck with the Socialists who are now tied in second place. To understand the Portuguese results, Catarina speaks with the Portuguese political analyst Maria Luisa Moreira. Papers publish leaked map showing Israel's proposal to divide Gaza Strip

In the press

PRESS REVIEW – Monday, May 19: The Sunday Times shows a map leaked by diplomats proposing to divide the Gaza Strip into military zones. Also, papers react to pro-European candidate's win in Romanian elections. Next, the "eternal second" French Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau is the new head of the French conservatives. And finally, the polarising love of the Brits: from hating seagulls to spoiling their dogs.  The British daily The Independent reported that Israel has started a “major new Gaza ground offensive. The paper says that the ground operation was announced after indirect talks with Hamas in Qatar didn't show much progress. Over the weekend, the Sunday Times reported that the Gaza Strip could be divided into military zones. It based its reporting on maps leaked by diplomats that showed three civilian zones divided by military areas. “Civilians would be forbidden to travel between the sections without permission,” writes the paper, adding that the proposal would prevent Palestinians from moving freely throughout the enclave. That means that Palestinians would be separated from their land and families. Next, moving on to Super Sunday – elections this weekend were held in Poland, Portugal and Romania. The pro-European mayor of Bucharest, Nicusor Dan, defeated far-right candidate George Simion. Simion is a “nationalist aligned with President Trump, who had been seen as the front-runner,” writes the New York Times. The article calls the win a “setback for Europe's surging nationalist forces” that will likely “calm fears in Europe”. Politico focuses on the different reactions after the election: "Tate bro tears and EU delight", the headline reads. Andrew and Tristan Tate are popular misogynist influencers who were implicated in a vast investigation into human trafficking and rape in Romania. After Dan's win, Tristan tweeted “Romania we had a good run”. But for the European Union, Dan's win is a “huge relief”, writes Politico. In an editorial, Romanian newspaper Bursa writes that “Romania avoided regime change but not systemic crisis”. The country is now entering “a period of fragile transition”.There has also been Romanian flag controversy on social media. The right-wing candidate, George Simion, seems to have mixed up his own national flag. During the exit polls, he wanted to tweet “I am the new president of Romania” using the flag emoji, but he put the one of Chad instead. The flags are fairly similar, the difference is in the colour shades. That didn't stop many social media users from making fun of him online. One tweet says, “Chad elects Simion as president – Romania breathes a sigh of relief.” In France, Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau was chosen to lead the French conservative party with more than 70 percent of the vote. Les Républicains is also the party of former Presidents Nicolas Sarkozy and Jacques Chirac when it was known as UMP. French right-wing paper Le Figaro writes that he is the “new hope of the right” and that his victory will help reinforce his reputation “two years away from the presidential election”. The French daily Le Parisien calls the interior minister “the eternal second” saying that up until now, Retailleau has always played a supporting role but now he will be on the front line. And in the United Kingdom, seagull attacks have risen. The Daily Star reports that "raging gulls" have assaulted half of the British population, or some 35 million "victims" per year. The Brits seem to hate seagulls, but that's not at all the case when it comes to dogs. The Sunday Times writes about Goodwoof – a festival like Glastonbury but for pampered dogs. It's a two-day event in West Sussex that proposes dog yoga, blow-dries and even tarot card readings that attracted more than 12,000 dogs this year.  You can catch our press review every morning on France 24 at 7:20am and 9:20am (Paris time), from Monday to Friday.

Kelly Cates presents Super Sunday from the Emirates and is joined by Jamie Redknapp, Les Ferdinand, and Paul Merson, who analyse Arsenal's 1-0 win against Newcastle, which sees them secure Champions League football for next season after a stunning second-half strike from Declan Rice. The win also means the Gunners are likely to finish runners-up again in the Premier League, and Merse says Arsenal must be serious contenders for the title by Christmas, otherwise he thinks the club will replace Mikel Arteta. The trio also discuss the earlier game on Super Sunday, which saw Nottingham Forest keep their hopes of playing Champions League football next campaign after their 2-1 win at West Ham. They then give their views on who they believe will finish in the top five, with Merse saying that he is worried about Manchester City's chances of making the cut. The Europa League final on Wednesday will see either Manchester United or Tottenham Hotspur also qualify for Europe's prestige club competition, and they give their predictions on who will be victorious in Bilbao.

May 19th is Europe's Super Sunday with three elections: Romania, Poland and Portugal, that could reshape each country's national trajectory and reverberate across the continent. Romania's presidential runoff has exposed deep political divides, with nationalist candidate George Simion facing centrist Nicușor Dan. In Poland, the first round of the presidential race is testing the balance of power between the pro-European government and a conservative opposition, amid growing far-right influence. Meanwhile in Portugal, voters returned to the polls for the third time in three years, with the centre-right seeking to maintain power while resisting pressure from the surging far-right Chega party. The McLaren and Aston Martin Formula 1 teams are preparing for a “Super Sunday” in Brazil. For just the sixth time in the sport's history, both qualifying and the race are taking place on the same day. Stormy weather is testing the teams' resources and resolve at the Interlagos Circuit, home to the Sao Paulo Grand Prix. The teams and drivers arrive at the track at the crack of dawn, ready to think on their feet in a marathon day ahead. After a well-orchestrated performance in Saturday's Sprint Race, Championship contenders McLaren are looking to seize advantage on Sunday. Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri know they must work together to claim maximum points for the team. At Aston Martin, Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll sense an opportunity in the wet. All the drivers know that rain can level the playing field at any grand prix, and this weekend is no different. It's the Monday after the race before. Brazil's historic Interlagos circuit staged another epic grand prix, and one which may prove pivotal in McLaren's hunt for both World titles. Now, it's time for the Aston Martin and McLaren teams to return to their factories. Back at base, they can analyse their performance with the bulk of the team who don't travel to the races. Aston Martin race engineers Chris Cronin and Andrew Vizard explain how vital the factory debriefs are to understanding what went right - or wrong - after every race, and how to take the learnings into the next event. Drivers Stroll and Alonso may be taking time to recuperate after an epic race weekend but they stay in touch with their engineers and work going on back at base.At McLaren, team boss Andrea Stella is making it his mission to create a winning culture at the factory, as well as at the track. The Italian is only in his second season as team principal but has driven the team into title contention. Back at base, he shares some of the secrets to his success so far.Aston Martin are also plotting a renaissance under new Group CEO Andy Cowell. Our guides Sarah Holt and Holly Samos are given a VIP pass to join the workforce assembled at the heart of the factory as Cowell makes his first address to the team. While Aston Martin are looking to the future, McLaren must focus on the present. This is a team who has won multiple World titles. Now the factory is fixed on ending the 26-year wait for the next Constructors' crown and they are determined to protect their lead over rivals Ferrari and Red Bull. British star Lando Norris hasn't given up his hopes of reeling in reigning champion Max Verstappen in the drivers' standings. With three races left to go in the 2024 season, there is still all to play for. F1:Back at Base is narrated by Josh Hartnett. It is created and produced by Sarah Holt and Holly Samos and is an IMG Production for the BBC.
