This dish became a house favorite before it ever had a name. In this episode, I'm sharing the story behind it and why I'm finally writing it down after years of making it from memory. I talk about how the idea started with something Marty ate constantly during a summer in Israel and how he asked me to recreate it at home. From there, it blended with one specific version of pan con tomate that we fell in love with in Barcelona, and over time it evolved into something somewhere in between that I call Tomato Water Salad.   This is part of a bigger trend for me right now, paying attention to the things that I make without a written recipe and capturing them so other people can cook them too, especially my teenagers as they learn their way around the kitchen. Tomato Water Salad is simple, fresh, deeply tomato-forward, and still the best tomato dish I make to this day. No guest this week. Just me in my kitchen. My interview laptop is still broken, so instead of talking to someone else, I'm talking to you. In this episode, I share the meal I make all the time but have never written down. It's not on my sites. There's no official recipe. It's just something I do when I want a treat of a dinner and don't feel like overthinking it. It's a pan-fried chuck eye steak on a bed of garlicky salad, and the salad gets tossed with the steak juices right from the pan. That's basically the whole trick. It's simple, really good, and exactly the kind of thing I make for just me or for me and Marty. I also talk a bit about the random kitchen wisdom that sticks with you, like how my grandmother always kept canned milk around, what I realized about shelf-stable milk when I was living in Belgium, and why UHT or evaporated milk just works better for me right now. It's a very me-centered episode. A little rambling, a little practical, and all about making dinner in a way that fits real life. Links:This is not the exact salad I make, but it's sort of close. I actually put red wine vinegar and a bit of olive oil in a bowl, use a rasp (micro plane) to grate in a clove of garlic, whisk, add spring mix, toss, taste, add more vinegar or more oil or more spring mix, toss, add coarse kosher salt, toss, taste. This is how I cook chuck eye steaks, sort of. I don't put butter in the skillet. Instead, I put grapeseed oil on the steaks themselves. I also try to season the steaks with kosher salt and a good sprinkle of garlic powder at least an hour before cooking them. If it's less than an hour, I skip the garlic powder because it won't have time to hydrate and tends to burn. Michael welcomes Nicole back to discuss her new book, "Help Wanted," focused on finding “human magic” in hiring—going beyond technical skills and surface-level values fit to build teams and cultures that can withstand challenges. Nicole, a culture architect and founder of Banana Pepper HR, argues hospitality is at risk of becoming transactional and has an opportunity to re-center belonging and human connection. They critique standard, rushed recruitment as soulless and misaligned with brand promises, emphasizing “hospitality begins in-house” and that recruitment is a brand's first act of hospitality. Nicole highlights “super skills” often dismissed as soft skills—empathy, kindness, curiosity, creativity, vulnerability, resilience, and more—and explains how missing them can lead to poor service, brand damage, and commercial loss. Practical ideas include slowing down hiring, doing stronger reference checks (including peer references), interviewing for stories by creating psychological safety, and using a three-course interview framework (appetizer/entrée/dessert). Nicole shares why she chose 10 super skills, drawing inspiration from Danny Meyer's “HQ” and behavioral science (including Brené Brown). Episode #187 The FASD Brain and Connectivity with Dr. Raja MukherjeeWhat if many of the struggles we see in FASD are not about behavior at all but about how the brain sends and receives messages? In this episode of The FASD Success Show, Jeff Noble sits down with Dr. Raja Mukherjee, one of the world's leading experts in FASD psychiatry and brain development, to explore what brain connectivity really means for individuals living with FASD across the lifespan.Dr. Mukherjee explains how prenatal alcohol exposure affects the way different parts of the brain communicate with each other and why this can show up as inconsistency, fatigue, emotional overwhelm, and difficulty with daily life tasks even when someone appears capable on the surface.Together, Jeff and Dr. Mukherjee unpack why independence is often the wrong goal, how interdependence supports regulation and mental health, and what caregivers can do differently when they understand the brain through a connectivity lens.In This Episode You'll Hear• What brain connectivity is and why it matters more than IQ or motivation • How miscommunication between brain regions affects regulation, memory, and behavior • Why skills can look “there one day and gone the next” • How stress and overload disrupt already fragile brain networks • Why total independence is not a realistic or healthy end goal for many adults with FASD • How interdependence supports long term success and wellbeing • What caregivers and systems get wrong when they focus on compliance instead of connectionWhy This Episode MattersThis conversation helps caregivers, professionals, and individuals with FASD move away from blame and toward understanding. When you see challenges as connectivity issues rather than character flaws, everything changes including expectations, support strategies, and outcomes.Dr. Mukherjee brings decades of clinical experience and research insight to a topic that caregivers have been living for years. This episode offers clarity, validation, and a brain based framework you can actually use at home and in advocacy conversations.Listen and WatchListen on Apple Podcasts https://podcasts.apple.com/ca/podcast/the-fasd-success-show/id1492499195Listen on Spotify https://open.spotify.com/show/6ntB51glqYnRPmXCh6lOGqWatch on YouTube https://www.youtube.com/@FASDSuccessResources and LinksLearn more about The FASD Success Show https://www.fasdsuccess.com/podcastJoin our free parent and caregiver community https://www.facebook.com/groups/FASDFOREVERFollow Jeff Noble Instagram https://www.instagram.com/FASDSuccess Facebook https://www.facebook.com/FASDSuccessSubscribe to the YouTube Channel https://www.youtube.com/@FASDSuccessYou are not failing. I thought I knew what freezer meals were, but it turns out I really did not. There's a good chance you'll be surprised too. We talk about what freezer meals actually are, why they're different from leftovers, and how this way of cooking can save time without sacrificing flavor. She also walks us through one of her favorite recipes, a Mediterranean chicken sheet pan freezer meal that is incredibly easy and packed with flavor. And be sure to come see me and Marty live on YouTube at 2:00pm EST today, Saturday, January 31st.
