Tamara started a podcast in 2022 called “The Recovering Liberal” as a personal exercise in speaking her mind openly, no matter how unpopular or controversial. When most people hear the word “RECOVERING” from something, they assume that it automatically means that the person has departed from that way of thinking and is opposed to it. In Tamara's case, that would be further from the truth of who she has emerged to become and truly is! She remains very progressive in her thinking but has found a specific “balanced” that has allowed her to thrive in a marriage to a spouse who voted for “The Clown.” This monumental episode is a MUST listen for all and stands as a barometer to our series on “RECONCILIATION”… https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC70rQqZmIiripKQSrUoFxoQ
Life is a Ride---Overcoming Huge Challenges in Unconventional Ways
Teona Ducre has to be one of the most inspirational humans I've ever spoken with. I hope you listen to this conversation about her cancer journey, and how she is helping others deal with this disease. She's a hero---cancer didn't steal her joy! About Teona: Teona Ducre is a six year pancreatic cancer survivor from Atlanta, GA. She is a single mother of two adult children, Grant (22) and Sydney (19) and works for Pinnacle Health of Atlanta as a Physician Recruiter. Teona was diagnosed at the age of 41 on April 1, 2016 (yes, April Fool's Day!) Her battle with pancreatic cancer included 6 months of very aggressive chemotherapy that successfully shrunk the tumor and made her eligible for surgery in November of 2016.The day before Thanksgiving 2016, Teona was released to go home and celebrate the holiday with her family and friends. She then underwent another 5 months of chemotherapy until she was officially declared in remission. Teona's motto throughout her cancer journey was “Cancer Can't Steal My Joy.” Soon after getting diagnosed, Teona began volunteering with various organizations including Purple Pansies and the Pancreatic Cancer Network (PanCAN) to advocate for all those impacted by this devastating disease. Her volunteer work includes being a guest speaker at the Purple Pansies annual Gala and fundraiser, as well as being an Honorary Board Member of Purple Pansies. She has served as board member and executive director of Destroy Pancreatic Cancer Foundation of Atlanta. She has served in various roles with the Atlanta PanCAN affiliate, including participating in the planning of Purple Stride Atlanta, traveling to Washington DC on multiple occasions for National Advocacy Day on Capitol Hill and serving as the Affiliate Chair, Affiliate Co-Chair and a 3 year member of the PanCAN Survivor Council. She also is the author of HealthFULLLife blog and uses social media to spread awareness about her battle with pancreatic cancer. In addition, Teona shares her story through attending speaking engagements and interviews for both print and broadcast media. She has been a guest on several Atlanta radio shows and on Atlanta Unplugged with WNBA player Tamara Young, whose father died of pancreatic cancer. Teona also appeared in a national interview on CBS with PanCAN CEO and President, Julie Fleishman. Teona celebrated a milestone 6 years in remission in 2022 and continues her volunteerism. As a woman of color, Teona is dedicated to educating Black and Brown communities about the disease and spreading awareness with the goal of bettering outcomes for the BIPOC community diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer. Through her involvement with Purple Pansies and other advocacy and health education roles, Teona was inspired to pursue a career as a physician recruiter. She hopes to eventually complete her MPH degree to work more closely with nonprofit organizations and globally to improve health outcomes for People of Color.
When Tamara and I first connected and I heard about her podcast "The Recovering Liberal", I thought this should make for a juicy conversation. There is a part of me that loves talking to people with really strong views, to see if we can find some common ground even though we see the world so differently. I also enjoy the "intellectual sparring" part of it, that usually comes with those types of emotionally charged conversations. What I got in this discussion with Tamara was so much better than that though. Rather than an irrational, extremist who thought their view of the world was exactly right, I found myself talking to one of the more rational, humble, and open minded people I've had the pleasure of speaking with on this journey. I know that doesn't always make for all the exciting sound bites and social media buzz, but it does make for a much deeper, more insightful, learning experience. Even more so because Tamara has such a self awareness about her own personal journey, which included struggles with addiction, shifting away from an extreme liberal view point, and ultimately identifying the pursuit of truth as her most important value. The words she uses are " the perspective I bring is quite simply how an ordinary person begins to explore beyond headlines and really understand the heart of these issues, so that they can make more informed decisions for their own lives and choices." I would argue there is actually something quite extraordinary about that approach to life. We covered a lot of ground in this discussion and explored what pursuing the truth looks like for Tamara. We talked about the subjective nature of truth, how having a moral high ground can be dangerous, the difference between liberals and conservatives, and explored some recent political stories (e.g., attack of Nancy Pelosi's husband, January 6th, Tulsi Gabbard etc.). The thing that was consistent throughout the discussion (despite my probing and pressing) was Tamara's consistent approach to be as objective and humble as she could be. Although it wasn't the conversation I expected, I thoroughly enjoyed it and learned a lot.
An abusive childhood drove her away from her right-wing, Christian upbringing. As an adult, she repressed her feelings by diving into left-wing politics and alcoholism. Triggered by the election of Donald Trump, a panic attack and night of heavy drinking sent her on a downward spiral. Tamara Young, host of the Recovering Liberal podcast, shares her story about starting a family in the midst of a world-wide pandemic which caused her to question the narrative after having an adverse reaction to the "jab". Being told that her motherly concerns come second to the advice of experts forced a new desire to uncover the truth behind a nefarious political movement. She now attests a spiritual revival which is changing her ideologies once again. The Invictus Mind Podcast can be found on Stitcher, Spotify, Apple, Castbox, and Anchor.
