In this solo episode, Amy Wheeler explores the second yama, satyam (truthfulness), and its essential relationship to the first yama, ahiṃsā (non-harming). This conversation moves beyond simple definitions and into the lived complexity of speaking truth in real relationships, real bodies, and real moments.Drawing from personal reflection—including her own experience with illness and voice—Amy invites listeners into an honest inquiry:When do we speak too much, not enough, or avoid the truth altogether? In This EpisodeSatyam as Inner CoherenceSatyam is not simply “telling the truth.” It is the alignment between:PerceptionUnderstandingExpressionWhen these are out of sync, confusion and disconnection follow. When they align, communication becomes clear, steady, and trustworthy. Amy emphasizes that most misalignment comes from incomplete information (avidyā) and unexamined assumptions. As clarity improves, so does our ability to speak in a way that others can receive and trust.Ahiṃsā as the ContainerAhiṃsā is not just the absence of harm. It is the active cultivation of:SafetyCareStability in relationshipSatyam lives inside ahiṃsā. Truth must be expressed in a way that reduces harm and supports connection. This creates an ongoing inquiry:What am I saying that may cause harm? What am I avoiding that also creates harm?Avoidance and harshness are two sides of the same imbalance. The Role of RelationshipThe yamas are relational practices. They are not abstract ideals.Amy highlights that we refine truth through feedback:Honest, grounded relationships help us see clearlyMisaligned or dishonest environments distort our perceptionOver time, trustworthy relationships support the emergence of a deeper, more stable truth.Ṛtam: The Deeper TruthThe episode introduces ṛtam (cosmic order) as the underlying intelligence of reality.Ṛtam → what is (the larger truth)Satyam → how we align with and express that truthAmy describes this as learning to release control and personal agenda, allowing timing, context, and perspective to mature. Truth is not only about correctness—it is about alignment with something larger than the individual viewpoint. A Nervous System LensTruth is not just cognitive—it is physiological and relational. In sympathetic activation → truth can become sharp and reactiveIn withdrawal → truth can become suppressed or avoidedIn regulation → truth becomes attuned and constructiveInteroceptive awareness becomes a guide:Changes in breath, tension, or sensation signal misalignmentThe body often recognizes incoherence before the mind doesClinical and Practical ApplicationIn therapeutic settings, satyam is not blunt disclosure.Instead, it includes:Regulated presenceAttuned listeningReflective languageOften, simply reflecting a client's words allows truth to emerge without force. Truth becomes something discovered, not imposed.Key Reflection QuestionsAmy offers a simple but powerful framework:Is it true? (satyam)Is it kind? (ahiṃsā)Is it the right time, context, and relationship? (ṛtam)This triad supports more skillful communication and reduces unnecessary harm.Closing InsightTruthfulness is not a fixed achievement. It is a lifelong refinement. It asks for:Self-awarenessCourageRegulationWillingness to be wrongTrust in something larger than personal perspectiveAs Amy reminds us, this work unfolds over time, through relationships, and through the willingness to see ourselves clearly.Sanskrit Words of the EpisodeAhiṃsā – Non-harming; active care in relationshipSatyam – Truthfulness; inner and outer coherenceṚtam – Cosmic order; the deeper truth beyond personal perspectiveAvidyā – Misperception; incomplete or incorrect understandingSupport the PodcastJoin the Patreon communityExplore the Optimal State Mobile App (iPhone & Android)Pre-order Applications of Therapeutic Yoga in Integrative Health by Amy Wheeler & Marlisa Sullivanhttps://www.amazon.com/Applying-Therapeutic-Yoga-Integrative-Health/dp/1032888628/ref=sr_1_1?crid=1RFZ3L5MCCNPH&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.I7harQDOLulfRbd3dx2vVa5VUZa840PHcWB7dDiT3_bB2nravzO7_9Xs9shMhcy2Iwu0wtTA1PxeUG4TTugEQJuK_OEpvzQ-OyVvtsUkXsc.ViqLrL-EQPX7s09wZF6_2eCpLCimHa7Ohfbw-F7Yuk4&dib_tag=se&keywords=applications+in+therapeutic+yoga+wheeler&qid=1775224796&sprefix=applications+in+therapeutic+yoga+wheele%2Caps%2C153&sr=8-1

Moriah shares what happened the night she called off, the 95-page school board hearing where she represented herself, the charges that changed between letters, and the closing statement that's now rallying nurses everywhere: "I'd rather lose my job today than my license tomorrow." A must-listen conversation about scope of practice, license protection, school nurse staffing, and what it costs to stand up for what's right.Jump ahead:00:36 – Jana introduces the investigation and guest Moriah Benjamin, an LPN and former school nurse in Millville, Pennsylvania02:15 – How a local newspaper headline sparked a months-long investigation — and why the paper never got Moriah's side05:27 – Moriah walks through April 16th and 17th: the coverage gap, her repeated concerns, and the proper call-off09:05 – Jana reads the original news article and breaks down Pennsylvania's LPN supervision laws and PDE guidance for school nurses13:16 – The "backup" nurse in the neighboring district turns out to be another LPN14:29 – Life as a single mom on $28,000 a year with no benefits — and where her ten absences really came from18:41 – The 95-page school board hearing: Moriah represents herself after a $250 consult was all she could afford23:22 – Approved to work the summer program on April 20th — then served with charges on May 4th25:59 – Testimony changes three times on whether a CSN was ever made available30:58 – The safety math: one CSN, two LPNs, two districts, and up to 1,500 students per nurse38:09 – The charges that changed between May 4th and May 9th — and the objection that got shut down44:03 – "This was retaliatory": why Moriah believes the hearing was never about attendance50:25 – The closing statement: "I would rather lose my job today than my license tomorrow"52:57 – Life after termination, Studio 143 Designs, and the call for accountability in Millville and beyond59:06 – Moriah's message to nurses: stand firm, protect your license, protect your patientsThe investigation this analysis grew out ofSchool Nurse Fired After Refusing Assignment; Investigation Questions Staffing and Scope — Jana Price, Nurse on the RecordSchool Nurse Fired After Refusing Assignment: "I'd Rather Lose My Job Than My License"School Nurse RulesPart 1: School Nurses Must Refuse Unsafe Work. In this episode, Michael introduces Ruth Jacobs, a registered mental health nurse and founder of Certified Minds, to discuss where mental health efforts in industry have landed and how to create behavioral, cultural, and systems change that builds resilience.Ruth shares her background in CAMHS and eating disorder inpatient care, her experience managing during COVID lockdowns, and how gaps in pediatric mental health training led her to train UK medical teams, schools, and workplaces using simulations and practical skills. They focus on hospitality's risk factors—high emotional demands, unpredictability, staff shortages, long hours, poor sleep, and normalized frontline abuse—and discuss proactive leadership, psychological safety, and embedding resilience and check-ins into inductions.Ruth distinguishes everyday mental health issues from disorders, highlights early burnout signs, stresses the cost of inaction, recommends better listening and language for difficult conversations, and raises concerns about normalized cocaine use. We all experience stress. The real challenge isn't stress itself—it's whether we recover from it. Over time, chronic stress can quietly affect everything from inflammation and metabolism to sleep, digestion, and healthy aging. This week on The Dr. Hyman Show, I talk with nervous system educator and HRV expert Salim Najjar to explore what heart rate variability (HRV) can reveal about your body's ability to recover from stress and build resilience. Together, we unpack: • How to use HRV to better understand your body's response to stress • Why some stress makes you stronger while chronic stress wears you down • How to get more value from your wearable without obsessing over the numbers • Five daily habits that can help your nervous system recover and become more resilient • How your nervous system influences inflammation, healing, and healthy aging Our bodies are constantly responding to the demands we place on them every day. The good news is that resilience can be built, and the strategies in this conversation can help you recover from stress more effectively and support long-term health. To help you get started, Salim has created a free HRV guide that includes a personalized quiz and AI coach exclusively for listeners.View Show Notes From This Episode Sign up for Dr. Hyman's Brainshaping Academy to learn how to nourish the biological systems that support your mental, emotional, and cognitive health https://drhyman.com/products/brainshaping?utm_source=dr_hyman_show&utm_medium=newsletter&utm_campaign=may_27&utm_content=linkGet Free Weekly Health Tips from Dr. Hymanhttps://drhyman.com/pages/picks?utm_campaign=shownotes&utm_medium=banner&utm_source=podcastSign Up for Dr. Hyman's Weekly Longevity Journalhttps://drhyman.com/pages/longevity?utm_campaign=shownotes&utm_medium=banner&utm_source=podcastJoin the 10-Day Detox to Reset Your Healthhttps://drhyman.com/pages/10-day-detoxJoin the Hyman Hive for Expert Support and Real Resultshttps://drhyman.com/pages/hyman-hive This episode is brought to you by Perfect Amino, Cozy Earth, Timeline, Sunlighten, Made In, and Seatopia. In this episdode, Michael welcomes his longtime friend Yazz Abdulla, previously a guest during the pandemic to discuss food delivery and dark kitchens. They reflect on Copenhagen Street Food's grassroots style, then focus on founder-led hospitality businesses: founders often stay emotionally attached, operate like self-employed workers, lack systems (ops, HR, marketing, supply chain), misunderstand cashflow, and fail to plan an exit; Yazz advises emotional detachment, self-leadership, discipline, rituals, and valuing time and peace over status. They discuss the “lost art of hospitality,” arguing technology and transactional service have eroded human connection, while Gen Z is highly influential and brands like Blank Street succeed by designing for Gen Z.AI is seen as useful for optimization but unable to replace the human element. They compare struggling UK hospitality—blaming poor adaptation and leadership—against UAE hospitality, where conflict briefly crushed tourism but decisive government support enabled recovery.Lodgify is the headline sponsor for the Hospitality Mavericks Podcast Show.Lodgify is an all-in-one hosting platform built on one promise, minimum hassle, maximum independence. Michael interviews Stephen Logue, an economist and former FMCG marketer who became marketing director at Berni Inns, founded a research-led consultancy, and later owned restaurants.Logue explains how market research identified five consistent drivers of restaurant success—cleanliness, service, atmosphere, food quality, and value for money—and how redesigning and standardizing Berni Inns (including work with Conran) lifted sales and won a Catey. He argues hospitality underinvests in service, emphasizing “hire character, train skills,” building staff confidence and self-belief, and using tools like mystery visits and customer research. He shares “runners and riders” concept testing, a successful Greek concept at Meadowhall, lessons from Wetherspoon's standards and value focus, and the financial importance of repeat customers. Logue now supports independents via pro bono work and promotes simple cost control, menu margin analysis, and clear service promises.Connect with Stephen Logue:https://www.linkedin.com/in/stephen-logue-47227757/https://www.hospitalityblueprints.com/https://youtu.be/2_E_EBbdXpU?si=_0cECaQouijt_8LShttps://www.hospitalityblueprints.com/masterclass-videosBook:https://www.amazon.co.uk/Magic-Malls-Incredible-Customer-Service/dp/1910090638/ref=sr_1_3?crid=GEM2XLEJMP0P&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.lw06nq8ML3KTk_rhrQVeIK8X9HSz5KW3t9INoXg7iSTGjHj071QN20LucGBJIEps.bEQQL7nAGqgyohrPiRxbrwgf3N_jm-_O3tqE8QOnVBw&dib_tag=se&keywords=Stephen+Logue&qid=1780948637&sprefix=stephen+logue%2Caps%2C232&sr=8-3Connect with the podcastJoin the Hospitality Mavericks newsletterTune in via your favourite podcast platform - here More episodes for you to check out here A big thank you to our episode sponsor Monotree. They help hospitality operators strengthen operations and scale company culture by creating a "Branded Front Door" for your workforce.Head to their website to sign up.This podcast uses the following third-party services for analysis: Podcorn - https://podcorn.com/privacy

About a year and a half ago, she and her trainee partner accepted a flight to pick up a young man with possible hantavirus. The plan was solid. The weather looked manageable. This week on the podcast, we're diving into a concept you've probably seen everywhere lately: glimmers. Recently identified by trend forecasters as one of the defining wellbeing trends for 2026, glimmers - the opposite of triggers - are tiny moments that spark feelings of safety, joy, calm, or connection. At a time when wellness can often feel overwhelming, expensive, or performative, glimmers offer something beautifully simple: the ability to find nourishment in what's already around us. To explore this idea, we're joined by two women who have quite literally written the book on it — sisters Nadia Narain and Katia Narain Phillips, authors of Glimmers: Tiny Moments to Transform Your Life.Nadia and Katia have spent decades exploring healing, self-care, nervous system regulation, and emotional wellbeing.Together they are also the bestselling authors of Self-Care for the Real World and Rituals for Every Day.In this conversation, we discuss:What glimmers actually are and why they matterHow noticing small positive moments can support nervous system regulationThe science behind glimmers and brain rewiringWhy this practice resonates so deeply right nowThe connection between glimmers, trauma healing, and mental healthSimple ways to begin noticing glimmers in everyday lifePersonal glimmers Nadia and Katia have experienced recentlyAnd the self-care practices they turn to themselvesThis is a warm, grounding and hopeful conversation about finding beauty, safety and connection in the smallest moments and why those moments may be more powerful than we realise.Come see us hosting in the Menopause tent at the Everywoman Festival on June 13th https://www.everywomanfest.com/tickets-londonBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/self-care-club--6942824/support.Get in touch & come follow us on:Instagram Tiktok thttps://www.tiktok.com/@40ish.podcastJoin our private Facebook groupOrder our book hereBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/40ish-navigating-midlife-and-perimenopause--6942825/support?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=rssStudio production by @launchpodstudiosMusic by purpleplanet.
