In this episode, I sit down with Breda and Guy Kellner of Paris Ceramics to talk about their extraordinary work with natural and reclaimed stone. I've long admired how they honor the history and geology of each material, transforming salvaged slabs into flooring, fireplaces, and surfaces that feel both timeless and deeply alive. We talk about what it means to live with materials that change and age, why patina is worth celebrating, and how true craftsmanship connects us to the past while shaping spaces for the future. This is a conversation about beauty, imperfection, and choosing to design with time—not trends. Want to finally define your style? Grab your free worksheet and uncover your personal aesthetic!

In this week's show Lian is joined by Paula Robinson. As an intuitive interior designer, Paula understands the profound effect that the spaces where we live and work have on our health, happiness and success in life. Often called the ‘space whisperer', she helps people to create living and working environments that transform their lives on all levels. Paula has been an interiors columnist for The Sunday Times, the Sunday Telegraph and Move Or Improve? magazine, and is the author of "The Healing Home & Garden: Reimagining Spaces for Optimal Wellbeing" and "The Room Planner: Over 100 Practical Plans For Your Home". Paula is happiest in nature - especially by the sea - and loves designing outdoor spaces. She is passionate about the environment, sustainable design, re-purposing furniture and objects, and supporting craftspeople over mass-producers. In this episode, Lian and Paula explore how our homes shape our bodies, minds, and mythic lives… the primal ways space soothes or unsettles us, and the quiet work of making a dwelling that heals. Together, they trace the path from head to heart, from trend to truth, and from copybook rules to the felt sense of sanctuary. Together, they journey through refuge and prospect, the simple power of moving a chair, and why bedrooms and workspaces ask for special care. Paula shares how intuitive design emerges, how objects carry the craft and energy of their makers, and how plants, animals, light, and air restore a room's vitality. At the centre of this conversation is a gentle invitation… listen to what your home is already telling you, let your instincts set the first mark, then let practicality refine it. Beauty follows when a space begins to mirror the soul that lives there. We'd love to know what YOU think about this week's show. Let's carry on the conversation… please leave a comment wherever you are listening or in any of our other spaces to engage. What you'll learn from this episode: Start with feeling, then refine with form: notice how each room lands in your body, create refuge and prospect by seeing both door and view, then let measurements and plans serve what already feels right. Small changes shift everything: rearrange to interrupt stale traffic patterns, personalise even temporary spaces, and enliven rooms with plants, natural light, fresh air, mirrors, and the quiet presence of animals. Design as living story: choose objects that speak to you, honour their makers and materials, and when a house feels unsettled, consider energetic space clearing so the home and its history can move with you rather than against you. In this episode, I talk with Natalie Papier about her new book, “Start With the Art”. Natalie explains why the art you choose—whether it's from a flea market, your kids, or a gallery—can and should be the starting point for designing a room. We discuss how art can shape color palettes, patterns, and materials, and why it tells the real story of a home. Natalie also shares examples from her own spaces, offers advice on experimenting with paint and scale, and emphasizes the importance of adding humor (think a six-foot fiberglass ostrich) and personality to your interiors. In past episodes of Do You Really Know, we've talked about a number of Scandinavian lifestyle trends, like death cleaning and hygge for example. Both of those are inspired by similar sentiments; to do with feeling good in surroundings that aren't overflowing with useless items. And yet, in recent months, we've been hearing more and more about a home decor trend that's the complete opposite. Maximalism is making a comeback! The signs have been there at furniture shows, such as the 2022 Milan Furniture Fair where Dimore Studio displayed a maximalist interior that got a lot of attention. Of course, influencers have been sharing pictures and videos of their interiors on social media too. Where does this desire for maximalism come from? How can I bring maximalism into my home then? In under 3 minutes, we answer your questions! To listen to the latest episodes, click here: What is the best way to soothe a crying baby? What is the Suez Canal? Looking back, my kitchen has gone through many lives. It started with painted cabinets and bamboo floors on a tight budget, then evolved through a moody green phase during COVID before finally landing on a navy-and-white look inspired by the sea. Along the way, we tiled to the ceiling, swapped in a gorgeous Bertazzoni stove, shiplapped the ceiling, and added furniture pieces to make it feel warm and lived-in rather than purely functional. Each change taught me something about color, materials, and the value of taking time to figure out what really works. With my renovation journey behind me, I sit down with Barbara Ballinger and Margaret Crane, authors of Kitchen Conversations, to talk about what really goes into creating a kitchen that works for you. We cover the basics like layout, storage, and lighting, and why planning for how you actually use the space matters more than following trends. Barbara and Margaret share practical tips on where to save, when to splurge, and how to avoid common renovation mistakes. We also discuss making design choices that last, adding personality to your kitchen, and how to approach the entire process without rushing it. Want to finally define your style? This week, I'm answering a listener question from Meg about how to balance style with function, especially when it comes to storage. She wants a home that looks good but also works for real life. I walk through different strategies depending on where you are in the process: whether you're starting from scratch, filling in gaps, or trying to upgrade over time. I also share my thoughts on when it makes sense to go with something quick and affordable like IKEA, and when to hold out for something more lasting. We discuss using placeholders, being honest about your priorities (speed, price, or quality—you can only choose two), and how to avoid clutter by utilizing storage solutions that also add character. I show a few examples from my own home, including how I use vintage crates, tins, and even sugar bowls to keep things both tidy and personal. This is the last episode of the season. We'll be back on August 18th. Also, early bird pricing for the retreat ends August 1st, so if you're thinking about joining me this fall, now's the time. All the details can be found here. In this episode of the Contractor Growth Network podcast, Logan Shinholser sits down with Peter Rainey, co-founder and managing partner of Ranney Blair Weidman, to unpack their unique and refined pre-construction process. Peter walks through how his team shifted from traditional estimates and disjointed design experiences to a highly structured, 100-page client journey that establishes trust, transparency, and efficiency. By controlling the design narrative, focusing on true client advocacy, and emphasizing clear expectations, Ranney Blair Weidman now delivers high-end remodels with alignment and clarity from start to finish. Key Takeaways: The Shift from Outsourced Design to Full Ownership Early in their journey, Peter's team relied on external designers, often leading to miscommunication, delays, and poor client outcomes. The transition to a fully integrated design-build approach allowed them to control timelines, eliminate misalignment, and focus on client experience. Start the Sales Process in the Living Room, Not the Kitchen Instead of jumping straight into measurements, Peter initiates consultations in the living room to foster creativity and uncover the client's real problems. This sets the tone for trust, collaboration, and bigger-picture thinking beyond surface-level design requests. The Power of the Project Summary Letter After the in-home consultation, Peter presents a formal, typed letter on letterhead recapping client frustrations and goals. This old-school touch confirms the client feels heard, sets expectations, and serves as the north star for all design decisions moving forward. 100-Page Process Document Builds Trust Through Transparency At the showroom, clients are walked through a highly visual and interactive document showing past projects, pricing structure, punchlists, and processes. This immersive experience shifts the conversation from price anxiety to partnership and problem-solving. Design to Solve, Not to Budget Ranney Blair Weidman focuses first on solving problems through creative design, not fitting within arbitrary budgets. Pricing is presented by area with modular options, giving clients control over scope while preserving the integrity of the design. Memorable Quotes: “We're not designing to a budget. We're designing to solve your problem.” “If they don't want to follow our approach, we are not the right fit for them.” “Quit trying to save the client money. That's not our job. Our job is to present options.” Actionable Advice: Control the Narrative Avoid being just another bidder. Guide clients through a structured process that builds trust and reinforces your authority as the expert. Start with a Conversation, Not a Tape Measure Begin in a neutral space like the living room to hear their story before inspecting the space. This approach unlocks deeper insights and establishes rapport early. Document What You Hear Use a project summary letter to confirm and reflect back what clients said during your visit. This builds confidence and becomes the foundation of your design strategy. Provide Options, Not Ultimatums Break pricing into modular packages or room-by-room breakdowns. Allow clients to see the value and make decisions collaboratively without feeling boxed in.
In this episode, I welcome back designer Jewel Marlowe, whose work is bold, layered, and always intentional. She shares examples from her own evolving home and current client projects, all while staying rooted in meaning and play. If you're drawn to the idea of decorating over time with confidence and creativity, this one's for you. Want to finally define your style? This week, I'm joined by Professor Annetta Grant, whose research examines why so many of us feel uneasy in our own homes — even after we've renovated them. We dive into her concept of dysplacement (yes, spelled with a “y”), and how the rise of HGTV, social media, and resale-minded design has shifted the home from a space of personal expression to a performance of market standards.Annetta and I talk about why we second-guess our own style, the emotional pressure to “get it right,” and how even dipping our toes into “bold” choices can feel risky. If you've ever wondered why your beautifully updated space still doesn't feel quite like you, this conversation will give you language — and permission — to rethink everything. In this episode, I sit down with interior designer Jade Joyner, co-founder of the firm Metal + Petal, to talk about how she approaches design with intention, balance, and a strong point of view. Jade is the opposite of a formulaic designer—she's not interested in trends, matching sets, or playing it safe. Instead, she leans into mixing materials, layering stories, and building spaces that reflect the people who live in them.We go deep into two of her residential projects, walking through how she makes decisions around shape, material, and layout—and how she balances aesthetics with real-life function (like designing for a family with five kids). We also get into what she calls "connective tissue"—the subtle moves that make rooms flow together without feeling matchy or over-designed.This conversation is a behind-the-scenes look at the kind of thought, care, and creative problem-solving that goes into designing spaces that feel both grounded and alive. If you've ever wondered how to pull off a mix—or how to avoid the dreaded “blanket look”—Jade has some smart, candid advice you won't want to miss. Want to finally define your style? Williams of St. Louis Closet Company to reveal why closets, yes, closets, are one of the most underestimated elements in all of residential design. Jennifer breaks down the functional and emotional impact of a well-designed closet, how it can save time, reduce stress, and even increase a home's market value. In this episode, I talk with Whitney English—author, designer, and (as I like to call her) my organizational better half. Her new book, Organize First, Decorate Second, isn't your typical organizing manual. It's thoughtful, deeply personal, and grounded in real life—something I immediately connected with.We explore the idea that our homes are not just reflections of who we are, but tools that help shape us. Whitney shares why she prefers the word edit over declutter, how tension (not balance) is her guiding principle, and why you should think twice before buying drawer dividers. We also get into how new urbanism and walkable cities inspired her approach to home design, why she gave up on making her bed, and how organization can actually free up space for beauty and joy—not get in the way of it.If you've ever struggled with keeping things tidy, if you love your stuff but want it to serve you better, or if you just want permission to let go of what's not working, this conversation will feel like a deep breath.
