You might have come across the term Open RAN if you have been following news around 5G. Open Radio Access Network, or Open RAN, is a key part of a mobile network system that uses cellular radio connections to link individual devices to other parts of a network. It comprises antennae, which transmits and receives signals to and from our smartphones or other compatible devices. The signal is then digitised in the RAN-base station and connected to the network. In the traditional set-up, Radio Access Network is provided as an integrated platform of both hardware and software. Therefore, it is difficult to mix vendors for the radio and baseband unit, and in most cases, they come from the same supplier. The idea of Open RAN is to change this, and enable operators to mix and match components. It goes a step further by opening the interfaces inside the base station. The Open RAN architecture allows for the separation - or disaggregation - between hardware and software with open interfaces. RAN has been based on proprietary technologies of original equipment makers such as Ericsson, Nokia, etc. With Open RAN, telecom players would have the flexibility to use in-house solutions or solutions from multiple vendors for RAN services. This would allow telecom operators to look beyond traditional vendors, thus creating opportunities for lesser-known vendors from abroad as well as from home to be part of the growing 5G ecosystem, based on their innovation competence. Network flexibility is another advantage of the Open RAN architecture. Being software-centric, it is scalable, agile and best of networks with improved network performance using artificial intelligence and machine learning. Last, but not the least, is cost. Open RAN would reduce a telecom operator's network deployment cost as it is interoperable with other networks such as 4G. Open RAN is a new architecture, and not something that has been extensively tested. Therefore, there are several challenges in the path to implement Open RAN such as latency issues, operations and maintenance. Since interoperability is at the core of Open RAN, the issue of latency might not show up in controlled environment testing but at a later stage when the architecture is pushed to its limits. Likewise, servicing and maintaining a multi-vendor architecture can also pose a big challenge for service providers.

Vodafone will become the first operator in Ireland to switch on an Open Radio Access Network (Open RAN) sites, in partnership with Parallel Wireless, a U.S. provider of Open RAN solutions. The innovative technology, which is being initially trialled in North Kildare and then rolled out across the North West region, will deliver new 4G service coverage to 30 locations in a faster and more cost-efficient way. In a traditional Radio Access Network, both the hardware and software elements are products from the same vendor and work closely in tandem with each other. However, the new Open RAN system allows telecommunications operators to deploy their own software on generic hardware in the Radio Access Network. This allows one supplier’s software to be integrated within another supplier’s radio and server hardware, which was not previously possible. As a result, alternative, smaller vendors can now increase the supply of radio network access equipment and software – making the market more competitive by avoiding vendor lock-in. In addition, Vodafone will also pioneer the use of system integrators to further improve product automation covering zero-touch provisioning, testing and operational process definition for Open RAN, and in doing so, further developing the ecosystem to include RAN automation vendors. This announcement follows a commitment from Vodafone Group to use emerging Open RAN technology for at least 2,600 sites in the UK. It is the largest confirmed promise made by a European carrier to embrace technology companies from outside the established supply chain. Vodafone Ireland Chief Technology Officer, Didier Clavero said: “Delivering Open RAN sites is a pivotal moment in the provision of mobile coverage to rural communities in Ireland, as this pioneering new approach reduces cost, increases flexibility and enables new suppliers to support the expansion of Vodafone’s mobile network in hard to reach areas. Focusing on the North West region, to begin with, we will continue to identify communities across Ireland where we can more economically introduce access to voice and high-speed data using the new technology.” Parallel Wireless’ Chief Operating Officer, Keith Johnson, said: “Through their ongoing innovation, Vodafone has gained a first-hand understanding of how Open and software-defined RAN can simplify deployments while reducing TCO. This has served as the foundation of our ongoing partnership and has allowed us to make great strides around the deployments of Open RAN globally. We are proud to support Vodafone Ireland as their strategic partner in helping them to reimagine wireless networks with Open RAN to be much lower cost ensuring access to connectivity across the region. As a leading innovator, Vodafone Ireland is setting the standard for providing better 4G experience for the consumers and businesses. By shifting networks to virtualized OpenRAN, quality coverage can be delivered to many new subscribers at a much lower cost with faster time-to-market.” Attilio Zani, TIP ́s Executive Director said “We are thrilled to move our focus to System Integration in OPEN RAN as new tools, processes are needed to capture the potential of the OPEN RAN Technology. It ́s also essential that we provide early operational feedback to the Radio Solutions that are still in the development stage” More about Irish Tech News and Business Showcase here. National Geographic Explorer and Photographer Ben Horton joins us on the podcast to talk about shooting everything from fashion, to commercial work, to sharks and his newest adventure of starting his own agency Access Network. Ben tells us stories of growing up in Bermuda with his brother and his artist parents and what would become the foundation of a very creative and DIY mindset. His father went from cartoonist to being one of the most respected sculptors in America showing Ben and his brother an ethos of what was possible if you put your mind to it, and what "making it" in the creative industry looks like. Ben's mother, the photographer of the family, gave him a camera at an early age. When his parents moved the family to Colorado and he began becoming attracted to the mountain lifestyle, the camera started becoming a frequently used tool. One summer Ben's parents decided they wanted the brothers to travel the world together in order to build a better bond and soon they were telling stories of adventures in New Zealand, Africa, and many other destinations. During that time Ben started to realize that he wanted to document some of the travesties happening to the planet and before long he was awarded the first ever National Geographic Young Explorers Grant. That would change his life forever and send him on many more adventures with one of the most iconic names you can put on your resume. Today we talk about what it looks like to be a National Geographic Photographer, how many times you have to raise the bar on the goals you set for your career, the ups and downs of the creative life, and looking towards the future of photography and business. Mission Statement The Patient Access Network (PAN) Foundation offers help and hope to people with chronic or life-threatening illnesses for whom cost limits access to breakthrough medical treatments. Vision Statement The PAN Foundation envisions a society in which every individual can access needed medical care, offering hope for a healthy tomorrow. About PAN It's a harsh reality. Healthcare is one of the top social and economic problems facing the United States today. The inability to pay for essential medical care isn't just a significant problem for the uninsured, but also for those with health insurance. Because of rising deductibles and co-pays, many insured patients with chronic diseases are struggling to pay for the care they need. Those who can't afford their treatments are often unable to continue compliance or end up refraining from seeking care all together; simply because they don't have available funds to cover the costs. Unfortunately, few options exist for financially-needy patients. Many are not only faced with rising premiums, deductibles, and co-pays, but also limits on coverage for various services, or services which are excluded—all which contribute to a dramatic increase in out-of-pocket expenses. The Patient Access Network (PAN) Foundation was founded in May 2004 as a solution to help the underinsured access the health care they so desperately need to continue living a relatively normal and productive lifestyle. Since then, PAN has provided more than 300,000 underinsured patients with over $700 million dollars in much needed financial assistance to cover out-of-pocket medical expenses. Many of these patients would have few alternatives without the help of PAN. That's why charitable donations from both the public and private sector are so crucial to continuing the financial assistance provided by the Foundation. The PAN Foundation is an independent, national 501 (c)(3) organization dedicated to providing underinsured patients with co-payment assistance through nearly 60 disease-specific programs that give them access to the treatments they need. We have an impressive administrative fee of only 5%. This means $0.95 of every dollar received will go directly towards helping our patients. For the last six years, less than one penny of each dollar contributed to PAN has been spent on fundraising. Please watch these videos and learn more about PAN and the work we do. Meet some of our Board members, staff, providers and patients and hear firsthand how exactly PAN is fulfilling its mission of providing help and hope.
