The 1-sentence job description for every Christian is to make disciples. The 1-sentence job description for pastors it to equip Christians to make disciples. We are called to go from DOERS of the ministry to EQUIPPER of others for the ministry. The problem is that pastors are often in the wrong lane, and they do not have a good sense of how God has specifically designed them to be equippers. Because of this, we are often busy in the wrong lane and busy with the wrong things.
After spending 4-weeks discussing why many pastors are unhealthy, we look at the actual job description of the pastor from Ephesians 4:11-12. The job description of the pastor is to equip the saints for the work of ministry, but the Bible never tells us how to actually do that. In this episode, we encourage pastors to begin the journey of self-awareness to be able to lead in the right lane.

Description Part 3 of "Core Concepts" What does it mean to be part of an "us"? Listen in as we get into part 3 of core concepts.
What does it mean to be a servant and a witness? That's the job description Paul was given by Jesus. And that's our job description, too. Paul did his work differently than we do, but in the end it boils down to being a servant and a witness. You can be a servant and a witness at work today, too. But before you volunteer, check out the meaning of the original Greek word translated witness. It may surprise you!
Title: The World We All Want By: Andy Worthington Bible Reading: Book of Acts (Chapter 4, verse 42-47) Recorded: Sunday 08/03/2020 at our Moseley Kings Heath Gathering. Description: Part of our teaching series called '#AGAIN' looking at the early chapters in the book of Acts in the Bible. Our hope and prayer as we explore these studies together is that God would begin to awaken us to what he is doing and will do again. Maybe, just maybe, we might dare to see extraordinary things happen among us! The World We All Want: Video - https://vimeo.com/384231047/7b2746b4b3 Everywhere we look, people want to change the world. From climate change to poverty, from political reform to issues of security, everyone wants a better world. What about you? What kind of world do you long for? When you dream about the kind of world that could be, what is it like? How do people relate? What happens? What doesn’t happen? In the ancient world, life was very hard. With no welfare state or NHS it was up to you, and those around you, to survive and get by. We can easily forget just how precarious life was. One bad illness or poor harvest was not just inconvenient, it could mean total disaster. And so, when this strange group of people started living in a radically different way – sharing their possessions, caring for outcasts, healing the sick - people began to really take notice. It was almost as if they were creating a different world. Maybe, just maybe, we might dare to see extraordinary things happen among us! Here's To The Crazy Ones: Video - https://vimeo.com/394947044 In every generation, there are one or two people who change the rules. They are game-changers, with such vision, that everything that comes after them is completely different. William Wilberforce, Emmeline Pankhurst, Martin Luther King. It’s easy to see how important these people are. But, what we so easily forget is the pain and opposition that they had to endure as they went about changing the world. And that’s the thing with challenging and changing the status quo. People don’t like it. Lots of people don’t like it! And the same is true for followers of Jesus. It always has been, and always will be. Jesus so changed the world and its norms and patterns, that ever since followers of Christ have been called to challenge the status quo. And that often means painful opposition. Maybe we need to get comfortable with being uncomfortable. Our hope and prayer as we explore these studies together is that God would begin to awaken us to what he is doing and will do again. Maybe, just maybe, we might dare to see extraordinary things happen among us! The Masks We Can All Take Off Video - https://vimeo.com/392963977 Bible Reading - Book of Acts (Chapter 5, verses 1-11). There’s no doubt that we live in an age of the individual. An era when everyone is valued and empowered to dream big dreams and achieve big things. At least that’s what we want to believe is true! When you look at the evidence, though, our age of greater independence and apparent empowerment has actually led to greater and greater emotional and relational strain. It’s almost as if the more pressure we put on ourselves to be somebody, the greater the burden becomes. And so we wear masks - in real life and on social media - pretending to be something we are not. The same was true for the first followers of Jesus. This story shows two people who pretended to be something they were not. And the effects of this pretence was dramatic! Perhaps it’s a necessary reminder to be the kind of community where we all have the freedom to take our masks off, and discover the joy of not needing to pretend any more. Title: How Much Is Too Much? By: Sarah Auger Bible Reading: Acts Chapter 4, verses 32-37 Recorded: Sunday 16/02/2020 at our Bournville Gathering. Our hope and prayer as we explore these studies together is that God would begin to awaken us to what he is doing and will do again. Maybe, just maybe, we might dare to see extraordinary things happen among us! How Much Is Too Much? Video - https://vimeo.com/391244485 Imagine that one day you receive a large inheritance from a long-lost uncle. What would you do with it? Your immediate answer can be quite telling! Yes, sure, we know we’re supposed to want to give it away...but so often we immediately think of things we would buy. It’s almost as if money and possessions have a greater hold on us than we dare to admit. In the 16th Century, the German priest Martin Luther described how people go through 3 different conversion experiences in their journey of faith in Jesus - their heads, their hearts...and their wallets! What he meant was that, so often, the way we use our money can be the most challenging aspect of our lives (and not just because we wish we had more of it!). For the first followers of Jesus, they had experienced such radical generosity from God that it totally changed how generous they were with each other. So much so, that there was ‘no needy person among them’. Now, that is radical generosity! To find out more about Riverside Church please visit: https://riverside-church.org.uk/

Title: Does Prayer Make Any Difference? By: Harry Hewitt Bible Reading: Acts Chapter 4, verses 23-31 Recorded: Sunday 09/02/2020 at our Bournville Gathering. Maybe, just maybe, we might dare to see extraordinary things happen among us! Does Prayer Make Any Difference? Video - https://vimeo.com/388228991/2d964a852c In survey after survey, most people admit to praying at some point in their lives. Whether or not people do it as some sort of superstition, or genuinely believe that prayer works, most of us pray. Why? Perhaps it is because we all need hope beyond ourselves. As a society, we want to believe we are in control of our destiny. But at some point we all realise that we aren’t. Things happen, life doesn’t work out how we planned. And it is then that we realise we need help and hope. For the earliest Christians, prayer was as natural as breathing. God was doing something undeniable among them - the world had changed – and prayer was the only appropriate response when they needed hope, help and direction. And perhaps as they prayed, it helped them remember that God really was in control too. Maybe the same is true for us? A situation when circumstances are completely out of your control, and you just have to hope that something, anything, happens to change those things and you can’t do anything about it. When we look at the ancient world, we easily forget that they lived lives that were largely out of their control. When illness came, or difficult times, there was often nothing they could do about it. They knew both what hope looked like, and what false hope felt like. They were desperate for rescue, and when con-artists offered healing (as they regularly did) they were hopeful, but sceptical. And so, when the early Christians started seeing genuine healing happen, everyone took notice. Questions were asked, and the evidence was undeniable. People began to see that there really was genuine hope, and that God really was at work. To find out more about Riverside Church please visit: https://riverside-church.org.uk/

Title: Whats Your Story? By: Nathanael Ballew Bible Reading: Acts Chapter 3: verse 11 & Chapter 4: verse 12 Recorded: Sunday 26/01/2020 at our Bournville Gathering. What's Your Story? Video - https://vimeo.com/386514421/ee8114f027 In a recent interview, a Silicon Valley executive confessed that "I don’t want the world to be fixed, if I’m not the one fixing it". It was an honest admission that many of us can identify with. We want to be in on the action, playing our part in history. We want our lives to really count. We want the story of our lives to be one that is worth telling! But what if the story of our lives is actually not about us at all? What if we are really part of a much, much bigger story? As we read about the earliest followers of Jesus in the book of Acts, we discover that they had a very distinctive view of their lives. They knew that what was happening was a tiny part of a massive picture. In fact, they knew that their lives only counted because of that much, much bigger picture. It was only as they discovered how small they were, they saw how big God really is. Our hope and prayer as we explore these studies together is that God would begin to awaken us to what he is doing and will do again. Maybe, just maybe, we might dare to see extraordinary things happen among us! I Believe in Miracles: When you hear stories of miracles, what kind of person are you? Do you get excited by it and instantly believe? Or, are you like most of us...a natural skeptic? In 1975, the band Hot Chocolate sang the famous lyrics “I believe in miracles, that’s what you are...’ (We all know the next lyric!! Ahem.) Of course, it’s a song about relationships and desire, but what if we all actually do believe in miracles? I mean, whether or not you’re a believer in God, where did everything come from? It either came from nothing or from some divine hand...either way its pretty miraculous! And what about in the day to day - are miracles possible today? What is clear is that in the book of Acts, dramatic things did happen causing a real stir. And, can those same things happen again today? Title: The World We All Want By: Tim Chilvers Bible Reading: Acts Chapter 4, verse 42-47 Recorded: Sunday 12/01/2020 at our Bournville gathering. Our hope and prayer as we explore these studies together is that God would begin to awaken us to what he is doing and will do again. Maybe, just maybe, we might dare to see extraordinary things happen among us! The World We All Want: Everywhere we look, people want to change the world. Title: I Can't Help It When we think of the word ‘Christian’, we tend to think of an established religion with churches, prayer and doing good things. But when we look back to the very first Christians, we get to see something much more raw and unstructured. The book of Acts is simply an account by eyewitnesses of the very first Christians. What becomes very clear, very quickly, is that something dramatic had happened…this wasn’t an attempt at establishing a religion, or starting an institution. They were simply a random group of people who’d seen something incredible. And they simply start changing the world as a result! They didn’t have to ‘work themselves up’ to be revolutionaries, they had simply seen something and heard something so breathtaking that had changed everything, for ever. And the question for us is - could this happen again? Wherever we find ourselves, whatever we find ourselves doing, we have the possibility of seeing the good news of Jesus at work. Recorded: Sunday 13/10/2019 at our Bournville gathering. Your World Matters: 'We live in a world in which we presume that changing the world is done on a grand scale. We praise celebrities and those who seem to have global impact. But, we don’t need to go looking for somewhere dramatic. We can see the value of everyday - maybe the world is changed one life at a time. Because we are part of God’s great story, we just need to see our everyday through new eyes. Maybe we are already right where we need to be, and simply play our part in the way God is changing our world. For outsiders, this gives a dignity and perspective on our everyday that begins to point them to a Father who sees them and calls them.' Wherever we find ourselves, whatever we find ourselves doing, we have the possibility of seeing the good news of Jesus at work. Recorded: Sunday 06/10/2019 at our Bournville gathering. You Can Make A Difference: 'We are part of a bigger story. Our work and daily lives may feel challenging or mundane, but we have a massive opportunity. We realise that we are part of God’s story, who has called us and wants to use us right where we are. For those who don't know Jesus, we can begin to discover a dignity and worth in our every day lives that begins to point to a bigger reality that maybe life isn't just about us, and that we are part of a big story.' Title: Your World Matters By: Tim Chilvers Bible Reading: Genesis, Chapter 28: Verses 10-22 (With a focus on verse 16) Description: Part of our teaching series called 'Everyday You' looking at the impact we can have in our everyday worlds. Wherever we find ourselves, whatever we find ourselves doing, we have the possibility of seeing the good news of Jesus at work. Recorded: Sunday 06/10/2019 at our Moseley gathering. For outsiders, this gives a dignity and perspective on our everyday that begins to point them to a Father who sees them and calls them.'
