Christine Malec has lived in Toronto as long as she's been alive, and one might think living in a big city has tempered her to the dangers of expanding her outlook, but that has not happened. Victor first acquainted himself with Christine through some work she'd done for the Canadian National Institute for the Blind, and throughout the years, they've managed to keep in touch through various e-mail lists, but Victor has never really sat down and had a heart to heart chat with Christine. He is so glad he did… Listeners may have heard of Christine through her work on the Talk Description to Me podcast, as a co-host of the show, and now she's branched out into a form of the spoken word art of story telling, a skill not easily accomplished, but listening to her voice leaves no doubt in Victor's mind that her voice and talents will lead her in all sort of directions, should she so choose. Christmas is a wonderful time to get in touch with old friends, to catch up over a warm mug of hot chocolate, to say "How have you been? I've really missed you!" Well, we've really missed you! This year, to celebrate the season, we'd like to make this small Christmas offering: a reading of How The Grinch Stole Christmas by the one-and-only Dr. Seuss. But Christine is Christine, JJ is JJ, and this is Talk Description to Me, so in our reading of the classic Christmas tale, a few descriptions of the picture book illustrations have been woven into the text in playful Seussian rhyme! Now let's pour that hot chocolate and catch up, shall we?!Support the show

Fuelled once again by Christine's insatiable curiosity, today Talk Description to Me explores the visuals of river systems. How do rivers form? Are the headwaters obvious? Are stream networks visible in satellite images? Does a river in the Amazon look the same as a river in Egypt? With the help of diagrams, descriptions of maps, and tactile primers on continental geography, JJ and Christine dive headfirst into the cool, rushing waters of the world's great rivers.Support the show

From January and Braille Literacy Month to February, the first full week in February, and White Cane Week (WCW) here in Canada - we on Outlook are back, live in studio after January and Omicron. This week we're talking about white canes, the shame and embarrassment and also the freedom and safety they provide those of us who use them. We review the guests we've had on Outlook already this year, including the author of a memoir called Love is Blind. We briefly discuss our feelings on common expressions like that. Also this week, we want to highlight two of the most recent episodes of another podcast we listen to and greatly respect. Talk Description to Me is a podcast created by two friends in Toronto, one sighted and one blind, who discuss the visual world and our world's current events, focusing on image description for blind people's benefit. JJ and Christine make a great pair on air and lately they spoke about fire and about the trucker convoy. So we discuss how we think of fire, from the warmth and romance of candles and fires in fireplaces or outdoors, all the way up to massive and destructive forest fires. One of us has had enough sight, in the past, to see what a candle flame or a camp fire look like, while the other sees light and has only ever seen light and dark. Being that February is Black History Month, Kerry has a story of a man from history she discovered while doing research for a piece of writing she is doing, a man named George (Washington) Jones, aka George Gravy who came to Canada and eventually made his way to the town of Woodstock in Southwestern Ontario in the 20s and would become our unofficial town crier. So check us and the show out this week, for more on why this relates to Outlook On Radio Western and what we do here. Not to mention, while we do end this week's episode on a tough note, with the most recent episode of Talk Description on the upheaval right now in Canadian society, and our thoughts on what it means when the media uses such hyperbolic headlines as “Dancing On the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Ottawa.” How when some blind hear that, they may not realize often it's an expression, a metaphorical action rather than a literal act. Blind people hear the horns of the truckers on the news, but don't get to see the signs being carried and posted, for example, leaving us out on some of what others are getting. Yet even what one person sees on a story in the media is never exactly the same as the next person. Yes, here on Outlook we talk about the hard things, as well as chocolate. (Hint to an upcoming episode later this month featuring Purdys Chocolatier, their new braille box, a perfect gift with Valentine's Day coming up.) From a recent binaural carwash adventure on their own podcast. To adventures talking space with us and Christine Malec's dream of one day meeting astronaut Chris Hadfield, from one Chris to the other. You heard it here first, on the latest episode of Outlook. The two hosts of Talk Description to Me, Christine Malec and JJ Hunt, who we spoke to about their podcast on ours last winter, are involved in a cool new project that we wanted to highlight. For months, Malec and Hunt have been working with Kim Arcand from the Chandra X-Ray observatory (who has been doing this sort of visual scientific translating since 98), and now these three are creating written descriptions of the data visualizations that are generated from Chandra research into astronomy from deep space. Malec reached out to us, last spring on Outlook about all of this, wondering whether we'd be interested in interviewing the three of them about the work, including some of the descriptions they've generated, and/or a sonification or two. It's a type of translation, from data, translated to 3D printed models, into audio sonifications. From exploding stars to colliding galaxies and galaxy clusters. As a visualization scientist, Arcand is letting NASA know that though blind people may have felt intimidated by the stem fields for much too long now, it's a new world of expanded forms of audio and image description. It's time to expand the infinite number of possibilities for making astronomy and all sciences more accessible and inclusive. All of this work is making astronomy more accessible to people who are blind and low vision. Kim, JJ and Christine are eager to spread the word about these projects, as Christine says, “Mostly cause they're cool, but partly to show NASA that accessibility work is valued by our community.” And all the laughs and science puns, like the cherry on top of what's already a pretty special Outlook episode to begin with. For more information on this accessible astronomy work from Christine, JJ, and Kim, visit Chandra's website. Check out Kim Arcand's own site and be sure to check out her TED Talk too. What's a fire tornado? How do the northern lights appear in the night sky? What does Joe Biden's wearing of aviator sunglasses represent culturally? Who is The Falling Man? What exactly is a meme anyway? And what do Mike Pence and Grandpa Simpson have to do with one another? To our blind listeners, for answers to these questions and more, check out Outlook this week where we speak with Christine Malec and JJ Hunt, a blind/sighted team, out of Toronto, who are behind Talk Description to Me, where: “the visuals of cultural events and the world around us get hashed out in description rich conversations”. From one podcast team to another, this episode contains silly moments like our thoughts on how fun goalball actually is to discussion on moving images such as the 9/11 Memorial. JJ has a background in theatre and draws on that in his work describing images and the sighted world that we, as blind people, can often miss. Christine is a musician and audio description consultant and together these two are making quite a splash in the ever expanding world of audio description. And for our sighted listeners, could you describe, in detail, the horror and the heroic actions on a day like 9/11 to someone who was unable to see it with their own eyes? Audio description is an art form and a necessary one, like all art is, but it matters to many of us who want to feel included and to have access to what is seen in popular culture and in news and current events around the world. Some blind people have something of a visual memory and others have never seen, but inclusion is thankfully becoming an universal standard.
